Chapter 5
Natsu wasn't the only gentleman attending that cabaret with no interest in bedding the women there. Gray had come to Fairy Tail seeking out a specific group of targets he had been asked to eliminate. His targets were common visitors of Fairy Tail so he himself was a common visitor but he paid the women little mind and was lured here mostly for the alcohol or so he would have everyone believe. You see Gray knew for a fact that in this day and age, everybody was always looking for skeletons in a man's closet and Gray decided that if he wanted to keep his identity as a vigilante a secret then he wouldn't keep people from finding skeletons in his closet. He would give them a fake skeleton to find.
In other words he created the illusion that he was an alcoholic. That he abused the bottle to cope with the loss of his family. He would purchase large quantities of alcohol but not to drink, he instead would use it to clean his hands, weapons, and clothes of blood that he sustained from his secret job. Which was even more brilliant because when people smelled the faded alcohol on his clothes, it sold the illusion even better. The only one knew about it was Cana the club's waitress.
Now she didn't know that he was a serial killer but she was such a great booze hound, that she could tell the difference between a real drunkard and a fake one if the real one bathed in lavender soap and the fake one had been drenched in hooch. Yet despite her curiosity, she never questioned Gray about his reasons for faking alcoholism and that's one of the reasons why they were such good friends. She never asked questions and she never pried into his private life.
"Hello Gray." She greeted in a friendly manner. "Haven't seen you here in a long time. Can I interest you in a cigar or a cigarette?"
"Cana you know I don't smoke."
"Yeah and I know you don't drink either but you still by five drinks only to pour four of them into a potted plant."
"Touche. Still no thanks."
"And I'm guessing you're not going to pay for a night with a can-can girl?"
"Do I ever?"
"You barely stay long enough to even watch them. In fact you're typically gone after the Diamond Star and her girls finish their dance. How come you're staying later than usual?"
"Let's just say what am I'm looking for here has yet to show up."
"Well in that case, enjoy seeing something new tonight."
"What's new? More scantily clad girls trying to give fat cats a lap dance?"
"Not exactly. You'll finally get to see the Rain Angel."
"The what?"
"Oh that's right, you've probably never heard of her. She's the best singer at the club here and she has a reputation for being 'an angel in a human body.' Or at least that's how she's introduced on stage."
"An angel in a human body? That's a new one. What makes her so angelic?"
"Well for starters she's probably the whitest woman ever born in the South, she sings like a heavenly choir, and she has never known the pleasures of men."
"You mean she's a virgin?"
"Yep. The most desired virgin there ever was. Hundreds of men come here, wondering what it would be like to see her all natural and touch her."
"That's a crock. What kind of a virgin works in a night club?"
"I'm a virgin."
"Yes but your father owns the joint so of course you'd still be a virgin."
"Believe me Gray, once you see her you'll understand."
"I seriously doubt it."
"Oh? Well she's about to go on in the next two minutes. Prepare yourself."
Gray rolled his eyes and chuckled in disbelief before turning his attention toward the stage where Cana's father Gildarts would announce the next act.
"Ha-ha! So judging by your cheers, I'm correct to assume that you gentlemen enjoyed my Diamond Star and her entourage?" He said.
In response the crowd rapidly applauded and excitedly ranted.
"Good. You all have incredible tastes but I know that you all don't have the same kind of tastes. Jewels, nymphs, and succubi are quite bewitching and enticing but some prefer something more demure. More innocent. More gentle. So I now present to you a being that is impossible to find in any other club."
The lights proceeded to dim again.
"A radiant beauty who's as delicate as a rain drop. A lily white female who has never been tainted by male lust. A sacred virgin who entertains sinners like us. A singer who's voice could make even those in Heaven feel envy. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Rain Angel."
The curtains slow rose up and a spot light slowly shined on the performer. A hush fell over the crowd and some even held their breath. There she stood wearing a white outfit adorned with lace and feathers, consistent with a white corset and neckline. She was sleeveless but white opera gloves covered her arms, long white stockings were upon her legs, a sheer lace wrap skirt was at her hips, and for shoes she wore matching white heels. Her mid-length blue hair was styled to be down in waves and strings of pearls had been placed upon her head. Indeed, her look was definitely an angelic one.
She slowly approached the microphone on the stage and waited patiently for the orchestra to play their song. When the moment arrived, she slowly opened her lips, and began to softly sing.
"Moon river, wider than a mile,
I'm crossing you in style some day.
Oh, dream maker, you heart breaker,
Wherever you're goin', I'm goin' your way."
Her voice was feathery, ethereal, lilting. A radiance hitherto unsuspected. With each word she sang, the more mesmerized the audience became. She was like a siren who's melody not only drew in men but women as well. And although the men marveled at her vocals, a lot of them they could not resisted studying her body and imagining running their fingers on her white, untouched, skin.
"Two drifters, off to see the world,
There's such a lot of world to see.
We're after the same rainbow's end,
Waitin' 'round the bend.
My huckleberry friend,
Moon river and me."
Gray tried not to be captivated. As much as he enjoyed good music and would recognize a woman's charms, neither one had been able to hold his attention very long. But there was something different about this young lady. Her innocent blue eyes expressed such a strong emotion of being gentle and shy. Her voice held no lust or seduction but sincere comfort and warmth. She was humbled by her beauty instead of proud. Her heart is what she used to charm those around her and for a moment Gray thought this Rain Angel had somehow touched his.
When her song finished the whole building went mad, rising to its feet, shouting, cheering, clapping, for her. She graciously blew kisses to show her gratitude and as she looked around to give each audience member a smile, her eyes momentarily locked with his. Don't ask me why out of all the people in that crowd, it was him she chose to share gazes with. Maybe it was a coincidence, maybe it was fate, by either way that one moment where they looked into each other's eyes was how it all started for them.
His cold, vengeful, dark eyes meeting her warm, forgiving, light eyes were all it took for an instant connection to form between them.
"What did I tell you?" Cana asked Gray. "A real angel, huh?"
"Huh?" He replied distracted. "Oh! Well she plays the part perfectly. I still can't believe she's some pure-hearted virgin."
"If you knew her you would. Maybe I could introduce you two some time?" She teased,
"Don't even joke about that. The last thing I need in my life is a working girl."
He took a sip of his drink and glanced over to finally catch one of his targets in his sights.
"Speaking of work, it's time for me to go to mine." He thought.
He then bought a bottle of chardonny to go and quietly slipped out the front door of the cabaret. But he wouldn't be going home just yet.
