19. The Alcohol Did It

Akaashi set down his journal and walked up to Kuroo, making sure Bokuto was fast asleep. "Kuroo I need to talk to you."

Kuroo turned, confused. "Huh?"

"Bokuto keeps having nightmares. Really bad ones and I think they're getting worse."

Kuroo glanced into Bokuto's room and furrowed his brows. "He has?"

"Yes." Akaashi glanced back. "Since his drink had something in it actually. He keeps whispering about a girl named Anna."

Kuroo's eyes softened. "Anna..."

"Is that an ex or something?"

"No. Anna was someone very important to all of us. Especially Bokuto. I'll get him to tell you about her." Kuroo sighed. "If he wakes up again, come and get me. I've got it."

"I just want him to stop having nightmares."

"I do too but it'll only stop when he gets the help for it to stop."

"What do you mean?"

"He needs to go to therapy for this shit. What happened with Anna was terrifying and even I have to go to therapy for it. I don't get nightmares about it but I do sometimes think about it and it makes me sick to my stomach."

Akaashi nodded and went back to Bokuto. He climbed under his wing and Bokuto held him close. "Mm... Keiji?"

"It's just me. Go back to sleep."

"I know." Bokuto held Akaashi closer. He was so warm and incredibly comfortable. "Mm."

"Better?"

"My feet are cold."

Akaashi sat up and fixed the blankets before laying down and yawning.

"You're the best."

Akaashi chuckled. "Go to sleep."

Bokuto pulled him closer and kissed his hair. Akaashi stayed still, heart beating out of his chest. He prayed that whatever that was was just Bokuto moving and not a kiss.

Akaashi's earlier comparison of Bokuto to a flame went through his mind and he felt a suffocating sense of nervousness. Had he accidentally caught feelings for someone like Bokuto?

Not that Bokuto was bad or anything. It's just that he was so busy and so invested in everything. He loved himself and Yuuma and his friends and life but he wasn't Akaashi's.

Bokuto was so much better than him in so many senses. Bokuto flew a lot and worked out when he was up for it. He ate healthy. He took care of everyone as well. Akaashi hated working out and despite being vegetarian he somehow didn't eat healthy. He didn't work out or fly.

It wasn't fair that he liked Bokuto. This didn't feel like he was allowed to do it.

Akaashi snapped out of his thoughts as he heard Yuuma's insistent crying. Bokuto stirred. Akaashi set his hand on Bokuto's chest. "I've got it."

"It's probably time for his meds..." Bokuto sat up with Akaashi. He slipped out of bed and Yuuma was gently picked up and brought to Bokuto's bed. Akaashi watched as Bokuto led Yuuma through taking medicine and then laying him back down on the bed.

"Are you okay?"

Bokuto rubbed his eyes and nodded. "Mm okay." He laid down, back facing Akaashi. Akaashi laid back down and yawned quietly. He laid still for a while, nearly asleep.

"Nevermind."

Akaashi felt the bed move but stayed as he was, too tired to care about anything but how good he felt.

"Are you asleep?"

Akaashi still stayed quiet and felt warmth surrounding him. As he slept he was wrapped in Bokuto's wings, the warmth very similar to the warmth he craved from fire that he watched. It wasn't harsh warmth either, it was what his soul wanted.

When he woke back up it wasn't from Bokuto moving in bed but rather Yuuma climbing on the bed to wake him up.

"Akaashi! Hi Akaashi!"

"Hello little one." Akaashi sat up slightly. "Where's Bo?"

"Mr. Bo is upstairs."

"Yuuma!" Akashi looked up as Bokuto rushed down the stairs. He had a spoon in hand, only having a pair of loose pants on. "I told you not to wake him up," Bokuto whined.

Akaashi laid back down. He could smell coffee in the air and even muffins. "I'll pretend to be asleep."

Bokuto pouted. "It's not the same."

"Shhhh." Akaashi laid back down, closing his eyes. "I'm asleep."

Bokuto smiled. Yuuma looked back before laying down with Akaashi, ears perked up. His little tail swatted Akaashi and Akaashi winced. "Be still."

Yuuma crawled under the blankets and clung to Akaashi. He yawned. "Mm sleepy."

Akaashi rubbed his back and behind his ears. "Shhhh, shhhh, shhhh."

Akaashi felt a hand on his shoulder that wasn't the five year old's in his arms. Bokuto gently tapped him. "Akaashi?"

"Mhmm?"

"I made us coffee." Bokuto sat down and dismissed Yuuma to go play. He held Akaashi up and Akaashi smiled up at him. "I made muffins too."

"That's very sweet of you Bokuto."

Bokuto smiled. "I've been so much on you guys recently and I really wanted to make up for it, starting with you. I'm sorry for waking you up all the time. I know my nightmares are a lot to deal with-"

"Hush. How much sugar did you put in here?"

"Two teaspoons."

Akaashi pat his chest. "Good job." He took a sip and laid against Bokuto.

"Wait but my apology-"

"Is stupid. No offense. Kotarou I sleep here instead of my home to make sure you don't end up losing sleep. I enjoy taking care of you so just accept it."

Bokuto went quiet before sighing. He played with a blanket. "I need to go to work."

"I know." Akaashi looked up. "Go to work. I've got Yuuma."

"I know."

"Why do you sound upset?"

"I just want to make sure you guys are comfortable and I'm doing a really bad job."

"You're doing all that you can."

"I'm really not." Bokuto got up slowly. "I get off of work around three. Meet me at the clinic and I'll take you for dinner. Then I can explain stuff a bit better, okay?"

"Don't rush it, okay?" Akaashi sat up all the way. He glanced at Yuuma to make sure he was distracted. "I just want to know how to stop the nightmares."

"I can't," Bokuto whispered. "I literally can't stop them, that's the issue. I'm stuck this way."

"If we can just get you help-"

"Akaashi I have severe PTSD. I fit the stereotype of not being able to move on. I'm really sick and I can't fix it no matter how many therapists I go to. Help does not work so stop treating me like it's going to."

Akaashi set down his coffee and got up, walking over to Yuuma. "Sweetheart the adults need to talk. Go play upstairs until I come get you, okay?"

"Okay!" He ran upstairs and Akaashi sat on Bokuto's bed.

"First of all I'm not treating you in any sort of way." He looked Bokuto in his eye and saw the rage behind his look but knew how much pain it stemmed from. He didn't know the cause but he didn't need to. "Second of all I am only helping you because you deserve it. I don't deserve to be dismissed when I'm genuinely being nice to you."

"I didn't ask for you to try and help me-"

"I didn't ask for you to save me and look where that got us."

Bokuto's wings tensed and fluffed up.

Akaashi's heart nearly stopped. Bokuto was angry. Not just in his chest frustrated. When someone with such large wings puffed them in anger things could go very wrong very fast. "Kotarou?"

Bokuto took a few deep breaths, hands clenched at his sides.

"Do you want me to leave?"

"I'm not going to hit you, don't get scared." Bokuto's wings eased back to their normal state. "I don't hit people."

Akaashi felt his heart shatter as Bokuto started to try and hold back tears. He got up to at least comfort Bokuto but he backed up.

"Don't touch me! Back up!"

Kuroo rushed down the stairs. "Akaashi he's serious! Take a hint!"

Akaashi backed up. He watched as Kuroo took Bokuto into his arms. Watched as Kuroo ignored the pain from Bokuto clutching his hands.

"I'm right here man. What do you need? Do you need your meds? Some water?"

"I'm- I can't-" Bokuto tapped his chest.

Kuroo reached and ran his fingers through Bokuto's wings. "Easy. Easy... I know it hurts. I know."

"I didn't mean to hurt anyone. I never tried to hurt anyone. It was the alcohol."

Kuroo spread out Bokuto's wings. "I know man, I do. Hey, hey spread your wings out properly. They're gonna cramp if you don't."

Bokuto leaned into Kuroo, spreading out his wings and flapping them.

"Good job. Deep breaths. You're almost done calming down. Isn't that awesome dude? Nearly all on your own this time."

Akaashi watched them and all he could do was feel bad. He didn't mean to sound harsh but he wanted so badly to help.

Kuroo turned and sighed. "I appreciate you trying to help him, I do. I'm sure if he could talk very much right now he'd say thank you, but I'm gonna have to ask you to leave. Just for a few days. His health comes above anything."

"Of course. Is there anything I can do to help while I'm gone? I could watch Yuuma or-"

"Yuuma is safe here. Please leave."

Akaashi got up and gathered his things. He kissed Yuuma's cheek on the way out and soon found that his interest to write any that day was gone.
