chapter 5

Theme song: Take Her To Sea, Mr Murdoch

The next day the Titanic was steaming West from the coast of Ireland. With nothing ahead, but ocean....

Everest is in her room, together with the other maids. Most of them were gossiping again. Everest never participated in that, but she can't help herself than to eavesdrop the conversations they have. It could be useful to learn more about the passengers. Apparently there is another rich man on the Titanic called Caledon Hockley, together with his fiancee Rose DeWitt Bukater. She never heard of them before, so she's very curious to see them. Just when Everest finished brushing her hair, someone knocks on the door. One of the maids opens the door only a little bit, because some of the maids weren't dressed yet. 'Yes?' She said to the man outside. 'Good morning, miss.' A voice said which Everest immediately recognised. 'Is Everest here, by any change?' 'Yes, mr Lowe. She's here. May I ask you why you want to see her?' Everest rolls her eyes. Of course the most meddlesome maid had to open the door. 'I'm sorry miss, but that's something between me and Everest.' Harold Lowe says. 'So if you could please-' Everest already jumps into his side on the other side of the door. 'Don't worry! I already heard you!' She says and laughs. Harold sighs relieved en chuckles. 'Thank God.' Everest walks outside and closes the door behind her. 'So, did you want to speak with me?' She asks Harold. Harold shakes his head. 'More like showing you something, to be honest. Do you remember when I told you that I wanted to give you a tour around the ship?' 'Of course!' 'Well, I asked the captain about it and he said that it wasn't a problem. I can even show you the bridge.' Everest smiles happily. 'Really! Oh Harold, that's amazing! Thank you so much!' She jumps up and down for a second and hugs him. Harold smiles and hugs her back, hoping that this moment would last forever....

Meanwhile Amaris is walking towards the grand staircase. She's constantly thinking about the kiss she almost had with Jonathan. Hopefully a visit to the first class reading and writing room would help to distract her for a while. As Amaris walks into the room, which is on the port side of a long corridor that's connected to the Grand Staircase, she notices that it's mostly occupied by woman. Not that she's surprised. Most of the men are in the smoking room around this time. Amaris walks over to one of the chairs and sits down. She takes out a book and tries to read it, but stops after a few minutes. It's not going to work. Her thoughts keep going back to Jonathan. She puts the book down and sighs. 'Is everything alright, my dear?' A voice suddenly says. Amaris looks up, a bit surprised, and sees a woman who's seated next to her. She has dark brown hair and friendly blue eyes. 'Oh, yes.' Amaris lies. 'Everything is quite alright, mrs....?' 'Mrs Andrews, dear.' Amaris eyes widen a little. 'Mrs Andrews? The wife of Mr Andrews, the master ship builder?' Sara Andrews smiles and nods. 'Indeed I am. But please, call me Sara. And you are Mrs....?' 'Evans. Amaris Evans.' 'That's a beautiful name. It's nice to meet you, Amaris.' Amaris sees the kind expression on Sara's face and begins to smile. She's not used to such nice people from the first class. 'It is also very nice to meet you, Mrs An... I mean Sara. So what we're you doing here in the reading and writing room?' Sara pulls out a letter and shows it to Amaris. 'I was writing a letter,' Sara answers. 'It's for my mother. I want to ask if my daughter is alright.' Amaris sees the sad look in her eyes and decides not ask any further. She feels sorry for her. 'I'm sure that she's fine, Sara.' 'I indeed hope so. I miss her....' a few tears appear in her eyes, but she quickly removes them. 'But enough about me.' She says, a happy smile appearing on her face. 'Do you want to talk about the reason why you look so troubled?' Amaris thinks for a few seconds, but then shakes her head. 'No... I think this is something I need to figure out on my own. But thank you for asking.' 'That's alright, dear. Sometimes we first need to process things on our own for a while before we talk about it. But if you do want to talk about it, you know where to find me.' Amaris smiles. 'Thank you, Sara....'

After a few hours of walking around the ship, Everest en Harold end their tour on the bridge. 'Thank you so much for this tour, Harold.' Everest says and smiles. 'The ship is absolutely beautiful.' Harold chuckles. 'But you haven't seen the best part yet. Come, I'll show you.' He walks inside the wheelhouse with Everest. From there you have a wonderful view over the first part of the ship and the sea. Everest looks around with a happy smile. 'Good morning, Mr Lowe.' Says second officer Charles Lightoller, who's standing inside the wheelhouse. Then he notices Everest. 'I see you brought someone with you.' Harold nods. 'I indeed did, Mr Lightoller. This is my friend. Her name is-' 'Everest?' A voice suddenly says before Harold can finish his sentence. James Moody walks in and looks at them. Everest smile becomes even bigger. 'James!' Harold quickly looks away to hide his disappointment. He totally forgot that James Moody needs to be in the wheelhouse around this hour. Everest doesn't notice any of Harold's sad face, but Lightoller does. 'Hmm.... I see what's going on here.' He mumbles to himself. James walks over to Everest and smiles. 'I didn't know that you were going to be here, Everest. What a surprise!' Everest chuckles. 'Oh, I'm full of surprises, trust me! I'm here because Harold was giving me a tour around the ship.' 'Really? How nice of him.' Harold slowly looks up and gives them a fake happy smile. 'Yes, I thought it would be nice if she could see one of the most beautiful things ever created.' 'Yes,' James agrees. 'Indeed very beautiful.' But when he says the word beautiful he especially looks at Everest. She notices this and begins to blush. Harold looks to the ground to hide the jealous look in his eyes. Lightoller decides to intervene before things get really awkward. 'Mr Moody, I hope you didn't forget that you need to take my place for the next 5 hours.' 'Of course not sir.' James says. Lightoller nods. 'Good. I think it's wise if your friend Everest only stays here for a few minutes. It seems that she's kind of a distraction to some of you...' He looks at James and Harold and they both start to blush a little. Everest tries to hold back her laughter. 'Don't worry, sir.' She says. 'I will leave in a few minutes. I still need to do my own work here on the ship.' 'That's alright.' He takes his cap off. 'Well, I'll be in my cabine if anyone needs me. Miss Everest, it was a pleasure to meet you.' He smiles, gives a little polite bow and walks away. There is a silence for a few seconds after Lightoller has left, but then Harold speaks up again, trying to get Everest's attention. 'You can see our captain, Edward Smith, standing outside. Next to him is William Murdoch. He's our first officer.' James suddenly leans a bit more towards Everest. 'And a real Scottish men.' He whispers in her ear, which makes Everest laughs quietly. Harold bites on his lip and desperately tries to hold in the urge of pushing James away from Everest. Suddenly Murdoch walks in. 'All ahead full, Mr Moody.' James quickly leans away from Everest and nods. 'Very good, sir.' He walks over to one of the engine-order telegraphs and pulls the lever to one of the sides, where the word "FULL" can be seen. Everest watches everything with interest. 'We use the engine-order telegraphs to let the people in the engine rooms know what kind of speed we want.' Harold explains. 'We're going full ahead now. I think the speed will be around 21 knots.' 'That's really fast!' Everest says. She quickly glances towards the clock on the wall to check the time. 'Oh! It's already 12:00! I need to head back, or I'll get into trouble.' Harold nods. 'Don't worry. I shall escort you back.' 'Thanks Harold.' James turns around and looks at Everest. 'Will I see you soon?' He asks her. Everest smiles. 'Of course! I'm free tonight.' 'Me too!' While they make an appointment for tonight, Harold doesn't really pays attention to what they are saying. He just doesn't want to hear it. They love each other, he can see that. He gets more and more anxious with the minute. Because how can he ever proclaim his love for Everest while she's already with someone else?
