"Kyle Dunber." The teenager looked up when his name was called. Taking a small breath, he walked into the room. His palms were sweaty as he approached two men in white garments with golden trimmings. On the back of their white robes was a large dragon eye, the symbol of the Wing Riders. A noble group of dragon riders.
He'd learnt about them in class. There wasn't very much known about the strange cloaked figures but, it was believed that they came from another dimension only they knew how to get to.
Each year, those who turned sixteen had a chance to bond with a dragon egg. But the chances of that were extremely low. Only last year did someone bond with a dragon egg, but he was the first in over a decade. Kyle silently prayed he would bond with an egg.
On hundreds of wooden pedestals were an array of dragon eggs. His eyes shifted from one egg to another. They were all so different. Some had a rough shell, while others were nice and smooth. Some had spikes, others were vibrant in colour. There were even dragon eggs smaller than my palm.
Nervously the young lad brushed his fingers through his hair. The Wing Riders watched him with an uncomfortably calm stare. "Kyle Dunber." Another cloaked figure walked towards me. It was a tall dark-skinned woman.
Kyle tried not to stare at her face which was covered in scars around her cheeks and forehead. But the scars shimmered like gold and when he looked closer, he considered that they might even be intentional. They seemed to curl down towards her cheek bones and in between her eyes like a golden mask.
The woman stood in the centre of the pedestals, dressed in the same white and gold clothing. In one hand she held a long wooden staff that curled majestically around the top. "I'm Arsha Beladoven, a Bonding Guardian from Phillisian."
Kyle was pretty mediocre at geography, but he was almost sure that this place did not exist on earth. Or at least, not on that earth. "My job is to care for the chosen eggs and travel to dimensions, such as yours, and oversee the yearly Bonding Ceremony." He could tell that this small speech had been repeated several times from the slightly bored look in her eyes. "Take your time to look at your options. Once you have decided please place your hand on the shell."
"How will I know if I bonded?" He quickly asked. The woman gave a small grin.
"Don't worry, I'll know." Was all she said in return before walking out of the way. His suddenly felt sick to his stomach. This was it. His ticket out of here could be in that room, but which one was it? The young boy's eyes shifted from egg to egg. But they soon landed on a large golden egg. Its shell was decorated with small circular dents.
On its solid surface he could see his own reflection staring back at him and his hand raising to touch it.
But he stopped.
His instincts seemed to be tugging at him and trying to take him somewhere. Kyle considered fighting back but then followed the pull. His feet moved yet he didn't feel it, is was if something else had taken over him.
Inside he could sense the warmth of another life. Was that possible? On a wide oak pedestal, much like all the others, was an egg.
Its surface was smooth and shiny with curling spikes, almost like long pointed leaves curved around the its oval shape. The egg was dark blue with fluorescent green around the spiked ends.
"This one." His eyes did move from the egg, an invisible force made him want to touch it, but he was unsure. Kyle flinched when he felt someone grab his hand lightly. Arsha stood beside him, placing his hand on the surface.
She closed her eyes, her hand still on his. Kyle felt a kind of energy flow through him. But the energy was not his own. It was as if he could feel the life of the unborn dragonet intertwine with his own.
Something told him, he wasn't the only one to feel it. Arsha took in a deep breath and removed her hand before nodding to the Wing Rider's. Both of them moved forward and picked up the egg. Kyle flinched and reached out for it, not wanting it to leave his side.
"Don't worry, you will see it tomorrow. But first we must get you to Syle."
"Syle? Wait, what's going on?"
She looked at him reassuringly, her once bored eyes now lit up with a new energy. "You passed. Congratulations, you're one of the new students at the School of Scales." Kyle took a shaky breath, but it was cut short when Arsha put her hands on his shoulders.
"I don't want you to tell anyone what has happened, the less Hyrian's that know, the better."
"Hyrian's?"
"Sorry, your dimension is known as Hyrin. Hyrian's classify anyone who lives here."
"Dimension? So... the rumours are true, you're from another dimension?"
"Enough questions," the dark-skinned women interrupted. "they will all be answered soon. I want you to meet me here tomorrow and 7am sharp with your things, you hear me?"
"Y-yeah." Kyle walked out of the room watching the Wing Rider's safely storing the egg.
The sun gave pale orange light in the cold morning sky as Kyle walked towards Arsha and the group of Wing Rider's. All of them were dressed in the same white and gold uniforms as yesterday. His greyish-blue eyes glanced around for a familiar object. "Your egg has already been transported to Syle." Arsha said when she caught sight of him.
"Is anyone else coming?"
"No, only you. But honestly that's no surprise. There's barely ever any Hyrian's who bond." Kyle gave a small smirk. It was funny how she said it so casually. He understood calling someone an mexician or a New Yorker, but those were countries and cities, not dimensions.
"Come on, we'd best be on our way." A Wing Rider spoke clearly and Arsha nodded. Without a word the group walked away until they were in an empty park. A Wind Rider took a small object from his pocket. It was a golden key with an amber coloured jewel in its head. The key's blade curled in a perfect spiral. "It's a Dimension Key. We use it to open Dimension Doors."
Kyle glanced at the Bonding Guardian who was only a few years older than him.
The Wind Rider held the key forward and seemed to turn it in an invisible lock. As soon as he did the outline of a door glowed and he watched in amazement as the tall figure opened the Dimension Door. It was like someone had cut out a piece of a painting.
A bright white light shone from within the door almost blinding him. With his eyes only half open, Kyle followed them inside. A small click made him jump and turn around. The door had closed, leaving them standing in a cold-
It wasn't a room. There were no walls, but the floor was covered in a sparkling mirror. Once again, he met eyes with his own reflection. All above him was blue sky. There was no sun, but somehow everything was bright.
"Iven." Arsha called out. There was a pattering of feet against the glass, but Kyle saw no one. Arsha cleared her throat and got his attention before pointing at the ground. A figure dressed in a dark brown hood was standing in the mirror, but when he looked up the man was nowhere to be seen.
"Greetings." The reflection gave grin. The hood of his cloak covered most of his face.
"Wha-" Kyle jumped in surprise.
"This is Iven. He's the Guardian of the Dimension Doors. He's been here since before your dimension existed."
"Another Hyrin I'm guessing?" Iven chuckled at Kyle's still shocked face.
"Yeah, we had one last year as well."
"I remember." The cloaked figure replied before holding out his hand. "I happy to see the key I leant you worked."
"They always do, thank you once again." The Wing Rider who held the key had to bend down and the young boy watched as Iven's hand reached out from the mirror and took in gently.
"You don't have to thank me, I do it every year and I will do for the years to come."
"Iven created the Dimension Keys, without them we wouldn't be able to travel between dimensions." The Bonding Guardian explained, and Kyle gave an interested nod. "Iven, we need to get to Syle."
"Well then, I won't delay you anymore. I'm guessing the young one would have classes to get to."
"Classes? Oh, right." Iven grinned at Kyle before moving his hand slightly. In the distance another Dimension Door, like the one they had walked through earlier, appeared.
"See you soon Iven." Arsha motioned for Kyle to follow through the door.
"Safe travels!" Iven called behind them. "And good luck Kyle." The Guardian gave a wise grin as if he knew something Kyle didn't. He gave a polite grin in return before spinning around. "Hold on! I didn't tell you my name-" But Iven was gone.
