Mending Clocks.
Anna sat still her eyes admiring the beautifully set dinner table. She could count all her favourite dishes on it and it excited her just a little bit. With all the work she had on her hands, it was only okay to treat herself once in a while and the workers knew just how to help. She turned to the other end of the table. It was empty again. Her smile slowly turned to a frown.
Eating alone on that big table was getting really boring. She wasn't sure she was enjoying it anymore. It wasn't as exciting as it would have been if he was sitting at the other end of it.
She was worried about him. She didn't want to admit it but ever since the incident on the hill, and then the bump at the elevator, Angelo was all she could think about and she wasn't sure why.
You're just desperate for his help Anna.
That was what she kept telling herself. It had to be because he was the missing piece to getting all she had ever wanted. That had to be the reason why his face kept popping up in her head and confusing her. Why did she get so suffocated everytime she thought about him? Why did she keep glancing at her watch to check for the time, wondering why he wasn't home yet? She was worried out of her mind. Was it because of her? Was that why he wasn't home yet? Had he finally decided to keep his distance from her? Had he moved out of the house because of her? Because seeing her face constantly reminded him of all the things she had said?
Why on earth wasn't he home yet?
She dropped her fork so she could rub her temples. All that thinking and worrying made them hurt a lot.
He had never been out that late before.
What was she supposed to do with all that food?
She asked herself returning her gaze to the table.
She had asked the chef to make both their favorite dishes and had sent him a text earlier to have dinner with her. This was the time, the time she was going to apologize and play Shink's stupid game of manipulating Angelo's feelings to her advantage.
"Welcome home sir Angelo."
The words of the butler made her head rise again. She could feel her heart beat faster a little. Was she excited? Relieved? Or just suprised? He was back. Angelo was back home. She shot up from the chair immediately, tucking her hair strands behind her ears so she could listen. Listen to the sounds made by his footsteps to know exactly where he was going. It was definitely the dining room.
Anna exhaled in relief. He hadn't ignored her text after all. He had intentionally come home late, but he didn't ignore it.
Think Anna think.
She bit hard on her lip.
How on earth was she going to Get Angelo on her side again? She didn't even know how to start. She had to do something. Anything. Her thoughts were interrupted as soon as she noticed the strong scent of Angelo's cologne draw closer. He was in the room now. She whirled around to meet him and their eyes met.
Anna froze.
She was sure she had rehearsed all the things she was going to say earlier but just looking at Angelo now, made everything disappear. He still managed to wear that huge frown on his face and it became worse when he saw her.
He exhaled, Pulling his glasses down his nose bridge a little. He had totally forgotten to take them off at the office. He wasn't going to say anything. He didn't have to. What about her? Why had she called him? Wasn't she going to say anything? Was she just trying to humiliate him again? He didn't have the time for that. Angelo turned to leave.
"Can we talk?"
He froze as he heard Anna's chair pull back. He could tell she was walking away from the table. Angelo drew a deep breath. Maybe he did need to listen to her, to hear what it what she wanted to say to him.
He turned.
Anna let herself smile a little.
"You got home late. " Way to go Anna, what a wonderful way to start a conversation.
"I was busy at the office." His voice was cold and straight to the point.
Oh. Anna thought. At least he replied her this time.
She took a deep breath. And rolled her eyes. She was tired of this. She just knew she had to man up and go straight to the point.
"Angelo can you please talk to me? I'm really tired of all the attitude."
Angelo rose a brow. He couldn't believe his ears.
"Attitude? I'm the one with the attitude?"
"Look," she took a few steps towards him. "I know I screwed up and you're still mad about what happened on the hill. I should not have hurt you the way I did, I should not have said all those horrible things to you and I'm sorry."
"I'm not mad at you Anna,"
Angelo made sure he was clear enough. Anna frowned. He wasn't? If he wasn't then why was he giving her such a tough time?
"I just don't care about you or trying to prove my point to you anymore."
Ouch,
Anna held her breath. That had to hurt.
"You don't owe me any apologies. You don't owe me anything except all we agreed on, and that includes taking care of my company." Anna scoffed. She couldn't believe it.
"Your company?"
"My company."
Angelo repeated glaring at her. His frown was worse than it used to be. Anna shook her head. Arguing or telling Angelo how wrong he was was only going to make things worse.
"You were right." He went on. "If this whole thing is going to work, we don't need to distract ourselves. We need to focus on the one reason we got married in the first place. The one thing we both care about, and that's the company. There should not be any room for anything less. There shouldn't be any room for complications. "
Anna furrowed her brows. Had Angelo just call her a complication? How on earth was she so short of words?
These were the exact words she had been hoping she'd hear but why were they making all the wrong impacts on her emotions? Why was she bothered by them?
She nodded.
"Good." She said, pretending to be fine with it. She could feel her hands tremble under her arms. "I'm glad we can agree on some things at last." Anna couldn't let him think she was bothered.
It was all gone. Everything she wanted to say. She didn't need them anymore. She looked at Angelo and all she could see was how much he hated her. Everything was different about him. He really meant all he said. What on earth did he do to all the feelings he had for her. Was it so easy to do away with them?
Anna frowned.
She looked away trying to avoid his gaze. Payback was really a bitch.
"You should eat something, your dinner's going to get cold." She told him, turned to the door and started to walk out from it. Anna stormed out of the dining room before Angelo could say anything else.
That was it. He could see it. He could tell she was upset. Was he too hard on her?
Angelo held his breath. He was fighting himself so hard to not let her walk away. One part wanted to hold her and tell her how he didn't mean a think he had just said hug another part held him back. He didn't want to put himself in the position he was weeks ago.
Don't fall for it Angelo.
He kept telling himself.
Don't let yourself be a fool a second time.
He exhaled and then turned to the table.
Good Lord.
He hated eating alone.
