Ruby's Surgery

Josh's heart broke as Ruby began crying after they inserted her little IV. Tyler was holding her as they put it in, crying himself as he gently bounced her in his arms.

"It's okay," he said softly, running his hand over her little head. "It's okay, Ruby."

Josh kissed Tyler's cheek, wrapping an arm around him as he used the other to help hold Ruby. "She's gonna be okay, honey. I-I promise."

The boys had a few more minutes with Ruby before the nurses came back in and told them it was time for her operation. Tyler held her to his chest, kissing her forehead before giving her to Josh.

Josh held her, bouncing her gently for a moment before kissing her head and lying her down in her little tiny hospital bed.

He wrapped his arms around Tyler, who was crying.

Ruby began to cry, too. Even though she was only a year old, she knew when she was about to be away from her daddies.

They said they loved her then went to the waiting room.

They sat next to each other in chairs, holding hands tightly. Tyler was shivering. Josh got a blanket from a very kind lady at the front desk and gave it to him. Ty couldn't stop crying.

He knew Tyler needed to sit in his lap, but he couldn't. He instead did what he could to distract him.

But nothing worked.

Four hours later, one of the nurses called.

"Josh and Tyler Dun?"

They quickly stood up, Tyler racing to her.

"I-is she okay??" He asked frantically. "I-is Ruby o-okay??"

"She's doing great," she smiled softly, gently putting a hand on his shoulder so he would calm down. "She's doing wonderfully. But the doctor did find a few cysts over her heart, so it's gonna be another few hours."

Tyler nodded, Josh's arm around him from behind so he felt safe.

The boys talked to the nurse for a few more minutes before going back to the waiting room.

Josh had Tyler put in headphones and he played some meditation audio, which made Tyler fall asleep.

Which was a very good thing. Tyler hadn't slept in three days because he had been so worried about Ruby's surgery.

Six hours later, the boys were called back.

"Ruby..." Tyler said softly as he entered the hospital room to see his baby girl still asleep from the anesthesia.

"I told you she'd be okay, baby," Josh said.

Three days later, Ruby was awake.

"Hi, sweet girl," Tyler said with a soft smile, gently caressing her tiny cheek.

Ruby started crying, but that was a good sign. They knew she had no nerve loss of anything because she knew she didn't feel right.

***

It was a long recovery, but Ruby made it.

Two weeks after the operation, she even got to go home.

Many people visited Ruby, bringing her get well gifts and lots of hugs and kisses.

Aunt Maddy, Uncle Zacky, Grandma Kelly, Aunt Ashley, Aunt Abigail, Grandma Laura, Uncle Jordan, Jenna, lots of people.

Ruby was happy and healthy soon enough, and the boys couldn't be more thankful.
