Baby Sister

Josh yawned, suddenly grunting as he felt something plop down on his belly.

"I got Hazel," Ruby said before leaving the room.

"Hi, Hazel!" Josh grinned, happily playing with his six month old daughter while his five year old went to watch TV in the living room.

Ever since Hazel joined the Dun family, Ruby hadn't been too happy. At first, she was really excited to have a sister. But once she actually got here, her JishJish didn't pay much attention to her anymore.

He didn't take her out for special Josh and Ruby time, he didn't play games or draw with her. He just didn't really do anything with her anymore.

And Tyler had caught on to Ruby being sad, so he tried to be extra there for her. She used to be a total Daddy's girl for Josh, but now, she spent most of her day with Tyler.

"Hey, sweetheart," Tyler said as he sat down on the couch next to her. "I thought you were gonna ask JishJish to watch a movie with you."

"He didn't even notice me when I walked in," Ruby said. "I just put Hazel on him and left. He didn't say hi or anything."

Tyler bit his lip. He knew it was a problem when Josh wouldn't even say hi to Ruby when she got home from school. He would only pay attention to her sister.

"Well you can watch a movie with me," Tyler said. "You can always watch a movie with me."

"I-I know, TyTy," Ruby said. "A-and you're great and the best daddy ever, b-but I miss when JishJish wanted to be with me."

Tyler sighed. He knew he had to talk to his husband. "How about you go pick anything you want from the candy drawer, ok? Anything you want. King sized, huge, anything that's in there, it's yours."

Ruby shrugged. "I don't want any candy."

"Here, I know. Go pick out some nail polish and we can paint our nails while we watch a movie. Sound good?"

Ruby shrugged again but this time, nodded. She went to her room and picked out colors while Tyler went into his and Josh's bedroom.

"Babe?" He asked as he walked in, seeing his husband happily lying on the bed playing with a giggling baby.

"Oh, hey Ty," he grinned. "What's up?"

"We gotta talk," Tyler said, sitting down on the bed. "About Ruby."

"What about her?"

"Oh, I don't know, maybe the fact that you're completely ignoring her!" Tyler exclaimed. Suddenly, he had snapped. He and Josh had agreed that if they adopted another kid, the attention would be divided equally among the kids. Josh wasn't holding up his end of the deal.

"How am I ignoring her?"

"You didn't show up for her pre-school graduation because you wanted to stay home with Hazel, you didn't come with us to drop her off for her first day of kindergarten because you wanted to be with Hazel, and you didn't even ask her how her day went! She said you haven't even talked to her in days! We made a deal, Josh. You were the one begging to have another kid, and I only agreed because the time was going to be split up evenly between Hazel and Ruby, but now I'm having to play the role of two parents for Ruby because one is completely ignoring her for her sibling!"

This was the first time Tyler had ever yelled at Josh.

"I don't see what the issue is," Josh said.

"Oh my god! You don't see what the issue is?! How?! How the hell do you not see the issue in ignoring one of your kids and giving all of your attention to the other!"

"I'm not doing that!"

"Yes you are! Did you not listen to anything I just said?!"

"Hazel just needs a little extra love," Josh said, holding the baby close.

"That doesn't mean you get to stop loving your other kid!" Tyler exclaimed. "It'd be different if you two were never close, but you were, and then you just suddenly stopped doing everything with her. She cries at least once a day because you don't spend time with her! You don't even acknowledge her! No matter where we go or what we do, you're only taking care of Hazel!"

"So you just take care of Ruby, I'll take care of Hazel!" Josh exclaimed. "There! Problem solved!"

"Do you have any idea how parenting works?! There are two parents for a reason! We adopted both of our kids together! We are raising them together! Equally!"

Josh just shrugged.

Tyler was furious now. He took Hazel out of Josh's arms and started walking out the door.

"Where are you going?"

"I'm taking Hazel with me to go grocery shopping," Tyler said. "Do you know why? Because I, her father, haven't been able to do something with just her because you won't let me! And I'm too busy taking care of Ruby, anyways!"

Ruby was looking up at Tyler when he entered the living room. "W-where're you going, daddy?"

"I'm taking Hazel grocery shopping with me, sweetheart," Tyler said calmly, kissing her forehead. "You're gonna stay here."

"I-I don't wanna be alone," Ruby said.

"You won't be alone, princess. JishJish is here."

"B-but he won't do anything with me," Ruby said. "H-he won't make dinner o-or watch a movie with me o-or even talk to me!"

"Do you see what I mean now, Josh?" Tyler asked, looking up at his husband. "Do you see the issue now?"

He put Ruby in her baby carrier and headed to his car, leaving Josh alone with Ruby.

Josh sighed and leaned back against the wall.

Ruby sniffled and went to her room. It was obvious JishJish wasn't going to acknowledge her yet again.

Except about an hour later, there was a knock on her door.

She peeked out, seeing Josh wearing a tiara and holding a plate of cookies.

"I was think maybe we'd have a RuRu-JishJish tea party like we used to," Josh said.

Ruby shook her head.

"Do you wanna watch a movie, then?"

Ruby shook her head again.

"Go get ice cream?"

Again, no.

"What do you wanna do?"

"I wanna draw."

"Ok," Josh said. "Let's draw."

Ruby opened the door more so Josh could enter. He walked in, looking around. "I didn't know you painted your room yellow."

"TyTy did it."

Josh nodded, sitting down on her carpeted floor at the table they used to always draw on together.

He was more than a little surprised when Ruby sat in her own chair instead of sitting in his lap.

"What're you gonna draw?" Josh asked.

"Something for TyTy."

"Cool."

And then it was quiet. All that could be heard was crayon against paper.

Josh spoke up about fifteen minutes later.

"TyTy said you've been sad lately," he said quietly.

"Yeah," she replied softly.

"Why've you been sad?"

"Because you don't love me anymore."

"What???" Josh asked, pulling her into his lap. "Ruby, why would you ever say that?"

"Because you only love Hazel. She's the only person you spend time with anymore. You don't even spend time with TyTy. And he's your husband."

Josh chewed on his lip. Ruby was right. He couldn't remember the last time he took Tyler out on a date or even told him that he loved him.

"I-I love you both," Josh said. "I love you and TyTy so much. I just... i dunno. I guess I've just gotten caught up with Hazel. A-and you've always been so independent I just thought you'd maybe like not being around me so much," Josh shrugged.

Ruby shook her head. "I always liked being with you, JishJish. I always liked JishJish-RuRu dates and watching movies with you and snuggling with you. B-but I don't wanna do it if you don't love me anymore."

"I love you so much, Ruby," Josh said. "You have no idea. And I'm really, really sorry I've made you sad and feel like I don't love you anymore. I really, really don't mean to, ok?"

Ruby nodded her head. "Ok."

"Do you still love me?"

"Mhm," Ruby said. "I've always loved you, JishJish."

"I've always loved you too, princess," Josh said. "Even though I wasn't acting like it. But I'm gonna start acting like it, ok?"

Ruby nodded. "Ok."

"We should have an entire JishJish-RuRu date day tomorrow. Just you and me," Josh said. "What sounds like fun?"

"I want TyTy and Hazel to come too," she said.

"So you don't want it to be just you and me?" Josh asked.

Ruby shook her head. "Not tomorrow. I wanna see you and daddy hold hands again."

Josh teared up. Damn, he really had been an awful husband/father the past few months.

"Don't worry about me and daddy, RuRu. We're gonna be perfectly ok. I promise. But don't you worry about us."

"But I wanna play with Hazel," Ruby said. "I haven't been allowed to yet."

Three months since her sister joined her family and she still hadn't gotten to play with her.

"Ok," Josh said. "We can definitely do that. Do you Maybe wanna go get ice cream tomorrow, though? Just me and you?"

"I want you to take TyTy to get ice cream," Ruby said.

"Sweetheart, I told you not to worry about us."

"I know," Ruby said. "But I want you to do somethin' special for him. He hasn't felt special in a long time."

Josh sighed but nodded. "Do you wanna do anything with just me tomorrow?"

"You should come to dance with me."

"Dance? I didn't know you take dance."

"Mhm."

"I'll gladly go to dance with you, sweetheart."

And so the next day marked the first day of Josh repairing his relationships with two of his family members.

He took Tyler out on a date that night after going to dance class with Ruby. Jenna came over and watched Ruby and Hazel while Ruby was over the moon excited to finally get to spend time with her baby sister.

Josh apologized to Tyler for not really being there the past three months, promising he'd be better.

Tyler sighed but accepted the apology, making it clear he didn't want anything like this to ever happen again.

And, it didn't.

Josh and Ruby became close again, Tyler got to spend time with Hazel, Ruby and Hazel got to have girl time together, and Tyler and Josh finally were back to their happily married selves, always loving on each other.

So everyone was close to everyone.

Just how they had planned.
