chapter 6

Around 12:00 many first class passengers are going to the Veranda Cafe for lunch. Sara and her husband Thomas Andrews are one of them. They are quickly joined by others such as Bruce Ismay, Molly Brown, Caledon Hockley, Rose DeWitt Bukater, Ruth DeWitt Bukater and Edward Lewis. Also Amaris and her mother join the party. Of course Bruce Ismay immediately starts to talk about the Titanic, much to Sara's annoyance. 'She's the largest moving object ever made by the hand of man in all history.' He says. 'And our master ship builder, Mr Andrews, designed her from the keel plates up.' Sara looks at her husband. As always he's very modest about his work and smiles a bit awkward, not wanting to be in the middle of all the attention. 'I may have knocked her together, but the idea was Mr Ismay's.' He quickly says. 'He envisioned a steamer so grand in scale, and so luxurious in its appointments, that its supremacy would never be challenged. And here she is, willed into solid reality.' Edward chuckles. 'You both did a great job then.' He says and claps his hands together. Amaris looks around the table while the rest is talking. She is seated on the right side of Rose, a girl she already met earlier. They talked for a while and Amaris already liked her. She has the same free spirit as Amaris, a spirit that they sadly need to contain. Also Rose needs to marry once they reach America. She's the fiancée of Caledon Hockley, the man that's seated on the other side of Rose. When a waiter walks over to the table to take their orders, beginning with Ismay, Rose suddenly lits a cigarette. No else at the table seems to mind that she's smoking, but it's clear that her mother doesn't like it. 'You know I don't like that, Rose.' She says. To Amaris surprise and great pleasure, Rose blows the smoke in her mother's face, with an expression that says: "and, what exactly are you going to do about it?" Amaris grins in disbelief. It seems that Rose is becoming more rebellious. Sadly Caledon quickly spoils the moment by removing the cigarette and putting it out. 'She knows.' He announces to everyone at the table. Amaris roles her eyes while Edward raises an eyebrow. After Sara placed her order, the waiter walks over to Caledon and Rose. 'We'll both have the lamb, rare, with very little mint sauce.' He says, without even asking Rose what she wants to eat. Amaris can see in Sara's eyes that she, too, realises that Cal treats Rose as though she had no conscience of her own. 'You like lamb, right, sweet-pea?' Caledon looks at Rose and gives her a little smile. And again, to almost everyone's great pleasure, Rose flashes Caledon a magnificent and sarcastic smile, causing both Amaris and Edward to stifle a laugh. 'So are you going to cut her meat for her too there Cal?' Molly suddenly comments in giggles. Caledon obviously didn't like that comment, but Molly is quick to return to the previous topic of conversation. 'Hey, who came up with the name Titanic? Was it you Bruce?' 'Well, yes actually. I wanted to convey shear size, and size means stability, luxury, and above all, strength,' answers Ismay, once again in a boastful manner, while Sara proceeds to take a sip of water to hide her annoyance. Also Amaris continues to drink form her glass. 'Do you know of Dr Freud, Mr Ismay?' asks Rose. Ismay shakes his head, a bit confused by her question. 'His ideas about the male preoccupation with size might be of particular interest to you.' Just then, Amaris can't contain herself any longer, and the water that's in her mouth comes spluttering out. She coughs in laughter at her comment. Her mother gasps when she sees that. 'Amaris!' She says with a shocked look in her eyes. Ruth gives Amaris a disapproving look before she turns towards her daughter Rose. 'What has gotten into you?' She says in utter embarrassment, as both Sara and Thomas Andrews desperately try to hide their laughs. Also Edward and Molly are struggling to not burst into laughter. Rose stands up, excuses herself from the table and walks away. 'I do apologize.' Ruth says to everyone at the table. 'Well, seems like she's a pistol, Mr Hockley.' Edward says and grins, knowing that he will annoy Caledon with this. 'I hope you can handle her.' Caledon narrows his eyes a little. 'Well, I may have to start minding what she reads from now on, won't I, Mr Lewis.' He says. Edward suddenly freezes when he hears that comment. His eyes widen a little and he gives Caledon a very angry look, which surprises Sara. Edward isn't the kind of guy to get mad that easily. Something clearly happend and Caledon knows about it for some reason. 'She didn't need to read the article to have made that comment, Mr Hockley.' Amaris says, not noticing how Edward reacted. 'You get older, that sort of thing becomes common sense. And, just so you know, I'm not sure you can handle her.' She gives Caledon a sarcastic and innocent smile. Her mother flashes her a warning look. 'Freud, who is he? Is he a passenger?' Ismay asks, a bit embarrassed by everything that happened. 'No, Mr. Ismay, he isn't. He's a psychoanalyst, who wrote his studies down on paper. The article is very good, in fact. You really should try to read it sometime.' Amaris responds, but her mother pinches her hand under the table. 'Ow!' Amaris says, glaring at her mother. Sara stands up. 'Perhaps, I should go talk to Mrs DeWitt Bukater and bring her back.' She says and wants to walk away, but Caledon stops her. 'No, I'll go.' He says, getting up and walking outside. Sara sighs an sits back down again. Thomas gives his wife a sweet smile and a kiss on her cheek to comfort her. She smiles and they start to hold hands together. 'Don't worry, my dear.' Thomas says. 'She'll be alright.'
