Chapter 28: Izaya's Secret
Time moves quickly for us. Me and the Personas I mean. It's been months since we began our first year at UA and summer is already coming up. Of course our first semester finals were nothing to sneeze at. The written test was hard, even for Darkheart. And the physical portion. Oh boy....having to fight our teachers was not fun... Aizawa is a tough opponent. My partner for the fight was Momo. Who had been having confidence issues lately. Heh. Guess we can relate to her in that regard. I felt sorry for Bakugo and Izuku whom had to fight All Might. But me and Momo had a tough time with Aizawa. Still, we found it odd that when he uses his Quirk on us, it leads to him cancelling our powers, but not my Personas. I can still hear them. Maybe I can take it up with Izaya. He might know whats up.
...
Shoto had been missing for the past few school days. Nobody has seen him since the Hero Killer incident. And nobody knows where he went. I had the faintest idea. Since I now knew he was a villain. Shockingly, I decided against telling someone about Shoto's villainy. He...he kept my secret. I'll keep his. I was tired after having to fight Aizawa, so when I returned to Shinjuku and Izaya's apartment I was exhausted. I opened the door. "I'm back." I announced. Izaya looked at me from his desk. "Welcome back (Y/N)." He greeted. I walked over and sat on the couch, not noticing the blond ex-bartender sitting across from me in one of the chairs. "Hey Shizuo." I greeted. "Hi (Y/N)." He responded. My eyes snapped into alertness. "Wait. SHIZUO!?" I shouted, giving him a shocked look. He scratched the back of his neck a little with a shrug. "What?" He asked. I looked from him to Izaya in shock. "U-um. Forgive me for asking, but...WHAT THE HELL!?" I shouted pointing from the raven to the blond. "How are you two in the same room and not trying to kill eachother!?" I shouted. "I needed to ask the flea for a favor. As much as I hate it...." Shizuo grumbled. Izaya smirked with a chuckle. "Always happy to be of help. Even to my worst enemy." He said. That's when Izaya's phone started going off. With an...odd ringtone. Hey Brother. I shot Izaya a look and he sweatdropped a bit. "Sorry. Gotta take this." He said, pulling out a...smartphone instead of a flip phone. Both me and Shizuo exchanged looks as he answered. "What do you want?" Izaya asked in a hateful tone that was very uncommon with him. I tried to hear the other end of the conversation but I couldn't. "My answer is no." Izaya growled. "Because, I don't feel like doing a favor for you." He responded. His eyes hardened into an even more hateful glare. "I don't owe you anything. If anything, you owe me." Izaya spat. His voice calm and flat. But still full of hate. "You know d*mn well why you owe me b*stard." He growled. He was silent as his eyes flashed with regret. He sighed. "Fair point." He grumbled. He froze up, eyes consumed by rage again. "I don't have to tell you a d*mn thing! You may be my older brother, but I don't have to listen to you!" Me and Shizuo stared at Izaya in shock as he got up and walked over to the window behind him. Back turned to us. "No. Of course not. I don't even know her." Izaya said in a cold flat tone again. "I'm not lying. Why would she be here?" He shot back to the person on the phone. "Once again brother, she doesn't even know me. I've never been a part of her life." Suddenly Izaya tensed up. "I have no idea what you're talking about. I had nothing to do with it. They didn't come from me." He growled. "DON'T YOU DARE PLAY DUMB WITH ME!" The person on the phone shouted loudly. Izaya held the phone away from his ear before glaring at it. That's when I noticed something that shocked me to no end. Izaya's dark brown eyes were slowly turning into a blood red crimson. The same blood red crimson that showed in my left eye. I could see it clearly in the his reflection in the glass as he turned back around to face it. "I'M NOT PLAYING DUMB. I TOLD YOU. I DON'T KNOW WHERE SHE IS. SHE ISN'T HERE. AND I MOST CERTAINLY DID NOT SEND HER THE PHONE AND COAT. I'VE HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH HER LIFE. YOU'VE MADE D*MN SURE OF THAT." Izaya shouted back. "SHE STARTED ACTING LIKE YOU AFTER SHE GOT THAT PHONE AND COAT. I KNOW YOU'VE HAD CONTACT WITH HER." The other person shouted.
"THEN BLAME THE PERSON THAT GAVE HER THE COAT AND PHONE. MAYBE THEY HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT." Izaya shouted back. Me and Shizuo shot eachother another look. Both in confusion. "What the hell is going on?" Shizuo whispered to me. "I have no idea." I responded quietly. Suddenly Izaya whipped around, tears in his eyes causing me and Shizuo to reach peek confusion. The room's temperature began to sky rocket. "DO YOU THINK IT DOESN'T HURT!? THE FACT THAT I HAD TO GIVE HER TO YOU!? YOU ALWAYS TOOK AFTER FATHER. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT YOU'VE DONE TO HER! I WAS ALWAYS THE STRONGEST OUT OF US. DESPITE BEING YOUNGER I WAS ALWAYS SMARTER. THE ONLY REASON I GAVE HER TO YOU WAS BECAUSE I COULDN'T TAKE CARE OF HER. I WAS TOO YOUNG. BUT SHE ISN'T HERE. IT'S NOT MY F*CKING FAULT SHE LEFT YOUR BROKEN A*S HOUSEHOLD. I'VE HEARD WHAT YOU'VE DONE TO YOUR WIFE. TO YOUR ACTUAL F*CKING KIDS. I'M AN INFO BROKER D*MNIT. YOU THINK I WOULDN'T KNOW THIS!?" Izaya shouted. His voice holding nothing but pain and rage. "I HAVEN'T HAD CONTACT WITH HER. NO MATTER HOW MUCH I WANTED TO. I CAN'T BELIEVE I GAVE HER TO YOU. I WAS A STUPID KID TO EVEN CONSIDER IT. YOU WERE A S*IT BROTHER. AND YOU STILL ARE NOW. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE HOW TERRIBLE OF A PARENT YOU'VE BEEN TO HER. CONSIDERING WHAT'S HAPPENED TO YOUR WIFE AND YOUR KIDS, I CAN ONLY IMAGINE HOW YOU'D TREAT THE CHILD THAT ISN'T EVEN YOURS. THEN AGAIN, YOU DON'T FEEL GUILT. NOR REMORSE. AND I DOUBT YOU EVEN HAVE A SINGLE SHRED OF EMOTION. I BET FATHER RIPPED THAT OUT OF YOU FROM THE MOMENT YOU WERE BORN." Izaya shouted. He took a few deep breathes before sighing out slowly. "Even if she was here, why would I give her back to you? Why would I tell you? Give me one good reason." Izaya hissed, tears streaming down his cheeks. He chuckled faintly. "You think I give a d*mn about the legal half of it? I'm an Info Broker brother. Dodging the law is what I do best." Izaya commented. "Oh? Resorting the blackmail are we? She's not even here. And you don't even know where I am. And don't forget, you're not the only person here with blackmail. Considering how many times I've had to help cover up what you've done. How do you think the press would react to hearing that you've abused your wife and your children? Face it. No matter your position, you can't touch me." Izaya hissed. "You may be a top hero brother. But you have nothing on me. I've always been better than you. And my power far exceeds yours." Izaya said with a smirk. "Never call me again. And don't you dare call her your daughter in my presence!" Izaya snapped. "Goodbye brother." He hissed. And with that he hung up the phone. For a minute he stood frozen. Just as everyone else was in the room. Even Shizuo was in shock. Izaya grit his teeth before hurling the phone at the wall and collapsing to his knees. Tears falling fast.
I jumped up and hopped over the couch before kneeling in front of him. "Izaya. Izaya what was that about? Why are your eyes red? Izaya what happened are you alright!?" I asked in a panic. Izaya slowly looked up at me as his eyes faded back to brown. The red glow gone. "(Y-Y/N)...um...sorry you had to see that. I...know I tell you all the time that you need to control your emotions. But...it's just...that was...my older brother on the phone...I...always get like that with him around. H-heh....my family...I don't really get along with them..." He said. I sat there in heavy confusion as Shizuo got up and walked over. "Never knew you had a brother flea. I've only ever met your sisters." He said. Izaya avoided eye contact. "I...actually have a big family. Two older brothers and two younger sisters. Our oldest brother had the best life out of us. He grew up to be a kind man. Taking after both our parents. But only the best aspects. He never got their terrible side. Then along came my second brother. Who...took after our father. But he took after the worst aspects. After my first brother left home, mother and father became cruel. And me and my older brother were born in that situation. A few years apart. He grew to be more of our father's cruel. My father saw him as his true successor. Being that my brother was born with a powerful Quirk." I gasped a bit as Shizuo's eyes widened. "There's Quirks in your family!?" Shizuo asked. Izaya nodded. "My brother had a powerful Quirk. He was groomed to one day be a top hero. Which he eventually became. But only under our father's strict rules. To a point where he became exactly like my father. I...took after my mother. She was a cruel and manipulative women. But she still loved her children. She taught me what compassion was. How to feel emotion. Because while I may come of as psychotic with no real emotion, I'm more sociopathic in nature. Just like she was. I can feel things. But only around certain people. My sisters were born after I was. And they came out more like me and my mother. Sociopathic instead of psychopathic like my brother and my father." Izaya explained. He chuckled a bit, looking directly at me. "And you remember how I mentioned he had a Quirk? He wasn't the only one in the family with one." He said. "My eldest brother was gifted with an intelligence enhancement Quirk. My other brother was gifted with the ability to...well...we'll get to that." He looked away from me. "I...guess its about time you learned about this (Y/N)..." He mumbled. He slowly stood up before helping me up. He wiped his eyes before sighing. "Shizuo if you want you can stick around for this. But it doesn't really concern you." Izaya said. "Doesn't concern me? Flea I've never seen you that p*ssed off about something. And you just called me Shizuo instead of that stupid nickname. I think its a little late for me to back out now." Shizuo grumbled. Izaya nodded. "Have a seat. I'll get some tea out." He mumbled. Continuing to avoid eye contact he shuffled off to the kitchen. "What the hell is up with Izaya!?" Dragonheart shouted, causing me to flinch at the sudden entrance of my Personas. "D*mn...I don't think I've ever seen him that mad before..." Darkheart commented. "(Y/N)...is it possible that he..?" Velvet trailed off. I don't know...too soon to tell. I thought. "His eyes..." Chibi muttered. "Yeah...we all saw it kiddo." Sky said. "They were the same shade as Dark's...the same as...." She trailed off. "Our father's eyes. They were the same shade as our father's." Darkheart continued. "But how the hell-considering what he was yelling about over the phone...!" We grew silent. "Maybe it's all a coincidence." Darkheart offered. "I doubt that...we have become all too familiar with that shade of red." Velvet said. We all grew silent again as Izaya walked back in with tea. Shizuo had already sat down. But I was still standing. Izaya chuckled at me. "Let me guess, the others are tossing back theories aren't they?" He asked. I nodded a bit as Shizuo gave us looks of confusion. "Which reminds me. Aizawa uses his Quirk on us. Our powers disappeared but the others didn't. Any thoughts?" I asked. Izaya hummed, setting the tray of tea on the coffee table. "Ever consider that Persona may not be a Quirk. But is instead a mental condition?" Izaya questioned. "Hm...I guess that would make sense....And since the others are all me, they each just got different Quirks..." I muttered. "Persona is your mental condition. But your Quirk is Mind Play." Izaya said. "You...forget Mental Master..." I pointed out. Izaya shot me a smirk. "Did I? Or do I know more than I let on?" He questioned.
I shot him a glare. "Izaya...do you...know more about my Quirk than I do?" I asked. Izaya waved his hand dismissively, sitting down. "Sit down for a minute will you (Y/N). It's for the best. After all, I'm about to completely warp your world..." He said. I continued glaring at him as I sat down. Shizuo shot me a look. "Hold up. You have a Quirk!?" He shouted. "Quirks." Me and Izaya responded in unison. Izaya then pulled something out of his coat. "(Y/N) has a mental condition. The doctors decided to name it Persona. Which is the new world's version of Dissociative Identity Disorder. Or MPD if you prefer that term. It's what happens when a person born in the generation of Quirks, begins to form MPD. (Y/N) here has believed that its her Quirk. But its her mental disorder. And a few other people have it as well." Izaya explained. My eyes widened. "Studies show that the main mind, the original person, gains the ability to talk to and control these other versions of themselves. And it also makes them resistant to mental Quirks. New things about Persona are still being discovered to this day. Like the fact that Persona users can see their other selves in a mirror. And fun fact, Persona is more likely to be passed down in a family rather than it appearing without reason. Making it especially Quirk like and why for a while it was believed to be a Quirk." Izaya explained. I stared at Izaya in complete shock. As Shizuo looked at me. "Hold on. You have more than one personality, with multiple Quirks-Oh My God everything makes sense now....." He mumbled. "But wait. Wait. If Mental Master isn't a Quirk, then how was I able to backfire Erasure first day of school?" I asked. "Another trait of Persona Users. Because of their mental state they have surprising mental powers. You've read Eragon right?" Izaya asked. I nodded. "Well basically all the mental stuff Eragon can do, you can do as well. You can reach out and prod around someone's mind. You can throw up mental barriers. And you can take hold of someone's Quirk if its mental based. But note. I wouldn't try prodding in my mind. I can tell by the look on your face that you're thinking about it." Izaya said. "And why shouldn't I?" I shot back. He smirked. "(Y/N), you aren't the only Persona user I've met. I knew another one way back when I was fourteen. Heh. You...remind me of her in many ways. She's the one who informed me about the mental condition that is Persona. And she taught me how to shield my mind from her. Even if you wanted to try and prod in my mind you wouldn't be able to." Izaya explained. I glared at him. "Don't tempt me to try. Dragonheart really wants to prove you wrong now." I growled. "D*MN STRAIGHT!!!!" She shouted in the back of my mind. Izaya laughed. "And the notes you were taking when I explained my Quir-er...Persona?" I questioned. "I was noting your personalities and their powers." He said.
"Alright....I think I'm following....but flea, you've been holding that packet of papers the entire conversation. Why?" Shizuo asked. "Yeah. He's got a point." I agreed. Izaya sighed a bit. "Rest assured we will get to these." He said, hitting the papers lightly with the back of his hand. "Okay...follow up question...what does any of this have to do with there being Quirks in your family?" I asked. Izaya shot me another smirk. "(Y/N)...while I was screaming at my brother over the phone, you must have noticed certain things happening right? What were they?" He prompted. "Your eyes turned red and the room temperature began to rise." I said. "Mhm. Anything else you want to mention?" He asked. "Yeah. The shade of red is the same as my father's. The same as my own." I growled, pointing to my left eye that was stuck in that permanent red glare. "(Y/N)...you're a very smart person. What guesses do you have based on those observations?" He prompted further. I was silent as my right eye shifted to red as well. "You have a Quirk...don't you Izaya?" I asked. He smirked. "Yep. My Quirk is....well. I guess its easier to show you." In the blink of an eye Izaya looked...different. He had fox ears...and three fox tails. Me and Shizuo were left dumbfounded. "My Quirk is called Kitsune. It gives me powerful control over all the elements of nature. And I can create illusions. Along with a bit of shapeshifting. My Quirk basically allows me to do everything your average Kitsune from folk lore can do. Plus all the elements at my control." He explained. "....My God....literally everything makes sense now....holy s*it..." Shizuo commented, placing his head in his hands. "My Quirk is extremely overpowered. So my family was shocked when I decided to keep it hidden and not aim to become a hero. My older brother got sent to UA. I however went to schools closer to home. Keeping my Quirk secret. That was around the time I met Shinra. And well...when I was fourteen I met the Persona user I mentioned earlier. I met you, Shizu-chan, a few months later." Izaya explained. "This Persona user....you keep bringing her up..." Shizuo pointed out. Izaya sighed, looking away as his ears and tails disappeared. "When I first met her, I thought I had fallen in love with someone. But...I was wrong. And...well....things happened. Y'know that saying? Life happens? S*it happens? Both of them apply here. I didn't really understand love. So when I met her, I mistook intrigue and curiosity, for a feeling of love. I was....not the smartest kid when it came to emotions. I wasn't the best with people yet. And....well....life happens." Izaya grumbled. He sighed, leaning back in his chair. "Maybe I mistook a crush for actual love. But she was one of the only people in the world that I didn't find annoying. Heh. Some of her Personas remind me a lot of yours (Y/N). Persona users can range from having two to six different personalities. You have five Personas (Y/N). But she only had three of them. And each of them grew on me. But...well...something happened. And they all turned on me. It really is strange how a human mind can change the moment something happens." Izaya said.
I grew silent. Already piecing things together in my mind. "Izaya...you didn't..." I muttered. He shrugged a bit. "Like I said. Life happens. And I wasn't the smartest when I was fourteen. When it came to relationships at least." He said. "We...didn't know until it was too late. She didn't have a Darkheart like you do (Y/N). She basically had a Velvet, a Sky, and a Chibi. But she didn't have a Dragonheart or a Darkheart." Izaya explained. "Flea...are you getting at...what I think you're getting at...?" Shizuo trailed off in a questioning tone. Izaya sighed before nodding. "So...I was a father at fourteen. And while...ahem...while others would assume I'd see that as a dark part of my past...I think otherwise. Because well...when I first saw that child...my own blood...I...I couldn't help it. I loved her. My daughter." Izaya's eyes began to well up with tears. "The Persona user was not cut out to raise a child. She gave me the baby and told me to take care of it. I...didn't know what to do. I didn't want my daughter to be put in the broken foster and adoption system. But...I...I wasn't old enough nor capable enough to raise a child. So...I decided to trust her with other members in the family. I didn't want her to be raised by my parents. Knowing how me and most of my siblings turned out. My sisters were younger than me. And I couldn't get in touch with my eldest brother. The...only choice was to hand her over to my other brother. Who at the time was already a Pro Hero and was forming his own family. I...had not realized how corrupted he was...and how badly he was treating his wife and children." Izaya avoided eye contact while clenching his fists. "That. Handing my daughter over to him. That is what I consider to be the biggest mistake of my life. Part of the deal was that if he took care of her, I could have nothing to do with her. She'd never know. And because of his rank as a pro, nobody questioned it. Heh. I guess when you're high in the ranks nobody questions who you claim to be your child or not. But....I couldn't stand the thought of not having any contact with her. Because no matter what, she was still my daughter. And...I...I still wanted to be a part of her life. So...I tracked down my eldest brother. Doing every little thing I could. And eventually I found him. And I called in a favor. And well...I did get to be a part of her life. But she never knew that I was her father." He explained. He sighed. "My brother took a turn from the worst when he realized that the child was super powerful. He got what he was looking for. A powerful child that he could raise to surpass his enemies. He...decided to do everything in his power in order to create a fake life separate from me. In order to fully convince my daughter, that she was his child. Going as far as to legally change his last name and the names of the rest of his family. The moment he took my daughter, he fabricated an entirely different life for himself. Just to keep her under his thumb...under his rule...." Izaya trailed off.
I took a deep, shaky breath. Knowing exactly where this was going. The other Personas grew silent. "Izaya...I...I think I know where this is going..." I said. He grew silent as well. "So you think you know what I'm getting at....but I take it your not sure. Will it help if I told you that my brother just so happens to have a shadow manipulation Quirk?" I looked away quickly as my eyes widened. "Are you f*cking kidding me...?" Dragonheart mumbled. "No way..." Chibi said. "Heh. How intriguing." Velvet commented. "Well then...I guess this is a thing..." Darkheart said. "Holy mother of ketchup...." Sky muttered. Is this....real..? I thought. Izaya held out the papers to me. "If you're....still uncertain...its right there in black and white." He said. "Blood test?" I questioned. He nodded. I reached out with my hand, hesitating slightly, before taking the papers. I began to read over them. Darkheart...can you- "They're real (Y/N). These are real documents." Darkheart interrupted. Izaya gave me a look. "Are you having Darkheart verify them?" He asked. I nodded slowly. "I assure you (Y/N)...those are real. I...knew this is a conversation I would have eventually with you. Ever since I decided to send you the flip phone and the coat." He said. I smirked a bit. "So...it was you who sent me my coat and my phone eh?" I questioned. He chuckled a bit. "I wanted to irk Shadow a bit. Its why I asked my elder brother to give them to you. And well...the phone...I wanted some contact with you. I guess Shadow never accounted for you having my personality." We both laughed a bit. Shizuo shot us both looks. "Wait...back up...can I get a f*cking explanation here!?" He shouted. I smiled a bit placing the papers down on the coffee table. "Heh. I guess you were right to call me a Mini Flea." I said. I shot Izaya a look. "So...you're my..." I trailed off. Izaya smiled faintly, scratching the back of his neck. "Y-yeah...I'd understand if you'd want nothing more to do with me considering that I left you with him-!" I cut him off by hugging him. Izaya was frozen for a minute before slowly hugging me back. "You've...always been more of a father to me than he was...so...heh...makes sense." I muttered. "WAIT JUST ONE F*CKING MINUTE-YOU-HIM-WAIT-HOLD ON.." Me and Izaya both burst out laughing at Shizuo who looked like his brain just exploded.
Suddenly my phone started going off. I grumbled a curse or two under my breath before standing up and looking at the caller ID. "S*it..." I grumbled. "Lemme guess. Shadow?" Izaya questioned. I nodded slightly before beginning to smile. I hung up on him, not even answering, before turning off my phone. "He isn't important right now. Hell. He was never important to begin with." I said. I put my phone in my pocket before smiling at Izaya. "This is new to me. But...heh. I'm fine with it. I'd much rather be your daughter than his." I said. "You're...very quick to accept this..." Shizuo pointed out. "I've always been quick to adapt. And trust me. When comparing Izaya, to the person that raised me? Pfft. No competition. I take after Izaya a lot more. And trust me Shizu-chan. Izaya has been more of a father to me than the person that actually even f*cking raised me. But...I guess that makes sense now. God this is gonna take some getting used too. Am I ranting? I'm ranting..." I muttered. Izaya just started laughing. With a true happy smile. And that smile was contagious to me. And it may have even been contagious to Shizuo, who tried to hide a small smile appearing on his face as well.
