CHAPTER 11 : A Sugary Delight
"Florina," David said as he emerged from the candy shop. She was sitting in her wheelchair munching happily on her third chocolate chip cookie. When she spotted David, she gave him a warm smile.
"Where did the slime ball go?" the emerald eyed wizard handed Florina a chocolate bar "And how could he leave you alone like that, so much for your knight and savior."
Florina chuckled and shook her head, "I forgot my wand and asked him if he could get it for me."
"Oh." David nodded and smirked, "He should have stayed around for longer though, we could have scared more kids with him."
The witch grinned, finishing the last piece of her cookie and moved onto the chocolate bar that David bought. They stayed in awkward silence for a while as David watched the witch's unhealthy obsession for sweets with amusement.
After a while, he chuckled "How are you not a hundred kgs by now Florina, did that cookie even last two seconds?"
She gave him a playful pout, "Are you fat shaming me David? Well, to answer your question, I don't really know to be honest. Maybe my metabolism is higher than normal, I don't really think about it."
He nodded, still smiling to himself, "Whatever it is, it has been serving you really well. You look as fantastic as ever."
The wizard didn't realize what he said right away but when he did, his cheeks flushed and avoided Florina's surprised gaze. He stood behind her wheelchair and pushed it forward. "I think we should head back home, it's getting colder out."
Florina immediately left the candy bar and turned to him "But David, I haven't even tried ice cream yet. You promised me I would try that one too right?"
He stopped pushing her and smiled, "Flora, I don't know if you should eat anymore sweets. I honestly don't know if it is even healthy to let you eat that much of it. It might...it might slow the healing process of your leg, you care about that, don't you?"
"David please!" she gave him another fake pout "I don't feel there is anything wrong with me I swear. And don't worry about my legs, they are healing perfectly well. But sweets are...they are..."
The witch got quiet for a few minutes, fiddling with her fingers nested on her lap. A few tears ran down her cheeks as she struggled hard not to shed anymore tears. David noticed her silence and crouched down to her level.
He placed a hand on hers when he saw her tears, feeling guilty. He spoke softly, "Florina, what is it? Was it something I said because if it was, I am very sorry—"
"I am sorry David," she whispered as fresh tears stained her cheeks "after... after what happened in the forbidden forest, I became... I got weak. Very weak. Anything can set me off. You didn't do or say anything I promise. It's... it's quite the opposite actually, you have been wonderful to me and Severus. I wish I could repay your wonderful hospitality someday."
The emerald eyes twinkled with happiness. The hand that rested on top of hers was shivering with excitement. Florina faced David to see a bright grin stretching across his face, a genuine sign of happiness she has never seen before.
Florina took the opportunity and squeezed his hands in hers as she gave him her warm smile. He scooted closer to her, the bright grin still clearly visible.
"I promised myself I will do anything for you so you don't owe me anything dear. It's quite the opposite in fact, I owe you a lot. The least I owe you is an explanation as to why I... I..."
He stopped himself abruptly before he could spill more information, remembering the unbreakable vow he did with Dumbledore. According to the vow, he wasn't supposed to mention anything from the past to Florina. The wizard cursed himself for agreeing to make such a vow.
David expected the witch to get curious to what he has to say and he was surprised to find the opposite.
She nodded smiling back at him. After a few seconds, she said "if you really feel like you owe me, the least you can do is buy me an ice cream."
David laughed at the seriousness of her tone despite her silly request. She frowned slightly, feeling offended by his outburst. He suddenly got curious to the reasoning behind her peculiar request.
"Florina, why do you keep insisting for me to buy you an ice cream? We can come out here any other time, why now?"
She shrugged, "I... well...candy helps me forget bad memories David." He lowered his head and nodded understanding.
"I know my request seems silly to you but this is the way I deal with my pain. I simply push it away with food and candy. It helps me forget, keep myself occupied. I am aware it is not healthy but this is the way I cope."
David shook his head, "You are a strong woman Florina, give yourself credit for that. You went through a lot of hardships in your life so I can understand your methods of coping. I don't necessarily agree with them but I admire your courage of admitting it."
"I wish however," he held her hand once more "you could tell me what happened on that horrible night. I cannot stop blaming myself for letting you go with that ghost alone and... well, I cannot shake the feeling that he was behind it all, am I right?"
"You mean Davies?"
He nodded.
She shook her head, smiling weakly to herself, "It's the opposite Dic-David. He didn't want to leave me alone but... they... they threatened him. He had no choice. I told him before I don't want anyone to die for me anymore, or thrown in hell for me. I... I was glad he was gone when they told him to, at least he... he didn't see what happened."
David squeezed her hands firmly, forcing her to look at him once more. She turned to him, her eyes swimming in tears. He couldn't bring the courage to ask what happened once more, so he resorted to giving her a silent hug. She hugged him back without an effort, even going as far as holding onto him tightly.
At that moment, he felt that that was what she really needed. Silent notion of support. It was more moving than a thousand words. After staying in that position for a short time, she pulled away slowly.
"Thank you Dave," she said giving him a wide grin "you are an amazing friend."
His face shone brighter than a thousand suns when he heard his nickname being uttered for the first time from her. That was the nickname she gave me back when we were at Hogwarts together, he thought happily.
Before everything got complicated. Before you forgot me my dear Flora.
"Th-thank you," he stuttered. David immediately stood up and stood behind her wheelchair.
"Come on," he said as he pushed her forward "let's go to the ice cream truck—"
"Oh no David," she said quickly "take me to an ice cream shop, I want to try all the flavours they have."
"Flora," he chuckled "an ice cream truck has a lot of flavours too. Besides, that was your request when we were on top the astronomy tower, remember."
She shook her head, "I... I changed my mind. We can go to an ice cream truck later but for now, please take us to a shop nearby."
He shrugged, "It is fine by me either way Florina. Let's go."
She gave him an enthusiastic smile and let him push her forward. When she faced the road again, her smile intensified as they got closer to the shop.

Note: Rose's real name is Rosaline but she likes to be called Rose for short. But whenever she has a conversation with her subconscious, I like to distinguish between them so I gave them two names,
Rosaline = the fairy "Rose".
Rose = the fairy's subconscious.
The fairy was cursing her wings that were extremely wet from the rain. She was thankful however that the heavy showers finally stopped but it left in its wake a soaking wet silver wings. She cannot use her wings even to hover a few inches of the ground as long as they were wet.
Rose resorted to running as fast as she could – which was equivalent to the speed of a human walking- and it wasn't getting her as far as she hoped. Another terrifying thought plagued the fairy's mind.
Severus, she thought. I have to get to him before that other person does. Curse those useless wings, how could I save him if I cannot even fly to him? I don't even know for sure if my vision happened yet. Oh God...
She felt herself slow down as fear enveloped her entire being paralyzing her.
What if, she thought, what if it already happened? Even if it didn't, I won't be able to get there in time with these soaking wings.
"You can still save him Rosaline," the fairy's subconscious said "It wasn't a past memory, it was a future event. It didn't happen yet –"
"But I don't know where he is!" Rosaline shouted to no one. "Even if my wings were working, I-I don't know where he was at. I couldn't see anything in my blurry vision. And to my luck, he was in a dark place too, making it impossible to see his location."
"Exactly!" her subconscious suddenly exclaimed. "Think Rosaline... he was trying to find a light switch. Where do you think you can find something like that?"
"In a human house," Rosaline whispered back her mind racing.
But Severus is a wizard, wizards do not typical rely on electricity, they have other methods to light up their houses. Especially Severus. I heard him mocking David for still relying on it.
Her wings began to get dried as the wind blew through them but they were still not dry enough to levitate the fairy in the air. As the fairy was deeply immersed in thought, her wings were beating violently, something a fairy usually does to help her think.
"Wait," she whispered as it dawned on her "Yes that is it! He... he must have went to David's house!"
"Rose," the fairy spoke to her subconscious "I need you take to us to David's house. We might try to break a few rules, to be honest it doesn't matter at this point. I already hid Florina from Nixie, so might as well continue till the end."
Her subconscious – Rose – paused for a while contemplating the fairy's idea.
Rosaline – the fairy – got tired of waiting for Rose's response and shot, "I know Rose, I am not supposed to use any enchantment that aids me on Earth. But this is Severus's life on the line, it is as important to me as Florina's. She... she values him and cannot imagine her life without him. He is her mentor and best friend. They went through a lot together Rose and I am not about to take that away from her because of a psycho human trying to kill him. "
She nodded back at her, "You are right, we cannot let him die. Perform the incantation Rosaline. Dry your wings."
The fairy nodded and stood still as she raised her arms forming a T shape with her body. She closed her eyes and began in a sing-song melody,
Oh merciful Wing Goddess, Queen of all Kings,
We call upon you, to heal our meager wings,
With this enchantment, a kindness that brings,
Those younglings from the descendant harm,
And make them succumb to our charm.
When Rosaline uttered the last verse, her wings glowed into a bright happy yellow for the first time in months, sprinkling fairy dust as they fully extended. The fairy felt the warmth spreading through her soaking wings making them dry instantly.
Once they dried out, the yellow glow died down and the glow was replaced once again with the dimmed silver grey. The fairy looked upon her wings missing the happy golden glow that was bestowed upon her erect wings. But she knew there wasn't enough time for reminiscing.
Rosaline tested her wings, hovering a few inches off the ground. When she found that to be a success, she beat her wings once very powerfully and they shot her to the sky.
"Thank you Rose," she whispered as she soared through the cloudy evening sky.

"What should I get her?" David asked himself as he scanned the different flavours of ice cream plated in front of him.
He had left the witch outside the store since she told him she felt embarrassed going in the store in a wheel chair. The emerald eyed wizard tried to convince her that there was nothing to be embarrassed about but she insisted on waiting outside for him.
Not wanting to burden her anymore, he decided to go in the store by himself, forgetting to ask her what flavours she wanted to try out.
"Maybe I should get her chocolate," the wizard whispered to himself but he shook his head immediately "she had too many chocolates, at this point, any chocolate flavour will taste stale to her."
An overlay enthusiastic female worker came running towards him from behind the counter, eager to take his order. Once she stood in front of him, she gave him a wide grin and said "Hello mister and welcome to Sugary Delights, what would you like to taste first?"
"Um... well..." David was taken aback by the enthusiasm of the worker and froze in place. He looked down at the tens of flavours laying neatly in front of him inside the glass counter, feeling lost.
When there was no response from the wizard, the girl smiled at him, "Would you like to try out a new flavour. It is brand new sir –"
"I am sorry lady," David immediately interrupted "not to be rude or anything but can I have some time to choose on my own."
The wizard wasn't typically a social outgoing human and would rarely interact with any stranger he doesn't know. So naturally, the girl's enthusiasm intimidated him.
The girl however was heartbroken by the harsh response and took a few seconds to react. It was but a moment and her smile returned, as bright and enthusiastic as ever. She nodded, "Of course Sir. I will be over there when you are ready."
With that, she went to serve another woman who had just entered. The wizard resumed his search for a good ice cream flavour until his eyes laid upon an intriguing one. In neat pink calligraphy writing laid the words 'Love potion' on a pink label.
David was aware it was just a cute name for an ice cream flavour and it wasn't an actual love potion since he was in a muggle shop, but the name alone intrigued him. Deep down, he wondered what will Florina's response be when he tells her the flavour was called Love potion.
He nodded to himself, making up his mind. Raising his hand to call on the girl from earlier, he saw her leave the woman she was serving, making her male co-worker serve her instead, and went to David smiling.
"Are you ready to order sir?" she asked in a higher pitched voice than before. He simply nodded and pointed to the one he decided upon.
"Oh," she looked down at the flavour he chose and frowned slightly "And how many scoops you want from the love potion Sir?"
"Two. Actually, make it four."
"Perfect," she forced a smile and began scooping out the ice cream. Her demeanor suddenly changed after David pointed the kind of flavour he wanted.
As she placed the second scoop, she faced him still forcing a smile, "So who is the special lady?"
"Excuse me?" David raised a brow.
When the girl saw David's expression, she felt that she crossed a line and shook her head "Oh...um...nothing sir, just...um...mutterings."
The emerald eyed wizard didn't care in the slightest and just nodded, wishing this exchange could move along faster, he didn't want to keep Florina waiting after all.
After the girl closed the ice cream bowl, David suddenly asked, "Why is it called Love potion?"
The girl's enthusiastic smile returned as she said "Well, this flavour was introduced the past Valentine's day. It's a mix of berries and has cute little chocolate hearts inside it. I honestly don't know why it was called that and don't believe in presence of such a potion."
"Really?" David raised a brow and chuckled.
If only you knew lady, he thought.
"Yes," she nodded "I don't believe love can be forced upon a person with a potion or showers of gifts even. It grows with time, like a mighty elm. The more you give in a relationship, the stronger and powerful it would be. Time is the only thing that induces love, nothing else."
David was listening to her quietly until she was done. He found himself asking, "How much time?"
She smiled back, "As much as it takes Sir. Could be months, years even. The more you give, the better it will be."
The wizard nodded as he took the bag. He exited the shop as the lady gave him a sad smile, secretly wishing he had stayed longer.
"There you go Flor—"David stopped in his tracks outside the shop looking left and right.
Florina wasn't waiting outside for him like she said.
In fact, she was nowhere to be found. She was gone.
"Where did she go?" David asked himself in panic, the bag in his hand dropped to the floor.
A/N: Btw guys, Love potion is a real BaskinRobins ice cream flavour and it is exactly how I described it. It was so good!Did anyone else try it out, lemme know :)
