9. Cough Medicine
Akaashi stirred, hearing a snore that didn't belong to him. He whined softly as the taste of his venom touched the top of his tongue. He opened his eyes to look for his bowl but instead an expanse of wings spread over his couch and floor. He froze up, terrified.
Bokuto shifted in his sleep, wings fluttering a bit. He yawned and held a pillow close to his chest.
Akaashi sat up and found his bowl, pressing the venom into the container. He watched Bokuto closely, making sure he was actually asleep and not watching him or being creepy.
He eased up and poured the venom into a jar to be brought to his mother. Bokuto stayed still, just sleeping normally.
Akaashi tidied up a bit and got out pots and pans, wanting to make something to eat. He grabbed a few mushrooms from a jar and peppers. He hated eggs so he just watched as the vegetables simmered. He did find some onions and two carrots and realized that he needed to shop again. He didn't have much money left for now so he would be careful. His parents supplied him with a bit of money and so did his writings. He'd need to ask for paper soon.
Bokuto groaned softly, snapping Akaashi out of his thoughts of money. His wings shook lightly in a stretch and he yawned loudly. "That smells awesome."
Akaashi tucked his wings closer to his body and hugged his waist. "Mhmm."
Bokuto turned over and smiled. Akaashi looked so silly in the mornings with his messy hair and crooked clothes. Bokuto sat up slowly and shook out his wings. "God I need to fix up my wings."
Akaashi stared at his feathers, only now noticing how messy the feathers were. He stirred around the vegetables and realized it would be enough for Bokuto as well. He got out two plates and waited a bit longer before giving one to Bokuto and taking the other to the floor where he usually ate.
"Woah, woah you can sit up here, I'll move," Bokuto stated hurriedly.
"I sit here always," Akaashi mumbled between bites.
Bokuto raised a brow. "You like sitting on the floor to eat?"
"Mhmm..."
Bokuto watched him for a moment before lowering to the floor next to him and eating in silence. Akaashi could not stop staring at Bokuto's wings either, intrigued. How did it feel to even fix feathers? His wings literally could not get messy and were always silky smooth.
Bokuto noticed his staring and nudged him with a wing. "Go ahead and feel of it. I don't mind."
Akaashi hesitantly brushed his fingers across Bokuto's feathers and smiled.
"You clung to my wings while you were sick. It was really funny cause I've never had anyone really be so clingy to my wings."
Akaashi felt embarrassed until he was reassured that what he was doing wasn't wrong and was in fact perfectly fine. He ran his fingers over the bones at the top of his wing and just stared, content. Instead of watching his hand to make sure he would pull a feather he watched Akaashi. He hadn't seen him smile this much before and he seemed genuinely happy.
"Soft, aren't they?"
"Soft," Akaashi whispered. He laughed quietly. "Very soft."
Bokuto chuckled. "Thank you. Thanks for the food too. I didn't mean to sleep here but I didn't want that creepy guy to come and do something to you in your sleep. I'd feel awful knowing you would've gotten hurt cause I did something stupid."
Akaashi let go of Bokuto's wing and raised his brows. He could take care of himself. Not very well but he could do it.
"I say something wrong?"
Akaashi shook his head and rubbed Bokuto's wing again, straightening out the feathers.
"If you comb your fingers it helps." Bokuto combed his fingers through his feathers.
Akaashi followed suit and immediately got closer, combing all of Bokuto's feathers to look neater. Bokuto moved his other wing over and Akaashi practically climbed on him to fix it. Bokuto pat his shoulder and leaned back, just letting Akaashi mess with his feathers. He'd tire himself out eventually.
Akaashi tapped Bokuto's wrist and pointed to the feathers he had fixed. "That's lovely."
Akaashi's wings fluttered instead of staying tucked behind him. They were going crazy and Bokuto just laughed at it, loving the blue blur behind Akaashi.
"Really, you did great. Do you ever wash your wings?"
Akaashi shook his head and slowed them down. "They don't get very dirty."
"Do you mind if I touch them?"
Akaashi stopped moving his wings. He'd only had Oikawa touch his wings and usually it didn't feel all that good. "Um..."
"Hey, hey, hey I don't have to! You're all good man!"
Akaashi touched his wings and took a deep breath. "It sort of hurts if you touch my wings wrong."
"Then I won't touch them. That simple man. I don't want to hurt you on accident."
Akaashi nodded and sat back on the floor, now overly aware of the pain that could have happened.
"You okay?"
Akaashi just nodded again and yawned softly. He realized he needed to change and tried to think of any way to get Bokuto to leave.
"I should probably go check on Suga to make sure he's being warmed up. He got so sick last week I thought I was about to have my first corpse to deal with." Bokuto stood and stretched. "Thank you for letting me stay here by the way, I'll repay you soon."
Akaashi nodded and waved. As soon as Bokuto left he hurried to get washed up and dressed so that he could get in the mindset for writing. He sat on his bed with a notepad and pencil, biting a nail. This was too difficult right now.

"Hey, what does Akaashi like?" Bokuto questioned, standing up from fixing his bag.
He had finished up checking on Suga, who was now feeling a lot better since he was warm. His diet was a bit better and he was sleeping more like he needed to. No hibernation meant awful health for him so he needed to fix that.
Daichi was in the room with him, worried still. "Oh uh... books? Flowers? He really likes to snack on sweets for his blood sugar."
"That's great. What kinda flowers?"
"Anything purple or red. Why?"
"He let me sleep at his place last night and cleaned up the look of my feathers. It was super sweet so I just wanted to thank him." Bokuto smiled wide and hoped to whatever was out there that Daichi didn't think he was trying to flirt with Akaashi. He was just being nice.
"Oh. Yeah press the flowers if you get any or can find any. He hates watching them die so he presses them and puts them in an album." Daichi covered Sugawara up fully with a comforter and kissed his temple. Sugawara whined but leaned back and laid against Daichi's knees.
"That's actually kinda smart." Bokuto situated his bag and looked over Suga again. "Remember, daily journal his progress. If he catches something or gets too cold it'll be hell on all of us."
"I know I've been covering him with my wings while I sleep and giving him extra blankets while he sleeps. I've got a small mattress upstairs I was supposed to move down here last week that I'll put down here later."
"Good. And make sure he doesn't bruise. I'm sure you know the whole lecture by now."
"I do. Thank you so much for helping."
"It's no problem." Bokuto left Daichi's house and headed down to the pharmacy where they usually had half dead flowers and of course the medicines he needed. He picked up a set of roses and three bottles of medicine. All the while he kept seeing a dark figure behind him, watching intently. This person didn't look familiar or anything like that so that was extremely confusing.
Each time Bokuto would see him he would just look away or seem like he was interested in the most random things. No one is going to pick up a tank top three sizes too small for them in winter. Bokuto knew that for a fact. He just adjusted his jacket and made sure his knife was still hidden but within reach. Stupid people would get stupid consequences if they did something to him. Especially while he was carrying medicine for his patients.
Bokuto found his way to his first patient's home and gave her her medicine for her back pain, wishing her the best as he left. The figure continued to follow him to the second house where he was dropping off seizure medicine to a teen for her dad to take. At the last house Bokuto turned around and stared at the man.
"Listen I don't know who you are but this isn't how you make friends. And this is certainly not what I'm going to deal with while I'm giving medicine to my patients, especially the little ones I have to take care of. Either you leave or I'll make you stop following right now. You will not hurt my damned kids."
The man who had been following close behind simply looked him up and down and Bokuto saw the tip of what looked like a wolf's tail twitch behind him. No wonder he was being such an ass.
He walked away and Bokuto sighed in relief. He put a mask on and knocked on the door of the home in front of him. A young woman opened the door and smiled tiredly. "Thank you so much..."
"It's no problem at all. I've got his medicine." Bokuto looked at the mother in front of him and decided that the flowers would be better for her instead of Akaashi. She had been so worn down with her little ones that she just couldn't keep up so she deserved at least something to show her kindness. "I picked up some flowers as well. They're wilting a bit but you know it's winter and they just kinda die. I hope you like them."
"Oh thank you I'll go put these up. He's on the couch because he wanted to listen to me read down here."
Bokuto nodded and handed over the flowers before going to the little boy. He was fast asleep, holding his favorite caterpillar stuffed animal. Bokuto rubbed his back slowly, feeling awful that he had to wake him. "Hey, hey, hey time to wake up buddy..."
The little boy moved and squirmed and started coughing, clinging to his stuffed animal. Bokuto smiled sadly.
"Hi buddy... you feeling any better or has it gotten worse?"
"Don't feel good Mr. Bo..."
Bokuto nodded. "I can only imagine. I am so sorry little guy. I've got your medicine here for you. Do you think you can sit up to take it?"
He nodded before trying to sit up on his own. Bokuto helped him up and wrapped another blanket around his shoulders.
"How bad is the pain today bud?"
"Six..."
"Yeah? All the way up there?" Bokuto took out the little vial of medicine and cleaned the top of it. "What hurts still?"
"My tummy. Always feel like I gots to potty but I don't need to."
"Oh man I'm sorry about that." Bokuto opened the bag and sighed. Two shots today. "Do you want mommy to come and hold your hand?"
"I be big boy." He turned his head away. "It okay."
Bokuto smiled sadly. "You are definitely acting like a big boy." He cleaned off his arm and took the medicine from the vial with a needle. "You ready?"
"Mhmm!"
"Alright little pinch. One, two, three!" Bokuto injected the medicine as quick as he could. He put a bandaid down and the little boy looked up.
"All done?"
"Almost. We've got one more and your cough medicine."
"Ew."
"Haha I know it's gross. But I've got a treat like always." Bokuto took out the next vial and got a new needle. The little one turned his head away and Bokuto gave him his second shot. "You did so good today! No tears or anything little dude! Great job!"
"Yeah!" He started to cough and Bokuto rubbed his back.
"Easy, easy." Bokuto grabbed the bottle of cough medicine from his bag and filled a spoon with it. He gave the little boy his medicine and laid him down, setting his juice box close. His eyes went to the window where he saw the man who had been following him across the road staring. He closed the curtains and tucked his patient in. "Get some sleep buddy. You were so brave today."
Bokuto went to his mother, who was tiredly checking her mail.
"Has he been looking any better?"
"He's been looking better but he just seems to keep feeling bad."
"I get that. He looked a lot better today." Bokuto glanced back into the living room and sighed. "Two shots and cough medicine today. Make sure that if he's sleeping under the window like that he's covered up a lot so he doesn't get cold."
"Got it."
"You're doing good. He's doing really good. Most kids cry and scream when I come over because they don't want shots and medicine but he's super sweet to me."
"He's is super sweet. Thank you so much for all you're doing for us."
"It's no problem," Bokuto stated as he walked to the door. "Bye buddy! See you in a few weeks!"
"Bye bye!"
Bokuto chuckled and stepped back into the night. The man from earlier was gone and Bokuto sighed softly. Stupid people.
