Chapter 17
Terra took a deep breath to focus, trying to remember her previous nightmares, trying to find a good place to start. As her minds raced through memories, flashes of what she remembered danced around them.
Almost always, it ended with Terra and Reiji dead, and reminding her that she could have saved them. That it was all her fault.
Various semi-transparent versions of her previous classmates appeared around them. Haru reaching out with her half destroyed face, Reiji with the hole in his chest, lightning flashes, Haru's death with the cement villain crushing her skull, finding Reiji's body with a hole skewered through his heart, all while various voices of their classmates whispered, "your fault" "it's all your fault" all around them.
"Hey cut that out," Bakugo told Terra, his voice cut into her focus and the images around her got dimmer and almost faded. "He said to start at the beginning."
Terra looked at him, shaking off the negative feelings of the nightmares. "Thank you," she said with a nod and closed her eyes, resharpening her focus. "Okay, so most of my nightmares start with Haru or Reiji, and then kind of turn bad?"
More images swirled around them of the purple haired girl and the orange haired boy. Most of them had a happier tone and were mixed with soft variations of laughter. Finally Terra' s mind settled on one and the image molded the area around them. They stood in a building that only Terra recognized. A large screen above them was listing scores at an agonizingly slow speed. Terra remembered being so on edge that day. She had known that she had done well in the Hero's course entrance exam but still a part of her worried that she hadn't done well enough.
Calderon spoke up, "Good, this seems like a fully formed memory. You need to absorb yourself into it completely, so you may not be able to see us anymore. I know it may seem scary, but it's the only way to draw the villain out. We will still be here even if you cant see us."
Terra turned to him, surprised to see that already their faces were starting to blur and their bodies were starting to blend in with the crowd in the background. She turned her attention back to the screen, and gasped when she felt someone grasp her hand. She looked down to see a purple haired girl grasp her hand. Haru looked up at her and said, "I'm so nervous!" She seemed so real. The memory was so vivid that Terra could feel the girl practically shaking.
"Hey come on now," Reiji's said from Terra's other side. "Believe in yourself. I'm sure you made it."
For some reason whoever had put together the display had decided to be particularly cruel, listing off people with the lowest scores- those who hadn't made it- first. The three of them held their breath, praying that their names wouldn't show before the 20th spot. If their names showed before that point, then it meant that they didn't get into the program.
The 25th and 24th place names appeared, not theirs. Shouts of frustration were heard faintly in the background.
23rd and 22nd names appeared, also not theirs. Someone who's dream of being a hero shattered started crying loudly. Terra gripped Reiji's hand subconsciously, squeezing it tightly.
The 21st name wasn't theirs. They had made it. Haru's eyes filled with tears. "I did it! I actually made it in!"
"I knew you would," Terra told her with smile. Haru's name came up 18th, putting her towards the bottom of the class, but she didn't mind.
"Tch, did you seriously think you wouldn't make it into the hero course? Really Terra?" Bakugo scoffed. Terra didn't respond, her eyes turned back to the board, waiting for her name and place in the class to show.
"She can't hear us," Todoroki realized.
"That's correct! She's deep within her memories now. Whoever is causing the nightmares should appear soon to cause trouble. We should be on the look out for anything ordinary!" Calderon instructed.
Terra's name and placement came in. She was second in the class, the only one in front of her being Reiji.
"Yes!" She cheered. Reiji cheered loudly, scooping her up in his arms and spinning her around causing her to laugh. Her laughter cut short- part of her realized how real this memory had become. Not only could he lift her, but she could smell his shampoo.
"Hey, if those things can touch her, and things go bad..." Bakugo trailed off in realization.
"Then they can hurt her," Todoroki realized also.
"Yes, and if we're caught off guard, they can turn on us also. So stay sharp," Aizawa told them.
Terra could feel the same eagerness and joy course through her the same as it had that day. Reiji set Terra back on her feet and looked down at her with a smile. "Hey, you stay here and defend the wounded. I'm going to check that building for others."
Terra's eyes widened. Those were Reiji's words but they weren't from this memory. Before she could respond he wrapped her up in another hug. As he did the word around them twisted and distorted until they were in an entirely different scene. They were outside the school, surrounded by smoke and burning rubble. Terra knew where she was instantly. She choked on some of the smoke as Reiji let go of her and ran off. He turned back to say, "I'll see you soon!" before running off.
"What the hell?" Bakugo growled in surprise he could smell the smoke and things burning. Todoroki took in the scene around them. Villains were and bodies were everywhere. He turned his head away from one particularly mangled corpse. He could barely stand the site of it once. How many times had Terra lived this nightmare?
Terra slumped, struggling to stand. The full force of the pain and fatigue she had felt towards the end of that fight taking it's toll on her. She breathed heavily and struggled with it. Struggling to remember what part of the nightmare she was in, she was hit full force by a green villain covered in spikes. She punched him away exactly as she had before.
"I can sense three," Calderon said, "Three beings besides us that don't belong here. Only two are faint. I can't tell why. I would assume that two have mind manipulation quirks. And they are very close. Be on guard."
Bakugo's eyes went wide, seeing Terra full of injuries and struggling to stay standing. "Hey Terra, they're not real. You have to save your strength for the real fight." He reached out to touch her, but is hand moved through her as if she were only part of the memory.
"She's too far into the memory, we won't be able to reach her that way," Todoroki realized.
"This is too dangerous. With the right quirk the villains could control everything that happens here. We should retreat and try a different way," Aizawa said to the other pro.
"In other circumstances I would agree," Calderon said, "but we gave Ms. Rikuto a sedative to help her get here. With that plus the villain's quirk, it's very unlikely that we'll be able to wake her."
"We have no choice then," Aizawa sighed, "Then lets focus on finding the real villains." A memory of a villain ran through him as he spoke.
"That is going to be more difficult than anticipated," Calderon said, as they overlooked a battlefield full of villains.
The rhino villain tackled Terra to the ground. Another villain with snake arms chuckled tauntingly as Terra struggled.
"Dammit," Bakugo swore, forcing himself to tear his gaze away from Terra as she grew more desperate.
Todoroki was scanning the battlefield. Because Terra was so focused on the woman with snake arms that was approaching, most of the rest of the world around them blurred slightly. It wasn't remembered as well. Suddenly his eyes locked with a woman with teal hair. She stared him down, everything about her was crystal clear. She grinned at him and waved, the memory of a villain running through her like smoke.
"There!" Todoroki shouted, sending ice shooting forward.
Suddenly the word around them started to tremble, and the ground beneath Bakugo, Todoroki, Aizawa, and Calderon gave way, sending them falling into darkness below. Bakugo flailed, trying to see Terra. He couldn't see her, he could only hear her pain-filled shouting, "Don't Haru!"
Terra, completely engulfed by her memory, watched again in horror as Haru sacrificed herself again by forming a protective shield around Terra instead of herself. As again the stone spikes that Terra had sent shooting forward hit their mark, but still to late. As again the cement ball dropped on Haru's head, crushing her skull and killing her.
"HARU! NO!" Terra screamed in agony, tears rushing down her face.
Suddenly, the memory froze around her. Terra was suddenly aware that this was a dream, something that had already happened. She looked around her wildly, the snakes were stunned but frozen, as if someone had hit a pause button. The Rhino villain with his massive frame still had her pinned down, but he too was frozen in time. With tears rushing down her face Terra craned her neck to look around, trying desperately to figure out what was happening.
Suddenly a woman with teal hair stepped into view. She leaned down closer to Terra said, "Does it hurt?" Then after seeing a few more tears fall she straightened and added, "Good."
+++++++++++++++ Author's Note: +++++++++++++++
Hey guys! Sorry I'm the worst! I honestly thought after things cooled down I'd have time to write more, but when I finally found some time I lost a lot of the motivation. So I don't want to make any promises, but at least for now, I've found it again and am excited to write. Hopefully you can look forward to more consistent updates? Again no promises. Looking back I've got a lot of fixes (though mostly spelling errors) to correct in previous chapters, so my next few updates may be editing?
Anyways, thanks to everyone for getting this far! Thank you for your patience! Thanks for not getting mad when I disappeared! Hopefully I'll have another one ready soon!
