Chapter 3 ~ "Why can't you ever ask me how my day's going?"
Chapter 3: "Why can't you ever ask me how my day's going?"
What was that idiot thinking of? What was his plan? I was almost completely sure he had something in store for me. Something bad. Well, maybe not bad. Just weird.
"Hey, Pres!" my vice-president, Yuki, called. Yeah, I'm the Student Body President.
I stopped so that he could catch up. "Yuki, how's the account book coming along?"
He shrugged his skinny shoulders. He was almost child-sized, with a cute Asian face that could be mistaken as a girl's. That was a sore spot for him. "Why can't you ever ask me how my day's going?" he joked.
I ignored him and kept walking. "Wait, Pres!" He caught up to me. "The accounts are almost done."
"Okay, Yuki, I'll do the rest after school today."
"Not even a 'hello," he said in wonder. "Okay, Pres. I'll see you after school."
I gave him a small nod and a kind smile. "See you, Yuki."
As I kept walking, I noticed Yuki catching up with my secretary, Gerard. "Pres smiled more when she was with Ryan, don't you think?"
My lip trembled for a fraction of a second before I stilled it and kept a straight face. I guess that was true, but was it so bad to want to work hard? Anyway, it's not like I liked Ryan anymore.
"Pres, Pres!" a girl shrieked, coming up to me. Something you should probably know is that in my school, girls are the minority. Only about thirty percent of my school is female, seeing as it used to be an all-boys' school.
Because there were barely any girls, they always looked to me for help, since I was a girl and the Student Body President, so they didn't have to be nervous around me.
"Yeah?" I said kindly.
A group of three girls: Zakia, Isuzu, and Myah, ran up to me eagerly. "Pres, there's a huge box in the way of the art room."
"Ah...why can't you just climb over it?"
Zakia looked at me reproachfully, and gestured down at her mini skirt. We had to wear a uniform, and there were different skirt sizes. I picked the right-above knee-length, but it looked like Zakia had picked mid-thigh length.
"If we do that, the guys will see," she whispered.
I slapped my forehead. "That skirt is really short, Zakia. Next time, wear something longer, okay? These guys are all pigs."
"Your friend Luke's not a pig!" Isuzu stated. "He's ranked number two in academics, best at all sports, and he's so cool!"
He's number two because I'm number one. But cool? That wasn't an adjective I'd use to describe him. "Except he's not friendly with any girls except you," Myah continued.
I rolled my eyes. "Girls, did you hear me? No more mini skirts."
"Okay!" they replied cheerfully.
I smiled kindly at them. "Then show me where this box is."
"Okay!" they all chimed, leading me the way to their art class.
I stared at the huge box that was taller than me. "Where the hell did this come from and who put it here?" I fumed at no one in particular.
The girls giggled. "None of us are strong enough to push it, even all together!" Isuzu informed me.
"Where is your teacher?"
"We don't know."
"And the rest of the class?"
"The rest are boys."
I sighed. "Then they're probably ditching huh?"
"Probably!" Zakia said in that bubbly way of hers.
I tested the weight of the box with my arms. What the hell was in there? A bear? "See, it's too heavy," Isuzu said, nodding her head.
I placed my palms on top of the box and easily hoisted myself up, not minding that I was wearing a skirt, because I always wore shorts underneath.
Perched on top of the box, I swung my legs a little and found that I could rock it forward. "Be careful, Pres!" Myah cautioned worriedly.
"Move out of the way, girls, and cover your ears," I replied calmly. Obediently, they moved off to the side and watched as I brought my legs up and crouched in a third world squat.
"Hey, watch out!" an alarmed, and very distinct male voice, screeched, but it was too late.
I had pushed my body, which caused the box to tip over with a loud crash. Before I could fall on my face, I jumped lightly and landed on the side of the box that was now facing upwards.
I looked up and spotted Luke and his friends watching me with astounded expressions.
"Oh my god, you are so smart!" Zakia, Isuzu, and Myah cheered, crowding around me to give me big hugs. I awkwardly patted their backs and smiled slightly at their constant praise.
The girls went happily into the room, and the boys were now staring at me with horrified expressions. I turned my attention to them.
"Our new gym equipment!" they cried.
"Which idiot would keep it next to an art room?" I yelled, loosing my cool for a moment. "The gym is downstairs!"
"Scary," one of them muttered. "She is super scary!"
"Go move this box now." I scolded.
Luke stayed behind while the rest of his friends lifted the box with many complaints.
"What are you staring at?" I asked.
"Jordy, you're so sweet to the girls!" he cooed. "So cute."
"Shut up!" I said, rolling my eyes. "And tie your tie properly."
"I don't know how. Will you do it for me?"
"I don't believe that you don't know how."
"Jordy, when have you ever seen me with my tie properly on?"
Of course. His messy ties were one of the many things I had to call him up on. "Well, learn how." I adjusted my bag and walked away.
Luke caught up with me. "Can't you just do it for me?"
"Go ask someone else!" I said, elbowing his side. "And stop walking so close to me!"
"But I just love you so much!" he gushed, picking me up as I walked.
"Let go!"
"Jordy-kins!" he whined. "Don't be so mean to me!"
I twisted out of his grip and jumped down. "Go to class, Luke."
"Oh, come on!" He went to grab me in a hug, but I caught hold of his ear and pulled.
"Stop. Following. Me!" I snarled and let go, making my way to the nurse's office.
"Ouch, so violent," he muttered, and continued following me from behind. Instead of yelling at him, I completely ignored him.
"Hey, Nurse Riley," I said politely. "I just came to check if you got your order of needles from the front office."
"Oh!" she replied, surprised. "I haven't yet, actually."
I furrowed my eyebrows. "Well, I'll go get them for you."
She smiled kindly. "Thank you tonnes, pet."
"Isn't she so helpful!" Luke cooed.
Without even looking, I stuck out my fist at Luke's incoming hug and almost laughed at his loud 'oof!'
"Nurse!" he cried, launching himself at Nurse Riley. "Jordy's being so cold to me!"
"Get off," she replied uncaringly.
"Aw, are you jealous of what Jordy and I have? Don't worry, you'll always be my one true love!"
"Get off!" she yelled. I laughed into my hand, and when Luke noticed, he shot me a wink.
"I'll be right back with those needles," I said to her.
"Thank you, Jordan," she replied cheerfully, while pushing Luke away by his head. Which was funny, seeing that he was a foot taller than her.
I made my way to the front office. I was so sure the needles had arrived. I saw them myself. Why hadn't those office assistants sent them over? Oh yeah, they were boys.
Just as I rounded the corner, I caught sight of four boys, with one of them on a ladder, a square box in his hands.
"Oh shite, it's the Pres!" one of them cried in panic.
I watched, borderline amused, as they scrambled around, trying to hide, even though they were in my plain sight.
By accident, one of them knocked the ladder, causing the boy on it to fall down. I almost chuckled, but then saw the contents of the box.
"Hey, are those the nurse's needles-" but then cut myself off as I saw the ladder begin to topple over. They didn't notice, though, too involved in feverishly apologising to me. "Watch out, idiots!" I screamed, running forward and bracing myself as the ladder fell over and hit my body hard.
"Pres!" the boy on the floor said fearfully.
Fuck! Just how heavy is this ladder? I pushed it upright and pressed my hand to my left side. From my shoulder to my waist, it felt like I was on fire. I was definitely going to have some bruises.
"Pres, I'm so sorr--"
"What exactly were you planning to do with those needles and why weren't they with Nurse Riley?" I asked tiredly, pressing my fingers to my temple.
"Um..." one of them mumbled bashfully. "We were gonna hide them on the trophy shelf."
"Why?"
"A-as a prank..."
I picked up the box and ignored their many apologies, walking back to Nurse Riley's office. "Hey," I said, stepping inside. "I've got the needles."
"Oh, thank you Jordan!" she said happily. "You are such a doll!" I handed off the box, but accidentally cringed when she brushed my arm where I was pretty sure a bruise had formed by now.
"Why are you wincing?" Luke asked, in the sharpest voice I've ever heard him use. At least, to me. He was always so disgustingly cheerful.
"I"m not," I shot back. "And why are you still here? Didn't I tell you to go to class?"
"Take off your shirt!" he ordered.
"No!" I retorted. "There's nothing wrong!"
Nurse Riley frowned at me. "Luke's my assistant for the hour, love. Please listen to him and take off your shirt."
"Make him leave first, then!"
She stared at me sternly, the nurse face on. "On the bed, Miss Wolfe."
I sat on the bed angrily, loosening my tie and unbuttoning my shirt. I pulled off the tie and one arm of my shirt, but I couldn't get off the right arm. My left arm was refusing to move to take it off. Much to my embarrassment, Nurse needed to help me.
I heard two sharp intakes of breath.
"What?" I demanded, twisting around to see the damage.
"There's dark bruises all down your left side! What the hell did you manage to do in five minutes?"
"She saved us from being squashed by a fifty pound ladder!"
"What are you guys doing here?" I snapped, staring at the familiar four boys. "Go. To. Class!"
They ran off quickly, but not before blowing me kisses. What the hell?
"Looks like you got yourself some devoted followers," Luke said, chuckling.
"Jordan, did you really?" Nurse asked disapprovingly.
I crossed my arms and huffed. "They would've been squashed if I hadn't."
"Jordan, you're probably a third of their weight. I doubt their injuries would've been worse than yours!" When I remained quiet, she rolled her eyes. "Lucas, wrap her arm and waist while I look for some pain killers."
"It doesn't even hurt!" I cried.
"It doesn't? So you don't mind if I do this?" Luke grinned and slapped my left upper arm.
"Ow! Why would you do that, jerk?"
He laughed and was actually able to dodge my kick as he grabbed a roll of gauze.
Gently, very gently, he began to wrap my arm. So gentle, I was wondering if there was something wrong with him.
"Why do you always do such stupid things, Jordy?" he asked.
"I don't," I muttered indignantly.
He laughed brightly. "Oh, you're so cute, Jordy! Caring about peoples' papercuts more than your own life!"
"I wouldn't have died!"
He paused. "You know what I don't get?"
"What?" For some reason, I thought he would say something useful, because he had put on a serious face, which I almost never saw.
"I don't get how you have hips and a chest when you're so small!"
Oh, for the love of- "This is sexual harassment!"
He just laughed again and went on to wrap my waist. I winced slightly at the contact. Damn, why did it have to hurt so much? But at least it wasn't my right arm.
"Here you are!" Nurse said cheerfully, a glass of water and a painkiller in her hand.
I took them from her and swallowed the pill quickly. "Thanks," I said sullenly, aiming it at both Riley and Luke.
"Now, just lie down and rest, love."
"But I'm not tired," I said. "I have to go to the Student Council room!"
"You're so difficult," Luke muttered, pressing his hand on my shoulder and forcing me down. "Lie down," he said firmly.
I grumbled and turned on my right side, so that my back was facing them. "Now piss off," I told both of them, suddenly feeling very tired.
I heard Luke laugh. "As you wish, your Highness."
