Ways To Deal With Anxiety/Intrusive Thoughts
This is just for anyone who needs some actual anxiety or intrusive thoughts remedy methods, from the mind of someone who actually went through anxiety and knows good ways to calm themself. For now, I will list as many ways that I remember in the hope that they will help whoever is going through rough times with their minds <3
WAYS TO DEAL WITH ANXIETY AND INTRUSIVE THOUGHTS:
1. Put on a lighthearted TV show or read a lighthearted book, anything that makes you feel comfortable. One thing that always helps is getting my mind off of everything. It seems somewhat cliche and basic, but it helps so much, honestly.
2. If I ever feel stressed or paranoid, it helps to lock the rest of the world out of my mind by putting in earbuds and listening to my favorite band or artist. Listening and engrossing myself in the lyrics is a very good way to keep my worries away.
3. Keeping myself busy is another way to keep my paranoia out. When my anxiety gets the best of me, I enjoy doing the things I love, like drawing, painting, or other creative art pieces. It has been proven that when you are worried or afraid, or your body is in a state of panic, your creativity level tends to be higher.
4. Aromatherapy. This anxiety remedy can actually connect with the one above, using creativity to keep your anxiousness far from your mind. For me, I've gotten many "scent or perfume" DIY kits and have created my own personal aroma in a bottle, which is a mix of coconut, tropical fruit, and vanilla. Whenever I feel uncomfortable or scared, I spray the aroma under my nose to keep the smell with me. It has also been proven that "aromatherapy," is a technique using scents and smells to calm the body.
5. Call/Facetime friends and family, or conversate with family and friends in real life. The feeling of speaking and having a general discussion with people I care about will rise up over your anxious feelings. It's good to talk about your anxiety as well, it'll make you feel better if you address the problem directly.
6. Controlling your breathing. I have a specific formula for breathing methods. Controlling your breathing will bring your overall heart rate down, which is a personal "body calmer." What I do specifically is: Count from one to twenty, breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth. Then, count down from twenty all the way to one, breathing in through your mouth and out through your nose. Keep your eyes shut, and repeat this until you feel calm. Counting out loud also tends to help.
6. Eat something. Yes, usually heightened paranoia is caused by the lack of food and hydration. Most of the time, all I needed was a break from life and a little bit of a snack. Get yourself a main dish of protein, a vegetable or fruit, and something sugary on the side to keep your blood sugar regulated. Then, get some iced water or another drink.
7. Lie down. You don't necessarily need to sleep, but most of the time, your body needs to recharge. Lay down with a fan facing your way and a blanket over you. Keep your hands outstretched by your sides to keep your breathing under regulation.
8. Yoga. This seems a bit stupid, but calming your body using yoga methods actually does help, I promise. It causes your blood to keep itself calm, and it slows your heart to a normal pace. Here are some yoga poses that I recommend:
9. Acceptance. For one thing, it's important to accept that you have anxiety and that you can't exactly control everything that happens. Once you've accepted this, you might feel better and know what to do in the future, rather than placing yourself in a state of denial and ignoring your anxiousness.
10. Welcome humor. If someone is trying desperately to cheer you up, don't ignore them or put them down. Even if you tell them that you need some time alone, you never actually mean it, take it from me. If anybody wants to spend time with you to attempt to cheer you up, don't deny them. At least let them try, it'll make you feel better.
11. Take a walk, specifically with beautiful scenery. To calm myself, I enjoy taking car rides or walks and enjoy the mountainous range, the pretty flowers, and the animal sounds. The wind feels nice, and it reminds me of my mortality. It is truly a no-brainer when it comes to calming methods.
12. This one is shorter, but it does help to pet animals, like reptiles, dogs, and cats. Feeling their soft fur helps bring down heart rate.
13. Tell yourself that you did the best you could and that you are perfect just the way you are. Self-depreciation is often the cause of intrusive or bad thoughts, which often lead to suicide. The only approval you need is your own, and if your own mind tells you that you aren't worth it, things might be worse. Have a pep talk with yourself, which is a helpful reminder that you are only one human being and often has some faults and breakdowns, but they shouldn't define you.
14. Use your five senses. This is an old way to calm yourself down, but it works. It's a good way to revisit your mortality and how human you actually are. This is what I often do: Count five things you can see. Count four things you can hear. Count three things you can touch. Count two things you can taste. Count one thing you can smell. Continue this process until you feel comfortable and better.
