CHAPTER 41 : The Mirror of Erised*
A/N : Happy Christmas to all my friends and readers. I am giving you two bonus Christmas chapters to celebrate <3. Love ya all!!
Florina's POV:
The Christmas season was getting closer a few weeks later and with it came the first few good showers of snow curtesy of the winter season. Christmas decorations were hanged elegantly in the great hall and the some of the classrooms. Hagrid did most of the manual labour by bringing in the huge Christmas trees, a scene which I loved to watch.
I took permission from the headmaster to stay inside Hogwarts for the Christmas holidays and thankfully, he obliged. He of course, never met me nor spoke to me once for months. Whenever I tried to meet him, he would tell either Severus or David to speak to me instead. So I told David to take permission from him to let me stay.
Rose seemed to know why Dumbledore distanced himself from me but would always avoid my questions whenever I asked her about it. But there was something else that was on our minds.
We were expecting Davies to return back to us with some news, hopefully good ones. And she wanted to tell him about Markov's kidnap in hopes that he would know something about it.
My fairy got to the point where she would sit in front of the window day and night hoping for his return.
One day, David asked me why was I spending Christmas at Hogwarts. To that, I simply told him that I adore Christmas in Hogwarts with all its festivities. But a more truthful answer would have been that I also don't have a place to stay in for the holidays.
I am homeless.
And sadly, the only thing that might ruin the perfect Christmas mood was the way Severus was treating me. Ever since Quidditch, he once again distanced himself from me. It puzzled me how his mood can shift on a dime.
I was aware that since Halloween, he warned me not to try and be his friend but I thought that our nice time at the Quidditch match would make him reconsider. I wished that perhaps, he would slowly allow me to be his friend again.
Rose and I then decided that instead of thinking about that, I would try to forget about it and move on.
The teachers and the students were having their last breakfast in the great hall before most of them were off to spend Christmas with their family and friends.
"It's not much different from all my other Christmases," I whispered to Rose as I stuffed my face full with sausage.
Rose raised a brow, "Really? And why is that?"
"Well, I always used to spend Christmas here at Hogwarts," I said excitedly "it's actually quite fun."
"How is that?" she asked concerned about the tenth sausage that I swallowed whole. She frowned when I grabbed another one.
"For starters, the Christmas feast is great," I said mid-chew and she chuckled "they have the most amazing decorations," I paused to think and then exclaimed "AND THE TREES!"
Almost everyone at the table did a double take startled by my sudden exclamation. I gave them an apologetic smile in return.
"Subtle," I heard a cold whisper from my left and turned to see Severus scowl at me.
Finishing my breakfast faster than usual and giving my last class, I headed back to my quarters to take a nap when I saw the dark haired wizard coming from the other direction. He halted in front of me and nodded as I did the same still not understanding why was he acting so icy with me.
Previously, he actually fought with me to leave him alone but this time, it was different. He just decided to be cold towards me without any warning.
He was as cold as him on a bad day with seven students in detention and a potion that exploded in his classroom from an imbecile. That icy.
Awkward silence crept up on us as we stood there just staring at each other.
After those agonizing moments of silence, he started coldly "So I hear you are staying here for Christmas."
Beaming at him I said, "Yes I am, are you staying for Christmas too?"
"I don't usually stay at Hogwarts but this time I will."
I asked slowly, "May I ask why?"
"Who do you think will keep an eye on Quirrell?"
He seemed indifferent but I could feel the atmosphere around us getting ice berg icy and the weather wasn't to blame.
I nodded in return.
A side of me wanted to ask him why the chilliness but another more darker side wanted to punch him square in the lymph nodes for being so schizophrenic with me. But thankfully, I didn't obey either of them. We stood again staring down at our feet until it was broken by me who just had enough chilliness.
"Well, good day then," I ran to my quarters without once looking back.
Once I reached my living room, I started pacing and ranted "What's that bloke's problem? One day he is nice to me and the next day - Lo and behold - he hates me. I mean have I done something wrong or did the Earth stop revolving around its axis?"
"Florina, you have every right to be angry but let's not let that ruin our Christmas." She flew to me.
"Ro, you are right but..." I stopped abruptly and she bummed into me "I am just perplexed by his personality. I want to be really there for him but I just wish he would let me. Just like he did before."
She put a supporting hand on my shoulder, "Don't worry Flo, he is bound to comply eventually. If he did before then he will do it again, give him time."
I gave a long sigh and murmured, "Hopefully."

Florina's POV:
"Come on please, at least consider it!" Patrick exclaimed "You know how much I love the holidays and this will be the best one ever I promise."
"Are you sure Pat, wont I be imposing?" I asked uncertain but dancing with happiness from within.
"Of course I am sure Flo, my mom would love to have you," his emerald eyes were gleaming, "in fact, those were her exact words."
"That is very sweet of her. Well then, yes I would love to spend Christmas at your house."
He nodded and pulled me in for an embrace.
"To be honest," I whispered "this will be my first Christmas outside of Hogwarts," he grinned nodding in understanding "It will be very interesting to see how families celebrate the festivities."
"Well this time, you will be a part of that family," he held me at arm's length "so my good lady prepare to be amazed and possibly regretted."
"Oh how sweet and creepy at the same time," I said playfully nudging him lightly on the shoulder as he chuckled.
Pausing, he gazed down at me and whispered, "I love you" pulling my face closer to his and looking fondly into my eyes.
"I.....Love....you....too," I replied smiling.
I gave him a mischievous smile, "Right after chocolate and ice-cream but they are like my supplements so no worries, you're my main course."
He busted out laughing rubbing my hands in his. That scene was just blissful. I just loved acting silly on purpose just to get him to have an outburst like that. To me, such moments were priceless. I would trade anything for a moment like this.
Slowly, the scenery started to dissolve... vanish. The common room, the walls, the floor and eventually my Patrick. All of them slowly evaporated into thin air until I was left alone staring at the darkness ahead of me.
I shot up sweating and panting as if I ran a hundred marathons. Looking down at my alarm clock, I saw that I was asleep for nearly two hours. I ran a frustrated hand through my hair to get it away from my face and felt wetness around my eyes.
Was I crying? I wondered.
Maybe I had another one of those dreams that I annoyingly cannot recall, I thought.
This time though, I had a warm and soothing feeling running across my chest. It was also mixed irritatingly with sadness and longing.
Shaking my head, I rolled over to see Rose lightly snoring and decided not to disturb her. Slowly, I got out of bed, got a red flannel and a pair of jeans and went to the closet to change. When I emerged out, I found Rose sitting up on the bed stretching as far as her back would let her.
I sat on the foot of the bed, "Hey, want to take a trip around?" I asked her with mischievous expression.
"Are you asking me or telling me?" she nudged me after she flew by my side.
"Well...both," I beamed and she nodded in agreement.
"What time is it?" she asked out of the blue.
I turned to my wrist watch "Eight o'clock, why are you asking though?"
She shrugged, "Just curious."
I laughed out loud, "Don't you run around and steal curiosity from me. That's my trademark."
We were hiking quickly up the dungeon stairs afraid to be caught "So where do you want us to explore first," I whispered exiting the dungeon.
"I don't know," she sighed clearly out of ideas but then changed to excitement, "Wait! I know. Maybe we could go to the third floor, I have always wondered about the things that could be hidden in such a forbidden area."
"Oh! Now there is an idea," I chuckled nodding "I am glad you are becoming more and more like me every day."
I hurried to the moving staircase which was empty as most students were already home. Finally arriving at the deserted floor, I whispered "Now what?"
"Let's check the abandoned classrooms, one of them is bound to have something interesting," she pointed at a classroom ahead.
"Wow!" I exclaimed "You really are becoming me. What happened to my polite fairy?!" I gave her a I am-proud-of-you look which she joyfully accepted.
We began checking all the classrooms thoroughly but found nothing. One of the rooms had only rickety old tables and chairs, another had a few books and notes abandoned by their authors. A different very suspicious one had only grandfather clocks with all its shapes and sizes. But the most scary out of them, was a room full of spiders that almost made me scream bloody murder.
I have a MASSIVE Arachnophobia.
"Alright, raise your hand if you agree we are DONE!" I shouted as I came to a halt after running out of 'the room of dome' as Rose called it.
Both of us were panting heavily. We halted outside to catch our breaths and regain our composure as I was practically gasping for air.
After we regained our nerves, Rose flew ahead of me a few feet and then came back sprinting like a kid running to open his gifts on Christmas.
"Florina, we cannot be done just yet," she pointed at the far classroom "There is still one room left."
I looked up at her with a fake scowl, "If you really want me dead, just say so."
"Come on trust me," she chuckled shaking her head "I don't want to spoil anything but I am sensing a good vibe coming out of this last one."
Giving a sigh, I whispered, "If there is another damned spider in there, I am jumping on your shoulders and never coming down."
She gave me a happy nod, "Deal!"
We walked down to the last-good-vibe classroom and stood in front of the door. I looked up at Rose who gave me the thumbs up and ushered me forward. Carefully, I turned the knob and entered the classroom my eyes wide as a deer caught in headlights looking around frantically for a leg of a spider.
Surprisingly, there weren't any and it was safe for me to explore further without being panicky. Once we were in, we found stacks upon stacks of chairs and tables were piled up against the wall looking more like a storage room than a class room. I moved forward until I stopped dead in my tracks contemplating the object in front of me.
A huge and magnificent mirror almost as high as the ceiling with an ornate gold frame standing on two clawed feet laid in front of me. There was an inscription carved around the top ' Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi'.
I moved closer to the mirror puzzled wanting to see my own reflection. It was in vain though as I moved closer and closer to the mysterious mirror until I stepped right in front of it.
What I saw next was unbelievable that I had to clap my hands over my mouth hard to stop myself from screaming. It was impossible. I whirled around in horror and disbelief but saw nothing. I looked back at the mirror still in complete and utter shock.
In the mirror laid the smiling figure of my fiancé Patrick.
