Last Goodbye

Tyler woke up to a kiss on his forehead.

"Hey, baby," Josh said softly.

Tyler looked at his husband and his eyes filled with tears. "Joshie..."

"Shhh, baby," Josh whispered, crawling into bed with him and wrapping his arms around him. "Sh sh shhh. It's okay. It's okay."

He set the cup of coffee he had made for Tyler on his bedside table so he could hold him in both arms. He kissed his head and ran his fingers through Tyler's hair.

They sat in bed for a while, Tyler sniffling as Josh held him with teary eyes.

"What do you wanna do today?" Josh asked softly. "We can do anything in the world."

Tyler shrugged, simply finding Josh's hands and slipping his own into them.

He turned in Josh's lap so he was facing him, burying his face in Josh's neck as he started to cry.

"Baby..." Josh said softly, rubbing his back gently.

Tyler just continued to sob, Josh kissing his shoulder as he held him.

Ruby opened the door because she wanted to spend some time with Josh before he left tomorrow, but she saw Tyler was crying and probably wanted to be alone with him, so she quietly shut the door and left.

Josh and spent all day yesterday just one-on-one with her, so Ruby figured it would be best if she let Tyler spend the majority of the day alone with Josh. She knew how hard deployment was on Tyler.

So she went out to the kitchen and made breakfast for everyone.

About 30 minutes later, she knocked on the door of their room softly before entering. She saw the exact scene she had left. Tyler was crying in Josh's lap, Josh telling him he loved him over and over again in attempt to comfort him.

"I-I made breakfast," Ruby said, carrying in the two bowls of oatmeal and fruit for the boys.

"Thank you, sweetheart," Josh smiled as he took one of the bowls in his hand. "Look, Ty. Ruby made us breakfast."

Tyler sniffled and wiped his eyes, getting off of Josh's lap and sitting by him. "T-thank you, honey. T-that's very sweet of you."

Ruby nodded, handing him his breakfast before turning to go.

"Y-you don't wanna eat with us?" Tyler asked.

"N-no, no," Ruby said, shaking her head. "I-it's okay. I've got some homework I need to do anyway."

She left the room, closing the door on her way out.

Tyler got back into Josh's lap, eating a tiny bit but eventually putting it down because he was too sad to eat.

The boys spent the majority of the day in their room, but eventually went to the living room because Tyler didn't feel like it was fair to keep Josh all to himself the day before he was deployed.

Ruby joined them on the couch. They all watched a movie then went through Josh and Tyler's wedding photos. Josh picked a few that he would take with him, along with several of he, Tyler, and Ruby together.

They ate lunch together then all went out to dinner a few hours after.

They came home, and Ruby had to say her last goodbye. Josh would have to leave early in the morning before she got up.

She hugged him tightly, crying softly. Josh wiped his own tears and hugged her back, kissing her cheek. He told her he loved her and that he'd be home before she knew it, and that he expected to hear from her at least twice a month and to stay away from all boys who aren't Tyler.

Ruby went to bed, the boys heading back to their room.

Tyler sat on the bed while Josh packed. He eventually finished, and the boys were left in bed. Their limbs were entangled, tears stained Tyler's cheeks.

"I love you so much," Josh said, running his fingers through Tyler's hair. "I promise I'm going to skype you at least twice a month. I promise. You'll get to see me and we'll get to talk and we can send letters and everything."

Tyler just continued to cry.

It was a sleepless night for both of the boys.

At 4:30 in the morning, Josh was giving his husband his last kiss goodbye before heading out the door to enter his year long deployment for the military, and Tyler was left weeping in his room.
