Moving On

"I know that sigh," Josh said, reaching over and intertwining his fingers with his boyfriend's. "What's wrong?"

"I-I just... I wish we were up there," Tyler said. "Just you and me. Nobody else in the whole entire universe. Nobody could see us or judge us or stare at us. We could just be in love with each other."

Josh sighed as he looked up at the stars with Tyler, squeezing his hand. "I know it's hard, baby. But people will come around. One day the stares will stop and we won't have people coming up to us saying we can't be a couple."

Tyler just looked up at the stars, imagining what life would be like all the way up there, alone with the love of his life.

"But nothing's ever gonna break us apart," Josh said. "And that's a fact. It'll always be you and me. Josh and Tyler, for better or for worse."

Tyler used the hand that wasn't holding Josh's to run his fingers through his fluffy brown hair.

"I promise, baby. Things are gonna get better," Josh said, kissing his cheek.

Tyler sniffled and nodded, wiping the tears from his cheeks.

"Don't cry, Ty," Josh said, holding his boyfriend closely. "Please don't cry. I'm doing everything I can to make this seem like as normal of a relationship as possible. I promise."

"I-it's not you, Joshie," Tyler sniffled. "You're the most perfect, a-amazing, incredible boyfriend out there. I-it's just the problem p-people have with me being a-a boy w-with a boyfriend."

Josh sighed and nodded. "One day, things are gonna be better, Ty. They're gonna be so much better. We'll be able to kiss and hold hands in public, I can snuggle you at the movie theatres, we'll be able to do so many fun things. Just you wait. It'll be so amazing."

"I love you, Joshua," Tyler sniffled.

"I love you more, baby," Josh said. "Just... just try to think about the positives. We're gonna get married someday. Isn't that exciting? And I'll take you on a big romantic honeymoon."

Tyler sighed and nodded.

Honestly, it was hard for Josh to maintain a positive attitude. Tyler just never seemed happy with him, and even though Tyler had never been happier and was just sad about peoples' thoughts about gay people, he always thought Ty was just not happy with him.

"I-I'm gonna go home. Night," Josh said, crawling back through the window from Tyler's roof into his room then going downstairs to his car.

This time, he decided to not be the one to text first. He wanted to see if Tyler would ever be the one to ask him how he was or if he wanted to go out on a date.

But Tyler never texted.

A month later, Josh called him. "S-so a-are we just like... o-over now?"

"What? Y-you just never texted or called."

"I always texted and called. I just wanted to see if you ever cared enough to do the same," Josh said, sounding hurt. "B-but You didn't. S-so I guess that means w-we aren't dating anymore."

"J-Joshie, I-I love you. W-we aren't not dating anymore," Tyler said.

"That's the thing though, Tyler," Josh sniffled. "I-I don't feel like you really, actually love me."

"W-what? Joshua, I-I love you more than anything."

"Then why don't you ever smile when you're with me? O-or act excited when I talk about doing special things with you? O-or even hold my hand in public?"

"I-I..."

"Exactly, Tyler. I-I Put Everything I have into this relationship to make you comfortable a-and happy, b-but you aren't. You deserve to be comfortable and happy, but I can't do that for you, apparently. Just be with someone else."

"I-I only want to be with you, though, Joshie," Tyler said.

"But you don't love me. A-and I want to be with someone who cares about me just as much as I care about them."

"I-I do care about you! I-I promise! I-I promise I'll be a better boyfriend. A-and everything you do for me m-means the world to me! I-it's just... i-it's hard when people don't approve..."

"But if you actually loved me, y-you could push that aside a-and be with me happily. B-but you're too concerned about what other people think t-to care about my feelings while all I do is focus on yours. I-it hurts, Tyler. A-and I can't take that pain anymore."

"Joshie, I-I don't mean to hurt you. Y-you're m-my Everything. I-it's just h-hard..."

"And it's hard when the person who you put your everything into doesn't even act happy when you're around," Josh said, tears streaming down his cheeks. "I-it was fun while it lasted. F-for me, at least. Goodbye, Tyler."

Three days later, there was a knock on Josh's door.

He wiped his tears and answered it. He hadn't stopped crying since the breakup.

He opened it to find Tyler holding a big bouquet of red roses. "T-the lady at t-the store asked who the flowers were for. I-I said they were for a boy I love very much."

"Why are you here, Tyler?" Josh asked quietly with a sniffled, his arms crossed over his belly like he was insecure.

"T-to Tell you t-that I love you," Tyler answered. "A-and that I'm sorry."

Josh shrugged and sniffled, closing the door and locking it before going back to his room to continue crying.

Tyler called him thirty times, eventually going home to begin crying as well. He really had messed up making Josh believe he was ashamed of him.

Three months later, Josh was at Target buying groceries at the same time Tyler was.

Tyler saw him from the other end of the aisle and smiled. This was going to be the moment he had dreamt of. He would run up and surprise Josh with a big kiss on the lips, they would fall in love again and everything would be amazing.

But once he got up close to Josh, another boy pulled him into his arms with a wide smile and kissed his lips deeply.

Tyler's heart sunk.

Josh smiled in the kiss, putting his basket down and getting on his toes so he could deepen the kiss with the taller boy with brown hair.

Tyler started backtracking, but then he stopped himself. He walked back up to Josh and spoke up after he was done kissing the boy. "H-hi."

Josh turned around, taken aback when he saw it was Tyler. "H-hi," he said quietly.

"H-how are you?"

"I-I need t-to go," Josh said. There were tears in his eyes.

"P-please dont cry," Tyler said. "I-I didn't mean to make you sad."

Josh sniffled and shook his head, finding the tall brown-headed boy and holding his hand tightly. His boyfriend, Dallon, made him feel safe.

Tyler just stood there and watched for a second.

Quite quickly, Josh's boyfriend was making him smile. He was rubbing his nose against Josh's, whispering things into his ear, kissing him.

All the things Tyler should have been doing.

"W-well," He said to himself. "I-I guess if Josh has moved on, it's time I do too."
