CHAPTER 21 : Solitude*
The trio were staring at Florina intently. She kept staring at the ground terrified. She was petrified by Augustus's maniacal laughter in her head. Something about Agrippa's pleasure was filling her with unimaginable fear. But she couldn't understand why.
'What are you laughing at?' she croaked terrified of his answer.
'Oh...I...will...' he couldn't form a complete sentence from his constant laughter.
'I won't be ruining the surprise,' he sing-sung once he stopped laughing 'I have to say however, you are an easy target to manipulate. Rose didn't teach her carrier well. Didn't your mother teach you not to talk to strangers,' he paused 'Oh...right...you don't have one. Tut tut. Poor girl.'
She was filled with rage but couldn't speak. She wanted to warn the three beings that were staring back at her with confusion but she couldn't warn them. Her mind wasn't cooperating with her limbs. She remained a stiff board with a blank stare.
Whenever she tries to open her mouth to speak, her lips would go limp. They were held shut by massive force. A force that petrified her whole body. Her mind however was very active and angry.
'I...I won't let you hurt...hurt them,' she croaked. Little by little, she lost control over her mind as well. It began fading away and she was in a haze.
Augustus sighed. 'Oh how I wish you were there to stop me,' he said 'But I guess you will be aware enough to watch.'
'Wa..Watch?', Florina asked feeling dizzy her eyes drooping.
'The death of your friends of course' Augustus said maniacally 'They will wilt in front of you. Like a dying flower. Every drop of blood sucked out of their useless bodies. Beginning with the cold bastard. The one who thinks he is such a genius. He was even easier to trick. Just keep your eyes open and watch. I hope you enjoy the show.'
Severus's POV:
After Florina dropped her blood drop in the cauldron, her demeanor changed. She was stiff and shivering.
Was there something that scared her? Maybe cutting herself triggered her. I knew I shouldn't have let her do it by herself!
Even the tiniest of cuts could bring back old memories. Look at her state!
I felt instantly guilty for the witch. She said she cared for me the least I could have done is care for her as well.
"Woods, are you alright?" I asked trying to keep my voice impassive.
She kept staring at the ground fear evident in her eyes. I gently placed my hand on her arm and gave her a tender shake trying to bring her back to her senses. She however remained lifeless and unresponsive. I stood in front of her and shook her with both hands with much force. That didn't faze her either.
I turned to the ghost who remained confused and he too stood in front of the witch staring at her. He turned to me and shrugged.
"Does that happen to her on occasion?" he asked eyeing Florina.
I shook my head. "Not like that no."
Suddenly, Florina came back to life and casually raised her head giving me one of her most purest smiles.
"Is everything alright Sir?" she asked gently.
I stared at her bewildered. What's gotten into her? If she was alright from the beginning why didn't she just say so instead of giving us a heart attack.
I glared at her, "I should be the one asking you that Woods."
She shook her head and giggled. "Oh I'm fine sir. No need to worry yourself about my well-being. Isn't that what you always tell me sir?"
I arched a brow and our eyes locked. Her eyes were mesmerizing, always reminding me of the deep ocean. Sometimes I feel myself lost in her gaze. The pair that were staring up at me however weren't Florina's.
They belonged to...someone else. Florina's eyes are usually full of happiness and innocence. The pair in front of me were anything but innocent. They were mysterious and... different. It was as if what laid behind them was suddenly missing.
She titled her head to the side when I kept staring at her. "Shall we continue with the ritual sir?" she said quietly but I felt the urgency in her voice.
I wasn't convinced that she was completely fine. Maybe she was faking it. She always aimed to not worry me about her, maybe it's one of those instances. I got even closer to her unaware that we were a few inches apart.
"Are you sure you are alright Florina?" I whispered.
Her mouth twisted at the angle in slight hesitation. It was a brief moment however before she nodded smiling. "Yes Sev...sir I'm sure," she grinned.
Narrowing my eyes, my attention slowly fell to the cauldron. I picked up the chalk with my wand and drew a circle with a pentagram inside it around the pot. Once I was done, I gestured for Florina to sit on the edge of the pentagram. Keeping a close eye on her, I sat on the opposite end of the pentagram.
"Do you need the parchment to read the enchantment out of?" I asked eyeing her intently.
She shook her head a wide grin plastered on her face. "You always forget I have an eidetic memory Sir."
I nodded and looked down at the parchment. I read the enchantment once silently and on cue, we both started chanting in sync,
"By the morning star, by the unholy grounds.
Free the punished soul from their bounds
Let them be gazed upon with all their sounds
Let them be seen by the souls who shan't harm
But rather succumb to our charm."
Once we said the final verse, the cauldron burst into life foul red smoke coming out of it. It circulated the cave extinguishing the two torches that were our only source of light leaving behind an extremely dark cavern.
I lit the tip of my wand to see Florina mere inches away from me grinning manically. I was startled and jumped back putting a hand on my racing heart.
My wand light was extinguished once more and I lit it up as fast as possible. Crazy high-pitched cackle boomed inside the cave forcing me to shield my ears. I forced my eyes open to see the source of laughter and froze in place. It was coming from Florina herself! I whirled around myself to search for Davies but he was nowhere to be seen.
"I AM FREE!" a high-pitched voice boomed louder than before "I AM FINALLY FREE!"
It sounded familiar. And what did it mean by its free? My wand was extinguished for a second time. I sighed in frustration and yelled "LUMOS MAXIMA!" lighting up the entire cave. I looked around me to find everyone gone. Florina, Davies and the unconscious David. I was alone.
"Florina!" I growled but no one replied. I ran ahead trying to find the witch but the depth seemed to be unending. The further I ran forward, the further the cave walls stretched. I wasn't illuminating my surrounding anymore, it was lit up by itself.
Third Party POV:
Florina was forced to watch the potions master chant the enchantment along with her impostor. It was still her body. It was still her voice that spoke the enchantment. It just wasn't her mind that did. But she couldn't break out of it no matter how hard she tried. No matter how hard she focused on setting her mind and body free. She was just frozen.
Augustus inside her was bursting with excitement with every spoken verse. His excitement was toxic. She knows that feeling all too well. Freedom. That was the feeling of being caged in for a very long time and finally being set free. She recognized it because that's how she felt when she was coped up in the hospital. Like a caged animal that is finally being set to the wild. She felt herself shaking with his excitement.
The chant was done, the ritual was complete.
The laughter that was imprisoned inside her was finally set free. Augustus's laughter escaped her lips booming inside the cave. The lights were gone and she felt her body lunging for Severus.
He lit up his wand to find her staring at him grinning madly. It was Augustus's grin. Then in another moment of darkness, she felt herself being lifted off the ground. In a speed matching the speed of light, she was flown out of the cave. Her eyes were closed so she couldn't see where he was taking her. She only knew that she was as light as a feather in his hands. He carried her away with extreme ease as if he was holding a feather.
Rose and Davies were witnessing what was happening. They realized what happened the moment they heard Agrippa's laugh. They realized he was set free. But they felt helpless. The deed was done. He found a way to escape.
Rose refused to give up however. She felt herself crying tears of anger. All their years of hard work gone in a simple chant and ritual. She turned over to Davies to see him sharing the same rage.
Swiftly, she flew as fast as her fairy wings could carry her but she knew that wasn't enough. No matter how fast she was, she knew she couldn't compare to his speed.
Both Davies and her followed Florina to wherever Agrippa was taking her. He was incredibly fast and flying upwards with extreme ease. He couldn't feel the wind on his face because he wasn't human but he surely imagined how it felt like. The more he pushed himself upwards, the more his nasty grin intensified. Freedom. He at least felt the freedom.
He heard the fairy's wings flutter powerfully behind her trying to catch up to him. He looked over his shoulder and shook his head. He was positive she couldn't match his speed and felt confident. Holding the witch tightly in his arms, he flew in a straight line increasing his speed.
"When did he acquire the power to fly so smoothly?" Rose growled over the howls of the wind.
"I don't know!" Davies exclaimed trying to keep up "Maybe it is one of Lucifer's blessings. What's more important now is where is he taking her?"
Rose was panting heavily angry that she couldn't keep up with Agrippa. She wasn't sure of the answer to Davies's question but she had a hunch.
If she knew the ghost better, she would say he would be taking her away from reality and into his realm. A realm that cannot be visited by a living being. A realm that is only meant for the lost souls.
Wandering souls.
Souls who were killed before their untimely death.
Souls like Davies.
When Rose went silent, Davies knew what she was thinking of, after all it was the most logical explanation.
"Rose, you are a living being!" he growled behind her "You cannot last more than ten minutes in our realm. You will disappear and your soul will be trapped forever."
"I am not leaving Florina, Davies!" she exclaimed keeping her focus ahead "Agrippa wants to...HE WANTS TO TRAP HER IN HIS REALM. And I don't know what is he planning to do with her. If it's dangerous for me imagine how would it be for her. She is a human!"
The fairy was extremely focused on only one thing, to rescue her carrier with all her being. Even if it meant losing her soul and wander aimless till the end of time.
"Rose!" Davies flew beside her struggling to keep up "Just listen to me! I can return her back to you myself. I have already lost my soul and I am trapped there with no escape. There won't be any harm done to me. Leave it up to me."
She wasn't listening to him. Her senses and being were shut down. Only one thought was driving her forward. To rescue Florina.
They saw Agrippa breaking the earthly realm gently. In a spilt of a second, they were inside the tunnel that connects his realm with the human realm.
"Rose!" Davies growled louder as he was finding it extremely difficult to keep up with the fairy.
Her speed was beginning to match his brother's speed. She was losing her remaining energy fast, depleting it with every second. She was feeling it to as she began to pant heavily. Very heavily. Every moment she feels like her speed is diminishing , she doubles her energy use to keep up with Augustus.
"ROSE ARE YOU MAD!" Davis shouted but she ignored him "YOU WILL KILL YOURSELF! LEAVE IT UP TO ME YOU STUBBORN FAIRY!"
Rose kept ignoring him and pushed forward close on Agrippa's tail. They saw him taking a turn above the Earth's clouds breaking out of its atmosphere. He kept moving forward through the tunnel.
They were surrounded with just darkness.
Emptiness.
Solitude.
