Chapter 6: The Tempo of Battle
When (Y/N) returned to UA a few days later she looked around the classroom. She walked over to Midoriya and asked what all happened while she was away. "Did you not see the news?" He asked. She shook her head. "I was sick remember?" She questioned, holding out a fake doctor's note that Kurogiri had forged for her using the name of a doctor in the area. For as far as UA was concerned, (Y/N) was lucky enough to have gotten sick and avoided the tragic incident that resulted in the deaths of two students. Midoriya nodded and she placed the note on Aizawa's desk before returning to the green haired male. He explained what all had happened and (Y/N) feigned shock. "That's horrible...I feel bad that I wasn't there to help...you're okay right...?" She asked, lacing her tone with fake concern and remorse. "I'm fine, I'm fine. Just in shock. Its been a few days but it still comes as...shocking." Midoriya himself didn't have words for what happened. Two of his classmates had died after all. Everyone was shaken. Besides (Y/N) who was mainly faking her shock and concern. Said girl moved to her seat next to Todoroki, who was currently napping. Poor boy was tired. His father had been overworking him since he couldn't defeat the villain he fought. (Y/N) saw how tired he was and decided to be extra quiet, as to not disturb him. Then again, if he can sleep through this mess of a classroom he should be fine even without her being quiet. Then again, she was quiet normally. She pulled out her sketch book and continued her drawing of Aizawa emerging from his cocoon-sleeping bag thing as a beautiful butterfly. Inspired of course by Aizawa and his cocoon-sleeping bag thing. She was bored and wanted something to do in her free time. She also needed a new book to read. She planned on heading to the Library after school, maybe do some research on Quirks and see if she can find anything useful.
Class started up soon after and she woke up Todoroki gently. Honestly, the male had grown used to this. It was a common occurrence in the mornings that he'd be asleep and (Y/N) would wake him up. He thanked her quietly, like normal, and the morning's lesson continued. Besides talk of the Sports Festival and the fact that Aizawa was covered in bandages, nothing out of the ordinary happened. Not even a single mention of the USJ Incident. (Y/N) continued sketching, ignoring most of the lesson and only tuning in for the basic explanation and doing the problems assigned. Once class was dismissed (Y/N) packed up her stuff, left some cookies on Aizawa's desk because even the villain is allowed to be grateful for good teachers, and left. The day dragged on and eventually came to an end with their Hero Studies. Today they were going to do some light sparring. "Alright." Aizawa grumbled, looking at each student. "Quirks are not everything. There may come a point in time where you won't be able to use your Quirk for certain scenarios. Whether you're facing someone like me, who can take your Quirk away at will, or if you're reaching your limits with your Quirk. In this class, you will expand on the limits of your Quirks, but for right now, having solid hand to hand combat skills is a necessary skill for any hero. In this Quirk-Focused Society of ours, even a lowly thug can take out a skilled Pro. Why? Because most people nowadays rely too much on Quirks. And all it takes to end a fight is one good punch in the right place. So today, we'll be doing some light sparring. No Quirks outside of those of you who cannot deactivate your Quirks or have mutant types. This class is mainly for Emitter Types." Aizawa explained. Everyone nodded in agreement and Bakugo seemed slightly ticked. Then again, he was a Quirk centered fighter. They set it up tournament style with one on one battles. There were nineteen students that could do battle and so far (Y/N), Kirishima, Ojiro, Shouji, Satou, Todoroki, Bakugo, and Midoriya were doing the best but by far (Y/N) was killing it.
Eleven students struggling, three were at the least decent. And the last five were excelling. Not bad in Aizawa's opinion, better than his last few classes. Bakugo, Midoriya, and Todoroki needed improvement. Midoriya was good with surprising his opponents with counters and dodging, he was fast and could take a lot of hits but when he lost his surprise element against those more skilled he was quickly dispatched. Todoroki was pretty good. But you could tell he was restraining himself from using his Quirk at times. He spent most of his life improving his Quirk and had neglected a number of hand to hand basics, which is probably why the 'Mysterious Female Villain' from the USJ got the upper hand on him. She was a quick and nimble fighter like Midoriya but actually knew what the f*ck she was doing. Much like (Y/N) who had a similar fighting style and primarily uses weapons. Bakugo was okay. But much like Todoroki he struggled with not activating his Quirk. His punches and kicks packed a lot of punch but he blocked most hits instead of dodging and nearly used his Quirk a number of times to counter.
Those more adapt at fighting hand to hand, like Ojiro, (Y/N), Kirishima, Satou, and Shouji were doing very well. Kirishima's Quirk was always based on defense and strong counters. Since his Quirk only makes his skin tough as rocks his fighting style is primarily hand to hand. Shouji's Quirk is more adapt for recon and likewise tasks however he has the strength and knows all the basics of hand to hand combat. He can tank hits and dish them back twice as hard. He's speedy for his size too so that's another bonus but he did fall prey to (Y/N)'s quick and furious non-stop attacks. Satou's Quirk would bulk him up when he ate something sugary but without his Quirk he was a very good hand to hand fighter. Granted he relied mainly on punches, but he was quick on the draw and made quick work of most opponents. Ojiro's fighting style involved different martial arts styles mixed in with fighting using his tail. His tail was strong and he was allowed to use it mainly because its not something he can deactivate. Using his tail to block, counter, and strike as well as dodge was really good. Plus the fact that he knew how to use his hands too. Then there was (Y/N), truly the person to beat in this little contest. (Y/N) couldn't use any weapons but without the strain of having a weapon or two summoned constantly zapping her stamina she was even faster than normal and more powerful in her strikes. (Y/N) was primarily a weaponed fighter, but she knew all the tricks of hand to hand and understood that you can't be disarmed if your weapon is your own body. She did not need her Quirk to wipe out half of the class. The agile fighters couldn't keep up with her. The punch first ask questions later fighters fell victim to her taunt and dodge tactics. The strength based fighters had an edge but in the end failed because of (Y/N)'s experience in fighting and also fell prey to some of her more underhanded tactics.
There was something odd about the way she fought. Something...rhythmic. When it looked like she was about to lose she did...something that made everyone dizzy. She was constantly changing her speed and tactics, moving swift and graceful one minute and then taking hits and dishing them back the next. She was an opponent the others just didn't know what to do with. She seemed to adapt mid battle and come up with perfect counter strategies to everyone's fighting styles. Midoriya was having a field day, muttering while taking notes at a breakneck pace. Todoroki was also in awe, wondering how she was doing this.
Time ran out before they could finish the sparring and the school day ended. (Y/N) packed up her things and before she left the school she was approached by Todoroki. "Hey." He said, trying to get her attention. She gave him a look, stopping at the school gate. "Yes?" She asked. "That...thing. You did during the fights. What was it?" He asked. (Y/N) raised an eyebrow. "What thing?" She asked. "The thing that made everyone dizzy. When you would suddenly switch up your speed or tactics and completely turn the tides of the battle." He said. (Y/N) smirked a bit. "Sorry. Trade secret." She said, starting to walk off. And that only made the male more curious. Every day, after school, he'd ask her what that was. The Sports Festival slowly approaching with each passing day and a day or two before the Festival, (Y/N) finally gave in....to some extent.
"What I'm doing is controlling the Tempo of Battle. And that's all I'm telling you. You can do your own research if you want." She smirks a little. "Or ask your father. He probably knows what it is. I bet he knows all too well." That statement really made Todoroki curious. And as much as he hated to ask his b*stard of a father anything, he sat down at the diner table that night much to Endeavor's surprise. "Shoto? Have you finally gotten over your rebellion yet?" Endeavor asked. Todoroki glared at him. "You wish. I wanted to ask you something." He said. Endeavor sneered a little. "Only come to me when you need something...What is it?" He asked. "What's the Tempo of Battle?" Todoroki asked. The Pro Hero sputtered a little, in the middle of drinking something and was now trying to not choke on the drink. Then again if he dropped dead right there it would certainly make Todoroki's day. Eventually, after the man recovered, Endeavor glared at Todoroki. "Where did you hear that from?" He growled. "Nowhere you need to concern yourself with. Now what is it?" Todoroki asked. Endeavor was fuming, his flames getting a bit more intense. "The Tempo of Battle is a belief. Its the belief that each battle has a tempo, a rhythm, and that it can be controlled. Any kind of fight, battle, anything at all. It has a rhythm or tempo. Its said that if you control the Tempo you control the Fight." He hissed. "And it's a stupid battle style that's used by criminals, vigilantes, and underhanded people that you shouldn't associate with. So whoever you learned that phrase from you better avoid them." Endeavor hissed. "Last I checked you don't get to decide who I choose to spend my time with. Why are you so p*ssy with this subject?" Todoroki asked. "Strong, honorable fighters don't need underhanded tactics! Know your place Shoto! I don't want to hear anything else about the Tempo of Battle! Its a waste of time and something you should've never learned about!" Endeavor snapped.
Todoroki went up to his room after that and did some digging online.
