Chapter 15- Return To Your Roots

KrakenKid

"I never told you my last name!" The younger Cody repeated, his eyes locked onto mine. "How'd you know my last name?"

I opened my mouth to respond but some sort of weird "Uh" sound came out instead. The brown eyes searched mine for some sort of answer. "KrankyKid?" I took in a long breath, deciding on what I'd say during it. No matter what I did, there was only one answer: The Truth. The only problem was how was I supposed to say it?

"Oh boy..." I sighed and sat down on the ground. My two main tentacles covered my face and I just rubbed my eyes, thinking about how badly I messed up. After a long moment, I looked back up, meeting his eyes finally.

"Okay. Cody Maverick, I know you because we've met before, but not in this part of time. I actually have no idea how this all happened or why, but I'm actually from the future. Way in the future."

The penguin blinked. "What? The... Future?" I nodded.

"I know it sounds crazy, but hear me out! I'm from Atlantis. I lived there for a long time, but then... Like I said, I'm the last one. Or one of them at least. In the future, I have a son, Blooper, I think I told you about him? Not the point. Basically, I know you in the future. We've ran into each other more than a couple of times. I even knew you before-..." I cut myself off but I had said too much.

"Before? Before what?"

He won't remember it. You can tell him. "Before you got amnesia. You, your brother and your mother all left Atlantis for business. Normally, the borders were off limits and with your father gone you would have stayed, but it was important. I never quite found out what it was, but none of you came back. At least not the people Atlantis and I knew."

I paused. Cody's eyes drifted to the ground, his eyebrows knitting together, and then his head shot back up. "What'd I forget?"

"Pretty much everything in the past. Your childhood, growing up, all of that. You came back barely knowing Atlantis."

The child looked like they were going to burst into tears. "But... I don't want to forget anything! My Mom? My life? My HOME? I-I can't let that happen!" I shushed him. "It sounds kinda scary, I know, but believe me when I say it's for the better. I knew you before it happened, and when you left, you changed. For the better. You came back and suddenly became dead set on making Atlantis better than your father ever did. It needs to happen."

He paused. "What about my Mom? My brother?"

I thought back. "Your brother does come back with you in the same state of amnesia. Your mother... Nobody really knows. Anyone who would know, forgot. I'm sure she's fine." I reassured the child, not wanting him to cry. The truth was, his mother went off the radar. Nobody knew what happened, but there was no way I was telling him that.

Cody nodded along, then asked another hard question. "Well how do you know me in the future?"

I rubbed the back of my head. "I'm the Villain in Atlantis. I go against everything your father stands for, and therefore, you. Actually I was terrorizing the city before I got here. To be honest, I'm not sure what I'm going to do when I get back."

His eyes widened. "You're a villain?"

"Yep."

"Why?"

"Because Atlantis has wronged me and my kind and I'm sick of Kings who pretend they know what's best for the city. I've been around longer and I've seen it at its best and its worse. If anyone should be running it, it's me. I'm the one who knows it best, and I plan on making it better than before," I looked him deep in the eye. "Even if it means I have to destroy it first."

He stayed silent for a while. ... Did I scare him?

"KrakenKid... Have you tried talking to him?" I stared blankly making him try again. "Have you tried talking to future me? Does he even know that Atlantis has wronged you? Have you tried helping him make it a better city, not by taking it over, but talking to him?"

"..." I didn't say anything. He tried again. "Maybe you wouldn't be the villain if you told him all of that. Maybe you could come to an agreement. You might know the city better, but maybe future me is what the people truly need as a King! Not someone who's seen the city for its worse and thought nothing could make it go back except him, but someone who sees it as a fresh city. You might be right! Maybe I needed to get amnesia! To see Atlantis differently! Maybe... I needed to become a better person. You can help future me. Just talk to him!"

There was only silence for the longest time, but I cracked a smile. "For a child, you're pretty wise." Cody giggled in response. "Fine, I'll try talking to him but he's a lot like you. Always getting on my nerves."

"Yeah but you like me! I can tell! You wouldn't have protected me from the sharks if you didn't."

I let out a light laugh. "I suppose. But since I'm doing that, which is HUGE for me, I think you're going to have to do something in return."

The journey took maybe a day but we made it. Cody led me through the overworld and now, we were at his door. His hand was raised to knock it, but he hesitated, looking back. I gave him a little nod of encouragement and he returned it as best as possible, then did it.

The sound of shuffling came from inside the house when finally a woman opened the door. She had white skin, blonde hair and blue eyes that searched my face. Her eyes glanced down on the one who knocked and widened.

"CODY!" In seconds, she engulfed him into a hug. They were just there for what seemed like eternity, embracing before she pulled away. "Cody! Where were you? I was worried sick! Also who's this?" She nodded towards me.

"I was living by my favorite place!" His mother thought for a moment. "The one place by the mountain?" He nodded. "I can't believe I didn't think of that!"

"Also, this is my friend! KrankyKid! He protected me from a shark, comforted me when I had a nightmare and just kept me company! He even got me to come back here. I'm sorry I ran off, I don't know what came over me, but I'm back now!"

She nodded, sparing a look at me then back to the penguin again. "Cody, if you don't mind, go inside. I want to thank your friend here." He nodded, obeying and left me with his mom. I gulped a bit, unsure of what she would say. As the blonde approached, I noticed wings folded on her back. That's why Cody's a penguin and she isn't! Avian blood!

"You brought my boy back?" I confirmed it. She smiled softly. "Thank you Mr-"

"KrakenKid." I quickly told her. "KrankyKid is just a nickname that kinda stuck. And it was my pleasure. Most of the time at least."

The lady laughed. "I'm sure you figured out that Cody can be a bit of a handful sometimes, but he really has the best interests at heart and always wants to take the perfect path, even if there isn't one. Cody wants to help everybody, good and bad. A trait I wish my husband had."

I cleared my throat. "I heard about your husband..." My voice trailed off, unsure of what to say. "On behalf of his actions, I am truly sorry about what happened to your kind. It's actually why I'm not in Atlantis right now. I know I have to take Cody back one day so he can do what he needs to, and I know I have to talk to him. Even if I hate what he did, I still have to say something. He cared about Atlantis more than anything. Even more than our relationships and the population of krakens. He only wanted to keep it safe, even if his actions were... You know."

Atlantis... Something just spoke to me whenever I heard the word. Like a spark. All I could think of when it came up was the Nexus. The Nexus... "Actually, regarding Atlantis." Her head perked up. "I was wondering if you could... Take me there? To the portal?"

"WHAT? Are you crazy? They won't allow that!"

"I know, but I really need to get in. There's something there that I need." She stared in disbelief but gave in. "Fine, hold on. I'm going to get my neighbor to babysit Cody while we're away." She glanced back at her son, sitting in the living room and swinging his legs up and down merrily. "You can say goodbye if you want."

Cody's mother pushed past, allowing me to enter the house. I sat down in the living room, next to Cody and took a breath in. "Hey Cody?" He made a 'Hmm?' sound. "I'm going to go home. This is going to be the last time you'll see me in a while."

The penguin stopped and jerked his head in my direction, his face unreadable "But won't I see you again? In the future?" I nodded. His smile returned and he hugged me tightly. "Then it isn't truly goodbye! I'll see you again, and next time I do, I'll be trying to make Atlantis a better place!" A grin crept on my face and I hugged back.

"You might be annoying, but I'll miss you too. Next time you'll be seeing me, past me will probably be blowing something up and making a speech? I don't know but look out for me! You'll know me when you see me. Goodbye penguin."

"Goodbye KrankyKid!"

Leaving the house, an old woman walked in with Cody's Mom right behind her. "Ready?" I nodded.

"Take me home."
