Chapter 23: Picking A Hero Name
After two days of recovery time school started back up. I woke up early and got breakfast ready. Izaya poked his head in the door. "Got school this morning?" He questioned. "That I do." I responded. "Do you have any idea what you'll be doing today?" He asked. "Not really. But if I had to assume anything I believe it'll have something to do with internships." I responded. "Hm...I see." Izaya said. He sat down at the small bar that was apart of the mini kitchen set. I placed food down in front of him. "What's this about?" He questioned. "If I wake up before you I'll make food for the both of us. That's the deal since you're letting me stay here. Also helps me get other opinions on my cooking since I never really cook for others besides myself. So more or less a win win for me. Besides I need something to do in the mornings besides working on school stuff or just...working in general." I explained. Izaya hummed slightly before shrugging. "Works for me. I have no complaints." He said. I sat down next to him and we both began eating. Izaya finished first and gave me a look. "(Y/N), do you remember what I taught you about why using knives is a better option then things like guns?" He questioned. I finished up my food and took both our plates. "Unfortunately not. But whatever you told me must have stuck because I never go anywhere without my knife." I responded, washing the dishes. "Then lets review since you have some time left. There are multiple reasons why for Information Brokers, it's easier to use knives over guns or fists." Izaya began. "One reason being that guns are more likely to kill people. With guns there are always risks, things like friendly fire, stalling, accidents, and not to mention they're a pain to clean. Guns are complicated tools of death and destruction, also its illegal for civilians to have fire arms in the first place. Another thing is that they're harder to carry without being noticed. In other words, its hard to hide a gun. With knives you can always hide them on your person and other people would be none the wiser. Trust me, I've gotten stabbed once in a crowd and I never saw the dude coming." Izaya explained, avoiding eye contact. "Whoa, whoa, stop for a minute. You of all people have gotten stabbed without seeing the guy coming?" I questioned. "That's not important right now." Izaya said. "Anyway back on topic." He added. "As Information Brokers its a lot harder for us to avoid dodging the law. But not carrying guns is one way we can do that. Also, we want to just scare most people, not actually kill them. Knives are deadly, no doubt about that. But unintended casualties are lower with knives than they are with guns. And its not illegal to carry around a knife. It may be against rules in some places, but illegal? Nah. As long as you can keep it hidden, then you have no reason to worry. Also, with a knife, yeah you can seriously injury someone. And bleeding out is a risk. But with guns, one gun shot is more likely to kill someone because of factors like lead poisoning. Multiple knife wounds are gonna hurt. And once again, risk of bleeding out. But it'll kill a person more slowly. Leaving more openings for them to get help and live. With guns you have to be really careful if you want to avoid killing them. So you can't leave people that cross you with many wounds like that unless you want them dead. Meanwhile with a knife you can get the point across without killing them so they can tell others what occurred. That way the message gets out, don't mess with this person. You follow?" Izaya questioned. I nodded, putting the dishes and silverware away. "Now you may think that, why not avoid all trouble and just use my fists? Well the answer to that is simple. You can't exactly counter another knife or a gun with hands now can you? Meanwhile with a well made knife and great reflexes you can. Also if you seriously hurt your hands or other part of your body because of hand to hand combat you may be put out of commission. Whether its temporary or permanently all depends on the damage." Izaya continued. "While hand to hand is a good skill to have incase you get disarmed it is preferable to have a weapon or two in hand. Which is another good thing about knives, they're small and easy to carry in mass amounts. And there are lots of different types of knives. Able to fit anyone's needs. Kitchen knives, switchblades, butcher knives, etc. etc. Now (Y/N), have I ever told you why I prefer switchblades over any other knives?" He questioned. I shook my head. "I don't believe you have." I said. He tilted his head to the side slightly with a small smirk. "Oh? Is that the case?" He questioned. I noticed Izaya's arm move slightly and before I knew it a switchblade was lodged into the wall right by my head. It was pure silver, and really thin. It didn't look like one of the basic ones that Izaya used most often. I eyed it nervously. HOW THE F*CKING HELL DID HE DO THAT WITHOUT US CATCHING IT!? 'Well this is Izaya Orihara we are dealing with.' Wooooowww! That was so fast! We didn't even see it coming! True. He moved quicker than our eye could see. I guess that's why he's one of the best around. 'Let's face it guys, I think he's a little sharper than we give him credit for.' My eyes were wide slightly as I inched away from the switchblade in the wall. "Switchblades are some of the smallest knives. They are by far the easiest to hide. As well as they're less likely to draw attention verses an actual knife. And there are many types of switchblades. You have basic switchblades, ones made of pure silver, swiss army knives count, and so much more." Izaya explained. His smirk never left his face as he leaned his head on his hand. "And because of their small size, there's less air resistance, and they weigh less, granted most knives don't weigh much regardless. But still, I prefer the smaller knives because they allow me to move quicker, and they're less noticeable if I move quick enough." Izaya continued. "I see." I said. He's got a good combination there. The small size of the knife lets him move quickly, and since he can move quickly not many can see the knife move. Pair that with some of the other advantages of using a knife and the fact that switchblades are easier to hide, it's no wonder he prefers to use them. Izaya stood up and retrieved the knife from the wall. "I've had this switchblade for a long time. Since when I was in high school in fact. Mind you I never hold onto knives for that long normally. But this one does have some importance to it. This is actually the switchblade I was using during my first meeting with Shizu-chan." Izaya said. "Really now?" I questioned. He nodded slightly. "That it is." He confirmed. "Shizu-chan is the only person I've ever cut with this knife actually. Mostly because people get scared when you threaten them with a knife so they'll back off instantly. You can probably attest to that yourself." He explained. I nodded. "Y'know something funny, my mother, the one who gave me this knife in the first place, one time cut my father with this knife. According to her they used to be rivals in high school. And they got into a big fight where she nicked him with this very switchblade. Very first person she ever got with the knife too. Their fights never died down until they graduated. After that they slowly began to get along, mostly cause they were forced to get along by the people around them. You can guess the rest of that story. But I never really understood why mother handed off the knife to me. Until a few years back that is. Then I realized why." Izaya said. I tilted my head to the side. "Weird story. Why are you telling me any of this?" I questioned. He laughed a little. "I have no clue myself. Guess I just felt like telling ya'. Oh. You may want to head out now." He pointed out. I looked at the clock. "S*it. You're right. Later Izaya!" I called, running out the door.
Once I got to school, via teleportation since I didn't feel likes getting crowded by people, I noticed that everyone was already there. Eyes turned to me the moment I popped into the classroom. "Ah (Y/N). Nice of you to join us." Aizawa said. I laughed a little scratching the back of my neck. "Geez. Am I really late? Sorry about that." I apologized. "Geez. Remind me to never start conversations with Izaya in the morning." I mumbled to myself. Aizawa sighed. "Just sit down. Class just started." He said. I nodded and sat down. He returned his gaze to the rest of the class. "Now, as I was about to explain, today we've got Hero Informatics Class." Aizawa began. Everyone tensed up a little. "You'll be coming up with your hero aliases." Aizawa announced. Everyone jumped up in excitement. Aizawa activated his Quirk causing everyone to settle down. "But first...concerning the Pro Draft Picks I mentioned the other day..." Aizawa continued. "It's based on who the Pros think will be ready to join the hero workforce after another two or three years of experience. So you could say it's a way for them to show interest in your futures." He explained. "But there's ample time for their interest to wane before you graduate. And any and all offers can be arbitrarily revoked. It happens quiet often." He continued. "Stupid adults and their whims!" Mineta growled. "So if we're picked now that just means there'll be higher hurdles in the years to come." I commented offhandedly. "Yes. Now here are the complete draft pick numbers." Aizawa said. Numbers appeared on the board labeled Class A Draft Pick Totals. Todoroki was in first. Bakugo in second. Me in third. And so on so forth. "There's typically more of a spread. But our top three stole most of the spotlight." Aizawa commented. "Gah! They're in a whole other league!" Kaminari groaned. "These Pros have no eyes for talent." Aoyama huffed. "Didn't they get second and third backwards?" Kirishima questioned. "Guess they were scared of the girl who literally set the entire arena on fire and had a habit of taunting her opponents." Sero guessed. "WHAT THE HECK ARE THE PROS DOING GETTING INTIMIDATED BY JOKER OF ALL PEOPLE!?" Bakugo shouted. "Or perhaps it was because I wasn't there for the award ceremony or something." I mumbled to myself. "Well done as always Todoroki." Momo said. "It's probably just my father's influence." Shoto responded. Mineta started shaking Izuku. "You're not up there. Told you, you totally scared them." Mineta said. I flicked a finger and set Mineta's hair on fire. He tried to fan out the flames turning to me. "The hell (Y/N)! Quit doing that!" He shouted. I scoffed slightly. "Who said I was doing it? I'm not the only person capable of it." I pointed out, rolling my eyes. "With that settled. Whether you were picked or not, you will all have a chance to work alongside the Pros." Aizawa said shocking the class. "It's true that you all have already experienced more than most, but, seeing the Pros in action and taking part yourselves will still be worthwhile training." He continued. "That's where our hero names come in!" Sato said. "This is really getting fun!" Uraraka added. "They're only temporary for right now. But pick something appropriate." "OR ELSE YOU'LL KNOW TRUE HELL!" Our eyes turned to the door to see the R-rated hero Midnight. "The name you pick now may end up what the world calls you. It's happened to many Pros out there." She explained. "Yes true enough. And Midnight here will be assessing the sensibility of the names you pick. Since I'm not good at it." Aizawa said, picking up his sleeping bag. "What future do you see for yourself? The name you choose will bring you ever closer to cementing a certain image. Because names are capable of reflecting one's true character." Aizawa said. As the boards were passed out along with the markers we were to use I was deep in thought. Something that reflects us...Dark, Velvet, Sky, any ideas? I thought. Hmm...We need something that'll pay tribute to all of us. 'True. Something that describes us to a T. Something that will tell others what we can do. And what we stand for.' 'Take the name All Might for example. Or Eraser Head is another good one.' What about Karma? Since we'll only go after those that truly deserve it! Good idea Chibi, but I feel like we might end up getting confused with Akabane if we aren't careful. Fair enough.... 'Perhaps Alpha? Since we will be the Number 1 Hero some day.' But what if we don't make it to number 1? That'll be a false promise. Let's call ourself Burn! Since we'll toast our enemies! But that focuses more on your abilities Sparky. 'Let's be called Sparky!' Sky no. Just-just no. What if we took the name of our Quirk, 'Persona'? That doesn't sound like a proper name though. Fair enough. 'Sans.' 'As in the font?' WE AREN'T A F*CKING COMIC! 'Oh! Perhaps an inside joke?' What are you on about Velvet? 'Shizaya.' GOD NO! I'm all about an inside joke name. Iza-chan? AM I THE ONLY ONE BEING SERIOUS HERE!? Okay, okay, guys. Focus. I thought. As we continued arguing about it and tossing around ideas many of the others went ahead and presented their names. "This went smoother than expected. All that's left is Bakugo's revision...Iida, Midoriya, and (Y/N)'s names." Midnight said. I looked around suddenly. "Eh? Did someone call my name?" I questioned. Shoto facepalmed a little. "(Y/N) almost everyone's done." He said. I laughed a little. "O-oh. Heheheh. Guess I got lost in thought...God this is hard." I mumbled, faceplanting my desk. Shoto chuckled a little. I looked up and he gave me a small smile. "Don't stress it. I'm pretty sure you can come up with something more creative than I did at least." He said. "What did you do?" I questioned. "I just went with my first name." He admitted, scratching the back of his neck with a small blush. I smiled a little. "At least you could decide on something. Everyone is tossing around ideas like crazy and I can barely keep up with it all." I said. "But I guess if I can't think of anything I'll default to my name as well." I mumbled, turning back to the white board on my desk. "You're really struggling that much with it?" Shoto questioned, tilting his head to the side. I sighed. "Yeah. I just can't think of anything that'll fit all of us as well as tell what we can do." I admitted. Shoto hummed to himself. "Well with those two things in mind I think I have an idea." He said. "Really?" I questioned, giving him a look. "Well think for a minute. All of you are part of one whole. You can adapt to any situation and you're truly a game changer. (Y/N), you're a wild card. There's only one name that'll pay tribute to that nature." He said. That's when it hit me. "Sho you are a f*cking genius!" I said happily. "Glad to be of help." He said with a smile. My turn came and I stepped up the front of the room. "Alright Class Rep. What did you choose?" Midnight questioned. "Well, with a few hints from a close friend of mine. And really thinking about it, only one name could truly do me and the others justice." I explained. "Others?" Kirishima questioned. I smiled. "That'll be explained later. But...thanks to said close friend, I remembered something important." I said, shooting a smile at Shoto. "I can adapt to anything. And my decisions can be game changing for everyone around me. I have many personas. I'm a Wild Card. So only one name fits." I explained. I showed the board to the class. "The Wild Card Hero: Joker." I introduced.
Midnight nodded. "Ah, and so life will change. I can sense quite the rebellious spirit with that name. But do tell, isn't that the nickname young Bakugo calls you?" Midnight questioned. I nodded. "It is. But his reasons for calling me that, is another reason why I choose it." I said. I looked Kacchan in the eye and smirked. "In his words, I'm an unpredictable and weird wild card. Isn't that right Kacchan?" I questioned. He scoffed slightly, avoiding eye contact with me. "Whatever. But yeah. It suits someone like you, Joker." He admitted. "Was that a compliment?" Tsu questioned. "NO IT WASN'T! IT WAS A STATEMENT D*MNIT!" Bakugo shouted. "Whatever you say Kacchan." I said, rolling my eyes. I shot a small wink at Shoto and he nodded back. After that the last few names were picked Aizawa was woken up. "Your internships start in a week. For this all important decision, I'll be handing out personalized lists to those who were drafted. You may choose from among those who scouted you. For those who were not drafted, the list I just passed out contains forty agencies from all over the country willing to accept inters. You will choose one from that list." Aizawa explained. I stared down at the packet of papers on my desk tuning out the rest of the conversation. Two names on the front page caught my attention. Endeavor Hero Agency and Shadow Hero Agency. I thought. My face showed no emotion as I flicked through the papers, looking at the names of heroes and agencies. "What are you aiming for (Y/N)?" Shoto asked, looking over at me. I hummed a little bit, already knowing that I was going to be spending my internships in Ikebukro. "I've already got an idea of where I'm going to go. What about you?" I questioned, looking back at him. He looked back down at his papers. "I...don't know. I need to learn how to control my flames. And the only one that'll be able to help me with that is my father. But still...." He trailed off. I gave him a look of sympathy. "I feel ya' man. But I found somewhere far away from my dad's hero agency. I plan on self teaching myself how to use Shadows. Maybe with a little guidance from the guy who I'm gonna see." I explained. He shot me a look. "Who are you going to train under?" He asked. I winked at him with a smirk. "That's a secret." I said. Shoto groaned. "C'mon (Y/N) help me out here." He said. "Nope. This is something you've got to work through yourself. I could teach you how to use your fire, but I'm not a Pro Hero." I joked with a smile. "Can you teach me how in two days so I don't have to go to my father's agency?" Shoto asked. I laughed. "Sorry man. No go. I've got lots to do these next few days." I said. He sighed and faceplanted his desk. "God this week is gonna be hell." He mumbled. My flip phone started buzzing in my pocket. "Sorry Sho. Got to take this." I said, reaching inside my pocket to grab my flip phone, only to be met with the cold feeling of something silver in my pocket. My eyes widened slightly. Is that...Izaya's switchblade? I thought. I ignored it for now and pulled out my phone stepping into the hallway. "Izaya you shouldn't be calling me during school hours. Also did you sneak your switchblade into my pocket?" I questioned. "Yeah, yeah. I'm just calling to check in since I hacked the system and found out today you would be figuring out internships. Also yes. I did put the switchblade in your pocket this morning. Speaking of can you hang on to it for me?" He questioned. I raised an eyebrow. "Sure I guess. But why are you asking about internships?" I prompted. "Page four of your packet. There should be a name of a hero agency that you're unfamiliar with. I may or may not of planned ahead a little." Izaya explained. "You set up a fake agency name?" I questioned. "Yep. It was really no problem. They just assumed it was a new, unpopular agency." He commented. I smirked. "You sneaky b*stered." I said. "I've been called worse." He said with a hint of arrogance in his voice. "Alright, thanks for the insight." I said. "Anytime. Later." "Later." I hung up the phone and walked back inside the classroom. I picked up my packet and flipped to page four. I scanned the paper and quickly found the fake name. I picked up all my stuff and with the packet and a pencil in hand I walked out of the room.
~A Week Later~
Everyone had gathered at the train station with their hero costumes and where saying their goodbyes. I was walking to the train for Shinjuku when I felt a hand grab my wrist. I looked at saw Deku. I stopped and turned to him. "Yeah, what is it Izuku?" I questioned. "You aren't saying goodbye to anyone?" He asked. "Oh. Sorry. Guess I'm a little focused right now." I admitted. "So...you're heading to Shinjuku?" He questioned. I smiled a little. "Yeah. I am." I said. "I don't remember there being any Hero Agencies over there that have ever caught your interest before." He said. "Let's just say...I'm going to train under a close family friend." I said. "Oh." Izuku let go of my wrist. "Stay in touch." He said with a smile. "I will." I said, ruffling his hair. I saw Iida heading off to his train. We would be going in the same direction. "Later Izuku." I said. He waved me off as I ran to my train. I stopped next to Iida as he gave me a look. "Yes (Y/N)?" He said. "Your eyes are clouded by hatred." I mumbled. He gave me a look of confusion. "Iida. Don't lose sight of what a hero is. I can sense rage in your soul. So please. Remember that the true meaning of being a hero is saving someone. For nothing else but to save them." I said. A look of guilt flashed in his eyes but he shook his head giving me a somewhat forced smile. "I won't forget." He promised before walking off to his train. My eyes followed him til he disappeared. I sighed. "Might as well teleport there." I said. I snapped my fingers teleporting into Izaya's apartment. "Welcome back." Namie greeted. "Where's the raven headed flea that we know and tolerate?" I questioned. "He forgot today you were beginning internships so he ran off to Ikebukro. If you hurry you might catch him at the train station." Namie said. I smiled. "Thanks Namie!" I said running out the door, leaving my hero costume but putting on my hoodie. Once I reached the train station I quickly spotted Izaya's coat and ran up next to him. "Is it really that easy to forget my internship?" I questioned. He smirked at me. "Sorry about that. But I do have a job to do in Ikebukro today. Why don't you go and fight Shizu-chan since you've recovered from a week ago?" Izaya questioned. "Eh, sounds good to me. Not like I have anything better to do." I responded with a shrug. With that we got on the train and went to Ikebukro. God this week is gonna be crazy.
