Spelling
Forget about grammar. If you cannot even spell, should you really be running/judging a writing contest?
The following spelling mistakes are made with mind-boggling frequency:
(1) The #1 offender: Entries vs. Entires vs. Enteries vs. Entrees vs. Entrie
*Entries: 'people or things competing in a race or competition.'
*Entires: (archaic) 'a group of uncastrated male horses.'
*Enteries: (obsolete misspelling of entries)...
*Entrees: 'the main courses of a meal.'
*Entrie: not a word in English...
(2) Submit vs. Summit
*Submit = 'present (a proposal, application, or other document) to a person or body for consideration or judgment.'
*Summit = 'the highest point of a hill or mountain.'
(3) Allowed vs. Aloud
*Allowed = 'permitted.'
*Aloud = 'audibly, not whispered.'
(4) Accepted vs. Excepted
*Accepted = 'receive as adequate, valid, or suitable, consent to receive (a thing offered).'
*Excepted = 'not included in the category or group specified.'
(5) Category vs. Catergory vs. Catagory
*Category = 'a class or division of people or things regarded as having particular shared characteristics.'
*Catergory = not even a word in the English language...
*Catagory = not a word in English either...
(6) Banned vs. Band
*Banned = 'prohibited, outlawed, refused, forbidden, off-limits, not allowed.'
*Band = 'a group of instrumentalists playing music of a specialized type: rock band; calypso band; mariachi band.'
