17 - The abandoned tiger
Have this backstory I pulled out of my ass because the first backstory I made was not loyal to the canon material
I wanted to make sure that I stick to it because this boy is my favourite character he just gives me so much comfort.

You've met Kazutora a lot earlier than the rest of your friends, a lot earlier than Baji. But that fact has long been gone from your memory, only resurfacing now, in the few moments before death.
Even if this did occur to you now, you knew that Kazutora will never remember it. He has long forgotten the painful memories of his childhood.
Summer. It was in the middle of summer when you first met him, you were around seven, just a year after meeting the Sano family and Baji.
"....Are you.... Alright?" You asked the small boy sitting on the ground, silently crying to himself. You didn't know if he ignored you or your voice was too soft to be heard, so you approached him, sitting beside him, but still keeping your distance. "...Are you okay?"
"..." The boy sniffed, wiping his face before carefully looking your way. ".....yeah..."
He was lying, that much was obvious. He was just crying when you found him, and tears were still streaming from his eyes. You can see that he's pretty upset by something, or maybe...
"Does it hurt?" You asked, your eyes going over to the obvious bruises on his body and his face. "You have a lot of injuries."
He flinched, nervously turning away from you and gripping his arms quite tightly. You might be young, but you weren't dumb. It was painfully obvious that this boy was being abused.
"....What's your name? I'm (Y/N)..." You introduced yourself, still keeping your eyes on him. You've learned how to properly communicate over the past year, so hopefully, you can talk to this boy and help him.
".....-tora..." He whispered, his voice barely audible. He seems to be very soft spoken, or rather, he could barely say anything. You couldn't even hear the first part of his name.
"....Hmh... nice to meet you." You reached for your pocket, taking out the snack you bought for yourself to eat later on, but this boy seems like he could eat something. You placed it on the ground, sliding it over to him. "Here you go."
There was silence once more as you opened the book in your hands, reading quietly. But you also kept on peeking over him once in a while. It made you smile a little when the boy took the snack you placed down, eating it quietly and curiously peeking over to you.
"....Do you want to read with me?" You lowered your book, turning to look at the boy. He was hesitating at first, but soon crawled over to you, sitting next to you, looking over your shoulder.
And so, you spend the rest of the afternoon reading with the injured boy whose name you still don't know. And when the time for the library to close came, it was time for you two to part ways.
"...Do you want to read again tomorrow?" Without knowing it, you asked the boy, holding onto his sleeve before he left. He blinked a few times, looking to be confused. "We didn't finish the book.... I-If you want to finish it... we can... r-read tomorrow..."
"...Tomorrow..?" The boy's eyes were wide, but not in any negative sense, but rather, he was quite shocked that someone would want to keep him company. "O-okay... same time tomorrow?"
"...Yes..!" You smiled brightly, feeling a familiar feeling bubbling up inside you. "I'll see you tomorrow... Tora!"
"It's actually Kazutora- and she's gone..." Kazutora sighed with a smile, watching as you ran off. He felt fluffy and warm inside... it's a change to how he feels back home. 'A friend.... Huh.... my first friend..'

The next day rolled around and you came at the very same time as you promised the boy, but this time, you came with a few extra things. You were quite lucky to have brought them, because today, the boy seems to have an extra injury on his face.
"....Tora... Do you want me to treat it for you?"
He only nodded, a lot more open now than from what he was like yesterday. You took out a few things on your bag, ointment, patches, tissue, and water. While treating the boy, he was completely still, not even an ouch or anything, so you decided to clean up his injured face, fixing him up the best you could.
"...um... it's not the best... but I hope you're better now..." You frowned, looking at the amount of patched up injuries he had, and these were just places you could see. But even after all this pain, the boy still smiled at you. "....Tora, do you want to read a book now?"
"Yeah!" He beamed, if you squint hard enough, you might see a tail wagging behind him.
And so, you spent another day reading with the boy you decided to name Tora. Even if it wasn't his real name, he wasn't complaining. You two shared the snacks you brought and almost got caught by the librarian. And when it was closing time, you and he parted ways again.

"(Y/N).... what is your dad like?" The boy suddenly asked, making you pause on your reading, looking at him and asking him why he wants to know. He fidgeted nervously with his fingers before answering, "....I'm... curious..."
"...I see..." You can guess why he wants to know, he probably wants to know what other parents are like. But unfortunately for him, he can't get that answer from you, "I don't have a dad." [Heavy stuff there kid]
"Eh? You don't?"
"Mhm." You nodded, placing the bookmark on the book and focusing on the snacks and at the boy. "My father left when I was four, I don't remember his face or his voice... but I can remember him always drinking at night..."
".....Oh.... I see..." He was sad for you. You didn't have a single hint of sadness on your face, only indifference. You didn't care at all that you didn't have a father. "Then... uh... how about your mom?"
"Hmm... I don't know." You answered again, taking another gummy bear and munching on them, still looking at the boy with indifference. "My mom is there... but we don't really talk to each other... So... I guess.... It's like... not having a mom altogether..." [Im—]
"Oh..." Kazutora didn't know how he could tell, but even if you looked unbothered by that, you sounded quite sad when talking about it. There was silence again, but he wasn't bothered by it, not in the slightest, rather, "Aren't you... going to ask about mine?"
He brought up that topic because he wanted you to ask back. He wanted to tell it to someone he can trust. He wanted someone to hear him out... even if he might be forgotten.
"...You don't have to tell me." You said, picking up two gummy bears, taking his hand and placing those two on the palm of his hands, moving them to be together. "When I saw you... I could already guess... But... if you want to, then, I'll listen to you... Even if you take all day... I'll be with you. Here's your gummy."
All of a sudden, the boy burst into tears, whimpering and quietly sniffing, making you start having a panic attack. You have never, ever comforted anyone in your life, ever. You were the crybaby that they comforted. So... what are you going to do now?
"P-Please... don't cry..." You whimpered, slowly feeling the familiar waterworks coming up. "U-um... Uh... I-I'm sorry...! I didn't mean to make you cry..!"
"...No..." He shook his head, using his free hand to wipe away his still flowing tears. He looked up at you, giving you a gentle smile. "...Thank you... For staying with me.."
You quietly gasped as a familiar feeling came back again. It was like that again, the time you became familiar with the Sano siblings and Baji, it was the same with a bit of a difference. This time... There was... a sense of wanting to protect this precious boy who was smiling despite being in so much pain, all because you were with him.
"...I promise." You sat up, moving closer to him and taking him on a hug, making sure to be gentle so as to not hurt him. "Don't worry, Tora, we'll be friends now... I won't abandon you... I'll take care of you."

You spent another two weeks with the boy, you made sure to free up your time during the promised hours to be there. You always brought bandaids, creams, cotton, tissue, water, and snacks for the two of you whenever you read.
He would tell you about his day and you would listen to him. Sometimes he would ask what you do, and you would tell him about the things you did at school. And at times, he would even help you with homework.
But after that, he stopped coming to the library.
You didn't know for what reason, but you hoped for the best for that boy. You didn't get to spend much time with him, but you considered him as a close friend.
But as years and years passed, that crying boy in your memory disappeared, never to be remembered ever again. You have forgotten everything that is to do with him, his face, his voice, his name... and even that feeling and the promise you made on the third day of your meeting.
Only after nine years... After nine years that familiar feeling came resurfacing when Baji introduced someone to the group.
A boy named Kazutora.
He appeared in front of you and felt that you had to take care of him and make sure that he won't cry again.
Because Kazutora reminded you of someone in pain you couldn't remember.

Perhaps that was why you didn't hate him. Even after he had killed the one you admired the most, you still didn't abandon him, because, in the end, that crying boy and Kazutora were one and the same.
