Chapter Five

Don't get mad at me, please. I'm so sorry about this chapter, and I did cry while writing it. I'm so, so sorry.

Mr. Davis continued to apologise profusely for Kellie's actions as they went to the place where she had Elizabeth.

"If I had known about this sooner, I would've fast tracked the adoption papers. I am so, so sorry about this whole thing." Luke placed a hand on his arm as they drove.
"It's okay. It's not your fault." He sighed, turning.
"Here we are. I will see personally to her adoption from this point on." They got out, and started up. Then, they heard a crash, and screams. Luke nearly ran up to the door, trying to pull it open.

"It's locked!" Courtney pressed her ear to a window, hearing screams and crying. He ran around to the back, smashing a window and getting in.

"Elizabeth!!" He heard her crying and begging for something to stop.
"No! No, please, no! Dad, help!! Help me!" He ran into a bedroom, finding her bruised, bloody, and curled into a ball. Kellie stood over her, a kitchen knife in her hand.

"Get out of here!" She shrieked, and he grabbed her wrist, getting the knife away from her, but getting cut in the process. She took off, and heard Mr. Davis yelling. He ignored it, dropping to his knees beside her.

"Hey. Hey, it's going to be okay, baby. I've got you." She shook her head slightly.
"It....it hurts. Please, make it stop!" She sobbed, and he gently picked her up, sitting on the floor with her in his lap.

"What does?" She pointed to the discarded knife, and gently moved the hem of her shirt up.
"She....She stabbed me." She whispered, still crying. He started crying silently, gently pressing his hand over the two wounds to try and slow the bleeding. As he did, she only started crying harder, and to distract her, he started singing quietly.

Beat up, but won't be broken
Lonesome, but always searching
Homesick, but nobody's headed home soon
Keep on, keeping on, keeping on.

Long days, too many short nights
Wrong ways that almost felt right
Lovesick, but no one you're holding on to
Keep on, keeping on, keeping on
And sing along, sing along, sing along.

To the dreamers, wide eyed believers
Hanging on to hope by a thread.
To the soulful, heart open hopeful
Keep on charging ahead, cause
When you feel it, once you see it
And you breathe it, it's unforgettable.
When you know it, once you know it
And you hold it, it's unforgettable.

God knows you question your courage
And some days, I can't walk for stumbling
If we could only see what we're becoming
So keep on, keeping on, keeping on
And sing along, sing along, sing along.

To the dreamers, wide eyed believers
Hanging on to hope by a thread
To the soulful, heart open hopeful
Keep on charging ahead, cause
When you feel it, once you see it
And you breathe it, it's unforgettable
When you know it, once you know it
And you hold it, it's unforgettable.

He stopped singing, and she smiled weakly, coughing. Luke hugged her close, finally hearing the sirens wailing outside.

"Hey, it's going to be okay. You're going to get help, and then you can come home. You're not ever going back in the system." She smiled again, her blue eyes filling with tears.
"Could....Could you and I do that song together sometime?" He nodded, tears pouring down his cheeks.
"Yeah. We'll do it, me and you. You're going to be okay, baby. You can keep fighting. Jude and Phoenix....you three can keep building those block towers together. You and your mum...you can talk all night over popcorn and a movie." She chuckled slightly, still crying.
"That sounds good. Dad....I know I've never said it before, but....I....I love you, dad. I love you, and mum, and the boys. I'll always love you." She whispered, her eyes slowly closing. Luke shook his head, gently cupping her cheek, his fingers covered in blood.

"Elizabeth, come on. Hey, wake up. Come on, baby. You've got to wake up, Elizabeth. Elizabeth? Elizabeth!" He begged, nearly frantic. Courtney stood in the doorway, a hand over her mouth, and she nearly sobbed. He put two fingers on Elizabeth's neck, looked up at his wife....and slowly shook his head, tears streaming down his face.

"No!" She let out a strangled sob, and he stood slowly, holding his daughter close. He made it out to the lawn, and the paramedics took her, laying her on a gurney. Then, he saw what she had still clenched in her hand. The necklace he'd given her, the coin stamped with Priceless. He dropped to his knees in the grass, his whole body wracked with sobs.

"Why? Why, God? Why did you take her?! Why?!" He nearly screamed, and Courtney came over, placing a hand on his shoulder. He stood, wrapping his arms around her.

"She didn't deserve this." He whispered, and then simply held her close as they both cried. They cried for their daughter, who was so close to her seventeenth birthday. Who would never get to grow up, walk down the aisle, or have children of her own. Who was a dreamer, but one person's actions shattered all her dreams in one moment. Who was now in the arms of Jesus, happy, and not in pain. They would still have their pain, but they could know that she was safe. And their little dreamer? Well.....She wouldn't have any more of her dreams crushed.
