Chapter 7

On the day of the field trip Todoroki was one of the first to wake. He was in the kitchenette area, plugging in a coffee machine.

"What the hell are you doin' icy hot?" Bakugo asked, wiping his eyes tiredly.

"I could ask the same of you. You're not usually up this early," Todoroki replied calmly.

"I asked first dammit," Bakugo snapped, though his voice was tired and rough rather than loud and fiery.

"We're not having breakfast before we leave since we're leaving early. Which means the dining room wont have coffee... and well, I suppose you know better than anyone how Terra can be without it," Todoroki answered, and they both shuddered at the thought. There had only been a few instances where people had dared to provoke her without coffee and none of them had ended well. The whole class knew now.

"Yeah, I was just gonna make breakfast to go. I know the teach said it would be provided, but he's not the most reliable guy and with this damn school you never know if they'll drop us in a desert and make us hunt for some y'know?"

"Fair enough," Todoroki agreed. When the coffee finished he asked, "she takes her coffee black with two sugars right? With just a small amount of ice so it cools down enough for her to drink it right away?"

Bakugo thought silently for a moment, "How the hell should I know? She didn't drink the stuff when we were kids. And when shes getting her food I'm getting mine, I don't watch her do it."

"Interesting," Todoroki said, mostly to himself as he began mixing sugar and coffee into a mug. Still somewhere in his voice their was an odd tone, a tone that said 'I'm surprised you didn't notice' and 'I know something about her that you don't'.

"The hell do you mean 'interesting' damn halfn'half?" Bakugo snarled. He knew full well what the other boy had meant, he just wanted to know if he'd actually say it.

Todoroki looked up at him so their eyes met on a silent challenge, but before he could say anything Yaoyorozu whisper yelled in warning, "Quit shouting you idiot she's coming!"

With an angry scoffed Bakugo turned back to the small stove and finished what he was cooking. Moments later Terra came by, nearly sleepwalking to the scent of good food and coffee. She paused in front of them, not totally conscious of what she was doing.

Without saying a word, Todoroki gingerly held out the coffee to her. Making sure she had the coffee secured with both hands and letting go. As she drank, she almost transformed before their eyes. Her posture straightened, the bags under her eyes lessened dramatically. Her eyes opened wide and awake, and when she pulled the cup from her lips she was smiled.

"Wow! Thanks Shoto! That's a really good cup of coffee! How'd you know just the way I like it?" She asked, back to her usual cheerful self.

He shrugged nonchalantly and said, "lucky guess."

Kacchan turned to face them, bumping into Todoroki slightly, with a fork with food on it and his other hand cupped beneath it in case anything fell. "Here Terra, try this."

Terra leaned forward to take a bite but before she could he pulled it back chuckled, "Hey wait a damn second. You just watched me pull this off a pan on the oven and it's still steaming hot. You gotta blow on it first, dummy."

Terra playfully stuck out her tongue at him in protest, before blowing gently on the food before biting it off the fork.

Here eyes went wide and her cheeks flushed slightly, "Wow Kacchan! That's amazing! Even better than the last time you made it for me!"

"Well I've had a few years to practice so there better be some damn improvement," he said with a grin. "Here come dish up. There's enough for you too Icy Hot." Todoroki wanted to deny it, but the food smelled and looked amazing.

"No way," Ashido gawked as she and a few other girls were kneeling on the couch cushions so they could peek over the back and see into the kitchenette. "Don't tell me she's got them both hooked!"

"She's a romantic genius! We must study her ways!" Hagakure declared, her uniform clothes the only way to know that she was also on the couch.

"Or shes entirely oblivious herself," Tsu offered. They watched as Todoroki reached around her to grab the spatula so he could dish up.

"There's no way she doesn't see that!" Yaoyorozu disagreed.

"Ah but you forget," Aoyama sighed, dramatically leaning back into his chair, "Love is blind!"

"They'd actually be really cute," Uraraka added as she joined the conversation.

"Yeah, Todoroki rarely opens up to people," Yaoyorozu nodded.

"What? I meant her and Bakugo," Uraraka said in confusion. "Shes the only one that could get a leash on him."

"Kinky," Ashido giggled.

"You know that's not what I meant! I mean he's so much calmer around her, even if he's still a jerk, its toned down. He doesn't blow up as much."

"I agree with Momo," Tsu added. "She and Todoroki are already so close even though they didn't have the years like her and Bakugo. I think if they had more time they'd really be something."

"But those years are exactly why they'd be such a great couple! Uraraka's right, only she could handle Bakugo," Hagakure, her shirt sleeve flailing for emphasis.

"Then you know how we fix this right?" Their pink skinned friend said with an excited devilish grin.

"Oui, we provide time for both boys to get to know her and make their moves! Then when she decides we'll know who's right!" Aoyama clapped his hands together.

"Oh it's on!" Hagakure said eagerly.

"Doesn't it seem mean to play with people's hearts this way?" Uraraka asked.

"On the contrary," Yaoyorozu told her, "really we're just trying to help by finding the best match for her and ending the tension between the two boys as soon as possible."

"Yeah right Vice Rep, you just want to win," Tsu said, but was ignored as Yaoyorozu didn't want to admit it.

"We start right now! Team Yaoyorozu, Tsu, and Aoyama vs Team Uraraka, Hakagure and Ashido!" she cheered.

"What are they on about now?" Tokoyomi asked as a few others joined them.

"No idea," Ojiro asked, his tail flicking anxiously.

"Beats me," Sato shrugged with his muscular shoulders.

"Girls are confusing," Sero sighed.

"The bus is here," Shoji announced, using his multiple arms to pick up bags.

Yaoyorozu leaned close to her 'team' and whispered, "This is our chance!"

Everyone gathered their belongings and lined up to get on. Terra was having a discussion about favorite foods with Todoroki, Bakugo, and Kirishima towards the front of the line. As people began to board. Yaoyorozu called Todoroki out of line, claiming that she had packed too much and she needed help with her bag. Tsu called back Rikuto, saying that she'd misplaced her phone. Aoyama then ushered the line inside, pouting that the line was taking so long.  This sent Bakugo and Kirishima towards the back of the bus, and left pace for the last few towards the front of the bus. The seat that Bakugo and Kirishima had left for Rikuto was filled by Yaoyorozu, as it was still near Hakagure who she claimed she needed to talk to. Rikuto was a little disappointed there wasn't more space by her friends, but was relieved that at least she'd have Todoroki to keep her company. With how early they were leaving, there was no doubt that the ride would take hours.

After hours of driving, talking and laughing, the majority of the bus had fallen asleep and the awake few were talking in hushed whispers. Todoroki looked around and decided that no one near them was awake to hear and others weren't paying attention. It was time to ask Terra something that had been eating at him for a long time.

"Hey Terra," he said in a soft voice. "When we met, you said something about not liking my father. That our parents knew each other or something? What was it?"

"Oh, you didn't talk to him?" Terra asked, suddenly a bit concerned.

He shook his head and replied, "We don't talk about much."

Terra chewed her lip nervously, "I thought you already knew. I don't know if this is a good time for this? And I don't want to make things weird between us. You're friendship means a lot to me."

Todoroki chuckled to hid his insecurity, "You're making me nervous. Still, whatever disagreement out parents had, I'm sure we can put it behind us."

Terra took a deep breath and glanced around to make sure no one was listening in before saying, "Okay, well... years and years ago, before your parents married. Your father made an um... arrangement with my mom's father. A quirk marriage. It was something that was decided without my mom agreeing to anything, and when she heard about it, she ran away with her high school sweetheart. Instead of realizing it's not what my mom wanted, your dad caused a lot of trouble for my family."

Here Terra paused, her voice getting even quieter. She looked down to her hands as she continued. "Her relatives were so mad at her for 'bringing shame to the family' or whatever that they hunted her down. Some of them even became villains. They killed my dad when I was young, but my mom managed to get away with me. It's why we moved around so much when I was a kid. Honestly it's possible they're still trying to find us. Todoro- Shoto, your dad isn't to blame for everything, but he certainly made it all worse. If he would have backed off, maybe things wouldn't have been so bad..."

Shoto looked to her, a million thoughts swirling around in his head. For a moment he imagined a younger Terra, growing up as he did, pushed beyond her limits and forced to grow stronger. His monster hadn't just hurt him and his mom, but Terra and her mom as well. For all he wanted to say all he could manage was, "I'm sorry."

Terra looked up into his eyes, seeing the pain and worry hidden there. For a moment he didn't want to meet her gaze, worried that there would be anger or resentment on her face, but there was none. Instead there was understanding and warmth.

"Don't be sorry Shoto," she told him, taking his hand gently. "None of it is your fault. Most of it wasn't even you're father's, and even if it was, you're not him. You're Shoto. You're my friend." She gave his hand a reassuring squeeze. He couldn't help but smile back at her. His thoughts and emotions were confused, but overall what mattered was that she was right. He was not his father, and she was his friend.

"Are you related to Midoriya or something?" He asked suddenly.

"Huh?" She asked, giggling at the randomness of the question. "What do you mean?"

"Both of you said similarly comforting words. There's a certain likeness about the two of you," he shrugged.

"Well we were friends for years. Something was bound to rub off," she also gave a small shrug.

"At least it wasn't Bakugo's explosiveness," he said after a moment of thinking, making her laugh loudly.

"Everyone, start waking the others up and collecting your things. We're nearly there," Aizawa announced, still within his sleeping bag.
