15. In the Cold
Bokuto stood still, his heart practically beating out of his chest. He had to get Yuuma. The social worker behind him smiled. "Kotarou this isn't your first time dealing with this sort of thing. Take a deep breath and request to take him to the clinic and if she still refuses I'll step in."
Bokuto nodded and knocked on the door. No answer. Another knock. Still no answer.
Bokuto waited a few minutes before letting the woman behind him step into the home. It was freezing cold and all of the windows were open.
"Oh my God."
The social worker set down her bag and hurried to find any sign of Yuuma.
"Yuuma?! Buddy?! Where'd you go?!" Bokuto called out. A little figure stumbled by and Bokuto grabbed Yuuma. "He's burning up. Yuuma where's mommy?"
"D-dunno she took away my bowl..."
Bokuto took off his coat and wrapped Yuuma up in it. The worker tilted her head in confusion. "Bowl?"
"He only eats food in one bowl. I know it's odd but he has some tendencies."
"That's okay. Let's get him to the clinic."
Yuuma started to sob, clinging to Bokuto. Bokuto sat on a chair nearby and put Yuuma in his lap. "Buddy does something hurt?"
"Tummy! And- and so hungry Mr. Bo!"
"Mommy didn't feed you?"
"No."
Bokuto nodded. "Let's get you warmed up and I'll get you something to eat. Sound good?"
Yuuma nodded. He sniffled. Bokuto slowly stood, rocking him. The case worker he was with smiled sadly. "I'll come to get his things as soon as I can."
Bokuto nodded and carried Yuuma to the clinic, keeping a wing over him to keep his little body warm. He was shivering and his little ears shaped out like a mouse's were pressed down to his head. Bokuto got clearance to go put him in a bed and examine him, the social worker with them the whole time.
"You remember how Mr. Bo gives you checkups?"
Yuuma nodded, shivering. Bokuto smiled sadly.
"I'm gonna go ahead and give you a checkup. Is that okay with you?"
Yuuma nodded again. "Who is that lady?"
"She's just here to make sure you're okay. Arms up please."
Yuuma put his arms up and did as he was told for the next few minutes. Bokuto noted his ragged breathing and temperature along with his paleness and just got him dressed in clean clothes and laid down.
"He's um... he's just got the flu I think. Poor thing has something in his system though I think. He's got needle marks on his arms and I haven't given him antibiotic shots in a while."
Yuuma's worker nodded and wrote something down. "I've got it from here. Go get him something to eat."
Bokuto nodded and headed out to get him some soup and blankets. When he brought them back to the clinic, he was sleeping peacefully and holding onto his pillow. Bokuto slipped the blankets he'd gotten over the little one.
"Kotarou?"
"Yes ma'am?"
"We're going to need you to try to only be friendly towards him on a doctor and patient level. Interacting with him as if he was your son or brother can be very dangerous to the investigation."
Bokuto whipped around, his body rigid. "Investigation?! You saw what I did! His mother left him!"
"I understand that but you can not have a bias in this."
Bokuto took a deep breath. "Please allow me to check on my patient then."
She nodded and left the room.
Bokuto gently woke Yuuma and fed him slowly, watching his droopy stare. "Buddy are you hurting still?"
"Mhmm..."
"Is it your tummy?" Yuuma nodded. Bokuto hummed softly. "I'll go get you some medicine okay?"
He walked off and noticed Akaashi in the lobby. He went to him, worried. Akaashi just smiled nervously. "Daichi sent me to ask the doctors about Suga's medicine."
"Oh shit is he okay?"
"He's okay. He just needs some supplements because he's not eating a lot."
"Is he eating okay when he's awake?"
Akaashi hesitated.
"Is he eating?"
"He's trying but everything keeps coming up, meaning we have to keep him awake longer. He's also got a small fever." Akaashi fiddled with his hands. "We think he caught the flu from someone."
"Damn it. That was probably me. I'm taking care of a kid with it right now. I'll put gloves and a mask on before I get in the house. I need to deal with this kid first and I'll be right over. I'll walk with you."
Akaashi nodded and sat back down. Bokuto came back to him twenty minutes later and led him to Suga's house with his medicine.
"So has he been waking up on his own?"
"No. We've been waking him up to try and get him to eat."
"Weird that he's not eating well. Is he cold?"
"He gets cold chills."
Bokuto nodded. He stopped outside of Daichi's home and put on his gloves and mask. "This day is just full of adventures. Show me where he is."
Akaashi opened the door and went to Sugawara, who was laying on his side closer to the fire. Bokuto leaned by him and felt of his neck to check for swollen nodes but he seemed fine.
Daichi walked in and woke Sugawara up, holding him as he peacefully held on.
"Hey, hey, hey Suga. How are you feeling?"
"Mm? I'm great. I'm great." Suga leaned back into Daichi and relaxed.
"Have you guys been hydrating his scales?"
"I have been every other day like usual."
"Try every day." Bokuto took out his stethoscope and listened to Sugawara's heart. Slow and steady like usual. He took his temperature and saw the fever. Sugawara was back asleep, unable to help it. Daichi worriedly looked to Bokuto.
"Will he be okay?"
"It's just a little cold." Bokuto found Sugawara's medicine. "Mix these with food purée stuff and take those plastic syringes and feed it to him. It'll be easier to digest."
Daichi sighed with relief. "That's all?"
"That's all. Try to fix his scales and give him syringes instead of solids. It'll be easier."
Akaashi yawned and sunk into a couch behind him, his eyes stuck to a lamp next to him. Bokuto laughed. "So moths really do stare at fire?"
Akaashi didn't respond, his eyes glazed over in delight. Daichi smiled. "According to Oikawa he's done that since he was little. His whole family does it if a flame is close enough."
Bokuto walked over to Akaashi and leaned down. "Keiji~ whatcha doin?"
"Watching the fire," Akaashi whispered. He smiled. "It's so pretty."
Bokuto nodded and made sure Akaashi didn't try to touch the flame. Eventually his eyes closed though and Bokuto covered him in a blanket. "He's so sweet."
"He's something. If you get him to open up enough he becomes like Hinata. You've met him, right?"
"Ooh yeah. Akaashi's hyper?"
"No. He's chaotic. He bounces off the walls and whined until you cuddle him. Either that or he gives you the coldest sass ever. You should see the way he scolds Oikawa for messing with him when he's writing." Daichi set down Sugawara and kissed his forehead. "He cussed him up and down a wall."
"Oh?"
"Mhmm. Hell I'm surprised he hasn't pinched you so hard you bruised."
"He shoved my wing in my face and told me I stank the other day."
"That sounds like Akaashi."
Akaashi's eyes fluttered back open and he smiled tiredly up at Bokuto. "Mm... hello."
"Hello. Wanna go home?"
"I'm okay." Akaashi touched Bokuto's arm. "Night."
"Ah, ah have you ate?"
Akaashi nodded and burrowed into the blanket he'd been given. "Mm snuggle?"
"Not right now. I've got a shit ton of paperwork to do." Bokuto covered Akaashi up properly. "Good night."
"No, no, no... snuggle?"
"I really can't. I've got a case on my hands right now."
Daichi looked up. "What?"
"I can't go into details because it's a violation." Bokuto rubbed Akaashi's arm. "I'll come back later. Good night Keiji."
Akaashi waved.
Bokuto left the home and rushed to get to Yuuma. That poor baby had been left alone and was still cold. Bokuto knew his bias was a lot on the case workers but he needed to help. Yuuma was wrapped in his wings and cuddled until he was comfortable and cozy.
Bokuto just watched the door. This was his little one now. Yuuma's mother was nothing anymore after what she had done. Yuuma was his and that was final.
