Only One Can Remain
What's this?!? I updated! Okay, getting back into the writing mojo now, so yay! :)
Kaylee's POV
Chen's Ferry arrives at Chen's island.
"Look at that." Cole wows.
"Awesome." Kai gaps.
"Let me see."Karlof pushes Kai.
"Do you mind?" Kai snaps, as the gangplank lowers, and we all start walking on the island.
"Welcome to Chen's Island. The Tournament of Elements welcomes its brave fighters. Master Chen will be pleased you've returned, Sensei Garmadon." Clouse declares.
"The pleasure is all mine, Clouse," Garmadon says.
"I'm sure it is." Clouse sneers.
"Definitely feeling some tension between you two," Jay whispers
"Yeah, and how is it we're on an island I've never seen on any map?" Kai asks.
"And care to explain how the face to Ninjago's most popular noodle house is secretly assembling an underground fighting tournament?" Cole adds.
"Master Chen used to be a friend. Now he's a traitor. During the Serpentine Wars, Chen turned against his own kind and sided with the treacherous snakes." Garmadon informs.
"The battle you and Uncle Wu fought together in? He was an enemy?" Lloyd gasps.
"He used deception to divide the Elemental Masters. We barely defeated the Serpentine, and in a deal for his surrender, Chen was to never leave this island. Little did we know, he'd begin to build his criminal empire from here." Garmadon finishes.
"He may have divided our ancestors, but he's not gonna divide us," Lloyd vows.
"Uh...ladies first." Kai pushes us aside for Orange Hoodie Girl. "Fire will melt her icy heart. Just wait." Garmadon sighs.
"Just to let you know, I'm a girl too. Dipshit." I walk ahead, staring at Orange Hoodie Girl. Something was up with her.
"This is a big island. Zane could be anywhere. Keep an eye out." Cole orders.
"So this is the house that noodles built. Ha! Always wanted to go to a red carpet event." Jay fake struts.
"Chen lives like a king. Here, he's totally self-sufficient. The only way on or off this island is with his permission, which you have to earn." Garmadon says.
"You never told me about this place. How do you know so much about this island?" Lloyd asks.
"Because before Chen was my enemy, he was my Sensei." Garmadon shows us an Anacondrai tattoo etched on his back. We arrive inside the palace and sat in a circle.
"You never told me you had a Sensei," Lloyd whispers.
"When I was your age, I sought a darker means of guidance. He taught me to win at all cost, no matter who I hurt. It wasn't until you saved me that I saw the light." Gaqrmadon explains.
"Uh, apparently he also never taught you to have a sense of humor. Lighten up, we're in an underground fight club. This is supposed to be fun." Jay exclaims. A cultist bangs a gong and a gramophone plays music.
"All rise for Master Chen." Clouse declares.
"Welcome to the Tournament of Elements. Now everyone can all di-" The door suddenly closes and everyone gasps. "-rect your attention to me!" He laughs maniacally.
"I forgot to mention he has a penchant for theatrics," Garmadon whispers.
"Never before have so many Elemental Fighters been under one roof. I see Master of Fire, Earth, Shadow, Speed, even a prophesied Green Savior. And a former pupil has returned." Chen points to the gong in the left corner of the room. "This symbol before you is for the Anacondrai, fiercest Serpentine warrior to ever roam this land. Its creed: Only one can remain." The gong moves aside, showing a bracket.
"Good, looks like we're each in our own bracket. We won't have to face each other for a while." Kai stares at the brackets.
"Better find Zane before that happens," I whisper.
"Behold, a Jadeblade. Here, it represents life. Obtain it, move on. Allow your opponent to take it, loser. The rules are simple. Every match will be different. No two fights will be the same. Your powers will keep you in the Tournament. Use it or lose it." Chen declares.
"Hm, what does Karlof win?" Karlof hmphs.
"Win and stay on the island. Win it all, and you'll receive fortunes beyond your wildest dreams, and lifetime supply of Master Chen noodles. But no one is here because of noodle. You want the glory of being the greatest fighter in all of Ninjago!"Everyone but us cheer.
"And what happens if they lose?" Garmadon asks.
"Lose? Who here likes to lose?" They all laugh "Now please, enjoy my island. It's a super fun happy place. Hahaha. Fun time on me."
"You'll now each be shown to your rooms," Clouse says. Women and men with white face paint walk up to us.
"Ah, just what this place needs. Creepy clowns." Jay groans.
"Not clowns. Kabuki, Chen's jesters." Garmadon says. The Kabuki grab our arms.
"Yeah, well, whatever they are, I don't like them." Cole declares.
"So much for staying together." Kai sighs. We're being escorted to our suites, each Kabuki pulling on our arms.
"Always be ready. Never lose focus." Garmadon yells.
"What? Uh, what did he say?" Kai yells.
"I don't know. Something about, uh, mucus?" Jay answers. The Kabuki who was pulling me stopped right above Orange Hoodie Girl's bedroom.
"Your suite, Mistress Kaylee." The Kabuki bowed and left. It was silver, with a comfortable couch on the side. The large king-sized bed was near the front, and everything was neat, organized, and... what was that smell? I creep over to the coffee table in front of the couch, to find a mixture of periwinkle flowers and white roses.
"My favorite," I whisper, running my hand through the sweet, smelling flowers, before rearing back in pain. I stare at the flowers a bit more, not minding my bleeding hand, and seeing a Jadeblade in the middle of it. Curse you Chen. Also, how does he know that periwinkles and white roses are my favorite flowers? No one knows except for Lloyd, Nya, Sensei Wu, Jay, Kai, Cole, and Zane. Although Misako might know too. Okay, that's a lot of people. Music plays loudly from the speakers, as I carefully grab the Jadebade, making sure not to drop any blood on it.
Chen's voice sounds over an intercom. "Fellow fighters, hidden around my island are enough Jadeblades for every participant except for one. The one who returns to the palace arena empty-handed loses. The tournament begins...now!" I stare at the Jadeblade in my hand, then to the sounds of fighting outside. This was too easy. I jump down and start flying to the palace arena, and I stick the Jadeblade on the stand, blood-smeared. I glare at Chen, and soon the other's start coming in. First was Jay, then Lloyd.
"Why are you bleeding?" Lloyd asks, taking my hand into his.
"That's an answer for later, I sigh, seeing more Elemental Masters, and Garmadon come in. I quickly heal myself, Lloyd giving me soft puppy dog eyes, before softly planting a kiss on my forehead. Clouse puts a Jadeblade on a holder.
"Two Jadeblades remaining," Clouse informs.
"Wait! I got one!" Cole yells, running in, waving a Jadeblade over his head.
"Cole! Whoo-hoo! You made it!" Jay cheers.
"Where's Kai?" Cole asks.
"Only one Jadeblade remaining," Chen yells.
"He hasn't come yet," I say, peering over the edge. Soon, Karlof walks in with the Jadeblade.
"Hahaha! Karlof wins!" Everyone except for us cheers Someone sneaks up behind him and unscrews his Metal hand. "What?"
"Ah, looks like you got a screw loose." Kai steals the Jadeblade and puts it in the holder. Everyone except Garmadon cheers.
"We have a loser!" Chen yells.
Karlof puts his hand back. "That's not fair. He cheated."
"I did what I had to do." Kai shrugs.
"That is not how you win." Garmadon scolds.
"Fine, I lose. Karlof never wanted to be on stinking island." Karlof huffs.
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear you did not enjoy your stay. I guess this worked out for the best. This is goodbye!" Chen pushes a button, activating a trapdoor under Karlof, he screams as he falls. "As you can see, lose and you are out. Break any rule, you are out. Never bite the hand that feeds you Master Chen delicious noodle! Now rest up. Tomorrow the tournament will recommence."
The next day, we sit at a booth. I was leaning against Lloyd, vaguely listening to the conversation, already finished with my food.
"At least the chow's good." Cole happily munches on some noodles.
"Arrgh, it's killing me. What's under the trapdoor? What happens when you lose?" Jay frets.
"Don't think about that." Garmadon commands.
"It's all I can think about. I moved on. I feel guilt. These are not good feelings." Jay cries.
"You think you feel bad? Imagine how I feel. Our mission is simple. Tonight we find Zane and get off this crazy island." Kai orders.
"And just how are we supposed to do that? You heard Chen. Break a rule and we're out. He's not gonna let us roam around." Cole counters.
"Then it's a good thing we're Ninja. Meet me in my room at midnight." Kai commands.
"You mind if I join you?" Paleman asks.
"Disappear, pal! This is private." Jay snaps and Paleman uses his Light. Jay sighs. "I know you're still here. I can see your lunch tray."
I snap out of my daze. "Sorry about Jay, he's a bit. Er, suspicious, you can sit with us if you want."
"It's okay, Griffen's already calling me." Paleman turns down the offer and leaves.
"Jay, you were really mean." I snap, turning back to him.
"How am I supposed to know if we can trust him? See what this island is doing to me? It's corrupting me! It has to stop. I'll see you tonight." Jay sighs.
Right at midnight, I jump down from my balcony, to Kai's. Lloyd and Cole soon follow after. We walk in the room, sitting on the couch.
"Wow. It's really red." I comment.
"Alright, what happened, how did your hand bleed?" Lloyd asks, sitting down, and pushing me on his lap.
"You really are persistent, aren't you?" I laugh, and Lloyd slightly narrows his eyes.
"Come on. I'm listening." Lloyd beckons, rubbing his head on my neck.
"O-o-okay! Stop! Haha! It tickles!" I giggle, as Cole rolls his eyes at our antics.
"Will you tell me now?" He asks.
"Okay! I just found a vase of flowers, like my favorite, and a Jadeblade was in the middle of them and I cut myself. End of story!" I say.
"Good girl." He playfully growls.
"You are so goofy." I laugh.
"Whoa-ho-ho-ho. Nice digs." Jay compliments, as he and Kai walk in the room.
"I know. His room is so much nicer than mine. Look, chocolate-covered shell peas. I love these." Cole takes the bowl and jumps on Kai's bed. "Oh, and look how soft your pillows are. Man, mine are made of rock. What a crock."
"Okay, it was almost impossible to get here. This place is swarming with guards. Any ideas on how we search the island?" Jay asks.
"We travel by shadow. Cover every square inch of this place until we find him." Kai commands.
"The island's big. We'll need to split up." Jay says.
"No, we stick together." Lloyd counter.
"Uh, guys, this bed is, uh..." Cole says, pointing nervously at the bed.
"Cole, I get it! You like my bed. Would you stop playing around?" Kai snaps.
"I think I know how we can search the island," Cole smirks. We all lie down on the bed.
"Okay, I feel ridiculous." Lloyd huffs.
"Ah, you're right. The pillows are soft." Jay sighs happily.
"Is this a joke?" Lloyd snaps.
"I must've done something to trigger it. I was laying here, then I stretched-" The bed flips over. We all yell, but then we see a secret passage.
"Whoa! Secret passageway! Cool." I comment.
Kai uses his Fire to light up the passageway. "Nice work, Cole. Maybe Zane's not on the island but in it." They hear grunting from somewhere, it sounds like someone's fighting.
"Quiet. Do you hear that?" Lloyd asks.
Jay sees light coming from two holes. "Oh, secret peepholes. Haha! Super cool. Sounds like someone's fighting on the other side of this wall."
"What do you see? Who's fighting?" Cole asks.
"It's not a fight. It's Skylor's room. And it looks like she's training." Jay says. I think Skylor is the Orangie Hoodie Girl since we're not that far from Kai's room yet.
Kai extinguishes his Fire. "Let me see, let me see!"
"Ah, looks like Kai's got the hots for her." Cole snickers.
"No, she's competition. I just wanna know what powers we're up against!" Kai tries to use the peepholes.
"Ugh, wait your turn." Jay snaps.
"We can at least share." Kai snaps.
"Guys, this is an invasion of privacy." I sigh.
"Ugh, her room doesn't reveal anything about her power." Kai huffs, but then they gasp.
"What was it? What did you see?" Cole presses.
"She's...Fire..." Kai gasps.
"Wait a minute, if we're all descendants of Elemental Masters..." Lloyd starts.
Cole laughs and starts singing. "Kai's heart is on fire. Kai's heart is on fire. Kai's heart is on fire."
"Can we please just keep moving? It's like a maze down here. Good thing you're leaving a trail back to our room." Kai says.
"I'm what?" Cole looks behind him and sees his chocolate shell peas. "Oh, yeah, heh. I meant to do that."
We walk down farther. "Everyone stop! Booby traps."
"Haha! Booby traps. Even cooler. Haha." Lloyd stares at Jay. "Or, I mean, kinda cool. I mean, they're totally not cool, you know, 'cause they're dangerous."
"From here on out, we have to watch our step," I command, stepping over the tripwire. We hear chanting.
"Do you hear that? Everyone be quiet." Kai orders, and we hide behind a rock. The guys each fight an Anacondrai Cultist and take their outfits.
"Alright, we look kinda like them, but what about you Kaylee?" Kai asks. "Kaylee?" He looks around.
"Haha, you boys don't need to worry about me." I snicker, letting go of the illusion.
"OH JEEZ!" Jay yells. We follow them to Chen's ceremony, I putting back up my illusion.
"Stop licking your tattoos." Kai hisses.
"It's chocolate. I can't resist." Cole retorts.
"Shh! Just try to fit in." They chant with the Cultists, while I try not to laugh.
"Bring out the loser." Chen declares.
"Unh! Get hands-off Karlof! Karlof wish he never sign up for this. What's chanting for?" Karlof yells.
"Uh, they're saying 'Only one can remain.' Like I said, use it or lose it." Chen uses his staff to steal his Elemental power, using Ice, Zane's power.
"He's stolen Karlof's power," I whisper.
"And he used Ice. That means he must have already stolen Zane's power too." Cole infers.
"What happened to my Metal?" Karlof asks, smashing his gloved hands together.
"Your Metal? Oh, it's mine now. But now I will let you go." Chen laughs.
"Really?"
"To the factory!"
"No, no! Let Karlof go! No, no!"
"Jay, your face..." Lloyd points at Jay's face, which his chocolate tattoos were melting
"My face? All of our faces! The chocolate's melting." Jay gasps.
"Who are they?" A cultist asks.
"Intruders! Stop them! They must not escape!" Chen yells, and we start running away. Cole trips on the tripwire, closing the door on the Cultists.
"A-ha! Yes!" Kai cheers, but another trap activates. "Oh, no!"
"That was close." Cole pants, but we hear growling.
"That sound." I gasp and see a snake below us.
"That has got to be the second biggest snake I have ever seen!" Kai yells, and we climb up and somehow reenter Kai's room, falling on his bed. "Are we..."
"Yeah, barely." Lloyd sighs.
"Did we just-ow!" Cole yelps.
"No more sneaking around. From now on, let's just follow the rules." Jay sighs.
"We may not have found Zane, but we found something just as important. This tournament isn't about glory. It's about Chen stealing all of our Elemental Powers." I recap what our adventure held.
"But why? What is he planning?" Lloyd asks.
"I don't know, but if we're gonna find out and find Zane, we have to play by his rules. Agreed?" Kai asks.
"Agreed." We all nod.
"Good thing we weren't spotted. That was close." Cole says.
"Yeah, too close." Jay shows us a piece of his disguise the snake tore off.
"Are you serious?" I sigh. "The snake could have brought it to Chen for all we know!"
"Hey, it's okay. I don't think he'll suspect us yet." Lloyd consoles.
"Yeah? Well, you better hope." I stalk away, going back into my room. I grasp the locket of the group picture we took, after the Final Battle. "I miss you, Zane. I promise, I'll get you and Pixal out of here, even if it's the last thing I do." I clasp the locket and fall asleep.
There's some cool information there lol. :)
