Golden ✔
For the rest of the week, I throw myself into a lazy state. Chica is busy, fixing up her last draft of her student newspaper before she has to send it to the new editor in chief, while also cramming for her big exam at the library. By Wednesday, she's feeling much better.
I haven't heard from Golden at all yet. My mom lives in Florida, and I like to call to check on her, but also to hear her soft voice. She always tells me about her latest ventures in pottery. She's always bored and wants something to occupy her time, but it'll be something totally new next week. She worries about me a lot. I hope she hasn't sold the house to retire yet, and I hope that her new husband keeps a good eye on her. He does seem a lot more passionate the way my mom describes him.
"How are things with you, Bonnie? Have any . . . You know . . . ?" For a moment, I hesitate.
"I'm okay. There's no need to worry about me. Plus, I have a great job, maybe, I haven't heard anything yet." I probably sound excited because she giggled on the other side.
"Bonnie that's nice to hear!" She sounds happy with me. As long as she was happy, so was I. "You really are amazing, but you worry me."
"Mom, I'm fine. Gotta go, bye, love you." Later that evening, I call Chica. It's a brief conversation. In fact, it's not so much a conversation since she does all the talking. However, I like to hear her rant, she's always speaking of how she will fail her exams. She worries too much about stuff like that.
On Friday night, Chica and I are debating what to do with our evening. We want some time away from the stress and from Chica's amount of paperwork. During our heated debate, the doorbell interrupts us. When I check the door, Golden is standing there dressed in casual attire.
"Gold! Why are you here all of a sudden, and how did you know I lived here?" I give him a quick handshake while ushering him inside. He smiles and enters quickly.
"I have amazing news. You got the job! You can start tomorrow, which is why I came to bring your uniform to you in person!" That still doesn't answer it, but who cares. I finally got a job!
"Thank you so much!" He gives me a big smile and looks around the messy dorm.
"No problem, don't forget to bring any medication with you when you come, ok?" I nodded my head and grin happily. Not only do I feel excited, but I think I am too excited for my own good. Golden takes his leave saying a few goodbyes.
Chica says she's gonna make a feast to celebrate. Which means pizza and soda. After we eat, Chica is passed out on the couch. I grab a random blanket off the floor and cover her up. She smiles in her sleep and mumbles a thank you. I walk over to my bed and get under the warm layers.
"Goodnight, Bonnie." I grin at my own words. With my eyes growing heavy, I fall into an endless darkness.
"Don't tell me your gonna be late for your first job. Get up you lazy bum," Chica teased, and I groaned tiredly at her.
"Your uniform is already laid out and breakfast is at six!"
"Wait, what time is it?" Chica beams at me, and points towards the clock. It's 5:36 am! "Chica! Why wake me up so early!" I pouted sitting up on the bedside.
"Because I don't want you being late, plus I have to leave soon to turn in this paper for class. I know what your gonna say and yes, it was due two weeks ago. Nothing like a last minute turn in." She grins and rushes me to the bathroom. She slams the door shut, yelling "shower, now!"
After taking a shower and getting myself fully dressed, she is rushing all over the place. By rushing, I mean things are flying everywhere. When she manages to get her hair just right In the mirror, she gets antsy.
"In the car, now!" She shouts, glancing nervously at her watch. Chica and I are good friends, but I know deep down inside that she's never going to change. She's cute and funny, but she can lose track of time.
She pushes me out the door and locks it behind us. She's more like a sister I never had, at least I think. Chica runs up to the car, starting it, but taking off without me. I guess that now makes me officially abandoned on our front step.
All this means I just have to walk then. I wonder if she will come back. To get to work is like an hour-long walk. Perhaps if I jog I'll make it in time, or stop and rent a bike from a shop one mile from here. Yeah, I can do that! However, in reality, this wasn't going to be easy since I have zero cash.
By some holy miracle, I was able to get a bike. The rental guy let me off this one time, just as long as I paid him later. I see the pizzeria not to far away and only one car is parked up front.
A black, heavy-duty truck sits lifelessly in the empty parking lot. I pedal to the side of the place and lean it against a pole. I walk to the entrance, looking at the silver print. When I push the door open, an alarm goes off.
"Shit, shit, shit," I whisper yelled to myself. A person runs from the back and into the security room. The alarm stops blaring, and the guy with the recognizable red hair and metal hook glares at me.
He walks up to me, "what are you doing here?" His menacing, sharp tone pierces my ears, and his warm breath hits my face. I shift under his gaze that is threatening to kill me.
"I-I umm . . . Work here now . . . S-starting today," I stuttered trying to hide my uncomfortableness. His gaze sharpens and he walks away from me. I can tell he hates me. Definitely.
"Bonnie, you're here! I'm so glad I get to work with you." I spin around to see the same brown vested man that I met before the interview.
