RECAP

HEROBRINE'S POV

The leader's ax blade rested against my throat, I could feel no tremble in his hand, it was strong, steady. I couldn't help the flinch my body gave as I felt the larger ax from the man holding my hair come to rest across my shoulder blades. If I so much as moved even a little, I would be cut to pieces. In shock and amazement, I stared up at them, unable to keep my expression neutral any longer.

          I...had been defeated...

Escaping Fate

AVA WOODS' POV

For what seemed like forever, I had hidden, breathless, behind a huge chunk of fallen stone. Crouching in the weeds at its base, a gloved hand pressed against the cold, rough surface, I strained my ears to picture what was going on, listening to the sounds of battle. I winced every time Herobrine cried out, but what I hated most was this sudden silence.

There were sounds of panting, the slight shuffle of boots on dirt and grass, but the silence was filled with tension. What was going on?? Was...he dead? Had they killed him? Had Herobrine won...? Were they simply...waiting for the other to make a move? Unable to stand it any longer, I took a breath, shaking hands reaching up over the rim of the stone, peering over.

The sight I came upon struck me with numbing shock. Herobrine was on his knees, weaponless, head forced back by a hand fisted in his hair. A...strangely familiar man held an ax against Herobrine's throat, and a redheaded woman held two scimitars poised over his heart. An archer had an arrow trained on him, and a young swordsman stood tense behind the rest, ready to slip in and kill should Herobrine resist.

It was utterly still, as though the scene before me was a mere painting of a dramatic face-off. However, the sounds of labored breathing from Herobrine, and the smell of his blood made it far too real. I swallowed, looking again to the man with the axes. A red scarf was about his neck, and anger was clear on his features...why did I feel like I knew him? The strange tune I used to hum to myself when I had nightmares suddenly came to me. Was...he connected with the song?

Suddenly, my hand slipped on the stone supporting me, and I gasped softly, scrabbling to catch myself. The noise alerted the archer, and he spun towards me, growling lowly, "Don't move."

I froze obediently at the sight of that sharp arrowhead aimed directly for my face, seconds away from being released and killing me where I stood. Flicking my gaze to Herobrine again, my heart sank. What could I do? These people looked so dangerous, so deadly, so bent on their goal to kill him...

How would I even begin to try and save his life again...

DAMON RIVERS' POV

Every inch of my body was tense to the point of pain. Here, at last...after so many years of hunting, of living in secrecy...the demon was at our mercy.

Only...it was not what I expected at all...

He was down, helpless, forced to his knees. His uneven breaths and the way his body trembled screamed of his exhaustion, of his fear. The expression on his face...was one of not only fright...it was also of pain. It was an expression I hadn't even thought him capable of making.

He'd been wounded already; the fight had not lasted long. I allowed my eyes to break contact with his blank orbs, travel down his once-strong body. His chest was heaving, torso covered in strips of material stained with blood. He couldn't even wear a shirt, and deep red stained his side where Roarn had stuck him, right where we had hoped, and it had broken open the wound.

At our mercy...helpless...and yet I could not give the deathblow...

...at least not until I had a few answers...but if he would not give them, I would silence my longing for a reason for my family's death...

...and I would do what had to be done to save the world.

I took a breath, preparing the questions in my mind.

HEROBRINE'S POV

My body betrayed me as it began to tremble from my pain and weariness. No...no it could not end here! I still had a chance...the Barrier was still there...if I could just have a but a moment to take the power, I could survive, I could win this. I would only take it down for a few seconds, a few precious seconds, and I could turn the tide of this battle in my favor—

          "Why!?"

The leader suddenly fired a question at me with such explosive anger, I barely kept myself from flinching again. My eyes flicked to his, and I saw raw pain in his uncovered eye. However, as I watched, he raised his other hand, still gripping an ax, and ripped the cloth from his face. The dull red material hid a huge burn scar that enveloped half his face, fading his right eye to a milky color, rendering it undoubtedly useless. His expression was twisted in cold fury as he stared me down, and I felt within myself the telltale signs of apprehension, of fear. Never before had a human caused me fear...

...then again, never had a human brought me as low as these had.

"Why Herobrine...why did you murder my family, all of our families!? You have burned our towns, slaughtered our loved ones, all without reason! Why!?"

His voice was rough and raspy, filled with bitterness and hate. I could tell the man loathed saying my name, just from the way he sneered after he uttered the forbidden word. I knew I had to stall for time, reaching out mentally for the power so close at hand that would deliver me from this hopeless situation, still fighting those whispers.

Working up my courage, and taking a breath, feeling the blades hovering over my vitals, eager for my blood, I spoke, "Y-you...would not understand...mortal."

Two of the humans flinched at the sound of my voice, which I had kept quiet and soft, as I could not use more strength than necessary to communicate with them. It still appeared to echo, however, and that could not be helped.

The leader's eyes narrowed, and then the small scrape of a hand on stone caught my attention, coupled with a slight gasp off to my right. I could not look over without risking my throat being sliced open, but I knew what it was, and I clenched my teeth. No, she had to remain hidden!

The leader jerked his other ax a little, and the bow creaked again, turning from me. I heard another quiet gasp from Ava, and a male voice growling at her to be still. However, my attention was once again torn from her as the blade on my throat pressed nearer, making warm blood well up from a small cut.

Growling, the human drew closer, "All I understand is that this needless death must stop, it must end...and to ensure that it does..."

His blade pressed closer, making me want to draw my throat away from it, but the blade at my back prevented me. No, I was so close, just a few more seconds...the Barrier was thinning, beginning to disintegrate, the power flowing back into the room, ready to bond with my body—

"...we must cut off the problem at its source."

His angered voice dropped to a near whisper, anger beginning to make his words tremble, "Do you understand why you must die, Herobrine."

I shifted on my knees, feeling the blades above my heart begin to press into my skin. Speaking softly again, I answered, "I...u-understand why y-you wish me dead, mortal..."

I felt threads of power begin to race for my form, and I prepared my mind to draw it in, accept it.

"...but I w-will not die today..."

I saw his eyes narrow again, but before he could react, I felt energy pour into me like a river, flooding my senses and making my eyes flash with the light of a thousand stars. A pulse of energy threw my attackers away, and I felt my knees leave the ground, the power drawing me into the air, surrounding me in a blinding cloak of light as I drew it in, feeling it bond with me, heal wounds in seconds, racing through me, unable to be contained.

The strain it put on my mind caused me to shout, the energy clashing with the whispers that plagued me. I squeezed my eyes shut, light causing my head to throb, struggling to maintain the grip on my powers to keep it from exploding outwards, tearing apart this very building and bringing it down on top of myself...and Ava.

Even as energy still swirled violently about within me, I forced my eyes open, turning them down onto the mortals who had assaulted me. They stared, openmouthed at my form, backing away, bracing their weapons for an attack. One was shouting at the others, but it was drowned out by the roar of energy in my mind, overwhelming all sound, even the whispers. Light pulsated like lightning from my heart, and I found that I was hovering several blocks above the ground, the energy within me pulling me up into the air.

I could see wind whipping the vines and grass into a frenzy about me, but I hardly cared. It almost hurt as the power drove itself into my body and mind...but it would be necessary for a few precious minutes. I spotted Ava backing away as well, limping and stumbling over her own feet. I had to get her away from here...the human would only be crushed in the coming fight—

Warning bells suddenly went off in my head as my energy settled within my body, again becoming one with me. Something was wrong, something...the Barrier...it had been blocking something...

My eyes widened, and I found myself next to Ava in the blink of an eye. I hadn't even realized I had teleported, so little energy was used up.

Grabbing onto her slim frame, my hand on her shoulders, I ignored her startled yelp, growling fiercely, "We must leave this place!!"

I felt foreign energy suddenly lock into the room, pouring into it...an energy I recognized without knowing how.

It was the alert of teleportation about to commence.

I had no time to react. Golden light suddenly shot into the room, and the earth rumbled, drowning out the cries of the humans. I lurched forwards, wrapping my arms around Ava as the ground shook beneath our feet, as chunks of stone suddenly began to crumble and slam into the earth all around us. My mind searched desperately for a landing place, farther away than I had ever teleported before as Ava buried her face in my shoulder.

Then a presence...one so achingly familiar and yet so foreign...one that caused fear to wash over me in waves for reasons I knew not...appeared behind me. Locking onto a spot and planning to erase my path, I whipped my head around to see the threat as I felt energy begin to tug my form away.

And my eyes locked with another man's. He was tall, his head shaven, and a black beard framed his mouth. Dark eyes filled with...concern...bored into my own. His form radiated power, it far outlasted my own, and caused dread and crushing guilt to fill my mind, my very soul.

          He...was so familiar...

A searing headache seemed to split my head in two, and then all sight vanished from me as I swept Ava and myself away from the fortress, landing in a cool, dark cave.

I immediately twisted, feeling my legs give out, forcing myself to land on my back so as not to crush Ava. She yelped, but I barely heard it as a static noise filled my ears, forcing my eyes shut. Ava's panicked voice, sounding as though coming from behind a door, reached me only moments before I blacked out.

          And then...the visions began.

DAMON RIVERS' POV

I should have seen this coming; I should have known...

But now it was too late.

As though in slow motion, I saw the demon rising into the air, fluctuating, wild energy wrapping about him, streaming into his chest from the very air surrounding him. His eyes flashed like the sun, and he roared, back arching as the power flooded his body. Where had he even gotten that extra energy?!

My followers were backing away, weapons held uselessly against his hovering form. Wind whipped around the room, blowing up dust and small stones No, he was far too powerful now... We were too late...I should have struck him down when he first landed on his knees...

His gaze landed on us, and I prepared myself to call out a retreat formation. However, he suddenly froze, eyes drifting from us, seemingly focusing on something...beyond this room.

Suddenly, he vanished, reappearing next to a...girl I had not seen before. She did not flinch from him, and he grabbed her by the shoulders, opening his mouth to shout something.

And then the very earth trembled.

I whirled to my followers, roaring at them, "Flee! We must go, He'll bring the entire building down on top of us—!"

A deafening roar of hundreds of tons of crumbling stone walls and old wood drowned my words out. Stones large as horses fell among us, slamming into the dirt and kicking up dust, blinding us. No, no!! Notch had blessed us; this was his will!!

I lunged for the nearest person, Jasher, but something hard hit the back of my head, fell onto my legs, slamming me to the ground, knocking the breath from me. Blackness descended on me as choking dust filled my lungs...

Stones were still falling when my eyes rolled back, and I passed out.
