The third wave
Patricia exhaled. She hated waiting, and was having cold feet. Just how long more did she have to wait? She took a quick scan of the area, taking in the sweet smell of daises that filled the air right before she puffed air in her cheeks.
"You're doing the right thing Tricia" she told herself "just wait a while longer"
She checked her wrist watch again. She had lost count of how many times she already did that. Goodness, she was so cold. No one warned her about the weather in London, but if she had already spent hours on the plane getting there , there was no point backing out now.
"Would you like anything else ma'm"
Patricia turned to the waitress in a red apron holding on to a tray in front of her.
She forced a smile on her face. She had almost forgotten that she had already emptied her cup of orange juice twice now. She scoffed and then turned back to the waitress
"A glass of water would do ."
The lady exchanged smiles with her and then walked away. Patricia turned quickly to the door as soon as she heard the bell ring. Someone was coming in
Thank God
She exhaled in relief as Veronica came rushing in , looking back to make sure she wasn't being followed. It was obvious she was freezing as she didn't take her hands out of her pockets for a second.
She looked around like she was searching for someone and Patricia waved to her. She had to at least make it easier for Veronica to find her
For someone who was trying to remain invincible, who had spent the past one week , hiding from the London police, she was doing a good job. It was already a hard job trying to find her in the first place talk more of setting a meet-up. Patricia had invested a lot into making this happen and now she had, she was sure to make good use of the time she bought.
Veronica noticed Patricia at the far end of the diner. She was alone just as they agreed. She pulled her cap further down her face so no one else could recognize her while she found her way towards Patricia
She had to make it fast
"Mrs Veronica?"
Patricia stretched a hand to Veronica for a handshake. Veronica could care less, she hurriedly took her seat.
"We don't have much time." She said dismissing Patricia's gesture to be welcoming. Patricia swallowed hard and slowly took her hands back
"Uh," she started nervously. "would you like something to drin-"
"Did you bring it?"
Patricia froze.
Of course, there was no time for pleasantries, she wasn't going to push it either. She needed to be on the next plane back home anyway. She nodded.
"Let me see the tape first."
Veronica glared at her for a second like she was trying to read her, to observe her and then she snorted. How exactly did she ever think she could trust this woman? All she knew was that she and Angelo were friends. What if this was a plot to find out if she had more tapes with her?
For all she knew, Patricia could also be working for the police. What if this was a plan to put her behind bars right beside her husband. This was not what she thought her vows she had made to him on their wedding day meant, she wasn't about to rot in jail with him, no matter the circumstance. There was nothing and no one taking her to that place.
Darn it!
She just needed to get rid of that tape and leave, and Patricia was going to help her do that. She just didn't care anymore. She needed all of it to be over .
Veronica scoffed.
She knew she needed Patricia more than Patricia needed her. She needed that money.
She slowly reached into her bag and took out a tiny purse from it. Patricia didn't blink, she needed to make sure her eyes were focused on Veronica. She had sacrificed so much to be there and she had to make sure she wasn't being swindled.
She watched Veronica place the tape on the table
"Is that it?"
"The only one left."
"How do I know it's real?" Patricia asked her. She had to, she could care less how loud Veronica's scoff was. "for all I know , this can be a fake. I heard you gave all the tapes to Angelo, what if this is a ploy to just take my money?"
"So why are you here?"
That was one question Patricia wasn't able to answer. She had thought this over and over even before she got on that plane. A part of her just wanted to believe this was it, that this was the only way she could protect and get Angelo to listen. It was the only way to prove to everyone that Anna was only manipulating him.
She knew she was ready to take her chances even if it meant dining with the devil, even if it meant hurting Sam and breaking his trust to do it.
But you promised Patricia.
Did she really care?
If Anna was hiding something and making Angelo do all her dirty work, she had to at least know what it was.
"Like I told you ," Veronica continued "I lied to your friend to protect myself. There was no way I was going to hand all the tapes to him, I needed some kind of insurance in case she came for us."
"C-came for you?"
"Trust me, I want to get rid of these tapes more than you know . I just want to get out of this hell hole and start over. I honestly don't care about the tapes anymore so you can have it."
Patricia tried so hard to hide her relief. She stretched her hand to reach for the tape but Veronica was faster. She placed her hand on it before Patricia could reach
"Not so fast,"
She glared at her
"My money first."
Patricia hesitated .
She slowly reached for her purse and got out a paper, no it wasn't a paper, it was a cheque
"There," she placed it gently on the table right after the waitress dropped her glass of water and walked away "ten thousand, pounds."
Patricia had to make sure she heard that right
"Just as agreed."
Veronica swallowed hard
That was it, her ticket away from all her problems
"And how do I know this is not a set up? How do I know that once I leave this place with this cheque , I won't be stopped by the police"
Patricia scoffed
"Your friends did it to me and my husband is in jail currently for it. Why should I trust you"
"The same reason you want me to trust you. We both need this too much to screw each other over."
Veronica looked at her for a while. Something about Patricia made her a bit comfortable. She looked pretty honest, she slowly let go of the tapes.
Patricia pushed the cheque towards her and Veronica caught it in a hurry. She started at it in relief
"This isn't going to bounce is it?"
Patricia raised her brows at her.
"Cool." She folded it neatly and then put it into her pocket while Patricia dropped the tape into her bag
"You know I must warn you, " She told her
"This might be the bravest thing you'd ever do in your life but they would come for you."
"You don't need to worry about me, Angelo would never hurt me."
"I wasn't talking about him." Veronica glared at her "I'm talking about them. "
Patricia frowned , Just what was she talking about now
"They never let anyone get in their way. Don't let them fool you child, they are the bad guys, they are the enemy. You need to be careful."
Patricia was trying so hard to understand Veronica.
She had a lot to ask but she wasn't sure if she needed to listen to Veronica. She was just another criminal who would say anything and give up any information at all to bag all the money she can.
She watched Veronica get her up from the table quickly , wrapping her coat around her and bending her head so no one would notice. Soon, Veronica was out of the dining. Patricia wished she could keep looking to know exactly where she was going till the loud ring of her phone caught her attention.
She turned as fast as she could to her bag
Urgh!
That was a call she wasn't sure she wanted to answer
It was Pamela. She could almost guess the reason her fraternal twin was calling her this time. Even if she had left her family and her home in Australia when she was nineteen to chase her dreams of being a doctor in Germany, she never really felt far from home. How could she when she had a father that owned one of the biggest oil blocs in the country ,and a mum who loved to rub all their wealth in everyone's faces. That was the reason she really didn't really have friends. At least real ones that weren't after her parents power and influence, not until she met Angelo
All her life being independent was all Patricia ever wanted. It was what she ever hoped for and when she got that scholarship to study medicine in Germany, she took it without thinking Twice . It wasn't her Father's dream for her. He had always wanted his both daughters to graduate from the same school he did, Harvard. But Patricia wanted more.
She needed to make her own life, to own her life. She needed to be what she wanted and more all on her own, she also knew she had to make that happen.
She meant it when she asked them to let her do it on her own. She meant it when she looked her father in his eyes and told him she didn't need his money. Those were such heavy words but she knew she needed him to listen.
It wasn't easy at first but she got used to it.
Her life was almost normal but it was so hard to shake them all off , to shake her other half, Pamela. How could she? Pamela was her only sister. She was the only one that ever believed in her. She was her best friend.
They were just like most of the other twins, they were inseparable. But the past week , she felt like she was going back on all her promises. She wasn't really done feeding off her family like she thought.
She exhaled
"Hello Pamela."
She tucked her hair behind her ears
"Oh my God Patricia you're so dead!" She could hear Pamela yelling over the phone "Dad's so going to kill you."
"I know Pamela, I should have called first-"
"You bet you should, twenty thousand dollars? Really?"
Patricia exhaled
She knew she should have asked her dad's permission first before she took out all that money from the bank
"You weren't supposed to touch that money T, daddy made that account in your name because he trusted you. You were supposed to use it only when there was an emergency you couldn't avoid. He's so mad T, I think you'd need to come home."
"Mela,"
Patricia rubbed her forehead.
" I know , and I promise I only took out that money because I had something to take care of. I was going to put it back after a few months. "
"Something you'd like to share?"
"No not yet Pamela-"
"Is it Angelo?"
"N-no-"
"It had better not be that ass T. He dumped you already, and now you're just going to give him money? I thought he was rich ?"
"No-no, it's not Angelo, Pamela. "
Patricia had no reason why she had to explain to anyone. That money was hers and she had the right to use it for whatever whenever she liked
"I promise I'd tell you everything soon. Tell dad I'm really sorry, I'd be home soon to apologize formally."
"You better."
"I will."
Pamela got off the phone
Patricia exhaled. She couldn't believe the length she had to go through. She just hoped it was worth it
Was it worth it? She pressed the bell and the waitress found her way to her in a minute
"Can I have my cheque please ?"
