Chapter 3: The Fox
Todoroki woke up exactly on time, as always. In the back of his mind he cursed having to wake up so early but alas, it was always like this. He got up and followed through on his morning routine. He got breakfast, eating by himself like he normally does in the mornings. And then left for the train station in the UA uniform. As he was making his way over there, his reader ability picked up bits and pieces of the lives of other people around him. A single mother who's currently overwhelmed with pride. Five year old kids walking to school. A few teenage girls gossiping about some of the latest rumors. A man doing some April shopping for his wife. All of this was evident thanks to Todoroki's reader ability, combined with the analysis ability. He got on his train and activated his reader ability again. He couldn't help it when he was bored. Sometimes when he looked into the lives of others, he forgot all about who he was. He could allow himself to get swept up in the madness of other lives around him. Read other people's stories. He spotted a couple of UA uniforms dotting the train. Forcing him out of that reader state and back into reality. Todoroki knew he'd be arriving early. He always did. Hell, he wouldn't be surprised if he was one of the first in the classroom. He got in on recommendations. Thanks to his father's influence. But he almost wished he could've taken the normal exams. Just so he could spot the more powerful players early on.
The train arrived at his stop. Todoroki managed to navigate the sea of human activity. He had grown pretty good at it. And it honestly shocked him how open people left themselves when they were moving in a crowd. One of the only lessons he actually remembers willingly, never let your guard down. He came up on the UA building, noting once again the large gates that must have cost a small fortune. Like seriously, how much money was wasted on those things? Todoroki continued his way up to Classroom 1-A. Eventually finding the door. Well this is gonna be hard to remember. God I'm sleepy. He thought. He opened the door and looked inside. A few kids were waiting but only two or three. A blue haired male with glasses. A (H/C) haired female with red eyes. And a black haired female wearing her hair in a spiky ponytail. I remember that girl from recommendations. Momo Yaoyorozu. Her Quirk lets her create things. Todoroki thought, going to sit down between Yaoyorozu and the (H/C) haired female. The female on his right shot him a quick glance. She had what appeared to be a sketchbook out. Todoroki met her glance and she dropped eye contact and focused on what she was drawing. Shy, or just socially awkward. Probably not a person I should bother unless she comes to me first. He noted. He noted the other two in the room. Yaoyorozu appeared to be reading a book, while the blue haired male was just sitting with straight posture. Rich girl. I know that because she was on recommendations. The guy over there seems professional. Maybe from a hero family. Don't use your reader ability again Shoto. Don't be a creep. Try to actually socialize and find out about your classmates via talking to them. It'd be weird if you talked to them already knowing what their personalities and Quirks are like.... He hissed at himself mentally. Despite knowing he wasn't exactly the best when it came to socializing. After a while he got bored and rested his head on his desk, closing his eyes.
Todoroki felt a tap on his shoulder and shot awake. The female sitting on his right stared at him for a little bit. "We're heading outside. Got to put the PE uniforms on. You dozed off through our teacher showing up." She explained. Todoroki blinked a little before nodding. "Thanks for letting me know." He said. She nodded in return before grabbing her gym bag and heading out the door with the rest of them. He yawned a little before getting his things and following. Maybe not as socially awkward as I originally thought. But still not one for conversation. He thought. Once everyone had changed and moved out to the field, the homeroom teacher, Shota Aizawa, explained that they'd be doing a Quirk assessment test. "What about the entrance ceremony? The orientation?" A girl with brown hair and a round face questioned. "If you're going to become a hero, you don't have time for such leisurely events." Aizawa responded. And thus, he searched the crowd. "(L/N), you scored top on the practical exam." He said. The (H/C) haired girl with red eyes stiffened up with a slight look of confusion in her eyes. "In Jr. High what was your best result for the softball throw?" Aizawa asked. (L/N) looked deep in thought for a minute. "I believe 56 meters." She responded. "Then, try doing it with your Quirk." Aizawa said, tossing her a softball. She caught it easily with a lazy expression. She walked to the circle with calm confidence. She then looked back over at us. "Bakugo, you're annoying. Say something to p*ss me off." She said. Todoroki raised an eyebrow. Is her Quirk activated by anger? He thought. "WHAT THE HELL!? WHY AM I THE ONE YOU CALL ON!?" Bakugo shouted at her. "Because you always manage to p*ss me off somehow. So just do your thing." She responded. "Language." Aizawa cautioned. "English." (L/N) responded, causing a few people to chuckle. Aizawa sighed. "Alright. How about this. Person that scores the lowest in these tests gets expelled." Aizawa said. Shock rippled through the class and (L/N) blinked at Aizawa a little. Suddenly red mist surrounded her and started swirling. Out of no where a bazooka or something fell into her arms, forcing gasps from most of the class. She loaded the ball into it before pointing it in a random direction and stabilizing her stance. She pulled the trigger with no remorse what so ever. And the ball went flying. It went far off into the distance and Aizawa turned to show (L/N) as well as the class, the meters on her.....'throw'. 735.9 Meters. Not bad. (L/N) stood up straight and the cannon vanished from her arms, fading into red mist. She shot a look at Aizawa. "I do not approve of that form of teaching. But have it your way sir. I'll play your game." (L/N) said. Aizawa smirks. "Remember. The person that gets last place, in all eight tests, gets expelled." He said.
Todoroki wasn't worried. He knew he'd do fine. He also doubted that this teacher would actually expel anyone. But he looked around, noting things about his new classmates. Especially that (L/N) girl. There was something about her that stood out to him. But he couldn't quite place what it was. This would be a time to use the reader ability. But they were already moving onto the next test. As he thought, Todoroki flew through the tests with ease. But the last test being the softball throw, a plain kid with green hair finally got the chance to show off his Quirk. And it blew everyone away. Literally. Everyone was shocked. Even the (L/N) girl had a shocked expression. But the person that seemed to take it the worst was the Bakugo kid. He launched forward with explosions in his palms screaming, 'Deku you b*stered,' at the top of his lunges. 'Deku' froze up and closed his eyes, and in a flash, (L/N) was there. Bakugo froze. And everyone gasped. She held a scythe, standing defensively in front of Deku. She held the blade of the large weapon up slightly, towards Bakugo's neck with a cold expression. Her red eyes seemed to be glowing. Bakugo chuckled slightly. "You would have a scythe, wouldn't you reaper?" He questioned. "I'm not a d*mn reaper Bakugo." She responded calmly. "Scythes are cool weapons, and you just always manage to p*ss me off." (L/N) said. "Now then. You have two options here, just like the first time I protected Midoriya. Continue, and someone's gonna get knocked on his a*s. Or back down, and nobody has to get hurt." She growled. "Is that a threat?" Bakugo questioned in a menacing tone. "No. That's a promise." The (H/C) haired female responded. Bakugo suddenly tensed up, a look of fear flashing in his eyes. He started backing up, gritting his teeth as the explosions started up in his palms again.
"R-reaper! Bad omen! They were all right about you! You're a crazy person!" Bakugo shouted. (L/N) sighed, letting go of the scythe and letting it disappear into red mist. She pinched the bridge of her nose. "I'm not a reaper." She grumbled. "And while yes, a majority of those rumors were true. But Bakugo, something to note for future reference." She trailed off before looking up with a smirk. "Maybe I am a little crazy. But so what if I am? Everyone's a little crazy deep inside. So what if I'm crazy when everyone else is too?" She said. Todoroki was shocked by her words. Knowing that barely anyone followed what she was talking about. But he followed. And realized just how insane this girl was. Socially awkward, but she's confident. Her Quick is insanely powerful. And she seems to be surrounded by rumors. I can see lots of people calling her almost villainous. Todoroki thought. Bakugo scoffed, crossing his arms before turning around and stomping back towards the group. "Don't understand why Deku is her f*cking friend. Crazy insane reaper b*tch." Bakugo grumbled. She tilted her head to the side at Bakugo's words before shooting a look at the green haired boy. "Are we....um...are we friends?" She asked, looking really nervous all of a sudden. Deku/Midoriya/whatever his name was smiled brightly at her. "Of course (Y/N)!" He said. She seemed taken aback by that before smiling a small but happy smile. She mumbled something under her breath that Todoroki couldn't quite hear before running over to him. "C'mon. Let's get you to Recovery Girl to see about that finger." She said. He nodded a little. "Wait...don't we need a pass for that?" He questioned. "Already got one." (L/N) said, holding up a piece of paper. Aizawa's hands darted for his back pocket before he shot her a glare. "Clever. But don't do that again." He hissed. "Then don't threaten to expel us again. That was very rude sensei." She responded.
And with that her and Midoriya left for Recovery Girl's office. Meanwhile everyone else was left to ponder what had just happened. The rest of the day was spent with Aizawa explaining the curriculum and how the schedule would work. After that school was over. On his way to the train station Todoroki eavesdropped on Izuku Midoriya talking with Uraraka and Iida. Walking behind their group and waiting until someone brought up (L/N). "Hey Deku, that friend of your's is crazy!" Uraraka commented. Midoriya sweatdropped. "Yeah. (Y/N) is really crazy huh?" He muttered. "Speaking of (L/N) where is she? I expected her to walk you home." Iida said. "Back at our Jr. High she would walk with me on occasion. Other times, like this one, she flat out disappears." He explained. "So you guys went to Jr. High together?" Uraraka questioned. "Yeah." Midoriya suddenly looked down. "Back then I believed the rumors, just like everyone else. And kept my distance from her. But then, one day when Kacchan was bothering me, she jumped in to protect me. We've talked ever since. And I'd say we're kinda close." Midoriya said. "Do you think it's possible she's your Soulmate?" Iida asked. "Oh no no no. Of course not. (Y/N)'s a great person once you get her to open up slightly, but she's definitely not my Soulmate. She doesn't really fit a purple cat does she?" Midoriya questioned. "No. Definitely not. I think a fox is more accurate." Uraraka said. "Or maybe a crow? Since Bakugo called her a reaper and bad omen." At that line Todoroki froze. The three continued chattering as they walked but the male had become rooted in place. A crow? He thought, his right hand reaching up and covering his left shoulder. "Is it possible?" He muttered to himself. "If she's represented by a crow would that mean...?" He trailed off. Did I....is she....? His thought trailed off as well. Todoroki's entire world had just flipped. And he was left with one question to ponder.
Was (Y/N) his Soulmate?
