17. Allergies
Three weeks had passed since Bokuto had taken Yuuma into his care. Akaashi visited him as often as he could and took him on walks around the neighborhood. Yuuma's little legs and back always got a warm bath and he got his snack afterwards.
Bokuto was busy with trying to find him a home but no one would keep him and things were getting stressful. Kuroo was even helping out but his patience was running thin with Yuuma's whining.
"Akaashi! Come get this kid!"
Akaashi found Kuroo and lifted Yuuma off the floor. "Oh come here sweetheart. What did Kuroo do? Was he being mean to you?"
"H-hurts! Hurts!"
"Wanna do some stretches buddy? It'll help tons."
Yuuma shook his head. "Want Mr. Bo! Mr. Bo!"
Akaashi sighed. A tantrum. "Yuuma. Mr. Bo is trying to sleep honey. He'll be up to help you soon but you've got to wait. I can get you either a bath or stretch with you."
Yuuma screamed, kicking. Oikawa looked over and sighed. "Yuuma if you be quiet I'll give you a cookie."
Yuuma sobbed into Akaashi's leg and kept begging for Bokuto until he heard Bokuto's room door open. Bokuto groggily walked into the kitchen and picked up Yuuma. "Shhhh, shhh, shhh. I'm right here. Bo's right here buddy. What's going on?"
"Hurts! Hurts!"
Bokuto hummed and grabbed some melatonin gummies. "Relax, shhhh. Hush little one. Here's your gummies to make the hurt go away. You can come lay down with me."
Yuuma nodded, chewing up his gummies despite being snotty and tear-faced. He burrowed into Bokuto's shoulder and Bokuto sat down on a stool, slouched and rocking back and forth slowly to ease Yuuma to sleep.
"I need a drink," Kuroo mumbled.
Bokuto looked up and nodded. "On me in an hour."
Oikawa looked up at Akaashi. "Want to go with us?"
"Who will watch Yuuma?"
"I'll put him in my bed with my things. Oikawa, let Iwaizumi know that he may have to go lay with Yuuma." Bokuto yawned and rubbed Yuuma's back. "How are we feeling buddy?"
Yuuma hummed softly and whined.
"I know it buddy, I know it." Bokuto stood carefully and kept Yuuma close. "Let's go lay down."
Yuuma was laid down and Bokuto stayed next to him, rubbing his back until he was snoring. Iwaizumi traded spots with him and Bokuto got dressed. He stayed close to Akaashi, brushing his wing along his back.
"Are you okay Kotarou?"
"I'm just tired Keiji." Bokuto smiled wearily at him.
Akaashi could see the pain behind his smile and stared worriedly. Lately whenever Akaashi wasn't buried in work he was with Bokuto and usually it ended with Bokuto sleeping. His sleeping was often interrupted with bad dreams too, adding onto his stressors. It wasn't every night but it was certainly often enough to tire him out.
Akaashi didn't note this knowledge and just held Bokuto's sleeve. Bokuto got to the bar and sighed.
"What's wrong?"
"I don't really drink alcohol anymore."
"You don't have to if you don't want to. Just ask for a coffee next door and bring it in," Oikawa suggested.
"True." Bokuto let the others enter the bar before pulling Akaashi aside. "I'm not a good person when I get drunk. I am going to drink but Daichi has already told me you don't like it. Do you want me to get you a coffee?"
Akaashi's smiled melted and he nodded. "Yes please."
"What do you want? Regular? Creamer?"
"Just get black coffee and a few creamer cups and sugars. I know how to mix it together."
Bokuto nodded before tapping Akaashi's nose. "I gotcha. Can you order me this thing called a Pimm's cup? I know it sounds stupid but I love it."
"No problem." Akaashi smiled up at him before going to the bar. Oikawa and Kuroo both got something and Akaashi ordered for Bokuto. They sat at a table and Bokuto came back inside. Oikawa had gone to the bathroom and Kuroo was distracted with staring at his beer blankly, leaving Akaashi to watch as Bokuto panicked for a second. "What's wrong?"
"I forgot creamer."
"Don't panic. Just go ask for some or get it out of the little container." Akaashi shook his head. "Dunce."
"Oh hush." Bokuto left and Akaashi watched him walk out. A set of yellow butterfly wings followed him and he shakily sighed out.
Akaashi looked at Kuroo. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah. The cold bothers my hands." He looked up. "Like old people bones."
Akaashi chuckled. Oikawa sat back down and sipped from his beer. "Did he really get something that's basically just fruit?"
"Maybe."
Bokuto walked back to their table and handed Akaashi his creamer. "Thank you."
Bokuto nodded and sat down, putting a wing around Akaashi like a second pair of arms. Akaashi huddled up close to him and sipped at his coffee. Bokuto practically chugged down his drink and Kuroo looked alarmed. "Hey man don't drink too much- you have a really low tolerance now. Be careful."
"You're right, sorry. I'm just super fucking thirsty man."
"We can go grab waters in a sec."
Bokuto nodded and turned to Akaashi, just enjoying the fact that he was so comfortable with him. After some time Akaashi noticed Bokuto's eyes starting to drift and stare at the walls and people.
Kuroo noticed it too after a second and tapped Oikawa's shoulder. "I think he's about to have an episode."
Oikawa switched seats with Kuroo and Akaashi straightened up. He leaned across the table and whispered to Oikawa in a worried tone. "What's going on?"
"You know how military guys will space out and then start crying because they're having flashbacks? That's what's happening ish. He sometimes gets bad flashbacks from something that happened when he was younger and he can have bad panic attacks. It's terrifying for him and Kuroo is the only one who's been able to help so far."
Akaashi nodded. Bokuto suddenly got up and Kuroo did too. "Hey man where are you going?"
Bokuto stumbled. "The room is spinning."
Akaashi got up and set a hand on Bokuto's back. "Kotarou?"
Bokuto gulped, shaky. "There's something wrong. I'm not having an episode. I just... I'm seeing and hearing weird things right now and I don't know what to do- I feel super tired and..."
Akaashi sat Bokuto down and Kuroo stood by him, holding his face up. "There's nothing in your drink that you're allergic to, right?"
Bokuto shook his head slowly. His eyes widened slightly. "I hear Anna."
"That's it, I'm getting a bartender right now," Oikawa got out before running up to the bar.
Bokuto spotted Akaashi before his eyes started to flutter. His wings weren't at all acting normal, slamming into things and stretching without him having control over himself.
"What seems to be the problem here guys?"
Kuroo looked up from holding Bokuto. "There's something really wrong. I thought it was a panic attack but he's twitching like crazy. Bokuto do you hear me man?"
Bokuto tapped Kuroo's chest frantically.
The bartender gently took Bokuto's hands and stood him up. "Let's go big guy."
Bokuto pulled away. He looked around, dizzy and grabbing for anything he could touch. Akaashi winced as one of those things happened to be his shoulder. "Kotarou what's wrong? We can't help you if you don't explain what's wrong."
"I- I- I-" Bokuto grabbed onto a seat, breathing heavily. "I can fucking smell colors what the fuck is going on?! Everything is super bright!"
Kuroo's eyes widened. "Do you guys have a smoke room? Which place around here does?"
Oikawa looked up from trying to redirect Bokuto's wings. "He shouldn't be smoking!"
"Hang on you fucking dumbass!" Kuroo spotted the smoke room and quickly got Bokuto to it. He sat him down and everyone around stared. Kuroo turned to the group. "My friend got something slipped in his drink. He is tripping actual fucking balls right now and the only place I could think of that was dark is back here. Is it okay if I try to calm him down back here?"
"Yeah that's okay. Just try to keep him from screaming, one of our friends is sleeping."
"Got it." Kuroo leaned down and held Bokuto's face in his hands. "Deep breaths. Easy, easy. You're okay."
"Did I get drunk?" Bokuto whispered. His eyes teared up. "Did I break my streak?"
"No, no! You're doing awesome with staying sober. I love it and it's awesome. I think there was something in your drink that made you feel this way. I'll take you to the doctor as soon as I can but I can't have you running around in the streets freaked out."
"Where's Anna?"
"Let's focus on you for now."
Akaashi walked in and coughed. "Hey little man if you can't handle the smoke you shouldn't be in here."
"I'm checking on my friend." Akaashi turned to Bokuto and felt of his forehead. A light fever touched his fingers and he frowned.
"Keiji? Oh no Keiji... does he know where Anna is?"
"I'm sorry, I don't know where she is. But I'm sure she's okay." Akaashi smiled and Bokuto smiled back.
"You're so stunning."
Akaashi blushed but soon his face paled as Bokuto started to go slack. He helped Kuroo get Bokuto up and they waited by the entrance for a medic that the bartender had gotten. Bokuto wouldn't wake up no matter how much they tried, even if his pulse was almost normally stable.
He was taken away to the clinic where Akaashi watched them take Bokuto's blood and then pump his stomach, which he wished he hadn't seen. Bokuto looked exhausted by the time sun started to rise.
