Chapter 3: Slowly Mending

While Naruto was sitting at his desk which was right by Uchiha Sasuke, not that he noticed, everyone else was gaping at him. Now, the only reason Naruto didn't sense their stares was because he was drowning in the memories of their deaths.

'Man what the hell happened to Naruto? Kiba thought. Akamaru yipped quietly

'That baka! He is just trying to look cool!' was the thought of Sakura and Ino. Then as if sensing one another's thoughts, faced each other and glared fiery death upon the other.

'N- Naruto-kun seems d-different. Hinata thought staring at her crush. She blushed as she realized she was staring.

'It seems Naruto-san has changed. I wonder what brought this change upon him. I will keep an eye on him for now.' Shino adjusted his shades.

'Was he hiding his true self? No, this happened overnight. But how is it possible? Troublesome.' Shikamaru thought, though he felt a weird feeling the longer he stared at the blond boy, almost like, camaraderie?

'Wow Naruto looks nice today.' Choji just kept eating his chips. He ate his chips.

'What happened to the dobe? He feels different, calmer.' Sasuke shrugged it off and continued to brood.

Meanwhile Naruto decided to Meditate to try and bury his grief and soon found himself in a familiar sewer. Grinning he set off towards the red light glowing at the end of the hall.

Soon enough he ended up in front of a huge cage, gates looming over him. A single red eye glowed in the darkness.

Narutos grin faded a little as he considered the fact that Kurama might not even remember. "... Kurama?"

"Yes Kit?" The giant nine tailed beast said.

Narutos grin lit up the entire seal. "You're back!"

He ran through the bars of the cage and hugged Kuramas snout. He then ran back out and got ready to rip off the seal.

"Kit, hold on. If you remove the seal now every shinobi in the village will feel it. I have not fully purified it anyways so you wouldn't be able to access Bijuu Mode anyways."

Narutos face fell. "But Kurama, I don't want you to be stuck in this cage again." He said. Kurama deserved to be freed.

"Don't worry, by the time of your mission to Nami my chakra will be pure and you can remove the seal. Of course until Jiraiya can unlock the rest of it you will only achieve half of the full power. You will not have the Rikudo Sennin Ninjutsu Repelling orbs [what are those called again?]. You will have access to only six tails of my chakra but your control will go to shit." Kurama informed him.

Naruto nodded. His face brightened as an idea struck him. "Hey Kurama! I'm a seal master right?"

Kurama nodded, not sure what his host was getting at.

"So I can at least tweak the seal, right? Maybe give you more room and better scenery."

Kurama perked up at this. "Really? You have to had a level eleven masters degree to achieve that."

Naruto nodded. "I earned The degree in battle when I freed one of the Biju from the Gedo Mezzu (is that how you spell it?)."

"Then yes you may 'tweak the seal'." Kurama said.

Naruto pulled out of his mindscape to see if class had started. All he saw were the students whispering to one another and Iruka nowhere in sight. He went back into his mindscape and some sealing supplies appeared. He got a look of concentration on his face as he studied the Shiki Fuuin and started created a modified version. Stroke after stroke he remade the seal. After one hour in the mindscape he finished. "Here we go!" Naruto ran up to the seal. Kuramas eyes widened and was about to stop the man turned boy but it was too late. Ripping off the seal Naruto felt a huge surge of chakra before he slapped on the new one and the flow of chakra slowed to the normal trickle.

"There! All done!" he said and as promised the cage expanded and the tunnels conveyed the real world.

"Now you can see what I see, well unless I don't want you to. He said and jumped back as Kurama rammed into the bars.

"You BAKA!" The fox roared. "Every ninja worth their salt is gonna feel that surge! You just got back and now you are gonna have some explaining to do!"

Naruto tried to calm the beast down. "Kurama its fine! I need to tell jiji anyways so this is the perfect opportunity!" he said.

Kurama just growled in exasperation and laid down with a huff.

Naruto closed his eyes and when he opened them he found himself staring into the worried eyes of Iruka, who no doubt felt the surge of Chakra.

"Naruto are you okay? You wouldn't wake so I was about to take you to the Hokage." he said.

"I'm fine Iruka-sensei! I do need to see Jiji though. I have something important to tell him." Naruto replied. Kurama? How did I not feel Iruka trying to wake me?

"You were making a seal. You were also blocking anything and everything out."

"Why would you take that baka to Hokage-sama Iruka-sensei? Wouldn't he just go to the infirmary? And what would a loser like you need to bother the greatest ninja in the village with?" a voice sneered.

Naruto looked over to who spoke and saw that it was Sakura who had spoken. He felt a flash of hurt. He had forgotten how petty this Sakura was.

Iruka frowned. "Sakura, the Hokage sees Naruto as his grandson and told me that if he ever fell asleep and didn't wake up to bring him to him, and might I add that that is no way to speak to your fellow comrades." he scolded.

Sakura looked down ashamed. "Sorry."

"Why would someone like the Hokage consider a dead last loser like Naruto his grandson." Ino sneered.

This time Naruto could not hide the immense hurt and flinched. it must have also showed on his face because Ino seemed to realise just what she said. Guilt flashed through her, and she opened her mouth to apologize.

Naruto stood up cutting her off. "I'm going to see jiji sensei, i already know whose team i'm on." He ran out the door and didn't look back to see Iruka turn to Ino looking angry.

Naruto bolted over the roofs above Jonin speed invisible to the untrained eye and a colorless blur to trained eyes. One lazy Jonin lifted his headband and started following. Because of his sharingan he could see who it was and was shocked at the speed being displayed. Minato?

Naruto gave no signs of knowing he was being tailed and continued on his way to the tower. He needed to tell jiji about the future and see him alive again. What Ino had said had shook him, more than it should have, showing how much stress he was really under. And on my first day back too. How pathetic.

He didn't bother going through the door. He went and jumped up to the window to the Hokages office.

Luckily it was open not that Naruto would have cared either way. His eyes watered as he saw the old man sitting there alive.

Hiruzen Sarutobi was having a rather bland day. All day he had been stuck in his office doing paperwork. Then there was that moment when he felt a surge of chakra. He had known that chakra and had been about to rush to the academy to check on his surrogate grandson when one of the academy sensei Misaki he believed had rushed in saying that Naruto had released the surge and wouldn't wake up. Then not a second later another Chunin instructor came in saying he had woke up and that everything was fine. So he had sighed in relief and sat back down to complete the days paperwork. Currently he is still signing/discarding papers when he senses something approaching the tower at high speeds rivalling the Yondaime. He looked towards the window looking perfectly relaxed but was tense ready to incapacitate if it was an assassin or enemy. He was surprised when it was Naruto who looked ready to cry.

"Naruto-kun whats wrong? And how were you moving so fast?"

Naruto ignored him and rushed to say his spill.

"Jiji, I'm sure you felt that surge earlier? Well I had made a seal and it was a modified version of the seal that keeps Kurama in his cage. Now he has more room and isn't as angry."

Sarutobi stood up. "What! Naruto-kun you cannot trust the fox. It will do not good."

Naruto shook his head. "No jiji you don't understand. Kurama is my partner. He no longer wishes to destroy the village and his chakra is being cleansed. I am not the naive child I was last night." He released the seal on the Shodaimes necklace revealing it and his true body.

The Sandaime sucked in a breath. "Naruto... What happened?"

Again Naruto ignored the shocked look on the thirds face.

"I come from six years from now. I was eighteen and we were at war. Not with any of the countries but with the organisation Akatsuki. The one behind everything was no other than Uchiha Madara. Everyone close to me died. After Kakashi I snapped. I used a forbidden Uzumaki seal. I came back and consumed my younger self. I need to change a lot so the war doesn't happen and that you and all the others live." Naruto ran over to his Jiji and clung to him letting out all his bottled up emotions in tortured sobs that wracked his frame. Sarutobi rubbed comforting circles on the young mans back.

"Well this is interesting." a voice interrupted.
