chapter 7
Meanwhile, on the third class deck, August is sitting on a bench together with Jack and Fabrizio. Julia and her daughter Sophia can also be found on the deck. They are playing a game together with a doll that Sophia brought with her on this trip. Jack is busy with sketching them. After a while Julia gets the feeling that they are being watched and turns around. She sees Jack, who is constantly looking at her while he draws. Jack must have seen Julia's uneasy expression, because he just smiles and let's her see the drawing he is making of them. Julia sighs relieved and laughs. Suddenly Sophia runs towards the three men out of curiosity. 'Sophia!' Julia says a bit frightened and runs after her. Once Sophia reaches them, she looks at the men with a very playfully look in her eyes. 'Oh, hello there.' August says when he notices her and chuckles. Julia has also reached the group and takes Sophia by her hand. 'Sophia! Please, don't ever do that to me again!' 'I'm sorry mommy, I just wanted to explore....' Sophia says with a guilty face. 'And that's a good thing.' Jack speaks up, putting down his drawing. 'Always keep exploring. Just like I do.' Sophia smiles happily. Julia sighs. She actually wants to say something about it, but also realises that the men is right. 'What's is you name, madame?' August asks Julia with a very strong French accent. Julia pulls Sophia a bit closer to her. She just isn't really good with strangers and also never trusts them immediately. 'Julia. Julia Parker. And this is my daughter, Sophia.' She nods towards Sophia with her head. As expected all three men look at her with a surprised look in their eyes. 'She's you daughter?' August asks, realising that Julia must be a teenage mom. Julia sighs. 'Yes, she is. I'm going to America to try and start a new life with her there.' August nods and smiles kindly, just like Jack and Fabrizio. 'Well, I'm sure that you'll be happy there. I can see that you're a great mother.' Julia looks at him, a bit surprised, but smiles. 'Thank you. May I ask your names?' 'Of course,' Jack says and smiles. 'My name is Jack Dawson. And these two are my good friends August Dubois and Fabrizio de Rossi.' 'It's a pleasure to meet you all.' Sophia looks at the drawing Jack made. 'Is that me with mommy?' She asks. 'That's correct!' Jack says. He takes out the drawing and gives it to her. 'Here, you can have it. Made it specially for you.' 'Really!?' Sophia says happily. 'Thanks!' While Julia looks at the drawing, clearly impressed, August notices a man standing right beside them. He decides to start a conversation with him. The more the merrier. 'The ship is nice, right?' He asks him. 'It's an Irish ship.' The man replies, taking a drag from his cigarette. 'It's English, no?' Fabrizio asks slightly confused, who has followed their conversation. 'No.' The man says. 'It was built in Ireland. Fifteen thousand Irishmen built this ship. Solid as a rock. Big Irish hands.' Suddenly a few crew members pass by, walking with first class dogs. The man sees this and shakes his head. 'Ah, now that's typical. First class dogs come down here to take a shite.' You can hear his Irish accent. 'Let's us know where we rank in the scheme of things, apparently.' August answers. The man chuckles. 'Like we could forget.' He holds out his hand for August to shake. 'Tommy Ryan.' August smiles. He already liked this guy. 'August Dubois, nice to meet you.' August says, shaking Tommy's hand. Also Jack, Fabrizio and Sara shake his hand and introduce themselves. 'You're not from England, right?' Tommy asks August when he hears his accent. 'Non, I'm originally from France.' August replies. Tommy grins. 'That's what I thought.' Then he sees the drawings that Jack made. 'Do ya make any money from your drawings?' Tommy asks Jack. But it falls on deaf ears. Jack is suddenly looking at something, very intensely. Everyone turns their attention to what has caught Jack's eye. It's a red headed women standing on the First Class upper deck, Rose DeWitt Bukater. 'Ah, forget her boyo.' Tommy says. 'You might as well have angles flying out yer arse as get next to the likes of her.' He takes another drag from his cigarette. 'Well... that'd not entirely true.' Julia says and sits down on the bench. 'I was almost married to someone from the first class.' 'You were?' Tommy asks surprised. Julia nods. 'Yes.... but it didn't last long.' 'Did he leave you?' August asks a bit shocked. Julia sighs. 'No. He died in a accident.' Everyone stays silent after she says that. 'Oh Julia.... I'm so sorry.' August says, pitying her. 'It's okay.' She says. 'I never really loved him, to be honest. He was a nice guy, but I just didn't feel the same way about him as he did about me. He rescued me from living on the streets with my daughter. If I never would have met him, I would have lost Sophia. So I'm very grateful for everything he did. We would have been married by now if he hadn't died.' 'I'm sure that you'll find someone who you can really love.' Jack says. 'But don't search for it. Love always finds us in the most unexpected ways.' Julia smiles. 'You're right. I'll remember that.' Jack looks at Rose for one last time. He sees a man walking up to her and grabbing her arm. It's Caledon Hockley. 'Who's that guy?' August asks and points towards the man. Julia's eyes widen a little. 'Oh no.... not that guy.' She groans irritated. 'So you know him?' Jack asks while he watches the short conversation between Rose and Caledon. Rose walks away from him as soon as possible. 'Yes.' Julia answers. 'He was a friend of the man who took me in. Caledon Hockley was his name, I believe. But I've never seen the red haired girl before, though.' 'That guy really seems like some kind of spoiled brat.' August says. Julia chuckles. 'Oh believe me, August. He is....'
