"Dave, get in here!" A nurse called as she rushed Darren, his friends and a bleeding Matt through a door, "Dave!"

They came to an abrupt stop, Matt jerking forward on his wheeled stretcher [yes I searched what this was called] and bumping into a tall wooden desk where the nurse peered over the top, presumably to see Dave.

"Dave, what the hell are you doing? Get off your phone. I've got an unconscious-."

"Gee, Karen. Sorry, I was just talking to-" Dave raised both of his hands up as he stood up off his chair

"It doesn't matter, just- just do something. I'm meant to be in A&E now." Karen groaned, shoving Dave's shoulder before walking briskly away.

"Alright, kids." Dave smiled brightly, clapping his hands together, "Who's unconscious and who's not?"

"Are you kidding?" Darren gaped, his friends murmuring their collective agreement.

"I'm assuming it's this ol' chap on the bed?" Dave chuckled, patting Matt's foot.

"I'm going to get a new doctor." Joey whispered in Darren's ear, spinning on his heel and wandering off somewhere.

Awhile later, after suffering what felt like way more than 10 minutes of Dave asking ridiculous questions, Joey arrived with a new, much more professional-looking doctor.

"Hi, Dave. I'll take it from here, yes?" The doctor smiled politely, grabbing the handlebars on the wheeled stretcher and starting to push it down a corridor, after telling everyone to sit and wait in the first waiting room to the left.

"Darren, sit down!" Meredith snapped, finally stilling Darren's incessant pacing.

"I just- I feel like it was my fault, and now-"

"It's not your fault, Darren." Lauren shook her head, perched on the edge of a hard blue chair.

"But it was my place he took, if I hadn't offered to swap with him then-"

"Then someone else would've and the same thing would've happened." Joey rolled his eyes, "It's not your fault."

"No, you don't-"

"Darren!" Brian groaned, "Just sit down, shut up and chill. Freaking out and arguing with everyone isn't going to help anything."

Darren sighed deeply, sitting down quickly in a chair, the thud it caused seeming much louder in the almost silent room. Crossing his arms tightly across his chest and throwing one leg over the other, Darren sat completely still, staring at the wall opposite him with a pout on his lips.

The friends stayed in the same positions for over an hour, only moving when one of them would offer to go buy coffees for everyone.

Darren's eyes had eventually moved to watch a small red clock which was set 5 minutes behind. It's incessant ticking would have normally gone unnoticed, but now, sitting in a completely silent room, it was the only thing Darren could focus on.

Finally, after what felt like years, a plain white door was opened -creaking as it did so-  and Dave stepped into the room.

Darren stared, mouth agape as Dave began telling a woman and her son that they could go visit their friend now. After the woman explained that they weren't waiting for an unconscious man, instead waiting to have her son's knee checked, Dave stood up, dusting his knees and turning around to Darren.

"Oh, it's your friend!" Dave laughed, patting Darren's back, "You can go see him now."

"Is he conscious?" Darren asked, standing up.

"Yes, he's still conscious."

"But he was unconscious before-"

"Darren." Lauren placed a hand on Darren's shoulder, stopping the man, "Just leave it, we'll go see for ourselves."

Upon entering the ward and finding their friend's bed, they discovered that the man was conscious, Darren breathing a deep sigh of relief at the sight of Matt's small smile."

"I am never dancing again." Matt sighed, eyes wide as his friends moved to accommodate everyone around the bed, Meredith and Bonnie sitting on the two chairs either side of the bed.

Darren, being the only one who didn't laugh in response to Matt, opened his mouth to stutter out a long-winded apology.

Matt, as well as everyone else, watched Darren with fond smirks on their faces, Matt soon interrupting the boy's rambling, "Darren, it's fine. I'm not dead, right? I'm conscious, right? Besides, it's not your fault. I'm the one who said I could do it when I clearly can't."

After that, the room fell into a comfortable silence until it was broken by some sort of mixture between a laugh and a sob and suddenly all eyes were back on Darren.

"Darren, honestly, man. You're the only one crying here and then you still claim that you're not gay." Joey sighed deeply, shaking his head.

Swatting his hand over in Joey's direction and holding the other up over his mouth, Darren turned around to collect himself before inhaling deeply and exhaling even deeper. Then he turned around and stepped forward to throw both arms around Matt's neck, muttering a quiet apology only Matt could hear, the other man rolling his eyes and reaching up to pat Darren's back.
