Supergirl ~ Shelter From The Storm ~ Part Two

Most ridiculous, stressful week so far over, and the heating is finally fixed in the house. I celebrate by trying to finish this episode, and maybe I'll even try writing part three tomorrow. Who knows? All I know is after this, I'll only have four Supergirl episodes to write before the finales book and . . . oh, my God, only two Arrow ones before that book since "The Ties That Bind" will be in that book as well. O.O I'll only have six Supergirl and Arrow episodes left?! Guys, where did this time go?

Mon-El is concerned, Kara is worried, Oliver is a good fiancé, Malcolm is a good brother, Imra is a good wife, and have some ship teases to go with. It's a typical chapter from me with some good original content.

Enjoy part two!

***

Mon-El had a feeling that if he had started a timer some time ago, he would have found he'd been staring at Earth for at least two hours or so.

He'd looked at the planet so many times while on the Legion cruise, while on missions with his team in the future. Still, there was something about realizing he was leaving Earth, the Earth from his former present, again that made him fidget and wish he had something to do. I don't have anything from there anymore, he thought, a small frown on his face. He'd left Earth back then and left a girlfriend and friends behind. Now he was leaving behind the girl who'd grown to be his sister in arms, and Oliver was like another brother, one he never thought he would have. It's even harder to leave this time than last time, he realized.

"Ah, yes," a voice behind him startled him out of his stupor, and he quickly placed his hands in his pockets as Querl joined him in looking out at Earth. "This view is beautiful."

"How long till we reach the disruption?" Mon-El asked, ready for a distraction.

"Five hours, twenty-two minutes, sixteen seconds," Querl answered promptly. Mon-El sighed, then nodded, resolving himself for having to stare at the planet for even longer, then Querl stiffened next to him. "Oh," he said blankly. "That's a shame."

To someone who didn't know Coluans, Querl wasn't sincere. Mon-El knew otherwise. "What's a shame?" he asked, looking at his friend.

"I was calculating the odds of Supergirl, the Green Arrow, his team, and the D.E.O. defeating Reign now that her power has tripled," Querl answered.

"Tripled?" Mon-El repeated.

"It appears she absorbed the powers of Pestilence and Purity," Querl nodded.

Mon-El's head was reeling, and he shook his head, trying to come to terms with what he just heard. "Wait, how do you know this?"

"I bugged the D.E.O.," Querl admitted. "In the dirt I gave Winn." He snorted. "And he thinks he's a 1.42-level intellect."

"Why would you bug them?" Mon-El asked.

"I grew quite fond of Supergirl and her compatriots," Querl shrugged. "I wanted to keep tabs."

Mon-El steeled himself. "Tell me the odds."

"On their own, they have a 51% chance of success," Querl recited. "If they gain the aid of the Flash, Captain Lance, and their compatriots, that jumps to 62%. Ironically, if only one Legionnaire had stayed behind, their success rate jumps to 88.8%." Mon-El looked back out at Earth, processing his friend's words. "Technically, the odds are in their favor."

"Wait," Mon-El thought of something else. "But if Reign absorbed Pestilence's powers, then she could still become the Blight."

"Negative," Querl shook his head immediately. "I checked the vitals of our sleeping Legionnaires. No Blight, that's a certainty. The only certainty."

"We have to help them," Mon-El murmured.

"Supergirl's fight is not our fight," Querl said. "Besides, we have to get Imra home. Supergirl is stronger than any Legionnaire. I have faith in her."

Mon-El gritted his teeth. "So do I." That doesn't mean she couldn't use help. He caught sight of Imra watching the two of them, then shook his head. Focus. "I'm going to check the stasis chambers for re-entry into our time," he announced, walking past his wife, well aware of her eyes on his back as he went.

A pained noise from the bed next to J'onn made Kara look away from the Martian, and as Laurel looked up from J'onn's other side, Kara hastened to join Oliver by Patricia. "Patricia," she quietly called, sitting next to her. "Patricia?" The woman's eyes blearily opened, and Kara reached out, taking her hand. "Hey," she whispered. "Stay with us."

Patricia swallowed, looking at her. "When you see Sam," she said quietly. "You'll tell her that I'm sorry . . . that I should have held her close. And tell Ruby . . . tell her that her grandmother loved her." Kara bit her lip hard, nodding as Patricia cried. "Promise me!" the woman rasped.

"I promise," Kara nodded, squeezing her hand.

Patricia nodded, then her face twisted in pain and her head fell back on the pillow, her eyes closing. The monitors beeped a flatline, and Kara looked down at her hands, watching Patricia's go limp in her palm. She swallowed hard, bowing her head and crying at the loss of the adoptive mother of a friend, and Oliver quietly slipped an arm around her shoulders, pressing his lips to the top of her head supportively.

"I wonder what everyone thinks when the three of us get together," Max said in a cheerful tone as he walked into Lena's office at L-Corp.

"Oh, we're conquering the world, of course, and giving CatCo an exclusive about it as long as they don't go to the cops," Lena smirked sarcastically.

"You know, it's actually kind of terrifying that the two of you bounce off each other like that," James looked between the two of them warily.

"Well, good," Max sat down. "We need to terrify someone now that neither of our companies are in the villain business."

"I never was," Lena snorted.

"Potato, potato," Max shrugged, then raised an eyebrow when he saw Lucy look at her phone and stiffen. "What happened?"

Lucy sighed, looking up. "Patricia Arias is dead," she answered, rubbing her forehead. "And Reign killed her."

"Sam?" Lena blanched as James sighed and hung his head.

Lucy nodded miserably. "And she absorbed Purity and Pestilence's powers, so she's now more dangerous than ever."

Max quietly swore as Lena buried her face in her hands. "I guess we can plot to stop Reign instead of conquering the world," James looked between Lena and Max.

"Because we all know how well I do when I plot to take down a Kryptonian," Max looked at Lena.

Lena took a deep breath. "There's a formula Lex had in his archives on how to make Kryptonite," she admitted, making everyone in the room do a double take. "I had it in a bottle next to my bed. That's how I was able to get Reign to leave, I manufactured some that I could keep with me just in case."

"That's it," James gestured. "You can make Kryptonite that the D.E.O. can use against Reign!"

"But if I take it to the D.E.O., it's close to Kara," Lena argued, looking at him. "I can't hurt my best friend like that, James! I know how much it hurts her!"

"But it hurts Reign, too," James reminded her. "Lena, this is our world's biggest enemy right now, who happens to have the same weakness as Kara. You know she accepted using Kryptonite against Overgirl. It's the same thing here. She knows you would never intentionally hurt her. You are her ally in this, and you have something that can help her."

Lena swallowed hard, then nodded jerkily.

"War!" Evelyn and Ruby shouted at the same time gleefully as they flipped their cards over.

"You are just as obsessed with this game as these two are," Alex laughed, shaking her head as she watched the girls scramble for their cards.

"Oh, I'm playing you next," Ruby grinned at William.

"Bring it," William nodded eagerly.

"You'll beat him like I did easily," Evelyn giggled.

"You did not beat me!" William scoffed. "You cheated!"

"I did not cheat! I didn't even cheat when you went to talk to your dad!"

"Wait, when was this?" Alex blinked.

"Two weeks ago or so," William thought back, trying to think of something that wouldn't clue Ruby in. "You know, when that weird eclipse thing was going on."

"That was really weird," Ruby wrinkled her nose.

"Trust me," Alex put a hand on her shoulder, "that was weird even by my standards."

"And you work with Supergirl," William sniggered.

"Hey!" Alex pointed at him in mock anger, making Evelyn laugh. "You watch it, young man!"

William and Ruby burst out laughing, making Alex smile, happy Ruby's mind was off her mother. The smile was gone, though, when Slade looked around the corner, phone in hand. "Alex," he said in a tone that meant no nonsense. "A word."

Alex quickly stood up and headed after him, Slade stepping back so she could head into the living room first. She stood in front of the fireplace, looking at him as he said something into his phone, then walked to join her. "That was Oliver," he explained, walking over to join her.

"An update?" Alex asked hopefully.

"Not a good one," Slade said heavily. "Patricia Arias is dead. Reign killed her."

"Oh, my God," Alex balked, jaw dropping, and Slade quickly grabbed her arm, backing her up to the couch nearby. "That's horrible!"

"He and Kara are fine, and so are J'onn and Laurel," Slade continued. "J'onn and Kara are going to keep working on the alien level while Oliver and Laurel help Malcolm and John."

"Anything on that front?" Alex asked.

"Something worked very briefly on Reign, but not for long," Slade sighed. "I don't know how good of an answer that is."

Alex sighed, rubbing her forehead. "Oh, God."

"Alex?" Ruby appeared around the corner, and she and Slade looked up, seeing her worried face. "Is everything OK?"

"Yeah," Alex nodded quickly. "Yeah, Ruby, it's fine."

Ruby scowled, and Slade quickly held up a hand. "It was something Oliver called about," he said. "Nothing related to your mother."

Ruby bit her lip, still not looking convinced. "Hey," Alex stood up, forcing a smile on her face. "Why don't we go watch a movie? Mrs. Queller told me that they have Young Frankenstein, which just so happens to be one of my all-time favorite movies."

"You haven't shown me that one yet!" William's head poked around the corner.

"Great!" Alex took her cue and ran with it. "Let's go! I'm gonna go talk to Mrs. Queller, and she'll hook us up with popcorn and ice-cold soda and Gene Wilder. I mean, come on, this is gonna be amazing."

Ruby still looked unconvinced, but she nodded. "Now, come on!" Evelyn bounded into view. "The movie theater's this way!"

"Um, no," William shook his head. "Ruby showed us it was this way."

"William, I remember better than you!"

"No, you don't!"

"Yes, I do!"

"It's this way!" Ruby finally grabbed William's hand, tugging him in the direction between the two.

Evelyn scampered after them both, and Alex sighed, slumping where she stood and looking gratefully at Slade. "You are a lifesaver, you know that, right?"

He chuckled, patting her shoulder as they headed after the kids. "I'm just helping where I can."

Kara stared hard at where Patricia had been lying in the medbay, not even turning around when she heard familiar light footsteps behind her. "You couldn't have known Reign absorbed the powers of the other Worldkillers," Malcolm told her quietly.

"Barry noticed it," Kara said glumly. "The rest of us didn't, but that should have tipped us off."

"And what's happened since then?" Malcolm leaned against the glass next to her. "Hill, Armand, the impeachment, the Vertigo. You've had so much going on that hasn't been on this Earth, Kara. You did the best you could for Patricia."

"But it wasn't enough," Kara hung her head.

Malcolm sighed, rubbing her back. "And eventually, we find a way to live with that."

"Did that work after the Undertaking?" Kara bit out. Malcolm did a double take, a flash of hurt and his eyes, and Kara buried her face in her hands. "Malcolm, I'm sorry – "

"Not really," Malcolm sighed, shaking his head. "But I'm still here, aren't I?"

Kara conceded with a nod, looking up at him. "I'm sorry about that."

"You're worried about Sam and Ruby and Diaz and God only knows what else," Malcolm held out his arms, and Kara gratefully snuggled into him for a hug. "You're forgiven, almas."

Kara smiled, leaning against her brother, then frowned when J'onn walked up. "You should be resting."

"I need to be on my feet," J'onn shook his head. "Lying down is just so boring."

Kara sighed, closing her eyes. "I told Patricia I'd give a message to Sam, but I don't know if I'm ever gonna see Sam again," she mumbled, and Malcolm raised his hand to stroke her hair. "Even with everything I've learned from Mon-El, Reign has me outmatched on every level. How am I gonna fight her?"

"Usually, your secret weapon is your heart, Supergirl," J'onn answered after a moment. "But I didn't see even a glimpse of humanity left I Reign that you could reason with."

Kara tilted her head thoughtfully. "White Martians are as soulless as Reign," she mused. "When you battled them, were you ever able to get through to them?"

"Besides M'gann, no," J'onn shook his head. "But I just used my skills as a warrior, like you." Kara closed her eyes defeatedly, leaning more against Malcolm, then J'onn tilted his head. "But there was one amongst us who thought they could reason with them . . . and he did. He got them to spare his life."

***

"Father?" J'onn carefully approached M'yrnn at their home, Kara and Malcolm lingering behind him.

M'yrnn slowly turned to look at them, then he saw Kara and his face hardened. "Ursula, you should not have come," he glowered. "When I told Kemler I didn't agree with his position on the Eradicator project, I wasn't looking to be persuaded!"

Kara blinked, and Malcolm sighed. "That better not make me the Little Mermaid."

Kara giggled, patting him on the arm. "I'm sure Laurel would agree with me when I say you are definitely more of a Prince Eric."

Malcolm grinned smugly at the compliment, even as J'onn gave them a warning look. "Father, this is not Ursula. This is Kara, my friend, and her brother, Malcolm."

"Of course, you are," M'yrnn nodded in remembrance.

"We came because we could use your help."

"I'm of no help to any being," M'yrnn shook his head. "Please leave me be."

"Father, I just need to," J'onn began.

"I said no, J'onn!" he snapped.

Kara and Malcolm exchanged worried glances, and J'onn sighed, walking forward and crouching in front of him. "Dad, look, I know you cannot journey through your mind like you once did, I know that. But your memories are still intact. None of it has been lost since you've been doing the Ta'ar Ka'riq. You just need help to access it."

"I can do nothing for you," M'yrnn shook his head. "I've had enough failure."

J'onn gritted his teeth and stood up in frustration, walking around the couch. Kara cleared her throat, walking forward tentatively. "Um, J'onn told me that when the Greens chose to fight the Whites, you pleaded with those in charge to have open talks," she sat down by M'yrnn. "Is that right?" M'yrnn thought for a moment, then nodded. "Everyone else just saw their aggression, but you saw something you could reason with. What was it?"

M'yrnn shook his head. "I don't remember."

Malcolm saw J'onn suddenly morph, and instead of his Green Martian form, he was suddenly much taller and a different color. "Father," J'onn said.

Whoa," Malcolm's eyes widened. "So that's – ?"

"A White Martian," Kara nodded. "Yeah."

When M'yrnn looked up, he blanched. "Do not play tricks on me!"

"Just look at me in this form, Father!" J'onn said. "Like you did when you saw Ursula. You remembered exactly your past conversation. Now look at me and tell me why you think you can get through to me!"

"Get through to you?" M'yrnn repeated, then barked in laughter as he stood. "You're as stubborn and righteous as Phobos. I can't persuade you of anything you don't already believe in."

Kara stood up, taking her chance. "Whites kept you alive. Why?"

"Because I knew that the sacred scrolls were important to them," M'yrnn answered promptly. "And inside my mind, I held all the knowledge and secrets of those scrolls."

"And if they killed you, that knowledge would be lost to them forever," Kara nodded slowly.

"You appealed to their beliefs," Malcolm put it together, stepping forward. "You appealed to their code, just like Oliver did, appealing to the League of Assassins' code when he had to."

"And Reign has been pretty clear about her code of justice," Kara grinned.

J'onn morphed back into his human form, smiling widely as he walked up to M'yrnn. "Father, you might just have saved us today."

M'yrnn blinked in honest surprise. "I have?"

Kara and Malcolm laughed as J'onn chuckled proudly. "You have."

"We're approaching the disruption," Querl announced.

Malcolm nodded absently, continuing his worried pacing, only stopping when Imra cautiously approached. "Mon-El," she said. "You need to go back."

"What?" he looked up in surprise, stunned Imra was suggesting it more than anything. "No. No, despite Brainy's odds, I'm sure they'll find a way to defeat Reign. I'm going with you to the future. We're near there."

"You're saying that because you think it's what you need to do for me, out of duty," Imra shook her head. "But this time needs you, Mon-El. You need to help them. And you need to go back so you can put your heart at ease."

"I'm with you, Imra," Mon-El insisted.

"I risked our lives and our marriage to stop Pestilence," Imra told him. "I still believe it was worth it. I hoped that once we left, you'd put your feelings behind you."

Mon-El balked, wondering if Imra really believed that was what he was thinking of. "Imra, not once since I learned of Kara and Oliver have I – "

"You've done nothing wrong," Imra assured him quickly. "You never did anything like that. You behaved honorably."

"You must know that I would never do anything to dishonor you," Mon-El whispered.

"I know," Imra put a hand on his cheek. "And I know you have chosen me. But I know how it feels to leave those you care about behind. I'm returning to those I care about the most now, but I'm leaving friends in this time as well, including someone who is like another sister to me. But you? This was your time once, and you are leaving them – your family – again." Mon-El closed his eyes, nodding miserably. "Go back," Imra insisted. "Help them fight Reign. If you stay, then that's your destiny. If you return, you will always be welcome in my time."

Mon-El slumped in relief, turning his head and kissing Imra's palm. "Thank you," he whispered.

Imra smiled and nodded. "Give them our best."

Mon-El nodded back, giving her a quick kiss and rushing out the door, Imra watching him go with a fond smile.

"You know, I wonder if we should just get every speedster we know and somehow find a way to collect their lightning," Laurel mused, she and Dig looking through the D.E.O.'s inventory. "That's got to be enough to take down Reign, right?"

"I'm pretty sure when the Dominators invaded, Barry tried a lightning strike against Kara," Dig told her. "Didn't do a thing."

"Damn it," Laurel sighed.

A throat cleared behind them, and they turned to see Lena, Max, and Lucy walked in, Lena holding a case. "I've got something that may," she said.

"Oh," Laurel tilted her head. "Well, the others just – " There was a whoosh of wind, and Laurel closed her eyes as suddenly J'onn, Kara, and Malcolm were back in the room. "You know what? Never mind."

"Oh, what?" Malcolm grinned, sauntering over to her. "Did we steal your moment?"

"More like my words," Laurel griped, though she leaned against him when he slid an arm around her waist. "Missed you."

"Missed you, too."

"Aww," Dig smirked.

"Shut up," Laurel half-heartedly swatted at him.

"How'd it go with your father?" Oliver asked as he came down the stairs, checking things over on a tablet.

"We have an idea," J'onn nodded.

"And I've got a weapon," Lena held up her case. "Please don't worry about it, it's in a lead-lined case."

Kara paused, looking long and hard at the case. "It's lead-lined."

"Yes," Lena nodded.

Kara swallowed hard. "Is that Kryptonite?"

"For one reason only," Lena nodded. "To help you fight Reign."

Kara let out her breath shakily. "I know you said Lex had a formula to make it . . . but to know it actually works . . . "

"Kara, I swear, this formula is staying with me and I'm never going to even think about giving it to someone else," Lena let out in a rush.

"I never even got a peek at it," Max added helpfully.

"Because you have such a shining record with Kryptonians," Lucy snorted.

"As I have mentioned before!"

Kara slowly walked over to Lena, eyeing the case as if it could blow up any second. She finally extended her hands, and Lena handed it over to her. Kara carefully held it, looking more relaxed now that she was holding the case and nothing was happening to her. "It's yours?" she clarified again.

"It's mine," Lena nodded. "And I supercharged it just for Reign."

Kara gulped, nodding. "Guess I shouldn't be holding it when we use it, then."

"I didn't want to make it because it could hurt you," Lena told her. "That's the exact reason I gave."

"But we needed it at first to fight Overgirl," Kara took a deep breath, seeming like she was telling herself that. "We need this for Reign." She looked at Lena, biting her lip. "Thank you."

"You're welcome," Lena nodded, a worried look in her eye. "Still friends?"

"When did we stop being them?" Kara smiled.

Lena smiled in relief. "So do we still need to do an inventory?" Dig looked at J'onn.

"I think we have what we need now," J'onn shook his head.

Oliver found Kara in one of the conference rooms later, still staring at the case of Kryptonite on the table. "You know," he said in a light tone, "you actually need to use your heat vision if you want to stare at it and set it on fire."

Kara didn't look at him. "Have I ever told you?" she asked. "Have I ever actually told you what Kryptonite feels like to me?"

Oliver sighed, closing the door behind him and walking over to sit next to her. "I've only been able to imagine, seeing you affected."

Kara swallowed hard. "I walk into a room, and I feel like my skin is going to be seared off my bones," she said in a small voice. "I walk into a room, and it feels like nails are running through my blood."

Oliver cringed just listening to it. "And you were around that day after day when you were held by Cadmus," he said, anger in his voice.

"I was," Kara nodded, biting her lip. "I was around pounds of it, maybe even tons. I'm terrified of it." She eyed the case. "But this . . . supercharged Kryptonite . . . it's probably the only thing we have that can subdue Reign."

Oliver scooted closer. "There are times I wonder what it's like to be so terrified of one simple thing," he admitted, making her look at him. "Then I think . . . there are thousands of things that can kill us simple humans. There's fire, but we don't ban bonfires or candles. And cars can kill people every day, but we still use them." He spread his hands, looking at the case on the table. "Then I remember there's only one element on this planet that can kill you and your cousin, and it terrifies you because it is so lethal that even encountering it by mistake could kill you."

"It's awful," Kara said, her voice trembling. "I want it gone. But that's not realistic. I can't make it be gone. I think about the Kryptonians who have tried to take over Earth before. I think about how Clark and I have been affected by Red and Silver Kryptonite, and if we can't fight, how can mere humans protect themselves? I think about Overgirl . . . and I think how terrible I would be if I was the only one in control of this. Would I even be able to make the best decisions on how to manage it?" She shook her head, burying her face in her hands. "It scares me to think about that."

"You think about it, and you decide to be better than that," Oliver hugged her. "That's what makes you who you are. That's what makes you strong. You aren't a god, Kara."

Kara cringed. "Overgirl said I should be."

"Overgirl was a Nazi who wanted to take the one thing from you that makes you the best Kara in the multiverse," Oliver deadpanned. "And she's dead, so where did being a god get her?"

Kara giggled. "Solar radiation poisoning and a nuclear explosion."

"Exactly. And you aren't anywhere near that, so I say you win."

Kara laughed that time, curling up into Oliver. "I love you," she declared, looking up at him. "Have I told you that?"

Oliver pretended to think. "Not today."

Kara moved to sit on his lap, then kissed him. "I love you."

Oliver smiled against her lips, one hand sliding into her hair as the other one wrapped around her waist. "I love you, too."

William and Evelyn were scouring the theater to find the movie they wanted, and Ruby could see Slade bent over the projector, Alex pointing out things for him to try. Ruby bit her lip, eyeing where William and Evelyn had tossed their phones, then picked one at random and rushed out of the room as quickly as she could, making a beeline for outside.

When she was able to take a deep breath of fresh air, she clicked on the phone app, dialed her home phone number, and raised it to her ear. "Hi, you've reached the voicemail of Sam and Ruby," the message they had come up with together sounded, and Ruby swallowed, hearing how happy they sounded. "We can't get to the phone, so leave us a message!"

"Mom, please pick up," she begged. "I need to see you. Where are you?"

***

"I just wanna talk to you. Please pick up or come get me. I need to see you. Please pick up!"

Reign's eyes flew open as she hovered above National City, and with a smirk of triumph, she dove through the sky, following Ruby's voice.

Finally, she knew where the human girl was.

I was looking at how many individual videos were left to try and write the rest of the episode (I watch Supergirl S3 on YouTube and they're in chunks), and I was wondering "how the hell am I going to make the word count from the first chapter?"

This lesson must get drilled into my head: "Never underestimate the power of original content."

Anyway, more ship teases! I really enjoyed writing Alex/Slade in the "Seven Years" one-shot, and the general consensus when I asked on my message board was that fans were pretty onboard with the two of them becoming a couple here, too. Alex's sexuality would be the same as it is in that one shot (there's many more crackships in that oneshot, too, if you want to see just how ridiculous my mind can be sometimes), but if I lose readers over this, I understand.

Speaking of checking things out, my obsessions have also led me to making a story about the One Chicago and Law & Order: SVU universe with the MCU, which I am super excited to start reading, so if anyone is a fan of one of those fandoms or more, I would love if you would give the basics of the book a read.

Anyway, just one part left to go with this episode! And the big question for you to ponder . . . what's going to happen with Ruby?

Tune in some time soon to find out!
