Heartbeat

"Angelo?" Anna softly whispered.

"mnnn." Angelo moaned slowly. "You want to go again?" He asked weakly, his voice trembling even as her fingers slowly crawled on his arm to hold it. She lowered her gaze to him quickly and shook her head.

"No, I mean yes but -" she paused. "Are you expecting anyone?"

Angelo thought for a while. He frowned and furrowed his brows so he looked at her. She looked anxious about something and he couldn't tell what it was especially since he didn't have super hearing like her.

"No, why?"

Anna turned tothe clock. It was past eleven

"I can hear voices from the door. We are not alone, I think there are people here."

Angelo raised his head to the clock immediately and then settled it back on her.

"What?"

He paused for a while and tried to listen too. He could hear the voices now. Anna wasn't joking. He turned to the clock again.

"It's pretty late."

He said getting up gently from Anna. He pulled up his trousers quickly and fastened his belt while Anna tried to sit up. Her legs were still shaky a bit.

Angelo hurried to button his shirt. He forgot there were no buttons left after Anna pulled them all out before. He scratched his head for a while and then chuckled faintly looking around. He could barely find any of them. He turned to Anna who was busy try to fix her night dress in place.

She took a deep breath

"Hey," He walked closer to her.

"let me." He placed an hand around her and the other beneath her legs. Angelo slowly lifted her off the table and placed her gently on the ground.

"Are you alright?" He had to ask, noticing how she had winced sharply the moment her feet had touched the ground . He was afraid he had hurt her.

"Did i-" Anna's rough smile cut him off. She shook her head.

"I'm fine." She placed her hair strand behind her ear. Angelo exhaled in relief.

"I'd go see who dropped by." He told her. "Just wait here, okay?"

He wasn't going to let her just go out there without knowing what was out there. He was about to turn without getting an answer from her when she quickly reached for his hand. She couldn't explain it but Anna had a weird feeling about it. She was anxious, just like that time years ago at the arc. He could see how terrified she was to be on her own. He exhaled and pulled his hand from under hers so he held hers slowly.

If she was so scared being on her own then he was going to take her with him. He pulled her gently behind him as he walked out of the room.

"I'm sorry but I can't let you inside," Angelo could hear lauretta's tiny voice from the door. "Mr and Mrs Trusk are really busy at the moment and cannot attend to any visitors right now."

"Lauretta."

Angelo called as he walked in. There was a lady and a man in suits inside. They all turned when they noticed Angelo and Anna's presence.

"What's going on?" Anna asked wrapping her arms on her breasts to hide how aroused they were.

"We are sorry for the intrusion Mr And Mrs Trusk, but we'd like to speak to you both," the lady started and turned to Angelo, "Especially you Mr Trusk."

"I tried to stop them from coming in sir but they wouldn't listen," Lauretta stepped forward. Angelo slowly turned to the maid.

"It's okay Lauretta, you may go now."

The maid Bowed slightly and then walked away from the hallway. Angelo slowly turned to them.

"How can we help you?"

Angelo glared at them carefully, he could see the words "NSS" were boldly inscribed on the badges of their suits, Anna could see it too. Her heart skipped multiple beats as she read those words and took its meaning in immediately. She could see how hard the man kept staring at her with suspicion too. Anna suddenly felt Angelo's grip on her arm tighten as he pulled her behind him.

He wasn't sure what those people were there for, but one thing he knew was that they weren't exactly friendly guests. They only showed up wherever Atians where and there was no way he was going to let them hurt or take her.

"I am Miss Katherine walker and this is my assistant, Nicholas Rice. We are with the National State Security Mr Trusk and we are here concerning your recent visit to the hospital."

Angelo could feel Anna's hands tremble, he could tell how nervous she was as he could see her with the side of his eyes. He slowly turned back to the woman.

"What about it?"

"We received an information that you were admitted to Christopher hawkins hospital weeks ago, we would like to know what medical conditions you were diagnosed with."

"Since when did the NSS pry into people's private lives?"

The lady sneered.

"The NSS does not pry Mr Trusk and you're not under any obligation to render any information to us if you're not comfortable with it. The NSS would never force you to do so but however, we'd encourage you to cooperate with us to avoid certain complications."

Angelo scoffed. He wasn't going to tell them anything and if they thought threatening him was supposed to scare him, they were wrong .

"We already went ahead to get your hospital records from your doctor Mr Trusk."

"And what does it say?"

Angelo glared at her, she glared at him back. She exhaled loudly.

"You fainted due to stress."

"And yet, you're still here."

"Mr Trusk, you spent several days at the hospital and you were on the list for an emergency kindey transplant."

"No I wasn't."

"Our sources that say you were."

"Yeah, they would if they are fake." Angelo snapped. "I-wasn't." He broke his words just enough for them to understand.

The lady sneered at him for a while. If she didn't know better she'd have believed him, he was really convincing. She slowly reached for her bag and got out an envelope. She stretched it towards him.

"What is that?"

He asked taking it. Anna walked closer so she could see too. It was enough she had her heart almost in her mouth. Angelo got out a few sheets from the envelope.

"It is a compilation of all your medical reports, including the ones from when you were in Germany."

Angelo exhaled and then squeezed the papers lightly.

"So what?"

He asked trying to retain his confidence.

"Mr Trusk, according to those records, you suffered from FMF for quite a while, and as far as I know, there happens to be no permanent treatment for FMF."

"There isn't."

"So why are you cured?"

"I'm not." The lady held her breath for a moment, staring at the long look of contempt in Angelo's eyes, he didn't bulge at all. She exhaled.

"Mr Trusk, may I remind you that I'm here as a representative of the state, and lying to the state isn't really a good idea."

Anna felt so faint. She couldn't believe this was happening.

"Were you aware all the cctv records of Christopher Hawkins hospital on the seventh of July, the day you were miraculously healed are currently no where to be found sir?"

"That does not sound like my problem, it sounds like the hospital's problem."

"Mr Trusk," the lady moved closer, "I have orders to take a sample of your blood back to base."

"What?" Anna asked, her voice was so shaky and her face was so pale. She was beginning to get so terrified.

"That is with your permission and approval of course."

"And if I refuse?" Angelo asked, he raised a brow. "Are you going to force it out of me? Torture me? "

The woman turned to the man she had come with first. It was like his response had totally caught them off guard but she didn't look surprised. She slowly turned back to Angelo and exhaled.

"No, we won't."

"Good, so now get out."Angelo announced, making sure his look was as stern as his cold yet clear voice. The lady became numb for a while.

"I didn't stutter." Angelo added after he noticed how she still stood there.

"Lauretta! " Angelo yelled and the maid came walking briskly to the door. He didn't take his eyes off her.

"Sir Angelo."

"Show them their way out please." Lauretta walked briskly to the door while Angelo turned quickly to leave pulling Anna behind him.

"Please leave."

He heard Lauretta tell them as he hurried away from the room. Anna's heart felt like it was about to drop out from being so heavy. Her mind was racing from holding all that thoughts, at this rate, she knew she couldn't stop a transition. She had to breathe, she had to think. She had to wrap her head around what had just happened. She stopped walking and pulled her hand quickly away from Angelo's hold, he stopped walking too.

He slowly turned to Anna, he was equally terrified, he didn't know what to say. Seeing her the way she was, so confused, broke his heart even more.

"Anna,"

She took a step back. She was shaking. Did the NSS just make their way to their house? Was she a suspect? Did they really suspect that she had something to do with Angelo's recovery? This was bad, this was really bad.

What have I done?

She kept muttering those words to herself. Angelo exhaled. He took another step closer. He could see how terrified she was.

"Anna."

This time she didn't move. She just stood there almost paralyzed.

"A-Angelo, there is something you have to know."
She said slowly raising her head to look at him. She knew she had to tell him, at that point, she could barely help the situation. She was starting to feel like everything was falling apart, everything she had worked so hard for. She had seen the NSS in action before, and they had killed her entire family, she was terrified as to what was going to become of her and her people if they every got to know. She had to tell him exactly how he got healed first, maybe he could help her find a way if he knew.

"I know."

"No you don't." She shook her head, "you don't understand." she said almost in a whisper.

Angelo exhaled. He took another step closer until he was close enough. He reached for her shaky hands, they wouldn't stop trembling. He held on tight to them and rose his head so he could look straight into her eyes.

" I know."

He repeated.

Anna's hands stopped shaking immediately as tears welled up in her eyes. He knew, Angelo knew she was the one that healed him.

He had always known. Anna watched him for a second like she was trying to read him, like she was trying to see the truth in his eyes.

"W-why didn't you say anything?"
She stammered trying so hard to push the tears back

"I'm so sorry." he said looking into her eyes. Anna could see the tears that hung in his eyes. "I was scared that if I said anything, you were going to run away from me."

"What?"

"This doesnt change anything Anna. I didn't tell you because I didn't want you to think I feel this way about you because I was indebted to you. I was scared that if I told you I knew, you'd ask me to stay away from you and I don't ever want to be away from you. "

Anna starred at him dumbfounded as the tears in her eyes began to fall. She wasn't sure what to say, she wasn't even sure she was supposed to say anything.

"W-what if they find out?" She looked at him. "It's not just about me, it's about everything, it's about my people."

"They won't." he tried to sound convincing.

"Angelo, it's bad enough what they are doing to us, what they did to me. Think of what would happen If they found out."

She was freaking out now and it was harder to keep herself in control. Even after finding out what Angelo knew, it did not make her feel any better. The thought of how things could suddenly go wrong in so many ways taunted her. Her people were never going to forgive her. The taught that she could have already succeeded in ensuring the extinction of her own people-

Anna gasped for air. She was having a panic attack and she didn't know why. She was loosing her mind. Angelo watched her eyes turn blue and her face was starting to wrinkle. She was transitioning without even knowing it.

"Anna," Angelo grabbed her arm while she struggled to grab onto something, anything at all she could see. She snapped at him and growled. Angelo turned out of the hallway after jumping in fright, he had to make sure the NSS officers were gone. He turned back to Anna. She was still trying to breathe.

"Anna Breathe-"

She growled again.

"look at me."

She turned to him and then pushed him. She was so furious, Angelo fell to the ground and bumped his back on the stair rail.

"Angelo."

Anna howled a bit. She was trying so hard to snap out of it, to control herself but it was getting so difficult the more she tried. She didn't want to hurt him, she didn't mean to. She took a step to reach him right before her knee cap cracked, bringing her halfway on her knees.

Angelo needed a second to be right back on his feet. It seemed too much when he saw Anna.

"Anna," He rushed back to her.

"Make it stop please!"
She grabbed on tight to Angelo's shoulders, feeling how her bones snapped every second to take form, Angelo watched her, frightened to witness what was unfolding in his eyes.

"Make it stop." She begged him as her pony tail loosed and her hair began to thicken up and grow to her face.

"Sir Angelo!"

Anna looked away as Lauretta rushed to the stairs. Lauretta looked so scared and confused, she looked around trying to understand why they were both on the ground. Lauretta's jaw dropped when she spotted how Anna's fingers grew to a claw as they dug deep into Angelo's skin. She cringed back in shook, holding on to the neck of her uniform trying to breathe. It was almost if she was about to have a heart attack.

"You can go Lauretta, we're fine." Angelo told the poor woman.

She didn't move.

She glared the blood that was beginning to soak his shirt, traumatized by it . Angelo managed to act like he wasn't hurting, like everything was fine. She looked back at Anna trying so hard to take a glimpse at her face. Angelo noticed right on time and hurriedly stepped closer to Anna, forcing her claws into his shoulders more till He covered her completely.

"Get out!"

Angelo yelled just in time for the lady to snap into consciousness again. She took off at that instant. Anna's breathing began to slow down. Angelo turned to her quickly. He could feel her claws in him begin to dissappear slowly he winced sharply. her face was starting to get back to normal, her hair too. She had stopped transitioning.

Anna was so sweaty admist the cool breeze from the air conditioners that covered the large house. She tried to breathe for a while, looking slowly at Angelo. She was pale and her lips were cracked.

"Hey,"

She heard him whisper to her as she glared at him. "you're okay."

He told her as she noticed the stench of blood that filled the air. It wasn't her blood, she knew that. Anna slowly turned to Angelo's shoulder, she saw how his shirt was almost drenched. She turned back at him in shock, too astonished to even speak and she didn't stop crying.

She collapsed falling into his arms.
