Missed Anniversary

Josh sighed as he walked into the bathroom to see his husband asleep in the bathtub.

He kneeled down beside him and gently took his hand in his own.

Tyler woke up at the contact. "Joshie?" He asked sleepily.

"Hey, baby," Josh whispered back softly. "Sorry I'm late. We can still do something if you'd like."

Tyler was so exhausted. He stayed up till 2 in the morning waiting for Josh to get home from work so they could celebrate their anniversary together.

"I'm just gonna go to bed," Tyler replied.

"Okay," Josh nodded, helping Tyler get up.

He got him some clean clothes, dressing him in them as Tyler was half-awake half-asleep sitting on the bathroom counter.

He kissed Tyler's forehead. "Maybe we can do something this weekend, baby," he suggested, softly running his fingers through his husband's hair.

Tyler shrugged. "I-I kind of wanted to do it today, Joshie," he said quietly.

"I know, baby," Josh replied. "I know. And I'm so sorry. I know you've always wanted a really special first anniversary."

Tyler shrugged again, playing with his own fingers.

Josh held his hands out, Tyler waiting a minute before taking them.

"You still love me, right?" Josh asked.

"Of course I love you, Joshua," Tyler said, reaching up and hugging Josh's neck. "I couldn't ever stop loving you."

Josh hugged him back. He felt really bad for being late home for their anniversary celebration. Tyler had been talking about it for weeks now.

"Let's get you to bed, then," he said, walking with Tyler to their room and crawling into bed with him after changing out of his work clothes.

Tyler didn't immediately snuggle up next to him. That was the first time ever.

It was also how Josh knew he had hurt his husband.

"Is there anything I can do?" He asked.

Tyler shook his head. "N-no. It's okay. Goodnight."

"G'night, baby," Josh sighed, kissing Tyler's forehead and falling asleep as well.

The next morning he woke up to find Tyler wasn't beside him, which was incredibly unusual.

He got up and went to the kitchen, seeing Tyler eating waffles but the maker wasn't out and there were no bowls dirtied from the batter.

"Did you make waffles this morning?" Josh asked.

"I made them last night. I-I made breakfast for dinner b-but you didn't show. I-I was gonna bring it to you in bed last night t-too with a big bouquet of roses a-and stuff b-but you didn't come so I-I just put it in the fridge."

"Baby..." Josh sighed.

"Y-your plate is still in there," Tyler said quietly, referring to the refrigerator. He still hadn't looked at Josh.

"How about I take the day off work today?" Josh asked. "And we can spend the whole day together."

"I-I have my appointment today," Tyler replied softly.

"Oh, yeah," Josh said. He forgot about that. "Maybe we can meet up for lunch."

"Maybe," Tyler said.

Josh got dressed for work, coming out in his suit and pulling Tyler in for a deep kiss. It made Tyler uncomfortable, he could tell.

He pulled back once he noticed, knowing Tyler got overwhelmed easily and it would make him anxious.

"Where do you wanna meet for lunch?" Josh asked.

Tyler shrugged.

"How about Panera?"

Tyler nodded.

Josh nodded. "I better head out. I love you."

"I-I Love you too."

Josh's lunch was at 12:30, and Tyler's appointment was at 11:30. However, knowing doctors always ran behind, he just called and canceled the appointment. Lunch with Josh was more important to him, even though he'd been waiting months for this appointment.

Tyler was sitting at Panera at 12:15.

It was 12:30 soon enough.

Then 12:40.

Then 12:55.

Tyler's phone started vibrating.

"Hey, baby?" Josh asked.

"H-hi."

"I um... I can't make it to lunch, baby. I-I'm so sorry."

"Josh..." Tyler said softly.

Josh always knew Tyler was upset when he only called him 'Josh.'

"I-I'm sorry, baby. Just there's this meeting I forgot about and it's really important and-"

"I-it's fine," Tyler said. "I-I'll see you at home tonight."

"Ty-"

Tyler hung up.

Josh got home around 10:00 that night.

Tyler had been sitting on the couch waiting for him since 5:30, when he normally got home.

"Ty?" Josh asked as he head sniffling. "Tyler..."

"A-are you cheating on me?" Tyler hiccuped from crying so much.

"W-what? Tyler... I-I could never," Josh said, reaching out and caressing Tyler's arm.

"J-just tell me if you are," Tyler sniffled. "J-just tell me so I can quit stopping my life and waiting to see you."

"Tyler," Josh said sadly. "I'm not cheating."

He was telling the truth. He wasn't cheating. He could never cheat on Tyler.

But it hurt him more than anything that Tyler thought he could be cheating on him.

Tyler just buried his face in his knees that were pulled up to his chest as he continued to cry.

Josh got on the couch and wrapped his arms around Tyler in a big bear hug. "I-I'm not cheating, but I am being a bad husband. A-and I know it, Tyler. I-I know it. But there's no way on earth I could ever be with anyone who isn't you."

Tyler sniffled as he turned around so he was straddling Josh, hugging him tightly as he cried into his shoulder.

"I-I'm so sorry I'm hurting you, baby," Josh said softly as he rubbed Tyler's back. "I-I'm so, so sorry."

The next few weeks after that were hard for both boys. Josh kept being late home and Tyler was continuing to be hurt by it.

One day, though, Josh came home from work on time.

"Hi," he said as he got home.

"H-hi," Tyler replied quietly. "Y-you're home early."

"I-I uh... yeah. I thought maybe I could take you out on a date tonight."

"M-me?" Tyler asked.

Josh nodded.

"W-why?"

"Because I love you."

"O-oh," Tyler said quietly. "O-ok."

"Ok," Josh answered. "Where do you wanna go?"

"Y-you don't have it planned?"

"No..."

"O-oh. Um... i-i don't, i-it doesn't matter to me."

"Do you wanna go get dessert for dinner somewhere?" Josh suggested.

"Ok."

So the boys went to Josh's car and headed to their favorite dessert place.

Tyler stayed an awkward distance away from Josh as they walked. Eventually, though, Josh went over to him and held his hand.

They entered the dessert place, Tyler getting in one side of the booth and Josh getting in the same side.

"W-what're you doing?" Tyler asked.

"Sitting by you," Josh replied. "Is that okay?"

"Y-yeah."

Tyler was quiet the rest of the night.

They came back home, walking inside together.

"Thank you for the date," Tyler said quietly before going to his room.

"Wanna do something else?" Josh asked. "Maybe we could watch a movie or something."

Tyler nodded, returning to the kitchen. He and Josh went to the couch and sat down, watching some random movie neither of them really cared about.

Tyler reached over and took Josh's hand, playing with his fingers. "I'm sorry I thought you were cheating."

"Don't be sorry for that, Ty," Josh sighed. "The way I was acting implied it. I was just caught up in work and was putting it in front of you and forgot our anniversary. I'm sorry, baby. I really am."

"It's ok," Tyler answered. "I-I still love you."

Josh smiled softly. "I love you too."

Tyler then intertwined their fingers and moved closer to Josh, resting his head on his shoulder. "This movie isn't very good."

"Yeah, it sucks," Josh laughed. "Wanna go cuddle in bed?"

Tyler smiled and nodded, and they were off to snuggle.

"What do you wanna do for our makeup anniversary?" Josh asked.

"I dunno," Tyler replied. "Something romantic."

"We could do a romantic bath right now," Josh said. "And maybe go on the trip in the mountains in a romantic cabin that I booked tomorrow."

"Joshua..." Tyler said.

"What?" Josh asked with a grin.

"You didn't actually..."

"Yes I did," Josh smiled. "A week of just you and me in a romantic cabin in Colorado celebrating our love. We can do whatever you want there."

Tyler blushed and smiled widely, tackling him in a hug. "Joshua, you're so sweet."

"I love you so much," Josh grinned. "And I can't wait to have a week of just you and me alone together."
