Prologue
Drip. Drip. Drip.
"Hello?" The girl called, looking around the vast space. Pitch black surrounded her, except for a mysterious light that lingered just out of her reach. "What's going in?" She tried again, rubbing her upper arms. Regretfully, all she had on was a thin blue sweater and jeans. To her surprise, she could walk forward but when she did, the light moved just enough to remain out of reach.
Drip. Drip. Drip.
"Where is that coming from?" She muttered, rubbing her arms more vigorously. The insistent dripping noise was beginning to get on her nerves, with nothing to distract from it. She continued on, the landscape never changing. Until:
"What?" She said, her mostly blank expression crumbling into fear. A wave of black water swept in, soaking her shoes. The girl blinked quickly, focusing once again on her surroundings (when did she space out?). There was a thin layer of water over the floor, from where, she didn't know. While she had been bored or annoyed so far, for the first time, a sliver of fear crept down her spine.
"What's going on?" She whimpered. The water level kept rising, going over her ankle. Fear beginning to overwhelm her, she stepped back. Then again, and again. Before she knew it, she was running back the way she came, the water only getting higher.
It rose to above her knee, slowing her down. Nevertheless, she forged onward, desperately trying to escape. "Help!" She cried, knowing no one would - could- help, but trying anyways.
But it kept rising, to her waist, to her chest, to her shoulders.
"Aaa-blrg." Her sorrowful cries turned into drowned pleas for help, but no mysterious savior disappeared.
As she sunk, a pale face hovered over the water, gazing down sadly at the child. It was distorted by the water, and did nothing to help.
And so that poor girl was left to wonder if anyone cared enough to help her at all.
