Chapter 10
The next morning Terra woke on the couch with the sun pouring through the windows. On the table in front of her was a small thermos of coffee, along with a note that said if she was ready, she should find one of the camp members who would take her to join the rest of the class. She dreaded the idea of facing everyone. How could she face them after last night? For a moment she considered curling up in the blankets instead and sleeping away her problems.
Reiji and Haru's faces flashed in her mind. No, she couldn't let this stop her from training. She needed to get stronger, so she could prevent something so horrible from ever happening again. It's what Reiji and Haru would have wanted. She owed it to them.
Still she rushed to get ready before she changed her mind. She drained the coffee, thankful for the thurmos that kept it warm before hurrying off back to her room. She grabbed a change of clothes and moved to the showers. As she lifted off her shirt, she noticed a pain in her side. Looking closer she saw that a bruise had started forming, similar to the one that she'd gotten that night when the rhino villain tackled her. Had she thrashed into something and bruised herself during the nightmare? She hoped it had been something by the bed rather than someone trying to wake her.
Without wasting too much time she finished getting ready. Back in the common area there was a hall that lead to a kitchen area. There she found a woman who worked at the camp, who found food for her, then lead her to a small golf cart and drove some distance away to where the others were practicing. She was dropped off next to Aizawa, who was watching the others practicing.
"You're here. Good," he nodded in approval, "Okay, find some space over there and work with your quirk. Focus on distance and expanding your quirk. I'll call everyone back for lunch when it's time." Terra nodded and hopped back in the cart and was dropped off some distance away. The ground was fat and stretched for miles before her, perfect for training her quirk. Looking to her right she could barely make out the figure of another student. Large spikes of ice sprang up near him, so it must have been Todoroki. All of the students were spaced so people practicing distance wouldn't hurt anyone.
Terra took a breath and focused, shooting stone spikes up as far forward as she could. They shot up instantly, the ones farthest away not shooting up at the same time as the closer ones as her signal for the ground to shift took a while to travel and wasn't quite as strong. It wasn't a bad distance, but she needed to work on her distance. She pulled off her shoes, so the signal could move straight into the ground rather than moving through them. The earth always moved better if she was in contact with it directly.
She prepared for trying to make a figure in the distance, focusing on making a shape instead of random spikes, but a flash of green caught her eye. It was his quirk and in an instant he was by her side. She avoided eye contact with him as he moved from a crouch to standing up as the green faded away. She just wanted to train and dreaded the though of him asking her to explain last night.
"Terra," he said nervously, "Um... my quirk doesn't really allow for distance, so I was wondering if I could train with you, dodging your distance attacks. Aizawa thought it was a good idea."
Terra internally sighed with relief. He must have realized that she didn't want to talk about it. This was his way of checking that she was okay without forcing her to open up if she wasn't ready. Typical Deku. She grinned enthusiastically and replied, "Of course! Start by the end of those spikes, and try to reach me. I'll try and to tag you with stone."
Deku's eyes flashed with relief seeing that Terra, for the most part, was okay. He'd been worried that she would retreat into herself and hide from everyone. He knew that she would open up when she was ready. He coated himself with his Full Cowling and dashed off. Terra crouched to the ground and pressed her hands into the dirt. As long as she didn't need her hands to defend or attack, they controlled the ground better.
"Ready?" She barely heard Deku from his distance, "Here I come!" He shot forward dodging between the already made spikes as the ground around him jumped up from Terra's attacks. The ones that came at him were different from the spikes, they were fists rather than points, and reached for him rather than simply springing straight up. Getting hit by one of the stone fists would hurt a lot, but wouldn't be as bad as the spikes, which could cut through him.
As Deku zigged and zagged Terra figured out his pattern. She managed to hit him with a stone fist, knocking him to the ground. He jumped up instantly, clutching his side. He was hurt but nothing was broken.
"Got you!" Terra taunted when she realized he was okay.
"I'm coming again!" He told her, running again. She managed to tag him two more times before he was too close for Terra to keep her hands planted on the ground. She stood up, still sending fist from her feet and picking up stone for her gauntlets. Soon he was within range of her. He kicked out. She put up a stone wall in front of her just in time. He broke through it, but didn't touch her. She lashed out again, but his reflexes were faster than she expected and he kicked her legs out from under her. She fell back, landing on her but.
"Got you!" He laughed, panting heavily.
"This time," she chuckled, breathing just as heavily. Using so much control at such a distance had drained her energy much faster than she'd thought she would. She would have to build up her endurance if she wanted to become a great hero.
"Go again?" Deku asked. For a moment she looked at him in surprise. Both of them were exhausted, but he was willing to push them. He was exactly as determined as the Deku she'd always known, but so much stronger now than she'd ever though he would be. With effort she pushed herself up from the ground, agreeing to go again, but Aizawa called everyone in, sending the lady one the golf cart to pick everyone up so they could eat.
They met under a large tent with wooden tables, for the first time since last night Terra stood before her classmates. She was overwhelmed with insecurities, unsure of how they would react or what she should say. She took a deep breath to try to prepare herself to be bombarded with questions as Uraraka approached and a few of them turned to Terra.
"Man it's hot out there!" Uraraka said with a smile, she held a water bottle out to Terra. "Water?"
Relieved that they were going to give her space, Rikuto took the water gratefully and said, "Yeah, thanks!"
"Everyone please make sure that you stay hydrated!" Iida was announcing to the class.
"Food's this way!" Deku said, taking Terra's hand and leading her towards a table with food and they formed a line to dish up. Uraraka asked Deku how their training was and they got wrapped up in their own conversation as Todoroki stood in like behind Rikuto.
"Terra," he said hesitantly and she groaned internally, seeing that he had something to say.
"Yes?" she asked.
"I know what it's like to want to keep all of your emotions in check and not share them with people, so I'm only going to bother you with this once. It's not healthy to try to handle everything on your own, and I'm here if you need someone to talk to," he said gently.
She got the feeling that he had a lot that he was keeping inside too, and would probably understand more than most of their classmates. Instead of sounding like he knew better or pestering her about wanting to know, his words were actually a bit of a relief.
"I'm not really ready to talk about things right now. A lot of it is stuff I have to sort out on my own, but thanks Shoto. Your words mean a lot. I promise I'll come to you if I need someone," she told him, giving his shoulder a gentle squeeze.
He gave a small smile and said, "That's good to hear."
Terra laughed as she turned back to the line, making his eyes widen in surprise before she said, "Now which of us sounds like Deku?"
"What about me?" Deku asked, hearing only his name as they reached the food. Terra assured him that it was nothing as they dished up. Before they could sit Bakugo approached them. Terra turned to hims with a smile and an excited 'hey!' on her lips, but it died there when she saw his expression. He was angry, and it was very evident by the fire in his eyes and snarl on his face.
"We need to talk," he glared down at her.
Todoroki who was still by Terra's side stepped forward and said, "I think you need to give her space and go calm down."
Bakugo turned his glare onto the other boy and snarled, "I don't give a damn about what you think, halfnhalf."
Terra put her hand on Todoroki's shoulder and said, "It's okay Shoto. Could you take my plate to the table for me? I'll be back in a minute." Todoroki looked from her to Bakugo then back again before nodding, taking her plate and saying nothing. Bakugo looked to Terra then to the ground before turning his back to her and walking away from everyone else. Terra pauses for only a moment before following him. She'd never seen him so intense before.
He paused after they were far enough away from their nosy classmates so that none of them could hear. Without turning to face her he clenched his fists and said, "Why didn't you tell me?" His voice was gruff, but his tone was soft, almost more sad than mad, "Why didn't you trust me with what you were going through? Aren't we friends?"
"Of course we're friends. I thought that it was something that I could handle on my own," she answered.
"You shouldn't have had to," his voice broke a bit. He glanced back at her, his eyes expressing pain and he knew it so he turned away from her again, "Why didn't you trust me enough to say anything? Why would you lie and tell me you were fine?"
His pain stabbed her in the heart. She'd handled this whole mess all wrong and now she was hurting her friends. Though no one had said anything to her, she knew they were all concerned. She stepped forward and reached out to him, wanting to lay a comforting hand on his shoulder but hesitating. Tears formed in her eye. "Kacchan I- I'm sorry. I didn't mean to lie to you. I just.... i didn't want you to worry. I didn't want you to see me differently. I didn't want you to think I was weak because I couldn't even fight off bad dreams."
"You idiot," he snapped making her flinch back. He spun around to face her, but instead of continuing to yell he wrapped his arms around her and spoke gently, "Why would you think I'd see you any differently? You went through hell, of course there was going to be side effects. Don't keep shit from me 'cause you think I'll worry, dummy. Worrying is what friends do. You should have said something. You shouldn't have lied about how you were doing. You didn't have to go through all that alone."
She wrapped her arms around him to return the hug and said, "I'm sorry Kacchan."
"Don't be sorry, you brat," he told her, giving her a comforting smile, "Just, don't lie to me again."
His smile was contagious and made her smile too, the wateriness in her eyes fading as she said, "I promise."
Some distance away Uraraka and Yaoyoruzu were watching through binoculars, watching as Bakugo and Terra broke their hug and began walking back to their food.
"What did they say?" Yaoyoruzu asked in a hushed whisper.
"I don't know, but clearly we're winning!" Uraraka said in a victorious whisper-shout.
"That didn't mean anything! That was a make up hug! Clearly they were fighting," Yaoyoruzu disagreed.
"Betting on who gets together is fun, but you guys are taking this to a creepy level," Tsu told the two girls.
After lunch was more training. Their location was moved to an equally large space, but this time the terrain was slightly different. Instead of a flat space, they were on large hills covered with trees and the students weren't spaced quite so far apart. This time Terra was paired with Todoroki so they could test their distance quirks against each other. His ice moved faster and could reach a bit farther in the same amount of time, but Terra's rocks were more under control and could still be manipulated more at that distance. They trained like that until the sun began to set. Aizowa shouted for everyone to start making their way to the top of the hill so they could be collected and brought back to camp. Exhausted from training all day, most of the students groaned at the idea of climbing such a steep slope.
At the top of the hill the waiting cart driver shouted for them to all hurry up, but with an urgency in her voice. She also shouted something to Aizawa that they couldn't make out, but pointed across the ravine to the top of the other side. The students looked to where she was pointing and saw four silhouettes looking over them. Two of them were very large and muscular, one of them was very large and very fat, the last was smaller and female, but she drew out a large sword bigger than herself. She pointed the weapon at the students, and the others charged forward.
"Villains!" Kaminari gasped.
"Don't fight unless your lives depend on it," Aizowa shouted down to his students. "All of you get to the carts. Iida, run back to camp and get some other heroes." He put on his goggles and unwrapped his large scarf before using it to get to the other side of the ravine. "Go now!"
