Supergirl ~ Not Kansas ~ Part One

Kara tells Alex something important after the Earth-X wedding, Mon-El asks a favor, and James finds himself in a bit of a pickle. Also, I'm declaring that soundtrack linked in here (even though it's Reign's theme) the Kariver theme because it's gorgeous and I really can't help but think of them when I hear it.

Enjoy!

"Oh, my God," Alex rolled out her neck as she collapsed back on Kara's sofa, her sister giggling maniacally as she poured glasses of wine for them both. "My feet are killing me."

"And you thought you could outdance me?" Kara really laughed then.

"Yes," Alex mockingly glared at her. "I haven't danced the Macarena in years!"

"Are you kidding?" Kara laughed as she joined Alex, both of them kicking off their heeled sandals. "That was my favorite dance when we were kids!"

"True," Alex said grudgingly as she accepted her glass. "But I can still do a killer Cupid Shuffle."

Kara nodded in agreement. "To Leo and Ray."

"To Leo and Ray," Alex agreed, clinking her glass with hers.

For once, the wedding on Earth-X had gone off without a hitch, unlike poor Barry and Iris's. Ray and Leo had made a beautiful couple, and for once, everyone they had seen on Earth-X had smiles on their faces. Mick had looked ready to burn Ray's uncle to a crisp via his new totem, but Amaya had somehow managed to keep him in line while Nate, Ray, and Wally attempted to teach Zari some of the dances they were doing. Kara and Sara had ultimately been the best dancers of them all, including the Macarena. They probably could have continued had they all not had to return to their respective Earths.

Oliver had gone to make sure everything was settled on Earth-1 with his team, and Kara and Alex had ultimately ended up in her loft. Kara had been full of energy since they had come back, and Alex knew it wasn't because of the wedding they had just attended. "You're going back to Argo," she finally said.

Kara closed her eyes and lowered her wine glass. "As soon as Oliver and William can come with me, yes," she nodded.

Alex swallowed and nodded. "OK."

"God, I still can't believe it," Kara threw her head back on the couch. "It felt so much like home, but National City is home, too, and I just . . . "

"How long do you think you'll be gone?" Alex asked.

"I don't know," Kara closed her eyes. "I feel guilty, I feel . . . selfish."

"Kara," Alex reached out and put a hand on her shoulder. "Argo is where you were born, it's where you grew up. There is nothing selfish at all about going back there. Is it sudden? Yes, but given everything that has happened to you, and to Oliver, this past year . . . hell, everything that has happened your entire lives, this vacation may be exactly what you need. You and Oliver have spent your entire vigilante lives taking care of others. Take care of yourselves, too." Kara nodded, taking a deep breath, and Alex cracked a grin. "But selfishly, I don't know what I'm gonna do with you gone."

Kara giggled. "If your last few adventures without me are anything to go by, you and Slade will find trouble somewhere."

"Kara!" Alex protested, cheeks flushing as she smacked her sister with a pillow.

Kara fell against Alex, laughing loudly. "Besides, when you went away to college, we figured that out!"

"Yeah," Alex smiled, picking at the flyaway hairs that had come out of Kara's bun. "I mean, we called and e-mailed every day. What's Wi-Fi like in space?"

Kara tilted her head. "Interdimensional chatroom," she reminded Alex.

"Right," Alex snickered. "Just ask Cisco."

Kara giggled in agreement.

"Someone looks excited," Mon-El noted as he joined Kara on the walkway at the D.E.O.

"Who, me or William?" Kara smiled widely as she watched William wave his hands animatedly as he talked to Ruby and Evelyn, both girls wide-eyed as he told them about where they were going. "Honestly, neither can I. It's gonna be really hard to be away from everyone."

"It's where you were born and raised initially," Mon-El reminded her.

"Yeah," Kara nodded in agreement.

"Not trying to steal my fiancée, are you?" Oliver suddenly appeared on Kara's other side, making her yelp.

Mon-El laughed, holding his hands up. "No stealing," he promised. "I am not risking the wrath of your three devils."

"My three devils?" Oliver parroted.

"Otherwise known as Slade, Malcolm, and Laurel," Kara grinned.

Oliver grumbled under his breath. "They are not my devils."

"They kind of are," Mon-El snickered.

Oliver sighed, shaking his head. "Devils? Maybe. They're not mine."

"You keep telling yourself that, buddy."

Kara sighed happily. "I'm going to miss this when you go back to the future."

"Me, too," Mon-El agreed. "Thanks for giving me another chance."

"I'm glad I calmed down enough to give you one," Oliver smiled at the Daxamite.

"Thank you for everything," Kara told him. "For coming back in, and helping, and being part of the team. It's really meant a lot to me."

"Yeah, well," Mon-El grinned. "A while ago, someone pretty great taught me how to be a hero."

Oliver smiled, wrapping his arm around Kara. "She didn't do a bad job."

Kara blushed, making Mon-El laugh. "You and William ready?" she asked, trying to change the subject.

"To visit my fiancée's home city where I'll probably be under a microscope the entire time I'm there, and the only one I'll know for certain is you?" Oliver sighed. "As ready as I'll ever be, angel."

"Oh, you'll love it," Kara smacked him in the arm playfully. "My mom hasn't even met you, and I think she's already ready to adopt you."

"Oh, boy," Oliver mumbled.

Mon-El laughed. "You'll do just fine, Oliver. I'm a Daxamite, and considering the bad blood that used to exist between Daxam and Krypton, I was treated with respect."

"Well, that is reassuring," Oliver admitted.

Mon-El patted his arm. "Hey, uh, while you're on Argo, would you do me a favor?" Kara nodded. "They have artificial gravity there, which means they have some sort of synthetic gravity manipulator. And since gravity can bend space-time, you can use it to send a beacon into the future, and let the Legion know they can come back and get me."

"On one condition," Kara held up her hand. Mon-El raised an eyebrow. "You are telling Imra and Brainy neither of them can go back to the future without staying for our wedding."

Mon-El laughed and nodded. "Yeah, I think I can do that."

"Awesome," Kara beamed.

"Dad! Kara!" The three peered over the balcony to see William waving up at them. Ruby and Evelyn had vanished for some reason. "When are we leaving?"

"Think he's excited?" Oliver rolled his eyes fondly.

"Oh, like you aren't," Kara tugged on his hand to lead him down the stairs.

"OK, yes, I am," Oliver confessed, tucking Kara's hand into his elbow as they walked down, Kara taking the opportunity to lean against him. "Your excitement is contagious."

"I'm just so glad you're coming with me," Kara smiled up at him. "You, and William."

"Kara, I'd follow you anywhere," Oliver smiled back down. "You know, as long as I'm capable of breathing wherever we are."

Kara leaned up and kissed him. "And that is one of the many reasons why I love you."

They finally made it down the stairs and were assaulted by Ruby and Evelyn with confetti. "Surprise!" they cheered, along with everyone else in the D.E.O.

"The man and woman of the hour!" Winn whooped, throwing his hands up in excitement and displaying the decorations around the area.

Kara burst out laughing as Oliver shook his head fondly, both of them seeing the other members of their teams around. "You guys did not have to do this!"

"Oh, come on," James snorted. "Did you think we were gonna send you off on your outer space vacation without the right send-off?"

"Did you help them?" Oliver playfully glared at Mon-El and William.

"Eh, maybe I was supposed to distract you," Mon-El shrugged innocently.

"Yes," William grinned.

Oliver rolled his eyes, hugging his son close to him. "You're spending too much time with Malcolm."

"I resent that remark," the assassin glared over his champagne flute.

"Well, you'll have a few days of no me, so enjoy it," Oliver smirked.

"Whatever will he do instead, I wonder?" Slade snickered.

Malcolm aimed a smack on the back of Slade's head, though the former mercenary ducked under him. "Shut up, Slade."

"You've really never had a vacation before?" Ruby asked Kara curiously as they walked to join everyone else, Sam and Lena joining them with Alex.

"Not really, no," Kara shook her head. "Not since I became Supergirl, anyway."

"Basically the same with me," Oliver nodded. "There was some time I took with Felicity before I came back and officially became the Green Arrow, but other than that . . . nothing."

"Well, enjoy it, Oliver," Dig clapped a hand on his shoulder.

"Yeah, we'll handle everything for you, Hoss," Rene agreed.

"Oh, great," Oliver groaned playfully. "That reassures me so much."

"Hey!" Curtis protested, even as Laurel threw back her head and laughed. "I resent that remark!"

Before more bickering could happen, the sound of silverware on glass quieted everyone down. J'onn stepped forward from where he stood with Lucy, and Dig, Alex, and Winn passed Oliver, Kara, and Mon-El glasses while Evelyn handed William another glass of sparkling grape juice. "There's only one Supergirl and Green Arrow, but we will all do our best to channel your spirits in your honor, protect National City and Star City with pride, and make you proud," the Martian promised.

Oliver and Kara raised their glasses in response, then Rene grinned mischievously. "Toast!" he called out.

"Toast!" Max agreed.

Oliver immediately shook his head. "I've done enough speeches for now," he held up his free hand.

"Come on, Supergirl!" Lena pitched in.

"Oh, come on!" Kara buried her face in her hand.

"Yeah, come on, make a speech!" Winn agreed.

"Speech!" Felicity led the rolling chant.

Kara finally waved everyone off, giggling. "I think this is why I haven't taken a vacation before," she looked around. "I'm really gonna miss everyone, even if it's a few days. This world was so foreign and terrifying, but over the years, I've learned to feel safe here. It's an honor protecting this planet and being protected by it, and I owe all of that to you."

"Hear, hear!" J'onn raised his glass.

Kara smiled, looking around at James and Winn. "You are my friends who understand me, and make me laugh." Her gaze continued to J'onn and Lucy. "You are my role models, who have built me into a leader and shown me what it means to find fulfillment in the work we do." Next was Alex, standing with Lena and Sam. "This world has given me a family . . . both worlds have given me a family," she amended, taking Oliver's hand as she looked at Team Arrow, who had mingled seamlessly with the D.E.O. agents as if they belonged there. "I'm taking this chance to revisit my home, my first home, with the man I plan to spend the rest of my life with and his son." William beamed up at Kara and Oliver squeezed her hand, and Kara smiled as Oliver kissed her temple. "I'm bringing you all with me in my heart," she promised. "And I'm at peace knowing all of you'll be holding down the fort here and in Star City until we're back. And this is not goodbye. It's 'see you on the flipside.' Or, as we say on Krypton, kau shaa." She looked down at William. "What's that mean?" she quizzed.

"To be continued," he answered immediately.

Kara nodded in confirmation. "To be continued."

***

Much of their flight on the Waverider had been in the temporal zone or in the sky above Central City, he hadn't looked outside when Nate had rescued them from the Dominators' ship, and he had been too focused on Kara to see where they had been while on the Legion cruiser.

Oliver wasn't the only one who found himself looking out of J'onn's ship as Kara expertly piloted through space. "This is so cool!" William gushed, hardly able to stay still in his seat.

Kara laughed. "I'm glad you're enjoying, William."

"Do you not like it?" William tilted his head.

"Well," Kara considered. "I had claustrophobia for a while after my time in the Phantom Zone, but I always loved looking up at the stars. I think if I was outside, I would feel better."

Oliver looked around the tiny spaceship. "Sorry we're cramping you, angel."

"Don't be sorry," Kara assured him, adjusting their course. "We're almost there."

William's eyes bugged wide. "Whoa! Dad, look!"

Oliver turned to see out the front, and his eyes, too, widened when he saw the glittering buildings with a shimmering shield on the asteroid in front of them, glowing bolts of green appearing in the rock. "Oh, my God," he instinctively leaned forward, knowing he would be blocked by the ship. "That's – ?"

"Yeah," Kara's grin widened. "That's Krypton."

William's eyes almost popped out of his head as he looked over Oliver's shoulder. "Wow," he whispered.

Kara piloted the ship through the shield and towards an open, grassy area just outside of the city. Oliver could already see two figures coming from the city to greet them: one was a dark-skinned woman in white, and she was going at a much more relaxed pace. The woman in blue with dark hair and her eyes towards the sky was going much faster, and judging by the smile on her face, Oliver could guess who she was.

By the time Kara landed the craft, the women were only a few yards away, both with eyes on them. "I'm starting to think maybe I shouldn't have worn my suit," Oliver looked himself over as they exited the ship.

"I wore mine," Kara pointed out.

"Yeah, which has your family crest on it."

William looked himself over in his T-shirt, jacket, and jeans. "I'm definitely underdressed."

Kara giggled, giving him a quick hug. "You're perfect, Will."

As the three walked away from the ship, the two other women approached. "It's so good to have you back, Kara Zor-El," the woman in white smiled.

"It's good to be back," Kara smiled in return.

Then the woman in blue stepped forward, Kara's smile on her face. Oliver never second guessed who she was; his confirmation was in the same S crest she wore on her dress that Kara's suit proudly displayed. "Welcome home," Alura Zor-El greeted warmly, arms outstretched.

Kara melted into her mother's arms, smiling and burying her face in her neck. Oliver couldn't have kept a smile off his face if he tried, Kara looked so relieved to be able to hug her mother again. After a few seconds, though, Kara pulled back. "Mom, Selena," she took a deep breath, taking Alura's hand and turning towards Oliver and William. "This is – "

"This is Oliver and William," Alura finished for her, stepping forward with a bright smile. "Welcome to Argo, both of you."

"Thank you," Oliver smiled back, looking at Kara. "It's an honor to see what remains of Kara's home planet."

"And I'm glad to meet both of you at last," Alura looked between them. "Thank you so much for everything you have done for my daughter."

Oliver chuckled. "She helped us first."

"Oh, not this again," Kara pinched the bridge of her nose.

Alura's laugh sounded like bells as she stepped forward and put her hands on Oliver's shoulders. "And welcome to the family," she added sincerely.

Oliver swallowed hard, feeling a weight off his shoulders. Kara had been right; Alura was far more welcoming than he had imagined she would be. "Thank you," he said gratefully, accepting the hug the woman gave him.

When Alura stepped back and looked at William, she gave him a proud smile. "And you, William," she crouched down so she was the same height as him, "I am very happy to meet as well."

"I'm happy to meet you, too," William smiled shyly at her. "I know Kara really missed you, and her home. I'm glad she has you again."

Kara blushed at his words. "And I'm glad she has you and your father," Alura smiled, opening her arms. William accepted her hug without hesitation, making Kara beam happily at Oliver. "Welcome to the family," she whispered to him.

William's smile could have powered the city without Harun-El. "It's nice to be part of your family."

Alura's laughter was louder that time, and when she stood up, she turned to Kara and declared, "I approve."

"Thanks, Mom," Kara grinned, reaching out and taking Oliver's hand. "I do, too."

***

The house Alura had in the city felt very homey yet at the same time as if it could have been in the woods. Wood and stone and plants were everywhere Oliver looked, and he explored the main floor with interest. He certainly felt much more comfortable in his dark green shirt and pants than he had in his Green Arrow suit, especially since he was in Alura's house . . . his soon-to-be mother-in-law's house. That was still shocking to think about.

"This is confusing," William declared, and Oliver turned from the Dar-Essa plant he recognized from the sapling Kara had brought back to National City.

His son was in similar clothes to him, though his were dove grey, which almost matched the chrome ball he was twisting around. "What is it?" he walked over.

"I think it's the Kryptonian version of a Rubik's Cube?" William twisted it to and fro. "I really don't know."

Kara suddenly gasped from the bench she was on, and father and son turned together to see the blonde, now in a draping dress of various shades of blue, pull a metal item from the box she was scouring through. "My certificate of Kanar-Onn!" she held it up gleefully.

"What's that?" William asked curiously.

"A Kryptonian rite of passage," Alura answered as she walked into the room, carrying a tray of drinks in her hands.

"Requiring hours and hours of studies of Kryptonian history," Kara elaborated with a huff.

Alura chuckled, stopping by Kara and offering her a glass. "You loved it! I would come home every day and find you pouring over books, rattling off new information you discovered."

"Really?" William looked at Kara in excitement.

"Thank you," Oliver nodded as he took a drink from Alura as well.

"OK," Kara conceded as William took a drink, too. "Maybe I was a bit of a nerd."

"Stubborn blondes who are extremely smart and vigilantes," Oliver thought out loud. "I have a type."

Kara blushed, making William snicker. "I hate you."

"No, you don't," Oliver chuckled, taking a drink of water.

Kara mumbled incoherently, but she ended with "No, I don't" before she took a sip.

The sound of a door shutting and footsteps on the ground made him look up from his cup, then a woman in a dove grey dress with dark copper hair ran into the room, eyes wide. "By Rao!" she breathed in awe, hurrying the rest of the way into the room towards Kara. "It's really you!"

Kara's eyes widened in shock, and she set her drink and certificate down to stand. "Thara?" she asked in disbelief.

"We all thought you were dead!" the woman, Thara, pulled Kara into a tight hug, the blonde laughing and hugging her back. "The ceremony broke my heart!" She pulled back, looking Kara up and down. "I can't believe my eyes!"

"Neither can I!" Kara shook her head, taking her hands. "Your parents, your brother?"

Thara's face fell, and she shook her head. "I'm the only one who survived."

Kara's shoulders slumped, and she squeezed her friend's hands. "I'm so sorry, Thara."

"I've recovered," Thara assured her. "And with you, it's a miracle. You've lived on another planet all these years . . . a planet where you can fly?"

"She can do more than that," William piped up.

"Will!" Oliver hissed.

Kara just laughed and nodded. "Yes, and more," she confirmed. "There's so much to tell you."

"We'll have to climb up onto the roof, fill each other in," Thara offered.

"I would love that," Kara nodded eagerly, then backed up. "Thara Ak-Var, this is Oliver Queen, my fiancé and the leader of his team on Earth. And this is his son, William."

"Hi," Thara offered her hand.

"Hi," Oliver nodded, shaking it. "We're . . . " He tilted his head side to side. "We help out the law when we can," he settled on.

"Usually more than they do," William mumbled his opinion.

Kara laughed as Oliver rolled his eyes. "Well, Thara is in law enforcement as well," Alura said. "She's Chief Peace Officer on Argo."

Oliver's eyes widened, and he respectfully nodded to her. "Times have been peaceful ever since we resettled, thanks to Alura and the work of the High Council," Thara tried to brush it off.

"Well, we all play our part, but Thara has really stepped up," Alura chuckled. "She knows the city like the back of her hand."

"Maybe you can help us find something for a friend of ours, Mon-El?" Kara asked. "A synthetic gravity manipulator?"

"There's a guy in the market who sells anything with a microchip," Thara nodded.

"Great," Oliver nodded. "That'd really help him."

"And after that, I'd love for you to meet my family," Thara smiled at Kara.

Kara's eyes widened. "Your family?" she sputtered.

"My husband, Lir-Al, and our two kids," Thara confirmed.

Kara laughed in shock. "OK, we really need to catch up!" she declared, taking Thara's hand and pulling her off, leaving her mother, Oliver, and William to watch her go with amusement.

Alex looked at the picture she had in her locker of herself and Kara at the latter's engagement celebration in Star City, then sighed and finished putting her D.E.O. gear inside. She knew Kara deserved to spend some time back on Argo, with her mom and Oliver and William, but it still felt so weird to not have her sister at the D.E.O. with her.

"That didn't sound very happy."

Alex yelped and swung her locker door shut, spinning around and finding Slade leaning against the opposite wall, an eyebrow raised. "What the hell was that for?" she gasped, putting a hand over her racing heart.

"I know you don't like being separated from your sister," Slade answered with a shrug. "I'm just making sure you're all right."

Alex sighed, sitting down on one of the benches. "Yeah, I don't like it. What gave it away, the frenzy I almost went into on Earth-X?"

"That's part of it," Slade nodded, sitting down on the other bench, the two facing each other. "But if you're anything like me, you don't like having your sibling so far out of contact range where there's something interfering with any chance they could contact us."

Alex smiled. "You're worried about Oliver."

Slade snorted. "With the trouble he always manages to find? Of course, I'm worried about Oliver. I'm also worried about Kara. No yellow sun – "

"Means no powers," Alex bit her lip.

Slade nodded. "But they have each other, and they've overcome some impossible odds before."

"Yeah," Alex nodded, rubbing the back of her head. "I just need to remember that."

"Then I'll keep reminding you," Slade smirked. "Deal?"

"Yeah, deal," Alex laughed, nodding as he stood. "By the way, aren't you supposed to be in Star City?"

"I think one fielder missing when there's plenty of others capable of defending the city will be fine," Slade held out his hand to her. "Besides, Kara asked me to keep an eye on you."

"On me?" Alex raised an eyebrow dubiously, even as she accepted Slade's hand up.

"Did I not just find you worried out of your mind a few minutes ago?"

Alex rolled her eyes. "Funny, she seemed to think we'd find trouble when we're here on our own."

Slade snickered. "The Luthor mansion, exploding motorbike . . . "

"OK, OK, I get it!" Alex buried her face in her hands, making the Aussie laugh as they headed out of the locker room and towards the exit. "I get into trouble, too, and yes, you can keep an eye on me. Happy?"

"Very," Slade grinned, giving her a side hug as they continued on.

James sighed as he dribbled a basketball on the court he was at. "Nothing?" he asked, his helmet masking his voice. "There's nothing going on?"

"Nada," Winn answered. "Not even a jaywalker."

He ignored the thud that meant Winn had fired his toy gun into the van. "How did Supergirl do this on quiet nights?" he wondered, tossing the ball over his shoulder and enjoying the sound of nothing but net.

"Yeah, she would stay home," Winn answered.

"Oh, yeah, right," James huffed. "The luxury of super hearing."

"Yeah, right?" Winn agreed. "I mean, dealing with the slow days is just all a part of learning to do things without her while she's on vacation."

James caught the basketball in his hand, then started spinning it on his finger. "How long do you think they'll be on Argo?"

"I don't know," Winn admitted. "But I think now that she knows her mom's alive, she might be having more of these vacations." He sighed. "Well, let's call it a day, shall we?"

James nodded, putting the basketball down, then paused when he heard shouting around the corner. "Hold on, I thought I heard something."

"Uh oh," Winn gulped. "There's a bank around the corner!"

James ran as fast as he could, and he arrived just in time to see the robber pull a machine gun from where he had hidden it as best he could and take aim at the police officer chasing him. He shoved the officer out of the way and activated his shield just as the bullets started. James grunted as the force of the bullets shuffled him back, and he somersaulted behind the car the officer was hiding behind. Bullets riddled the car, and James took a deep breath, looking at the officer. "You OK?" he asked.

"Yeah," the officer nodded, out of breath. "Thanks."

"Was that a cannon?" Winn asked in disbelief as James looked at his now very dented shield. "What kind of gun was that?!"

Disclaimer: I don't know Kryptonese, so I don't think that was the proper spelling of what Kara said, but I did my best. Also, why is Queen-Danvers family bonding so darn cute to write?

I'm on a bit of a roll now, but I'm working the next three days, so unless I miraculously get another chapter up today, I don't think you can expect an update for a while.
