Chapter Six

Luke sat beside Courtney in the pew, staring straight ahead, numb. It didn't seem possible that only five days ago, he had held his daughter in his arms as she bled out. He squeezed his eyes shut. Every single night, he'd woken up, shaking and crying as it had happened over and over in his dreams. He couldn't even close his eyes without seeing the pained expression on her face. He slowly stood, going up to the front, and starting to speak.

"Elizabeth Grace was.....to say it simply, she was a dreamer. She was terrified the first day my wife and I found her, but she still held onto her dreams." He choked down a lump in his throat.
"She always had a beautiful smile on her face, and when she played with her brothers.....the look on her face was just pure joy. And despite everything she went though.....despite all of that, she never asked God the question 'Why me?'. She never once asked that while she was part of our family. Elizabeth had a beautiful voice, and my brother Joel....He and I had planned to have her sing with us soon. Her two favorite songs that we wrote were Shoulders and To The Dreamers, and she said that because she said they described her life. She had learned to trust God, and she had big dreams." He blinked back tears, looking down at the sheet of paper in front of him. Her beautiful smile beamed up at him from the picture on it.

"My sister-in-law, Moriah, in her first album had a song called Bloom. To me, that song describes her perfectly. She was turning into something amazing. She....She wrote a letter to us a few months back, and she also put the lyrics from Through Your Eyes, by Britt Nicole. She said that we had showed her that she didn't have to keep building up walls, and keeping people out. She...." He was struggling not to start crying now.
"She said she finally saw her through our eyes. One of the most memorable things that happened was the day she was able to lead her little brother, Jude, to the Lord. I remember him coming in, pulling her, and he....He was talking so fast. After about ten minutes, and a lot of smiling, laughing, and almost crying, we found out what had happened. That was one of the most amazing things I'd ever seen. And I......I am certain that I will see my daughter again, someday, in heaven. It doesn't take away any of the pain, but it is reassuring to know I will see her again." He picked up his paper, and went back to his seat, finally allowing the tears to flow. Then, Libby sang the same song that Elizabeth had listened to when she found out that her biological mom had died. Homesick, by Mercy Me. The rest of the service was a blur, and then they took her to the cemetery. That was also a blur. The next thing he realized was being handed the shovel, and painfully, he dropped the shovelful of dirt onto the coffin. Afterwards, Courtney placed a hand on his shoulder.

"We'll be in the car with Joel. Take your time." She whispered, and then lay a single rose on it. Luke stood over the freshly dug grave, staring at the headstone. It still didn't seem real. He read the inscription again, tears rolling down his cheeks. Elizabeth Grace Smallbone. July 7, 2000- July 1, 2017. To the Dreamers, wide eyed believers, hanging onto hope by a thread. To the soulful, heart open hopeful, keep on charging ahead. She was so close to her 17th birthday. He stared down at his hands, once again seeing her in his arms, his hands covered in her blood. He closed his eyes, and he heard her last words playing over in his head again. I will always love you. He knelt down, placing the two roses in front of the stone.

"Hey, beautiful. I....we miss you, so much. Jude wouldn't come out of his room for hours after we told him you were in heaven. He cried, and later he asked if you were an angel now." He chuckled slightly, tears blurring his vision.
"Phoenix keeps asking 'Where Libby?', and Courtney....I keep finding her staring at pictures of you." He pulled her stamped necklace out from under his shirt, looking at it.

"I miss you so much, baby. And that song, Homesick....it's true. I close my eyes, and I see your face. If home's where my heart is....part of me is out of place. I've never been more homesick than now. And we....we did To The Dreamers the other night. Your uncle Ben put together a video of photos of you, and we showed it during the song. I started crying during the song, because I could hear you singing along. And Moriah....She just found out yesterday that she's pregnant again. She and Joel also miss you. We started writing another song for you." The tears completely blurred his vision, and he started crying. He cover his face with one of his hands, still kneeling there, and he sobbed. He stayed there for probably ten minutes, and then he looked back up at the gravestone.

"This isn't going to get any better, and probably won't get any easier. But no matter what, baby, I will always love you." He whispered, and slowly stood, holding her necklace. He smiled sadly, then turned, heading back to the car. He knew, that no matter what, her greatest dream was fulfilled. She would never have any pain ever again, and she was home. And as he walked he heard it one last time. Her beautiful voice, singing the song she loved so much.

"To the dreamers, wide-eyed believers, hanging on to hope by a thread. To the soulful, heart open hopeful, keep on charging ahead!"
