chapter 3
When Everest and James Moody reach te first class entrance, they open the heavy iron doors and attach the gangplank. Everest feels a little bit nervous about the fact that's she's about to do something that women normally aren't allowed to do. James comforts her as best as he can. Finally the first class passengers start to enter the Titanic. The first one they see is a man who's apparently travelling alone. 'Good morning, sir.' Everest says with a kind smile. 'May I see your ticket?' The man looks at her and narrows his eyes, which makes Everest a bit uneasy. 'A women checking tickets?' The man says with a sense of disgust in his voice, while he holds out his ticket. 'How.... strange. I see that you're a maid too. I hope you know that your place is somewhere else and not here. Seems like White Star Line has become a joke.' Everest smile drops and a hurt expression appears on her face. She can't believe that man just said that. 'I ehm....' She doesn't know what to say. James begins to feel angered. The man wants to walk further, but James stops him. 'Excuse me, sir, but don't you know you're speaking to a lady?' He says, his eyes full of anger. 'How dare you talk to her like that? Don't take that attitude!' The man is a little surprised when James stands up for Everest. He mumbles something and then walks off. Everest is even more surprised than the man. She looks at James. 'I....thank you, James.' She says and blushes a little. James smiles. 'You don't have to thank me. That man was just extremely rude. I can't stand it when other people are mean to you.' Everest smiles when he says that. Soon the other first class passengers arrive. Luckily they're not as rude as the first man who came aboard. She recognises some of the first class passengers. One of them is Mr Guggenheim, who Everest already saw on another ship of the White Star Line one year ago. Also John Jacob Astor IV and his wife Madelaine board the ship. Everest believes that she heard one of the other maids say that Madelaine is pregnant. James checks their tickets and wishes them a bon voyage. Everest looks outside and sees a couple walking up the gangplanks. 'James.... isn't that Mr Andrews, the master shipbuilder, with his wife?' James takes a quick look outside and nods. 'Yes, I believe so. You've heard of him?' 'Of course! He designed the Titanic. The other maids can't stop talking about it. But I didn't know that he's also going to be on the Titanic's maiden voyage with his wife.' Thomas Andrews and Sara board the Titanic together. They show their tickets to Everest and give her a kind smile. They don't seem to be bothered at all with a women checking the tickets. Everest laughs silently as Sara even gives her a thumbs up when they walked past. After some time, Everest and James have done their duty in the first class and go all the way down to the third class to assist with the tickets there.
Meanwhile August, Jack and Fabrizio are running through the crowd toward the Titanic as fast as they can. They only have a few minutes left before the ship leaves. Jack shouts a few things about America, while August and Fabrizio try to catch up with him. They run over te gangplank of the third class. James and Everest want to close the door, but stop when they see them. 'Wait wait!' Jack yells. He quickly gives James the tickets. James raises an eyebrow. 'Have you been through the inspection, sir?' 'Of course,' Jack lies. 'Anyway, we don't have any lice. We're Americans, all three of us.' James still seems a little bit unsure, but Everest gives him a convincing smile. 'Alright,' James says. 'Come on board.' Jack, August and Fabrizio quickly jump over the small gab, onto the safe surface of the ship. 'Merci! Oh, I mean.... thank you!' August says and then runs off with his two friends. James scratches his head and chuckles. 'Something tells me that two of those guys aren't Americans.' Everest laughs. 'You're right.'
A few seconds later the Titanic finally starts to set sail. August, Jack and Fabrizio run to the third class deck. They stand by the railing and Jack starts to wave to everyone below. 'Goodbye!' He yells. 'Do you know somebody?' August asks confused. 'Of course not, but that's not the point!' Jack answers and starts waving again. 'Goodbye, I'll miss you!' August laughs and also starts waving, together with Fabrizio. 'Goodbye!' He yells. 'I will never forget you!'
But they are not the only one who are waving to the people on the docks. Also Julia and her daughter Sophia are waving to the people for fun. Sara Andrews and her husband, on the other hand, wave at Sara's mother and their daughter Elisabeth. The engines of the Titanic start and the propeller blades begin to work. The ship slowly begins to move and then finally leaves Southampton.
