Chapter 11: An eerie atmosphere
Jimin let out a huff of warm breath as he made it up the first set of stairs. There was a platform in between the first set and the second set of the stairs that Jimin took a moment to look around and feel the atmosphere thicken. Only realizing it was just his fear that was growing within him.
Jimin started walking up the steps of the second stair set, it was pure silence now and all he could hear now was the thumps of his heart beating with anxiety roaring in his mind. Jimin finally reached the top of the steps, recalling the time he witnessed the figure standing before him. Turning away after and starting to whistle as he walked down the hall. Jimin could still hear the echoes in his head and only keep a blank face while he shined the light down the spine-chilling hall.
There already seemed to be a few lights down the hall and what was expected was nothing but a mess. Graffiti, moss growing along the halls and the hall way alone would be flooded with red light, however, it looked like a normal hall. The only red that filled Jimin's eyes was the exit sign down the hall. Jimin looked around flashed his light towards a door to see the room number. C-16 was the number on the door and all Jimin did was not even bother to walk inside. This wasn't the door above his.
Jimin walked down the silent hall and all he can hear is his own footsteps on the cold floor. He constantly checked behind himself countless times and made sure he kept his eyes focused at the task at hand. He needed to find out who this mysterious man was. Jimin suddenly remembered which room in this floor that had a key absent in the landlord's office. This made Jimin look up ahead at the exit sign, blinking red as if it was going to give in any moment. Let alone, the lights were dimmed and hanged on the walls which made Jimin worry of those turning off too.
Jimin walked past three rooms now, so far there was another set of fifteen rooms here and all he did was gaze down the halls. Trying his best to keep his breathing steady and his heart from jumping out of his chest due to all the fear he held built up inside. Jimin hesitated to stop and call out for the man, fearing he might come from the rooms behind Jimin and end up bagging the boy's head and dragging him into the room. Jimin quickly disposed of the thought while his mouth grew parched and it was difficult to sweat in fear since the hall was very cold like the air coming from the vents were on and the windows leading to the outside was drawn open. Welcoming the cold air. Just simple shirt layers didn't seem good enough for this temperature now.
Jimin started to hear the wind howling from a window that was boarded up and covered with a big dark blue curtain. From the holes of the decaying wood, the wind rushed into the abandoned floor. "Why would they still keep this floor abandoned? They should at least send a few people up here to clean the rooms, fix the lights and then there will be more room for others to stay in. Of course, it is available to others... They just don't want to live in a place like this!" Jimin thought to keep him distracted from the silent hall.
"It's peaceful yet scary in here... Almost too peaceful..." Jimin thought and was expecting someone to creep up from behind him and snatch his arm back and lead him down to the second floor where it's safe... Yet, nothing really happened. Jimin clenched his hands around the recorder and the flashlight as his mind filled with regrets. "Ugh... Why couldn't I have left this alone? I'm going to suffer now.. Or maybe... It's never too late to turn around!" Jimin added, in his mind he sounded louder but as soon as he opened his mouth to speak, only a small and short peep was heard. That's how terrified Jimin was.
Not a moment too soon, Jimin suddenly felt goosebumps along his arms as he quickly turned around to see no one again. "I-I'm losing my mind up here!" Jimin said in his head. He would rather say it out loud to hear at least something other than cold and dead silence... But that wasn't an option. It was like being up on the floor blocked out Jimin's voice due to the terrifying atmosphere that was displayed. Jimin kept walking until he reached the room down the hall where his room would be downstairs.
Jimin's apartment room was right by the stair case and Jimin could have used the one near his door so he can easily reach the third floor without walking down the whole hallway on the other side. But Jimin figured if he was going to venture around the third floor, might as well use the back stairs and walk his way to his side of the apartment above. Jimin walked up to the door of the vacant apartment he would hear footsteps from. This wasn't the room that had one of the keys missing, rather, it was the one accross it... Yet Jimin only turned his head away from the room above his apartment room and backed away, wanting to at least check in with the lonely neighbor that lived in the room across first.
Jimin turned away from the room and faced the one that was known as a person living in it. Jimin knocked on the door hesitantly. His heart started to pound loudly as he still awaited an answer. Yet no one answered the first time. Jimin knocked again and kept looking over his shoulder behind him, scared of finding the man who would serenade him to sleep, come from the door behind him. There was many rooms this man had access to and most of them seemed unlocked as if someone picked the lock until the doors were forced open. But not the room that was registered. That one was locked.
Just having a big hall to one person seemed geeedy, yet no one else preferred to live up there. So who was to blame for that? Rumors that spread like a wildfire in the forest seemed to cause distruction and isolation to this floor. Resulting in one source of life just beyond the door in front of Park Jimin.
Jimin knocked again, but no answer! He was close to giving up but then, his feet began to take him to the door behind him that was just above his apartment room. Jimin looked at the door, eyes blowing wide and the constant gulps that left his mouth dry as he decided to finally try to open the door. Jimin placed his warm hand over the cold handle and looked down at it. Growing petrified. What if he couldn't get this one open? Would his short adventure to find the man who gave him sweet dreams and long rests, all be a waste of time while he should be working off the entries and finalizing the last celebrity he longs to interview?
Jimin didn't mind that now... It was finally time to see who this man was. Ugly or not, Jimin still believed he was still human. Or exactly sounded like one! Jimin turned the cold knob and pushed open the door to see nothing but darkness. Jimin tried to switch on the light, but just like any other abandoned room, no light worked for this one. Jimin walked in, flashing his light around to see there was nothing but vacant rooms. The living room was vacant, the halls and the balcony up ahead was empty too. Yet, it seemed as if someone left it unlocked.
The boy walked into a room where a vent was right by the wall, pointing from the bottom. Jimin shined his light on it and watched from the doorway of the room. "So this is the vent.... The vent he sings to me through." Jimin thought. Right when he began to smile through the fear, he suddenly felt watched.
Jimin stepped forward to the vent again, not picking up a presence behind him. Jimin kept walking forward into the room and with every step, a figure behind him followed. Fading in it's steps in sync with Jimin's until.... BAM! the door flew shut and this alone made Jimin stop and hold his flashlight and recorder tightly in fear. It was like he was frozen, couldn't move a muscle or even let out a soft cry for help.
But as soon as Jimin finally regained control over his body, he quickly turned around and ran into the arms of...someone. Jimin stopped again as fear caught up to him. He dropped his recorder and only source of light, making the flashlight hit the ground and switch off the light as darkness filled the room and Jimin's recorder fell onto the ground as well. Jimin couldn't see a thing and figured he was in the arms of a man due to the body structure he felt against his own body in contact.
Jimin was overwhelmed with fear and suddenly fainted into the unknown's arms, making the anonymous man quickly hug Jimin and hold him up. The taller man wore all black, black from the silk hair on his head, to the shoes he wore. Yet his face, was pale in the dark. It seemed as if this was the man all along, he didn't seem dangerous... Just caring while he held Jimin up in his arms, refusing to put Jimin down on the cold ground of the silent and dark room the two were in.
