Chapter Twelve: Why?!

“Why? Why did I not follow them when they made that offer?” Brightnose cried to the skies. “Now I can’t find them, and they probably hate me now!” She walked over to an empty, tipped-over trashcan and huddled up inside, mewing quietly and sadly to herself.

Meanwhile, at Colorfur’s and Darktail’s place, the two were discussing the plan to have Brightnose come with them. “But she probably wandered off, and the rain washed away her scent!” Colorfur cried, lashing her tail in worry and frustration. “Maybe our humans can help us…” Darktail meowed softly. “But they can’t understand us!” Colorfur said. “We can’t write, either.” “I thought you said that the librarian taught you to read? Doesn’t that mean you can write too?” asked Darktail, “I mean, it can't be that hard after seeing all those… um, what do you call them?” “Letters?” “Yeah, letters. I’m sure you will be able to write if you try! Here’s some paper and a pen. Try as hard as you can!” She handed Colorfur a ballpoint pen and an old piece of math homework. Colorfur looked at it uneasily and picked up the pen in her mouth. “What should I write?” she asked Darktail. “How about, ‘Our friend Brightnose is trapped outside and lost. Please help.’ How about that?” “Sound’s good.” Colorfur started to write. Eventually, the note spelled out:

Owr frend Britenose iz traped owtside annd losst. Pleeze halp.

Colorfur sat back on her haunches and said “Do you think they will understand it? I have never done this before and I haven’t read books in forever. I also think I spelled some things wrong.” Darktail gave her a look of disgust. “You are such a perfectionist!” Darktail meowed. “You really need to stop acting like Brightnose!!!!” Colorfur narrowed her eyes, and said “I am nothing like Brightnose. I am not a perfectionist, and I am really upset at her. I offered her a home, warmth, food, and she didn't want it. If it was me, I would have come immediately. That is not perfect. You have no right to say that I am like her. I am NOT like her. Understand?” Darktail nodded, the fur on her back rising in fear of Colorfur’s voice. The last time her voice took on that tone was right before she tore a dog to bits out of anger from the loss of her squeaky toy.  “Well, sorry.” was Darktail’s only reply.

“Mew! Meow!” meowed Brightnose anxiously, having been woken from her slumber by loud footsteps. Or maybe they were pawsteps! “Who is there?” she mewed in fear. Slowly, a dark shape emerged from the shadows. As the shape stepped out, it revealed itself to be a huge dog, bigger than Sweetie Pie, with his sharp, glistening teeth bared and his body positioned in his attack stance. As Brightnose slowly raised her eyes, he growled with a voice like thunder, “Are you the cat who escaped that measly dog Stupid Pie? Tell me!” Brightnose cowered in fear and said, “If you mean Sweetie Pie, then yes, yes I am. But what does that matter to you? After all, you aren’t him.” The dog growled “I am one of the dogs who tried to chase you. I was given this,” -he gestured to the long gash in his side- “because I talked against that pet. My pack kicked me out. I came to find you to-” “Avenge your place in the pack. I get it. You’re going to kill me to prove yourself.” She said, the fur rising of of her in fear and anger. “Well, I’d like to see you try!” she hissed, jumping back when the dog leaned down towards her. The dog chuckled. “I am not here to kill you.” he said. “To bring me back alive and have me torn to shreds, then.” mewed Brightnose. “No. I am here to befriend you.” “WHAT!?” yowled a shocked kitty. “But, but, you’re a dog, and I’m a cat. We can’t be friends!” “And where is the rulebook telling us the rules of the animals? There is none! We can still be friends! Right?” Brightnose glanced worriedly up at the dog’s sharp teeth, still not trusting him. He dropped into a playful position, with his rear-end in the air and his front paws on the ground. “Please?” he asked, his face taking on a foolish and happy grin when she slowly nodded. “Yes! I won’t let you down, I promise! I will be your friend and your guardian. I will help you, I promise!” he said again. Brightnose sternly looked up at him and said, “Yes, but we have to set some rules.”
