Chapter 4 (Newt's Pov)

Switching it up with Author's notes at the beginning because why not?

I really enjoyed writing this chapter. It makes me happy. I tried to write it like Newt would and I'm kind of satisfied with how it turned out. *its probably so off but*

I want to write both Pov's (Brianne's and Newt's) *maybe even Minho's at some point idk just an idea* Because I think it keeps things interesting. But most of the story will be written in Brianne's perspective.

Sorry if it seems like things are moving too quickly. I want to write a lot of details but I don't want to be stuck on the same part forever.

^haha I don't even know if that made any sense.

Oh well, I love all of you, and I hope you're having a good day/week/summer/August/year. Every view on this story means the world to me.

Talk to y'all soon!

~~Newt's Pov~~

I inhaled deeply, taking a good few seconds to breathe in the fresh air of the glade. Manure, trees, and sweat. A bloody lovely scent. It really grows on you.

"Think Nick will come after us with a shuckin' axe tonight?" I asked Minho jokingly as he bent down to re-tie the laces on his sneakers.

"I'll kick his butt so hard he'll klunk his pants if he tries."

"Sure ya' will, always gotta be the tough guy. Minho the Strong. Ya' know, that name has a pretty nice ring to it. I thinks that's what I'll call you from now on."

He brushed off my comment, "I'm so hungry, Frypan's 'food' might actually be appealing to me."

"Still not sure if what we consume is actually edible or not." We walked over to the kitchen, apparently having missed breakfast seeing there was no food out anymore.

"Shuck it, I'll take an apple." I said grabbing two. Minho did the same.

We left the kitchen and eventually found our way to a shady patch of grass underneath a tree.

I sat down, leaning my body back against the rough bark. I watched Stephan and Adam walk a couple trainee runners to the West Door of the Maze. They were taking Minho and I's positions as runners for the day. Nothing permanent. I guess I was just slightly relieved that others would be ready in case of emergency.

"Kinda nice, not having to do anything today." I wiped my forehead with my free hand, as I took a bite of my food.

"Sure, like you'd rather sit here and watch a couple shucking babies take our spots for the day. Real fun that is." Minho rolled his eyes dramatically.

"We're not gonna be here forever. Someone's gotta learn the runners secrets."

"What's that supposed to mean? Man, sometimes I worry about you, then other times I think you're just crazy," Minho looked at me, eyebrows raised.

I shrugged my shoulders, "Words just felt right."

"Well, if you meant that we're gonna find the exit out of this shuck place, then yah, I agree."

"I don't know. Just preparing for the unexpected. Life isn't all that generous when it comes to the time she gives out."

"Nobody's dying 'roud here, especially you. Come on. I mean, what would we do without our beautiful keeper." Minho laughed, throwing his apple core.

"You'd cry every darn day until my spirit appeared and slapped you bloody senseless for being girly."

"Alright, Newt, I'll be waiting for it." A pause. "So," Minho said dragging the word out, "Newbies kinda nice." He smirked at me, trying to provoke a reaction.

"Yah, I guess."

"I guess? Please, I saw your face when she was staring at you." Minho reached over to me and ran his hand through my hair, messing it up, "I think Newt wants a girlfriend."

"Ok, and Nick's become a real nice guy." I muttered sarcastically.

"Admit it, Newt. You kinda like her."

"Do not." The words came out fast. Too fast. Yah, the girl was cute, but I had enough things to think about, I didn't need anything else to be added to the list.

"I highly doubt that."

I rolled my eyes, "Goodness, wanna ask anything else ya' piece of klunk."

"You stopped denying it." Minho smirked at me.

"I like her, okay?" I spewed the words out. Where did that come from?

"What?"

"I-I don't know." I stammered. Why did I say that? I don't even know her. My thoughts weren't making much sense right now.

My eyes slowly made their way back to Minho. He sat there with a huge smirk on his face, looking creepier than a bloody griever.

"I knew it! Newt has a crush!" He shouted until I covered his mouth with my hand.

"You, slinthead, Can't keep a secret for two seconds."

"So this is a secret."

"Hardly. Barely even valid." I rolled my eyes.

"Okay, I get it. My lips are sealed."

"Alright, Minho, go ahead and keep nonexistent secrets a secret." I laughed, "If we wanna talk crushes, can we at least bring up the liking you've taken to Victoria?"

"That's such a force. I mean theres no need to make things up now."

"I'm not makin' things up, any idiot could see you like her." I chuckled, picking at a piece of grass, "Instead of starting rumors about me and the newbie why don't you-"

He cut me off, "Dibs." He said loudly.

"What?" I asked giving him a weird look.

"I call dibs on the newbie, Brianne." Minho said proudly, "Ha!"

"Would you quiet down," For some odd reason anger coursed through me, "But no, that's not fair. You can't do that."

"Just did." He crossed his arms over his chest, standing up.

I stood too, following him as he strutted away, "We'll see who she likes once she really talks to us." I smirked.

"I thought you didn't like her." Minho laughed, pointing out my lies.

"I thought we were past this, but when did you start liking her?"

"About a minute ago." He tapped his chin.

"You don't like her, you just think she's hot."

Minho rolled his eyes, "Whatever, I just don't get why you're being all defensive."

I sighed running my hand through my overgrown hair. "I don't know, she just seems familiar to me."

Minho grabbed me by the shoulders, "Familiar? Are you okay today?"

"Yah, familiar, like I've seen her before." He let go of me, "But don't go telling Nick. He'll interrogate me for months and then throw me in jail once he's through with his questions."

"I won't, I mean, please, he hates my guts just as much as I hate his."

"Alright, so what do I do?" I rocked back and forth awkwardly on my heels, "Do I talk to her about it?"

"You're asking me," He raised his eyebrows, "For advice? That's it we need a medjack. Newt do you have a fever-"

"Of course, I'm askin' you, ya shuck face. Now help me."

"Yah, talk to her, but don't freak her out," He chuckled, punching my arm lightly, "My dibs are still valid though. Remember that when you seduce her with your great personality."

I rolled my eyes. Minho was a real pain in the butt sometimes.

"First one to get kicked out of the barn by Winston wins." Minho said randomly, holding his hand out for me to shake.

"No way. Remember the last time you messed with a Keeper?"

"Me? Messing with someone?" He put his hand over his chest in mock surprise.

"The whole bloody council had to have a meeting about throwing you in the slammer, all because you wanted to chuck tomatoes at Frypan."

"But, you got me out of it." He smiled innocently, "That's why you're a Keeper. The best Keeper, to be exact."

"Alright save all your flattering comments, for another time," I crossed my arms over my body.

Minho held his hand out again, "What do ya say, Newt? Loser gives up half his dinner?"

"You have yourself a deal."

Two hours of kicking chickens, throwing hay, running around stables, and throwing axes later, Winston got fed up and told both of us to leave, promising to rat us out to Nick or Alby.

Ps: He never told on us.
