Old habits
"You have a good night pow pow, get home safe," Viktor limped behind the prodigy with his crutch, making sure to give the fellow Zaunie a touch on the shoulder while she was putting papers away for them.
"Thanks v, are you feeling better today?" Powder touched his hand on her shoulder before he could go to far.
"I'm feeling fine, you must not worry about me," the older man looked at her but there was a slight sadness behind his eyes, they felt like they were the only ones from zaun to have any sort of respect in piltover for simply existing. It made it hard for Jayce and Mel to understand at some times but having each other eased the lonesome, but powder feared there would be a day he would leave her behind against his will.
Viktors illness motivated her to work harder.
"I'll worry all I want, but you go rest vik, I got tonight handled," powder leaned back in her chair as her braids fell behind her and trickled on the floor like rope.
"I'll see you tomorrow dear," he nodded with a smile and powder pouted a little but waited for him to leave the lab, pulling her legs up on the chair and held her body in a ball.
"He's okay, we're all okay," powder whispered to herself but there was a hissing whisper in her ear.
"Why would he lie? He's been sick but it's not getting worse," she defended sharply as her brows furrowed.
"Mel didn't lie either, she worried about me, we all worry about people we care about, it's family," powder pulled a braid from the ground and played with the ends of her blue hair.
"She won't leave me," powder stood in a split second, clenching her fists tightly. "None of them would,"
"NO THEY WONT!" She snapped spinning around, the chair fell to the ground. Silence was surrounding her as she stood alone in the lab.
Powder looked around with a panic in her eyes, her breath shaking as she stared out the window to her side.
"Oh look at the jinx losing her fuckin' mind," powder snorted smacking the ball of her palm on the side of her head.
"I should head home too, progress day is tomorrow I can't be losing it again," she whispered turning back to the desk, organizing her blue prints and books, she just needed a day of no stress, holidays work for that kind of stuff right?
Powder sighed turning off the light to the lab and locked up, shoving the key back in her pocket and walked down the long hall by herself. She picked at the beds of her nails humming a familiar song to ease her nerves.
"Powder you've been sleeping less and sneaking out more, if you need someone to talk to-" "I don't have anything to talk about!" Powder argued with Jayce as Viktor sat in his chair on the side.
"You said your nightmares have been coming back more and more, obviously something has been bothering you," Viktor pursed his pale lips as he leaned against his crutch.
Powder sat on the desk with her ankles crossed. Not looking at her brother figures.
"I was gonna go to the lanes," she mumbled. Jayce looked at her wide eyed.
Was. She was going to go. She never did.
When she stood on that bridge something in her fell out of place. Like an old memory. That bridge separated her from her old life and to now. She could've gone at any point but she never crossed that bridge. The one her parents died on. The one that she screamed and sobbed as a child when she was dragged to a jail cell. The lanes had nothing for her.
But walking through piltovers streets gave her some sort of peace at mind like another time in her life. Somehow she felt safer in the moonlight. It was a vulnerable time for people and the quietest.
Powder got home, the large kitchen and livingroom were connected but empty, Jayce and his mother were already in bed and asleep. She went to her own room and closed locked door behind her.
"Our homes are built of stone," powder sang softly to herself as she took her boots off.
"So come, across the river, my friends," she hummed flopping in her own chair and swirling to go to her desk. Picking up a small knife and carved a little into the wood.
Powder rested her arms over the desk, laying her head down with a quiet sigh, tomorrow will be better, she will be better. Her life now is a second chance, she just had to believe in herself, or some shit like that Jayce would say.
It was getting late, powder closed her eyes and let herself relax to sleep, they were right she wasn't sleeping as much anymore, usually Viktor would stay up with her in the lab but with tomorrow being a big day they all had to rest up.
But a sound outside her window made her awake again, she powder sat up and looked at the window, the curtains were open so she stared outside. Listening. But it was quiet again. Except for a soft buzzing sound that wasn't familiar. The blue hair girl grabbed her self made gun and got out of her chair, slowly walking to the window to see what was making a noise.
She opened the window and leaned out to see the sides of the building, they lived in the third story of the large building, looking over some of the city. She frown not understanding where the sound came from. Maybe she was just crazy.
Powder left the window open in case she heard it again, she turned her back to go to her desk again and just like that she heard the wirling buzzing sound and it felt closer now. She turned around and gasped a scream when a person on some sort of board crashed through the window and two more followed behind them.
"Shit!" Powder raised the gun and shot off at the intruders but they were fast, missing them but that didn't stop her from pulling the trigger when one got in her face, grazing the side of the persons head and they ducked down.
"Jayce!" Powder screamed desperately and ran to her locked door.
One of the intruders were right behind her and tried to put a cloth over her mouth but she pulled the trigger of her gun again and this time it hit them and they fell to the ground with a cry.
"No no no!" Powder fell against the door trembling when one of the persons checked on their injured and the other came at her.
"Don't hurt her!" The masked person called with a deep voice that didn't seem like their own. "She comes with us,"
"No im not!" Powder sneerer lifting the gun and shot again, hitting their arm, this one didn't seem as easy to take down.
"Don't touch me!" She grabbed an old weapon that was under her bed, a small decorated bomb.
"Powder don't-" the intruder yelled and she ripped the pin out and threw it at them. It was only a smoke bomb but it made it hard to breath in the smaller room.
Jayce sat up with a gasp hearing a bomb go off and jumped out of bed without a second to spare.
"Pow pow? Hey Pow are you okay?" Jayce speed down the hall to her room and tried to open the door but it was locked still. He pressed his ear against the door to hear multiple people inside and a gunshot.
"Powder!" Jayce yelled with his heart dropping. He backed up a few steps and slammed his body against the door trying to break it open.
"Powder hang in there!" Jayce screamed in desperation as he kicked the door.
Powders ears rung as she stared off into the smoke, struggling to keep her head up as she tried to find the ones that broke into her room. Hearing Jayce's voice but couldn't hear his words. Jayce was there.
The masked intruder walked through the smoke with a watch fob swinging at his side, he had a cloth in his hand as he made his way to her. Powder whimpered trying to get away, she pulled herself up to her feet and grabbed the door handle but he grabbed her and forced the cloth against her mouth and nose.
"Jayce!" Powder cried with tears in her eyes elbowing back into the person. But the cloth got to her and powder finally lost consciousness. She dropped to the floor but her hand unlocked the door finally.
Jayce threw the door open as he saw the intruders in the girls room now, one standing over the unconscious powder and two where helping each other escape.
"Get away from her!" Jayce roared as he dropped to the ground to cover powder with his own body.
The intruder backed away surprised by the older man protecting powder, both on the ground as he was trying to wake her up.
"We gotta go," the leader told the others seeing the mission was a fail.
Jayce panted in shock as he held powder close to his body, patting her face to wake her up but it didn't work.
"Pow pow it's okay your safe, just wake up kiddo, please," Jayce hyperventilated holding her. She felt so small in his arms, when he looked at her he could only see the little girl that he took in seven years ago.
Jayce heard the others escape but didn't care enough to pull himself away from his girl. He wanted to hunt them down but powder needed him now.
"I got you pow pow," Jayce grunted as he pulled her up in his arms and carried her limp body out of the Smokey room.
