The Happily Ever After

It was a warm spring day and Zelda was leaving one of her many committee meetings. This one was for a hospital fundraiser that was to take place in a few weeks' time. It had been a short meeting, and she hadn't needed to pull her leaving early trick.

"How is Boone doing?" Gianna asked her as they pushed through the doors of the church where they had been meeting. Zelda felt the warm sun hit her skin, and she gave a sigh of relief at finally being free. She looked at her watch and it was time for lunch.

"He's fine," Zelda smiled at the thought of him.

"You're a lucky woman. I saw him play at his bar the other night. He's a very talented man." Gianna looked at her with an envious glance.

"You don't know the half of it," Zelda agreed, her warm smiled turning into a secret one.

Boone was great, and it was wonderful to have him in her life. Waking up next to him proved to be better than she had ever thought it could be. He had told Eden that he couldn't marry her because he was going to marry Zelda, but he had assured her that he loved her and would always be there for her, and for the last six months he had been. Boone had taken care of Eden when she was sick, helped her with her homework, and taught her how to fish. He was proving to be a wonderful father.

Zelda had heard second hand from her daughter that Boone had turned her offer of marriage down because he was going to marry Zelda, and while her heart had jumped for joy at the news, she was a bit upset that he had told Eden and not her. This had all happened a few months earlier and Zelda had yet to be proposed to by Boone.

With a wave goodbye to Gianna, Zelda started her walk toward Maspero's for lunch, she knew that Boone would be waiting for her, and as soon as she entered the restaurant she saw him sitting at the bar talking to Jonny. Their weekly lunch as Maspero's had become a habit and one of Zelda's favorite weekly occurrences.

"Hey, fancy seeing you here," Zelda teased as she sat next to him while giving Jonny a warm greeting.

"I know, crazy how I always turn up. You do have your wallet, right?" Boone leaned over and gave her a quick kiss in greeting.

"Ha ha!" Zelda said when her lips were free once again. "Did you order for me?" she asked as she reached for her glass of sweet tea and took a sip.

"I did, but before we eat, I have a surprise for you," Boone nodded towards a table by the door and Eden jumped up form where she had been sitting and ran toward them.

Zelda frowned in confusion, they hadn't talked about Eden joining them for lunch. Eden had been sitting with Zebadiah and Lucy, who both remained seated as Eden darted towards her and Boone.

"Is it time?" Eden whispered in a not so quiet voice as she climbed onto the bar stool on Boone's other side.

"Almost," he whispered back, giving her a wink.

Zelda looked from Eden and Boone to Jonny, but other than trying to hide a smile as he wiped the bar, Jonny wasn't giving anything away. Then she turned to Lucy and Zebadiah who were quietly talking between themselves.

"I'm guessing that we're not eating here?" Zelda asked, turning her attention back to Boone.

"You're so smart, I think I'll marry you," Boone said, grabbing her hand as Zelda started to hear distant music. It was a jazz band which she disregarded because it wasn't a strange thing to hear in the middle of the French Quarter.

"Do you love me?" Boone asked.

"You know I do, Boone. What is all of this about?" Zelda looked over at Eden, who was jumping up and down in her excitement. Zelda had heard the 'I think I'll marry you' comment, but she was ignoring it for the time being.

"You know that I adore you and Eden, and I want to do is spend the rest of my life loving you."

"I know that Boone, you tell me every day."

"Will you marry me, Zelda?" Boone asked in a serious tone, gripping her hand tight as if he was afraid she might say no.

"You know I will, Boone." Zelda assured him in a soft voice, watching him with love as he lifted her hand to his mouth and kissed it gently.

"Will you marry me right now?" Boone stood and tugged on her hand, leading her to the door of the restaurant. The band was close and the sound was almost deafening, but Zelda could feel the beat of the music in her soul.

"Boone!" Zelda asked with an inquisitive smile, not really believing he was serious while she watched the street before the restaurant door as it filled with musicians, many of whom she recognized as those that worked at Boone's bar. "Boone?" her voice quivered a little as it dawned on her that he was serious, that he had arranged the parade for them.

"I thought we needed an escort to city hall." Boone grinned at Zelda as the band stopped in front of the restaurant and held a mini concert in the middle of the street while tourist took photos and locals danced.

"You arranged a second line parade?" Zelda felt tears forming as she looked at him. It was such a special thing to do. It was as if he was telling the whole world that he love her.

"It's for us, Mommy! Boone loves us sooooo much!" Eden exclaimed as the jazz band started on another song and Eden danced her way onto the sidewalk.

"Boone, I'm not dressed. What about Zebadiah and Lucy?" She looked over her shoulder, toward the restaurant.

"There," Boone pointed towards the back of the band where Zebadiah and Lucy stood waiting, holding hands, they had sneaked out the side-door of the restaurant, "and as for not being dressed, you look beautiful no matter what you wear." He sealed his words with a kiss. "But, we can always do it again with the fancy costumes and church if you want. I'll marry you as many times as you want, Zelda Abbott."

Zelda nodded her agreement since she was so overwhelmed she couldn't speak. After all, how many women got a parade escort to their own wedding. Boone took her hand and stepped out onto the street. One of the musicians handed him a trumpet and he joined in with the others without missing a beat.

Eden took Zelda's hand and held it as she danced along, pleased to be a part of her very own parade. As they walked, others joined in and before long they had a very large mass of people who were part of a celebration they knew nothing about. It was a beautiful spring day, and Zelda's heart was filled with joy.

When they reached the courthouse steps, Summer, Zebadiah's assistant, was waiting for them with a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a few odds and ends to spruce up Zelda's outfit. She preformed amazing things before stepping away.

The, once again, Boone was standing next to her, and he took her hand in his while Eden was on his other side.

"Are you ready?" he asked. Zelda could see all of the love he felt reflected in his eyes.

"I am," Zelda nodded then turned to Eden. "Are you're ready?" she asked her daughter.

"Yes!" Eden jumped up and down squealing in delight as she was handed her own bouquet of flowers.

"Then let's go!" Boone insisted as he led his girls up the steps and into their future and happily ever after.
