Chapter 7- Favorite Place
KrakenKid
"Hey! Slow down for a second, you're gonna make me-"
It was too late. As the young penguin dragged me out of his makeshift home and up the mountain, I tripped over one of the jagged rocks and face planted. A low groan came out as I slowly sat back up. Young Cody just giggled. "Whoops! Sorry." I huffed and got up, dusting myself off in the process. "If you just listened to me penguin then none of this would have happened!" I gave him a glare but Cody only laughed in response. "You're lucky that you're a child or I'd slap you." I mumbled under my breath.
"What was that?"
"Wouldn't you like to know..."
The child just rolled his brown eyes in response. "And you wonder why I call you KrankyKid." He joked and kept making his way further up the mountain. I sighed and followed. Cody was faster than me and reached the top in seconds. I was partially struggling with it. "Just swim faster! Come on grandpa!" I groaned and finally made it to where he was standing. "I'm not used to this dense water you know! Where I'm from, the water is so much easier to swim in."
The penguin chuckled. "We'll talk about that later but for now, look at this!" His flipper pointed out as we stood on the top of the mountain. I followed to where he was pointing and stopped.
We were way up but we could see everything. There was colorful coral, as far as the eye could see and with the sun beating down on it, you could appreciate it a lot more. Farther out was a city made out of stone. The lights were dimmer, now being rivaled by the sun, but still visible. I could only imagine what it must look like up close or in the dark. There were mushrooms too, coming in all different colors. Some of those even had rare kinds of ores that would be cherished in Atlantis.
Every once in awhile, a school of fish would pass. Watching this all was truly amazing. I said nothing for the longest time, only staring at the sight in front of me. The silence was only broken by the penguin, who was snickering. I blinked, giving him a strange look. "What?" I demanded. The smug smile was still plastered on his face. "Sorry but-" He broke off, snickering even more. "You had this dumb look on your face!" I let out a short puff of breath. "So what? You always have a dumb look on your face."
The child giggled for a while before realizing what I said. "HEY!" He protested and this time I was laughing. "Oh, revenge is sweet." I relaxed my shoulders and enjoyed the view once again.
"So, I wanted to show you this place!" His arms spread out and waved over the whole thing. His smile returned once again. "It's my favorite place to go! My Mom takes me here every once in awhile. It's so pretty and great for a picnic!" He exclaimed and showed off more of the black fruit. "Didn't we just eat?" I pointed out. His face fell, turning more serious and locking his eyes with mine. My heart began to panic. Cody moved his face closer and I found myself backing up. "Uhh... What are you-" I was cut off.
"What did you just say punk?" His voice was now lower than mine. "I-" I stuttered. "I will fight you!" I threw my tentacles in the air. "Okay fine! You win!" Brown eyes narrowed on my yellow ones. "That's what I thought BUDDY!" In seconds, the warmth in his eyes returned. "So do you want some or?"
I blinked. What is up with this kid? "Yeah... Sure." He handed me the fruit and while he chomped down on it, I just stared into it. What did I get myself into? I wondered before slowly taking a bite.
"So, where do you come from?" The kid asked me. "Atlantis." I responded. His head perked up. "Atlantis? As in the Atlantis?" I nodded carefully. "Yes?" His eyes lit up. "WOW! THAT MUST BE SO COOL!" He startled me with his volume. A chuckle escaped me and I shrugged. "I guess so?"
"You know I used to live there!" The statement didn't entirely surprise me. He was heir to the the throne there but it did raise one question. "Why aren't you there now?" He stopped smiling and started to think. "I'm not entirely sure but I do remember one thing." Cody stated. "What?" I asked, interested in the answer.
"I remember living there for one thing. It was a long time ago but I remember it. I was born there and living with my Mom and my Dad. They were happy! I also remember I had a brother. His name was Joe! We often played together and had adventures! He was my best friend."
Then the child paused in his story. "Then what happened?" I prompted.
"Well, I think something went wrong. One day, My Mom was yelling at my Dad for doing something. She said he made the wrong choice and then later in the week, we both left! I haven't seen either of them since then, which is pretty sad. I liked them! My brother was so cool and funny, always able to make me smile. I really looked up to my Dad too! He was always so cool and wise and just a hero!I want to be just like him when I grow up! He's like a role model to me!"
He shouldn't be. A bitter thought entered my mind.
"It's been quite a while since then though. I went to a school a while ago but..." His voice trailed off. His eyes lost their spark and now was more interested in the floor than anything else. Pushing away the bitterness, I asked about it. "But?" The black and white head shook. "Never mind. Anyways," He perked his head back up and gazed at me. "Tell me more about you Kranky!"
"What do you want to know?" I decided to humor the kid. He wasn't too bad and only half as annoying as the Cody I knew. I sat back as he sat forward, his eyes glinted with glee. "Hmm... Well, tell me about your life! What do you do? Who are your friends? Who or what is Blooper?"
My heart stopped at the last question. "Wait, what did you say?" His head tilted. "What do you do?" I shook my head. "No, no, not that! The last question, what did you say?" Cody hummed for a second before remembering. "Oh! Who or what is Blooper?" He said again. Okay so I did hear him right.
"How did you know about Blooper?" I squinted my eyes at him. "You mentioned him last time when I was crying. I think you said something like, "What would if it were Blooper?" or something like that. So, who's Blooper, or what is it? I'm not really sure here." I cleared my throat, my heartbeat going back to normal. "Well, Blooper is my son." Who isn't even born yet in this point of time. Timelines are so weird. The penguin's eyes lit up and began pestering me with questions.
"You have a son? Who's the Mom? What's he like? Does he look like you? Does he act like you? Do you-"
"One question at a time man!"
The child apologized and slowed down. "Just.. .Tell me more about him!" I grinned. People always asked me that and I always loved to answer it. Talking about my own son was just enjoyable and always fun to tell other how great he was. "Well, like I said, his name is Blooper. He is a kraken like me and looks a lot like me too. As for the acting part, he sorta acts like me. He's assertive and funny and strong, like me but as a more trickster side too. He is his own person and I wouldn't give any of that up for the world." I finished and found myself smiling. Cody was too.
"That's amazing! I'd love to meet him sometime." I smirked to myself. "Maybe one day you will."
Silence passed and Cody got up. "Well, I have a couple more places I'd like to visit so come on!" He ushered me. I stretched as I stood and he started to climb down the mountain. I was about to join him.
But then I looked down.
Terror struck my heart as I cried out and shut my eyes, taking in long breaths. I could hear the shuffling stop. "Kranky? What's wrong?" I took in another long breath and exhaled. My heart wasn't calming down. Every time I tried to, my mind went back to thinking about it. "I-I" I stammered and gulped. "I'M AFRAID OF HEIGHTS!" I screeched and my breaths turned ragged.
"What? We were up there for so long and you didn't seem bothered at all!" Cody spoke, confused. "Yeah well, I didn't notice it until now!"
I attempted to open my eyes again but regretted it immediately. "Okay, uh no. No I am just going to stay here forever with my eyes closed. There is no way I am going down that DEATH HILL."
"Death hill?" I heard the child snicker but soon he grabbed my hand and lightly tugged. "Uh- what do you think you're doing?" He pulled again and made me step down a little bit. "PENGUIN! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" I raised my voice and fear corsed through me.
The penguin did not stop and pulled more and I descended even more. "I'm helping! You can keep your eyes closed and I'll guide you through it." I scoffed. "Okay, no. I don't trust you enough to do this." He did it again and I yelped. "AAA! Stop that!" He huffed. "Well either you do this with me or I leave you here to the sharks." I paused. "Sharks?" I questioned. I could just hear him smirking. "Yep. A lot of fish come up here and what loves to eat fish?" Oh crap he's right. "So, what's it going to be?"
I stayed silent but sighed. "Fine. Just... Be careful." Cody did it again and I felt myself fall a lot more than normal, making me let out a squeak. "Don't worry! I'm the most trustworthy person around." I murmured under my breath but let him continue.
The penguin guided me off the mountain, giving me a heart attack a couple million times before we reached the bottom. "Okay, we're here!" The child announced proudly as I creeked open my eyes. I let out a breath and nodded. "We are... Good work penguin." He just smiled warmly.
"No problem Kranky!"
"Please stop calling me that."
