Chapter Nine: Close Call

Through the battlefield echoed Sweetie Pie’s orders of “Get them all! Kill every single cat! Doesn’t matter which ones you kill, just kill them!” The cats heard this and immediately jumped up and ran away. “After them!” barked the biggest stray dog. “No! Stay here!” cried Sweetie Pie, making the other dogs stop in their tracks. “They’ve already got a headstart! We’ll never catch them!!!” The dogs glowered at him and said “Now we’ll never catch them! You made us hesitate!!!! You do that again and you will be the enemy, not the cats!” Now it was Sweetie Pie’s turn to gulp. He looked at the angry dogs facing him, and backed up, and the other dogs took as a signal to appoint a new leader, for Sweetie Pie had backed down. Quickly the biggest dog stepped up and Sweetie Pie nodded in approval of the new leader.  That was that, Sweetie Pie was no longer in charge. “Phew!” Darktail exclaimed. (The cats were watching from the shadows) “ I’m glad he’s no longer in charge, because that was a close call, for sure!” “You’re right.” admitted Colorfur. “I never want to do that again. I’m just glad Brightnose came up with something useful.” Brightnose blushed, her silver nose turning a deep silver, showing she was very pleased and happy. “Wait a min-, your leg! You ran on it today! It’s healed!” meowed Colorfur, staring at it. “Broken bones should never heal that fast!” Brightnose looked at her. “Future, advanced, REMEMBER?” “Oh, yeah, right…. sorry.” mewed the embarrassed Colorfur. “But still, is that… what type of technology is it?” “When I was a kitten, my human, Dylan, inserted a healing chip into my brain.” replied Brightnose. Then, seeing her two confused friends, she explained it further. “It makes the part of my brain that registers pain go into overtime and makes the wound seem more severe. Then the brain tries to heal it faster, because the wound is ‘really bad’. It can be excruciatingly painful sometimes, but it’s worth it. Do you understand now?” Colorfur nodded, still a little embarrassed that she hadn’t thought of that. “So, what are we doing now?” Colorfur mewed, trying to hide her embarrassment. “We try to get me home, numbskull!” snapped Brightnose. “I know, but how are we doing that?” questioned Colorfur, with a hint of fear at her friend’s angry tone. “We’ll just have to wait it out until Dylan sends the time machine to find me. He probably already did, and it’s probably looking for me both in history and the future.” meowed Brightnose impatiently, suddenly feeling guilty that she had snapped at her friends. She lowered her head and her tail stopped twitching. She stopped moving altogether and looked like a sad statue of a cat. In her mind she could see visions of a dejected Darktail and a miserable Colorfur walking slowly away from her as she snapped insults toward them. “Brightnose. Brightnose!!!! Are you alright?!” Colorfur’s panicked voice snapped her out of her daymare. When she sat up, Colorfur was looking horrified. “You were standing as still as a statue. You weren’t moving or breathing or anything! We thought you were dead! Darktail actually went to start digging a grave!” Slowly Brightnose stood up, her head spinning like a top, and as soon as she had stood up, she collapsed as the ground shook. “Earthquake!” cried Colorfur. “Darktail! Come here! Hurry!” Darktail mewed, jumped out of the deep hole she was digging, and ran to Colorfur’s side, shaking, her fur puffed up. Her face was contorted in fear. “What’s an earthquake?” asked Brightnose, bouncing up and down while the ground jerked under her. “I-i-i-i-’l-l-l-l-l t-t-t-t-t-e-e-el-l-l-l-l y-y-y-y-o-o-o-u-u-u-u-u l-l-l-la-a-a-at-t-t-te-e-e-er-r-r-r!” meowed Colorfur, her voice bouncing along with the ground. Brightnose could barely hear her. Her brain was spinning in her head, making a loud thump! thump! as she bounced. Then, as fast as the jerking and jumping had started, it stopped. Everything was quiet. Too quiet.
